Hope Coach Jones is having some success with his recruiting.
I look to make some Saturday games this year. Anyone know how many home games we have on Saturdays for this next season and against who?
GMG!

And Patrick Cobbs proved to be a good example of how a medical redshirt off year can be a positive experience. It was encouraging to see Cobbs on the sidelines being a student coach last Fall.
-
I hate when this example is used
Bryant nearly killed some of those Junction Boys and put one into heat stroke that caused enough damage to his internal organs that he never played football again but also caused him health problems for the rest of his life.
Even Bear Bryan admitted years later that it was the worst damn fool thing he ever did and wished he had never done it.
I can't see why anyone thinks the Junction Boys is an example to be copied
I see an indoor facility as an advantage when it is raining cats and dogs, is too cold to effectively work out and the fact that in today's world, a school has to protects its players to the extent as to be concerned with lawsuits.
NT doesn't need any lawsuits for carelessness with heat-related injuries. Global warmring (IMHO) is making for what seems to be hotter August and Septembers (unless middle age is causing some of that, too)
Stebo is right, though, inasmuch as on the other side of the coin we can't pamper our players to the extent that they aren't ready for wet, humid-type weather they will encounter in Baton Rouge in a few weeks or very cold weather which is not as likely for a Sun Belt schedule.
We do have many big fish to fry at NT, but we also sorta' need to keep up with the NCAA D1-A school's athletic venue's arms race, too, and indoor practice facilities seems to be the latest rage among that group in the NCAA.
Wonder what some of our Texas largest high schools are spending on these facilities?
Whatever the case, at NT we would need something that would look nice because 50,000 interstate travelers drive by the Mean Green Athletic Village every day of the year (according to state stats on that subject).

Just a question for all the NT old timers...back in 1968-69 my Dad did his graduate work in the summer.. we would get an apartment and spend both summer terms up there...there was a bulding on campus called the Union Bulding...I remember it well as my parents went for coffee there and there was almost always a band or someone playing music when we were there. Does the bulding still exist?? I have only been on campus to Fouts for games....just thought I'd ask.
0-10 or 10-0 GREEN is the only way to go!!
Yes, the Union Bldg is still there but you would not recognize it as you last saw it.
Back when I arrived at NT in January of 1972, the Union was undergoing a dramatic re-make and expansion using the shell of the Union you knew as the main part of what would become (basically) the new NT Union.
Inside the new and improved 4 stories Union is also a runnning stream of which the water moves rapidly over polished rocks, a post office, a very large bookstore which includes Mean Green Gear/NT CD's from many College of Music ensembles including the NT Green Brigade marching band, UNT stuff/school supplies/graduation supplies/class rings can be ordered there, too, etc, etc, etc.
On the 3'rd floor is the Silver Eagle Suite where many banquets relating to campus and athletic activities have been held in the past. Many of those have now been moved to the newer Gateway Center near Fouts Field.
Ken14, most of our Mean Green Nation might be curious about what is happening now with you and family? The Mean Green Nation welcome all of you back to campus, but you'll need a map of the NT campus--I all but need a map of campus as it has changed very much since I was a student in the 1970's; but you would still see many familiar sights on campus, too.
Anyway, load up the family and show them where your NT Ex dad did his graduate work. If yall are able to come to Denton, this September 17'th might be a great day because that is our home football season opening Game Day as the Mean Green will play the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Fouts Field.
Ken14, you can get NT football tickets and Game Day info by calling 1-800-UNT-2366. They will also put you on their mailing list if you so request.

