  1. I think Wright Waters has to have all his schools shoot for the moon and have hopes of at least hitting the barn with this attendance thing.

NT's attendance woes is a complete dilemma to many of us especially since we have so much new population in Denton County. I still say we have to be just like the evangelical churches, folks, and just go out and get them (but been saying that for a few decades now). wink.gif

There is something SUMG and I have called the "Denton malaise" for years and it is an attitude that just completely guts out the enthusiasm of so many of our past NT Athletic Department employees. Having many NT enthusiast (yet non-investors) in this Mean Green football program has had as much to do with that "malaise" as anything, fellow alums/fans.

I just hope this is not the case now in MG Country, but to see any plan to dramatically increase FB attendance at Fouts Field would be a most welcome sight now.

  2. If FAU is all of the sudden the league "darling".....it would seem to me that if you're gonna televise a bunch of FAU games....our game, against them in Miami.......would be one of them.

Howard Smellin'burger showed what he was about as OU's short-term coach (liquor breath and all); hellsbells, he looks like an alchie' or a wine-o in the Mogen David choir on Fort Worth's downtown Jones Street.

Is Wright Waters being swayed by ol' Howie here?!?!? rolleyes.gif Have we lost our luster with Wright ol' boy?

This really makes for good bulletin board material in my mind's eye. It's NT vs the SBC now! cool.gif

  3. Why does Rashod Smith, RB from FIU make the list? Ok, so he had more than 1,000 yards in one season. But did he win the NCAA rushing title? hm? ph34r.gif

Such a list with anyone from FIU on it is about as legitimate as a $3 bill. Like how long they been in the freakin' Sun Belt now?

If I were Coach DD, I'd start putting together a "It's us vs the SBC" theme on the bulletin board this Fall and you can start with a young NT team having to play its first SBC game "on the road " as the 2'nd game of the season. Sure, I know MT has to play it, too, but they do get it at home. Anyone remember when we had to got to the 'Boro 2 years in a row? Now also add SUMG's find that Coach Howie "Smellin'burger's FAU has 7 TV games to our, uh, 4? What'st next? mad.gif These kind of things should be pointed out to our team (not that they really need it); because it may make some of them want to do a little "extra" slobber-knockin'" when they play any SBC team.

On the other side of the coin, folks, the SBC is progressing with one school (TU) having a (basically) new stadium and another (FAU) with plans for a domed stadium or now even a shared stadium with an NFL team what I read on some other board. How do we keep up with the change$? $$$$$$$$$$$$

  4. Last year was an exception to the Dallas Area top 100, we did recruit several from the greater FW area. We recruited several outstanding DB prospects from OK and other areas that we had no interest in the one DB in the Dallas area listing who had indicated an interest in NT> We also recruited more from central TX and the Houston area.

We now have one prospect on the statewide top 100,

We have lost only two prospects so far, one to TCU and the other to N Carolina, the player who chose NC was among the top 5 in the state at his position.

Interesting that the prospect list includes 3 players who TX FB lists in their top level of positions...ie top 10, top 15 or top 20 in the state

But as one of our fellow posters from east Texas pointed out to me just last evening via the miracle of the telephone, NT really started making hay with the 8 Texas state top 100 kids Coach Dickey and staff signed about 5 or 6 years ago. This was the group that got NT into a bowling frame of mind while even winning one of those bowl games in 2002 against the CUSA football champion at the NEW ORLEANS BOWL.

The amazing thing to me to this day about that recruiting class of Dickey's 5 or 6 years ago, was that at the time there were absolutely no drawings on the board for an Athletic Center, least of all plans for a 200 acre olympic-style village with a new 35-40,000 seat football stadium as the icing on the cake for those 200 acres, ie, very highly visible property off the 2 interstates we now see a few facilities already completed and others now under construction.

Coach Dickey has lost some of the assistant coaches who helped him recruit those 8 state top 100 recruits to other programs who could pay more salaries than NT. He will lose others in the near future if we as alums and fans don't start investing en mass with this athletic program. Look for a new NT president to not be as "pro athletics" as Pohl was because NT's history is to hire just the opposite of who just left so some group is going to have to take up the slack in the area of more funds for athletics, so folks, get the check books out.

