  1. I understand why we have no friends. The best way to have a friend is to be one. Many on this board could care less about anyone else.

We have a long history with Texas State and could use a friendly rival within the state. An instate rival would reduce travel costs and increase attendance. I know that if the situation were reversed I'd sure appreciate the help for North Texas.

UTSA is another matter. They have no history in football and little history in the other sports. North Texas had been playing football for nearly forty years before we were able to move up to what is now the equivalent of the FBS (then called major college). I have no animosity towards them but they have not paid their dues so to speak. Maybe, if we are fortunate enough to upgrade to a higher conference then they will be allowed to take our place.

  2. I'm scheduled to go select my season tickets next week. When the girl called me I meant to ask if they let us go out an pick our seats at the stadium while we are there and actually see where we would be sitting. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. I was driving and trying to pull over to talk when she called, so my thoughts weren't on Mean Green Football (althought they should be at all times)at the time. What does the trip to the office consist of?

You will pick from a chart that has previously chosen seats blocked out. Since we will not have access to the stadium until early July, you will not be able to see from your actual seats.

If it's as the other seat selections you will be checked off the list at the front of the AC, make a name tag, go to the anteroom where the press conferences are staged to view the available seats from the chart. When your actual time comes up you will be assigned one of the development staff who will take you to another room to officially record your selection. After your seats are known you can view from the area that you chose through virtual reality. It's a simple and easy process.

You should be able to arrange a tour of the stadium in July and possibly change your location. If you can, I'd guess that there is a rather small window of opportunity because I can see that a wholesale changing of seats would create chaos.

  3. The Lone Star Conference is a Division II conference so that wouldn't help their cause. They could try to get in the Southland, a FCS conference (Division I) but would be behind two other WAC wannabes in Lamar and Sam Houston State. In addition, their small enrollment would make it doubly tough to average the 15,000 required for admittance.

Furthermore, it costs more than $10M per year to operate a FBS football team. I hope that Houston Baptist has the bucks behind them.

  4. Injuries, changes in career goals, academics, girlfriends, family problems, and a myriad of other reasons can change the desire and focus of an athlete. Sometimes there are more talented athletes signed that would push them further down the chart. There are no doubt occasions where they are asked to give up their scholarship to make way for the signing of new talent.

Whatever the reason there are always a few players that do not return in the fall. It happens in programs big and small. I would like for everyone to be able to finish their eligibility but it isn't always possible. All that we can do is thank them for their time and effort in trying to make this program a success. Godspeed to Troy, John and Austin. I wish you well for the remainder of your life.

  5. I just asked Rick (emailed) to see if we can get any approval to have a watching party for the UNT-FIU game at the stadium and using the screen. Let's see what he says. Would anyone be interested in that?

Wouldn't that be a little like opening your presents a week before Christmas?

  6. Linebackers are not a good example. The only "linebacker" who is that light (202) is Blake Dunham and I think of him as a deep snapper and special teamer unless/until he gains enough weight to play that position. The next closest is Will Wright at 204 and he's a converted safety who I predict will be 10-15 pounds heavier by fall.

To me, the average for all conference linebackers means little. The average for the best conference linebackers might be more telling. Zach Orr, one of our best, if not the best, linebacker weighs in at 240 so, as one poster said, there must be multiple sub-200 pounders somewhere.

The premise is simply not factual. In addition, speed is another measurable factor that should also be included.

  7. By Isaac Wright / Senior Staff Writer - Amidst a crowd of fans in Mavericks colors outside the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas Sunday, members of the Westboro Baptist Church picketed to voice its message. About six members of the Kansas-based church, including two children, brandished signs and bombarded bystanders with anti-homosexual rhetoric. The WBC’s website said they chose the Mavericks game as the backdrop for their protest because Americans worship sports stars  as gods. The WBC was founded in 1955 and is best known for its protests of military funerals, protests the Supreme Court ruled to be constitutional [...]

  8. champions don't have to go to the NO Bowl...proximity/ticket sales/fan travel/etc, play into where the teams will go

True, but I don't see us having more than two invites and we only have two guaranteed bowls. So assuming that the champion chooses the bowl in Mobile where does the runnerup go?