Don't get me wrong. I think its a shame we dont have one. But I know this is putting the cart before the horse. There are much more pressing needs that we need to spend money on.
Im just wishing we had one
2 Reasons NT Needs An Indoor Practice Facility:
(1) Its the latest trend to keep up with the Joneses in the NCAA D1-A facilities arms race.
(2) Its the latest trend to keep up with the Joneses in the NCAA D1-A facilities arms race.
Of course, NT is a unique situation inasmuch as we are building a whole new athletic complex consisting of numerous venues in as quick a period of time as possible and a project that will be capped off with our new 35-40,000 seat football stadium. I don't think many Texas HS's have similar projects nor any other Texas colleges or universities for that matter.
IMHO, we may need to build our indoor facility at NT before we start on our new football stadium but.............I also don't think we need to put a hideous looking piece of junk out at Eagle Point Campus. We (somewhat) already have that with a facility near the Murchison Performing Arts Center, although that facility has had many interior improvements the last 5 years. (If we could have just done something in the past with its exterior--the part people see).
But just like the Denton Outlaws owner, we need to wait as long as we need to wait to get the necessary funds to buld a first class looking facility. ***** With 50,000 interstate commuters who pass our Eagle Point Campus every day, all those passengers in all those cars need to see something pretty impressive that they can tell their Texas high school blue chip athlete sons and daughters about.
It's just way too hot in Texas in August and we don't need any more tragedies relating to the heat. Can probably get more work done when your not having to worry about any of your football players having heat related problems.
I think the City of Arlington and the Texas Rangers royally screwed up by not building a baseball stadium with a retractable roof as we speak about the hot Texas weather which I think global warming has been some influence.
GMG!
PS: Weatherford HS has an indoor practice facility? Guess I better go check that out this weekend. I do know they named their huge auditorium at their new HS after NT alum (and big Mean Green Club contributor) Jerry Durant of "JERRY'S AUTO-COMPLEX" fame.
-
Many don't. Baylor volleyball shares its facility with basketball, although they are working on fixing that when the indoor tennis courts get built in the next couple of years.
A&M and Texas both have volleyball specific facilities however:
Texas (capacity: 4,400):
A&M (capacity: 7,800):
Those are just off the top of my head.
The TAMU volleyball facility looks like their men's former varsity basketball faciliy, ie, G. Rollie White Coliseum.
Is UT's their former men's BB facility whose name escapes me at the moment?
Come to think of it, NT' old Snake Pit BB faciliyt now named after Coach Ken Bahnsen would have made a very nice volleyball venue, but I think NT is going to have a nice one AND in the new Mean Green Athletic Village.

It is now August 11th. Our nationally televised game with Troy is Tuesday, October 4th.
Walk into your bosses office tomorrow and request to be off by 2:00 or 3:00 on that day. Request now to trade with someone if you work some kind of shift. Take a day of vacation that day.
You have 2 months to plan for that game.
Athletic Dept. put something in the mail now. Send out an email. NT Exes, send out an email.
Remind everyone associated with North Texas that the game is on a weeknight.
"Get off early that day! Tuesday, October 4th, 2005!" --- Something
There is no excuse to be late arriving to that game.
I call B.S. on anyone that uses the commute from Dallas or Ft. Worth as an excuse not to show up and be in their seat at kickoff.
You have plenty of time.
Thank you.
Already been requested and approved. Good reminder, though, TheColonyEagle.
For the ESPN TV cameras, NT needs to round up 4,000 bandsmen, high school kids from all over Denton County, Junior MG Club members galore and all their parents AND all sitting under the south end zone Daktronics because the cameras will be focussed on that part of Fouts Field much of the night I'm sure.
Troy U with their national TV game last Fall vs Missouri was wise to do all that. It seemed that the TV cameras were more focussed on that large group of HS bands under Movie Gallery Stadium's large scoreboard as much as the sideline TV shots.

No mean green report practice update today. But stay tuned for tomorrow morning's practice, when the rookies and the vets meet up in practice for the first time. Also on the horizon on Sunday, when pads come on for the first time.
Do you know what time on Sunday? Is it open to the public? I have to work this Saturday and can't make the BBQ.
BTW, FFR, if you need more funds for that event, email me and I will catch up with you somewhere in Parker County with a czech.