Still amazing to me that Noval Pohl who resided over our schools largest growth in enrollment, adding record numbers of new facilities while also adding some prestigious majors to our academic offering was not popular to many of the professors on campus. Anyone else notice what kind of president at NT gets bad reviews from our NT employees and wonder why that is? Sorry, I am getting off subject here.smile.gif

This is gravitating to the point of ad nausem from me and I know it is, but if we as NT Exes and Mean Green fans had given NT Athletics a better donor ba$e by way of the "you know what" athletic department fundraising arm, some of these coaches get higher salaries and stick around MG Country while at the same time probably helping Coach Dickey continue to sign more Texas state top 100 blue chippers (just as they did 5-6 years ago). We will lose other of DD's present assistant coaches unless we stay competitive (or exceed) what other schools are paying out salary-wise. Most of the schools who would hire our best away fro us use their athletic department's fund-raising arm to help suppliment salaries.

It's still all about like meanjoe ends every one of his posts and you all know what that is by now. biggrin.gif

  5. When we reach our NT Athletic Department's goal of 3,000 Mean Green Club members, I'd say that would put us well over $1,000,000 plus in annual scholarship monies which immediately frees up other funds for all the other kinds of projects and ideas many of us have posted on www.GoMeanGreen.com the last few years.

If you checked "OTHER" please explain what your "other" is. Thanks!

    GMG!

  6. I still do not understand how NT can generate so little interest by DMN area top 100.

    Just a theory:

But it seems many of the non BCS schools who have Rivals.com sponsored boards for each of their schools seem to get on more of these kid's schools wishlist more frequently than NT (who doesn't have a Rivals.com sponsored board). The Dallas Morning News Local, State and National Top 100 are all three Rivals.com lists ranked by Bobby Burton's Rivals staff with some (so-called) assistance from the local paper. Still probably mostly done by Rivals, though.. rolleyes.gif As I said....just a theory. Anyone else concur?

Also, NT seems to recruit many out-of-state players as the Mean Green Recruiting Update premium board list shows and none of those names would (obviously) not show up on the the Dallas Morning News Local or State Top 100 lists, either.

  7. Great idea!  We can never have too much community outreach.  Regardless of the success we must continue to brainstorm ideas on how to make ourselves as a University appealing to joe casual fan.

With the huge influx of people from other communities (i.e. Hispanic), maybe we could one day have a Mean Green Fiesta or something that would bring people to Fouts during the summer for a family friendly party.  Then maybe we can get them back in the fall.  Now thinking way out of the box - one day maybe even having a re-occurring fall Fiesta on gamedays and marketing this bad boy via mail in Spanish.

I know I am stereotyping here, but I know my peeps and the Latin community loves a Fiesta!

    GMG

I don't think your stereo-typing at all but just being topical about current trends in Texas' population growth.

UNT's campus radio stadion KNTU-FM 88.1 does all its weekend programming in Spanish for our Spanish speaking Communication Majors. What better time to advertise to the Hispanic community than on our alma mater's campus radio station on the weekends?

I still wish NT Athletics had a Spanish broadcast (and monies to produce such) of every Mean Green football game on its future agenda. Yes, I know English is our official language, but last time I looked at a map, Texas and Mexico were neighbors and we still have a whole bunch of Spanish-speaking resident aliens with their Mean Green cards rolleyes.gif (sorry, couldn't resist) in their billfolds.

It is a demographic that we cannot ignore too much longer.

AND....great idea! I am glad to see the Dickey's and some of the athletic department staff are hosting such an event. IMO, this is one of the ways we begin to create the much needed "new faces/new fans" at venerable Fouts Field. smile.gif

  8. We just bought our season tickets last week... been saving up for months for this one. We even convinced one of our buddies (still a UNT student) to get season tickets with us..... 3 new season ticket holders. smile.gif

I can't wait for football season!

And I can remember when one our our most comedic and humorous posters ever on GMG.com was an NT student and joined the Mean Green Club while a student.

The UNT student friend of yalls, untgirl04, who bought a 2005 NT football season ticket just to be able to sit with you guys deserves some special kind of commendation.

    Harry/Cerebus, any ideas? rolleyes.gif

  9. And, in case you ask, I still find a way to give to the Mean Green Club and buy season tickets.  Not as much as I'd like but maybe that'll change.

Both of you are retired and giving to the Mean Green Club & purchasing 2005 NT football season tickets? blink.gif

Many of us on this board would admit to being duly impressed with that feat by both you and your wife, GrayEagle. Way to go!

    GMG!