  9. Heck, how about every living member of the North Texas Hall of Fame from any sport, with family members to represent the deceased. This stadium transcends just football.

If we do all of that the introductions will run close to midnight. When do they play?

  10. The video board dimensions that Brett was given have to be wrong. 49 X 25 puts us at 1225 SF, which isn't the third biggest in Texas. We need to get above 1500 SF to pass SMU for third place. He did say it was just an off the top of the head number, but most everyone in the athletic department has been saying for months now it would be the third biggest.

Even if it is only 1225 SF though, that is still really, really big.

Brett is way off on his dimensions. If you will count the 4x8 panels on the backside you will find that there are 11x8'=88' across the bottom and 8x4'=32' in height. That would calculate to 2814 SF; more than twice Vito's figures. Maybe the entire area will not be videoboard but I can't imagine that less than half would be viewing area.

  11. Admittedly, we don't draw anywhere near what we should draw but Johnny truly likes it here, it pays decently, and is only about 300 miles from his roots. I'm pretty sure that he would take any SEC job but others would have to be pretty high profile to really get his attention.

As far as our attendance we just need a few more Texas Techs and Oklahoma States to go along with getting to play Western Kentucky at home every once in a while. Bill Blakeley's teams used to draw 5-7,000 with half the student body and I see no reason why those kind of crowds can't return.

We haven't been playing a strong schedule so the five straight 20-win seasons seem a little tainted. If just one of his teams had gone two deep in the dance then he would really be in demand. If he can cultivate the incoming talent into a power similar to Butler, Gonzaga, Utah State or the old WKU then he'll get the offers from the bigs.

  12. Any truth to the rumor that they may be looking at Johnny Jones to replace him?

If JJ is going to replace a football coach shouldn't it be posted on the basketball thread? Otherwise, unless one of our football staff is to replace him, how about moving this to the Eagle's Nest?

  13. In addition to room for the players and equipment there must be some space for sight lines. I remember sitting on row 2, 50 yard line at LSU and could only see the backs of the players and what I could glean from the video board. The reason?...I was too close to field and too low.

I'm pretty sure that HKS knows what they are doing.

  14. The size of the large video board is 32'x 88'. How much of that is used for border is anyone's guess. Since there will be no fixed advertising on that boards most should be included in the viewing area. The maximum viewing area would be 2,816 SF.

  15. Ding! Ding! Ding! I think that you've discovered why we will win six games this year. That would be the coaches.

I had the good fortune to get to visit for a few minutes with Clint Bowen when I went to make my seat selection. His quiet optimism and enthusiasm for what we might be capable of this coming year really pumped me up. Last year at WKU, he took a team that had been near the bottom in every defensive category nationally and ended up the best in the Belt based on conference play.

Coach Bowen knows that we lost some talent from last year, notably one of our best linebackers ever and a couple of good defensive tackles. He may have a linebacker who will be near the equivalent of Robertson, and decent depth. He will keep fresh bodies in there so that fatigue won't be a factor as it often was last year. Since defense wins championships we might very well be in New Orleans.

We all know how Mike Canales was able to rally the offense in the last five games and I expect near the same this coming year. He seems to be the type of coach that always has produced.

The other coordinator, Kent Riddle, was the architect behind Boise State's special teams. They became among the best in the country. He has the conference's best kicker and second best punter and return specialist to work with. He should also have a little more speed on his coverage teams. I look for special teams to be the best in the Sun Belt.

Furthermore, our coaches have appeared in 80 bowl games so they know what it takes to win. They may not be able to make bold predictions at this stage but I can. I don't have any pressure.

  16. Don't know how accurate this still is but per Juco Junction there are still several unsigned frontcourt players. We know that #1 is a super-talented head case but if Okie State hasn't made a deal with him he could be an excellent choice.

There are a couple of other Texas players...the one from Lon Morris is the next highest rated as I recaLL.

  17. A great find....as far as I can tell Rivals and Scout.com don't show him with an offer....but the Columbus NFTCCamp lists him on their all camp team and shows him with an NT offer.

Rivals doesn't show that he has any interest in those colleges that have offered. Worse than that, the only non-AQ school of interest is Northern Illinois.
