  1. No real biggie here, but am curious why a subject concerning football gets moved from the football section to this section but subjects like student health centers, WFAA Channel 8 events and other non football related subject titles do not? Have I missed a ground rule somewhere?
  2. I have not seen it myself, but to even hear some of my female collegues here at the job talk about it, I can't wait to see it. Jeez! Girls who like a football flick? "What in the wide world of sports is-a goin' on here?!?!" (Slim Pickens from Blazing Saddles")... Any of you see it yet? What are you hearing from your own contemporaries about "Friday Night Lights?"
  3. OK, this is most definitely a non UNT Sports item here... QUESTION: When vertically hanging a Texas flag, is it the solid red or the solid white on the left side as you face the flag (as it hangs down, vertically)? Anyone know?
  4. If the young man received scholarship offers from 60 other schools AND TCU he must have something going on because the Frogs don't exactly throw scholarships away for long shots. Just my .o2....
  5. And greenjoe sat right behind me with that wrench in his pocket. You don't think I was worried just a little bit? LOL! Next game greenjoe, I'll bring the screwdrivers!
  6. I realize I speak mostly on this topic as one who has been sitting at games at Fouts Field much longer than others who have recently only begun to do so; obviously (once again) the generation gap at work here. Spoke to one after the game last night who has been going to game there since the stadium opened which was about the time I was born. Again, a new stadium in Denton is needed just as you would tear down an old academic bldg. that is near the "to be condemned' stage. We have torn down buildings at UNT in the past not because they were at capacity usage, but because they were about to fall down, hurt somebody and then the lawyers enter that kind of scenerio. A new stadium will be an expensive and seemedly all but a necessary evil with some on our campus who are shying away day by day from even talking about one, but still a football program like UNT's will die on the vine even in the Sun Belt Conference without one in due time. Reminder: Still only 3 winniing seasons the last 25 years in Mean Green Country. Anyone think facilities (or lack thereof) may have had something to do with even that? An Athletic Center is not a luxury, it is what most everyone else in D1-A who UNT should really want to compete against already have along with their in-place D1-A stadiums. Yet as of Sunday morning, September 12, 2004, does anyone else feel a sudden swing of the pendulum in the SBC even though FAU is not elgible to win the league and go bowling this Fall? If they were, would not they and Troy now be the contenders for post season play in the Big Easy? No, I have not given up on our team because haven't they comeback in worse scenarios than we are seeing now as they now try to get some new players some strategic experience B4 SBC play begins? ALL THIS IS STILL A MOOT POINT because it is still a money thing at UNT and we all know that, but others have found a way. Of course, we could talk new stadium well into the next decade after the one we're in and according to some on this board who seem know--we will do just that. Although we would use a new stadium at Eagle Point only 5 or 6 times a year, it is still the shining jewel for most D1-A campuses when they conclude a high school recruit's visit on their campus. Almost like buying a house; that is, a real estate agent could show a prospective buyer a nice 4 car garage, backyard swimming pool and other ancillery bells and whistles that can impress that prospect, but what will eventually seal the deal for that prospective home buyer will be the actual house. At NCAA D1-A universities in the state of Texas, your stadium IS the house. Right now, though, guess we better work on other things than just a new stadium?
  7. I just don't get that philosophy and never have from others who have posted it. I think you build new facilities within the Texas college football scene to keep up with the Joneses you are recruiting against each Winter and what a concept with this>>>>>>> for fan comfort and ease in viewing a football game. Even tonight as my group sat in Lower Section E, I marveled with just how far our fans are from the action on the gridiron at Fouts Field--a very impersonal environment for fans to try to connect with their team and probably even vice-versa. So its not just RV and UNT athletics who want the stadium. Many of us who have been sitting in our track and field stadium for a few decades have wanted a new football venue since some of you were born. But still.......................we need a Big Donor who doesn't let 1 or 2 losses afffect his resolve in helping a school like UNT that is expected to grow to 43,000 in enrollment improve its facilities.
  8. In memory of our fellow Americans who lost their lives on a 9-11 three years ago today.
  9. Just heard that amazing and horrifying info on Hurricane Frances on the CBS 11 Report this early Friday AM. In the same CBS 11 News report, Denton's regional FEMA crew is heading out in full force to Florida as well as the Texas Baptist Men (of which Old Timer has been part of in the past) is also on the way to the Sunshine State.