  10. Ditto, Emmitt and SUMG:

Ok, lets say a person puts $50 down toward the $250 membership which opens up many new opportunities among those would be:

    (1) Lower or Upper Section E ticket prime seating opportunities

    (2) Some pretty nice gift percs as a $250 level donor one or more of those gifts which may even make nice Christmas gifts to a friend or relative. (OK, you've just saved some on your 2005 Christmas shopping).

    (3) Get an up-close 2005 reserved parking auto mirror hanger which means you don't have to shell out cash each time you park somewhere near Fouts Field.

    (4) You also make NT $250 closer to all the things we all want to happen in Mean Green Country.

    ............................................................................................

    WILL THESE FIGURES WORK?

With $50 down toward the $250, that would make your monthly payments $20 for 10 months or $5 per week. I put $24 in my auto gas tank just last night. If 2 go out to eat pizza, a party of 2 (or more) will spend more than $20. If one goes to Starbucks 3 X's a week, for the money you'd spend doing that over the month, you could probably easily join the $500 level MG Club! laugh.gif

No matter a person's situation, there may be some semblance of budget sacrifice involved, but I think most of us could eliminate a monthly luxury or 2 and easily find $20 a month (with an initial $50 down unless you want less down and a bit higher monthly payment).

NT has made all this all too easy for us compared to other schools our size. Our ticket prices are still very low compared to other schools in NCAA D1-A.

<>*<> Get your spot in Section E now so you can have first dibbs on similar tickets when we move across I35-E to our future new stadium. They will probably grandfather your Section E seats for maybe a year or 2 once we're in that new stadium--just a guess on that, though.

1-800-UNT-2366......................is the number anyone can call on weekdays this next week to make your 2005/2006 committment to the Mean Green Club and take care of your 2005 MG FB season ticket needs with the same phone call--one stop shopping (so to speak) AND let them explain all this to you as you will find a friendly voice on the other side of the aforementioned 1-800 number. smile.gif

  11. I got 3 and you cant even get one, I see a problem here wink.gif

So far, I have none. wink.gif {SUMG, I think you have MINE}! LOL!

I did print the entire 2005 NT Mean Green Fan Guide from the official site, though, as anyone else with a printer can do. Then I took the publication to a Starbucks, read it and "accidently"}:>) left it there where I guess someone else picked it up and browsed through it. Hopefully that someone was a future JUCO All Amercian, maybe one of our 2006 Texas Friday Night Heros "OR" a new NT Mean Green Club member and a 2005 NT football season tickets buyer).

Someone have that Fan Guide link for our fans who have not received it yet? I am sure they would be grateful to get it so they can print their own, too.

To all of you with SIRIUS Satellite Radio, enjoy the SBC Football Media Day beginning tomorrow (Monday & Tuesday).

Darrell Dickey, Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas are interviewed from 10:30 AM--11:00 AM

  13. Thanks for posting those rosters, Aaron.

Unless I missed somebody....I didn't see any of our football recruits in the game. Am I right on that?

But on Monday....we have two hoopsters (Howerton, Stewart) playing in the b-ball game.

I believe the kid from Aledo HS (Parker County) is going to be a preferred "walk on" at TCU. Seems that is what one of my friend's sons who plays QB at AHS told me.

  14. Think it wouldn't help RV and the other fundraisers, if when they're meeting that fat cat...if they had ammo in hand, about how many of our "faithful" back the program with their own money. Think having a 1,000 or so members in the MGC, wouldn't help the cause?

You can be in the lowest level of the MGC for about 34 cents a day. Yeah, that's right.

SUMG, GrayEagle has been saying if we had that kind of base and about a 10,000 MG fan's who bought season tickets that we could probably start building our stadium without a Fat Cat, ie, Big Donor. Something about using bonds to do that, right Jack?

1-800-UNT-2366 is a weekday call that can change your life forever as a Mean Green fan or alum. They can tell you how you can invest that $0.34 per day (and get some fairly nice percs for doing so). Some of those percs even worthy as Christmas gifts this December.

????? Driving into FW this AM, I was thinking if NT Athletics had a "check by phone" method of payment if that would help many out there. Would it help you, specifically, GMG.com readers because so many have cut up their MasterCards, Visas or Discovery cards? Wonder how easy that would be to set up over at the NT Athletic Department if they were interested in doing this?

  15. We need to convince BILL GATES not Robert Gates to help us.  He has 50,000 million (50 Billion).  We would even name the stadium for him.

After all.... we the first accredited computer science school in America (true).

Great idea! And I didn't know we were the first computer science program to be accredited.

And we could call it, uh.............GATES-WAY CENTER STADIUM @__________FIELD?sad.gif (drum roll-----AYE!)