Probably not at Fouts - I doubt that the University has a tuner on that big old thing - but we could get Sound Man to set up his big screen like he did for the Idaho game a few years back. That was a blast and I wish that we would have done that once or twice since then... Otherwise - we always have the Bas Pro-Shops/Embassy Suites route to go to - they pretty much are set up to get every game from here to Kiukuk.
Stebo, I could have sworn I saw 2 round gigantic contrast and brightness buttons on the back of our Daktronics!
(sorry--that was my Norm Hitzhges dad joke of the day)!
Surely there would be a way to get a TV broadcast on the Daktronics, right?
Wonder who would have the Daktronics guide where we could check that out?
-
For those of us who will be here in Texas, the Metroplex (and beyond) on September 10'th and might want to congregate as MG fans at one location, is it possible for this game to be shown on the giant screen of the Fouts Field Daktronics as far as TV copyright laws are concerned?

exactly, I think if the athletic dept. was able to reach out to the students before the break and give incentives to coming to the game, then the dent wouldn't be so bad, or wouldn't be noticable at all. With the promotion that has gone the last few years, it won't help when there is a game that weekend, and most of the students who are gone have no clue of it even happening. Still with a growing student fan base I think you have to give the casual student fan an incentive to coming back to Denton that weekend and cutting their break short. Like what I have learned in economics, people respond to incentives.
I'm having to cut my break short here in Houston to make it back up to the game, probably meaning I'll get at max 3 days here in Houston for my break.
I hear what all are saying about the NT students, but I had a UHouston grad/alum (who lived in DFW) sit by me couple years back and he said NT had as many (or more) of our students at Fouts Field games than the Coogs did at Robertson Stadium.
IMHO, we should focus more on those 500,000 citizens who live in Denton County. We seem to not have an aggressive plan to do such (unless its a top secret plan or something). Everyone put their numbers cap on:
NT Enrollment..........32,000 (plus 5,000+/- NT employees)
Denton County......500,000
Marketing focus? You be the judge.

I doubt Arkansas State would want to play a Nov 19th date @ Army then turn around 3 days later and play @ NT...
and didnt we already switch this game once?
Yeah, we flip-flopped our schedule which gave ASU the opportunity to play Army. Not totally sure that was in our best interest either; but what's done is done.
The 2005 NT football schedule is the most out of sync schedule I can recall in 30 plus years, except for a 2 or 3 seasons we only had 4 home games at Fouts quite some time ago. I'm sure our guys will meet the challenge, though.

Wonder how soon Coach Dickey installs the Middle TN game plan?
Hope our players have several copies of some video of last years game, that would be most beneficial (expecially if they watch the video).

I wasnt really referring to the average MG fan, moreso the student. When I was in college and my parents lived in Houston, it was nice to have a weekend away before finals. Many students may have parents in the Metroplex, and I see no reason why they couldnt make it. Some people have family in from out of town on that weekend and it makes it difficult to get away.
I live in Houston now, but I will be at the game that Saturday. I'm making a college football weekend of it. Gonna go to Kyle Field and watch the Lonestar Showdown friday, then cruise up to Denton for Saturday nights game.
Agree with Eagle-96, having it on TV might hurt attendance. Theres just alot of factors that lead me to believe that will be our LOWEST attendance game of the year
This should be one of those TV games that they (in deed) move to Tuesday night if they televise this game; because if memory serves me, we did that last year on ESPN2 the week of Turkey Day AND on a Tuesday night.
-
I doubt he'll get to #2 on the depth chart. He's behind Justin Tuck, who was a star and team MVP at Notre Dame. The Giants drafted him in the 3rd round. Now, Tuck's a little undersized, so Adrian has a shot, and we've had players overcome such situations before (Kassell comes to mind), but it would be an uphill battle for him just to get to #2.
NT players who have overcome? How about starting with ex Mean Green great Brian Waters who "only" made the NFL's All Pro team last year and with NT ex great and All American Abner Haynes' former team--the Kansas City Chiefs?
-
Briefly ...
Freshman Eddrick Gilmore worked with UNT's tight ends on the first day of practice. Gilmore was considered a college prospect as both a tight end and defensive end during his senior year at Alief Hastings. ... Former Sanger standout Chris Higgs, the younger brother of UNT safety Cliff Higgs, has joined the Mean Green as a walk-on.