  10. I think this baseball stadium to be built at UNT's Eagle Point is an absolute coup for our alma mater and that is whether it seats 500, 1,000 or more. Can you close your eyes and just visualize what Eagle Point is going to look like in the next 5 years?
  11. In today's Dallas Morning News (Thursday) on page 71 a rather interesting photo of a a few happy UNT (Denton) graduates. If you can still get a copy of today's edition of the DMN, do so as this very large magazine insert is very informative and has a whole bunch of info on Denton County. A very impressive insert I'd say as well**wonder how much that sucker cost$?!?!?
  12. Damn! Never a dull moment with the Cowboys. Anybody else notice that since Parcell's took over the Cowboys as head coach, that because of his "most of the time" silence with the press, that we don't have Cowboy talk on sports radio stations 12 months a year now? No complaint on that, either, from this sports fan.
  13. Saw "The Last Tango in Paris" on The Dish recently. Wonder whatever happened to the young girl with all the hair on her, uh, head? She seemed to have disappeared after that movie. ON ANOTHER WATER FRONT: Has anyone seen the latest "Manchurian Candidate" movie with Denzel playing Frank's part? How do the 2 compare?
  14. The, uh, "prime insterstate real estate" the TLC is getting from UNT I assumed was a pretty fair trade-off as to where UNT would not have to put a dime into the baseball stadium. Arent' they used to funding these stadiums with their own financial resources? Guess I shouldn't assume, eh?
  15. Last time I went, I saw numerous Big 12 coaches, ex SWC coaches not in the Big 12, etc, etc, etc... Any of you who were able to attend the Great American Shootout see anyone you recognized from other locales?
  16. e-bone, since this is not an official UNT event I don't think UNT students would get in free with an ID; who knows, maybe the outside group running this even might give a discount but don't count on that, either.
  17. How funny (or ironic), Fanof49, I rented that same movie and almost turned the damn thing off about the same time you did! The producers of this farce might as well have had the Confederates soldiers break into a selection from "A Chorus Line! LOL! I guess they rode the wave of popularity of the other fairly recent Civil War movies and got at least 2 of us suckered in, eh?
  18. All the activity of the Pontiac Denton Great American Shootout begins this Friday (July 11) at 2:00 PM according to Sam on Scottie's board. Semi-finals of the PDGAS begin this Sunday (July 13) 9:00 AM & at the UNT Super Pit.
  19. The only "fantasies" I've ever involved myself are the kind that if I posted the details I would I'm sure have yet another thread removed by Cerebus (again); it would only be the 2'nd in 2 weeks matter of fact. OH HELL! CAN I EVEN SAY THAT, HARRY?!?!? I've never played fantasy football or baseball ever. What is the hook in all this that keeps so many interested? I have seen magazines in the sports section at Wal Mart on all this "fantasy business" so I know it is very popular.
  20. Of course the high school basketball players from all over the USA who will be playing in the Super Pit and Denton area gyms won't be too shabby, either. Any schedule on the happenings of this annual event in Denton and the UNT campus whicn I believe begin this Friday or Saturday? Saw this subject on Scottie's board, can it be linked to this one so all of the Mean Green Nation can read it? Thanks in advance....
  21. Was at the Weatherford, Texas, Wal Mart this Saturday AM and bought the DVD "Cold Mountain" for $15.95. It is a 2 disk set and the features on Disk 2 are outstanding with a complete concert of the music of the movie as part of that disk. Interesting that it was filmed in Romania as I could have sworn it looked like parts of the Deep South I've been. I saw "Cold Mountain" last Christmas Day when it opened in theatres nation-wide. Loved the music compiled by Fort Worth's T-Bone Burnett. He put together some fine singers and ensembles to perfrom the mountain music, ie, more blue grass and even sacred harp singing such as that that came from the Deep South's fundamental churches during the Civil War years (before and after). Heard my mother talk about sacred harp music of Alabama (where she was born and where I still have many, many relatives) all my life and the flick "Cold Mountain" allowed me to hear it for the first time.