MORE GREEN {$$$$$$$$$$} FOR THE MEAN GREEN? We should be able to get a few million for the naming rights of the "Field" part of our new stadium, too, as retaining the Fouts Field name would be highly unusual since we are talking about a new facility at a new location.

ALSO..........how about naming each one of the I-35's the new stadium will be sitting between with names of 2 Big Donors, too? Or name the 2 interstates after 2 Texas politicians who might play a most significant part in helping us out with the finishing of our 200 acre Mean Green Athletic Village? Out here at the Parker/Tarrant County lines, where I-20 divides from I-30 that segment of the interstate (heading toward the Hulen Mall area) is going to be re-named "President Ronald Reagan Highway" according to a recent Fort Worth Star Telegram article.

  16. Jim...are you sure about that?

When I looked at that schedule....it looked like Jim Donnan was going to be interviewed by the hosts of this Sirius show, and that our trio would follow on that show. It doesn't say that Jim Donnan will do the interviewing, but that he will be interviewed.

At least that's what I read.................

    My bad....

I think you are right, SUMG. Maybe they should let him interview our guys since he is most familiar with Darrell Dickey and the Mean Green football program since Donnan has been on many of our ESPN broadcasts the last few years.

I believe the ESPN broadcaster said in a TV broadcast of one of our games that he had coached with DD's dad (Coach Jim Dickey) in the past.

  17. This from the new SBC website which one of you may want to link for the entire SBC Media Day schedule. SBC Media Day will also be broadcast "live" on SIRIUS Satelite Radio beginning this next Monday, July 25'th at 9:00 AM.

ESPN's Jim Donnan interview with our Coach Dickey, Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas is scheduled for Monday, 10:30 AM--11:00 AM on the SIRIUS Satelite Radio.

SBC Media Day will actually be "Days" as it is being held on both Monday and Tuesday of this upcoming week.

Also, watch your local newspapers for coverage on those 2 days as well. The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and (certainly) the Denton Record-Chronicle have given SBC Media Days pretty good coverage in past years. Hey all you Houstonians who are North Texas Exes or Mean Green fans, does it get coverage with the Houston Chronicle, too?

    GMG!

  18. First of all, we've had players in the game before. ("Booger" was the most recent one). And that was when it was on the West Coast.

So why now that the game is gonna be in Texas....are you so sure we wouldn't have a chance in Hell of having a player in that game?

SUMG, isn't that the all star game that Gil Brandt helps pick the players?

  19. And true freshman Bryan Glass (6'0"/280) from Paris High School comes to Mean Green Country wiith the full blessings of Coach Gene Stallings who (as I recall) made the comment that he would have recuited this kid if he were still head football coach at Alabama. Guess the kid must have some real pedigree, eh? rolleyes.gif

  20. This is an extreme example but one potential donor (an ex-student who did not graduate) has an ANNUAL income in the neighborhood of $70 million (great neighborhood).  The amount that taxes would not get would pay more than half of that $30 million donation unless a reasonable portion is from tax-free bonds.

There are at least several others with ties to the university that have deep enough pockets to have a stadium named for them with their donation.  The money is not lying around in their checking account though, and could require months or even years to free.

Just keep the faith.  I don't believe that we would even have an announced Capital Campaign Fund if we didn't have a reasonable certainty of obtaining the goal.  All we are trying to determine now is when.

GrayEagle, I have been duly impressed with the names I've heard floating around who have NT connections who could be our ultimate all time NT folk hero in all this.

Some of that group might be attracted to the fact that they won't need to shell out near as much as Boone Pickens has for an Oklahoma State yet still get their name on our new stadium. Last I heard, seems Boone ol' boy was in the $100 million range at least. PLUS THIS FACT: We will have one of the best located college football stadiums in America hands down.

NORTH TEXAS can probaby build all we need for $50 million with a Big Donor plunking down $30 million to get naming rights and to get this thing jump-started. I have to believe NT fundraisers can find 20 others at $1 million each with each of those 20 getting lifetime ultra-luxury suites at our new stadium for they, their companies and their families.

And like Coach Darrell Dickey said (and I very liberally paraphrase): "I've never seen this university fail in anything it has set its mind of doing." Not exactly his words, but close enough. And this university wants a new football stadium at our Eagle Point Campus. TxDOT sorta' wants us to have a new one, too. rolleyes.gif

    FOUTS IMPLOSION CEREMONY TBA!