I think many of us will applaud the NT Intercollegiate Department of Athletics in keeping their official board very up-to-date. Its becoming a great source of hot-off-the press news and feature articles all of us internet news-hounds will probably appreciate more than just about anyone.
GREAT JOB NT ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT !

Looks like they are done "sewing" the field. I think now they insert the rubber under the ... uh ... "grass"?
As with many subjects on GMG.com, I'm also a complete novice with photography, too; but was the photo of Fouts taken with a concave lens as to make the NT student side look almost flattened out?!?!?
If so, I need that camera to take my next portrait, or its back to the old wide-angle lens for me once again.

Be sure to catch 4, 5, 8, & 11 for coverage on tonights newscasts!!!
Is it just me, or are the uniform numbers huge this year?
Sure a lot more media types with microphones & TV cameras trying to get quotes from Coach Dickey and our football stars than there used to be in our march through purgatory days of years gone by, eh?
Good to see that Mean Green Media Day was an apparent success.

If our defense can stop anyone we will be very competitive team this year. I believe that our coaching staff is wondering how effective this unit will be.
The biggest question mark for this season.
Of course, if you have a "run-oriented" offense (which we do) with some pretty good running backs (of which we have 4 of those) and become an offensive juggernaut (which many think we'll be this season for some [insert sublimenal PCobbs/JThomas] reason; and we have a Mean Green offense that uses a lot of clock (which we should) THEN......... you don't have to have a "monsters of the midway" type of defense out on the field; although, I think we will have a pretty good defense as the season progresses.
Lets check out the Mean Green Report this evening to see if Willie Ransom will be part of it.
-
Uh, "little ol' North Texas?"
Obviously another DFW-ite who hasn't been on our campus in about 5 years, eh? Sorta' fun playing the under-dog role, though, isn't it?
Good article from Jeff Wilson though, and if he is the beat writer for the Mean Green this year, I'm sure he has been on campus not that long ago, right?
GMG!
PS: Harry, we won't allow this to happen anymore on whoever is hacking GoMeanGreen.com (or whatever the problem was)!
Great job, guys, and look forward to the next Mean Green Report which I think you told me was sometimes today or this evening?

After his Soph year at Oakridge my grandson...applied for and was employed by the Texas Rangers baseball club as a bat boy. He worked his Jr. and Sr. years and will continue to work for them as he enters TCU to major in their accounting program.
This week he was awarded a Texas Rangers baseball club scholarship of $1,000 per semester each semester is in college. Since he is in a 5 year program that amounts to $10,000. Every little bit helps. He also received an academic ship at TCU of about $12,000 which still so many $.
If you watch a ranger broadcast his name is Dustin and he collects the bats after ranger hitters bat, gets water to the u mps in the 7th inning stretch, helps load and unload equipment for travel. etc. Last year he delivered balls to the plate umpire.
Congrats to you and your grandson, Charles. Hope you can bring him to some MG football games this Fall, although he may be wearing some shade of purple.

Last Place 388: Tampa-St. Pete
TSN has most definitely run out of topics.
Right after a certain city in the northern part of Texas received a last place designation in this TSN poll a few years ago, didn't a certain athletic department (in that northern Texas city) hire a marketing firm owned by exes of 1 of that city's 2 universities, turned em' loose for an entire summer, then they (with many of that town's movers and shakers) produced the largest (at the time) football crowd in that school's 100+ year history? Wasn't that about the time that happened?
