  1. The month of June has been a whirlwind for Texas A&M football.

With the dead period approaching beginning Sunday night at midnight, the Aggies have had four big recruiting weekends this month.

Those include the nation's top-ranked wide receiver, five-star USC commit Zachariah Branch. National top-150 wide receiver Tyler Williams is also on the visitor list.

The other was North Texas transfer KD Davis, who was an All-Conference USA pick in 2021.

UTEP’s Miner Caravan made a quick stop 11 a.m.-2 p.m., June 25 at Showtyme Sports Bar and Grill located at 2106 North Zaragoza Road. Showtyme is owned by current Green Bay Packers running back, and former UTEP Miner, Aaron Jones.

“This will be a great opportunity for the fans to come out, meet and engage with our coaches and student-athletes, and get fired up for our fall sports seasons,” UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter said.

Miner Caravan is part of the 915 campaign, which began earlier this month in order sell out UTEP’s first football game against North Texas on Aug. 27. The capacity of the Sun Bowl Stadium is 45,971 and they have currently sold over 30,000 tickets; a UTEP game at the Sun Bowl has not sold out since 2008. This will also be the first time in 30 years that the Miners have opened the football season at home with a conference game.

“I’ve heard all about the glory days of UTEP Football in the ’60s, the ’80s and the early 2000s, when the Sun Bowl was packed,” UTEP football head Coach Dana Dimel said. “We’ve seen how loud the place can get, even when there’s 20,000 in attendance. We had 30,000 for a game last season against UTSA and the atmosphere was electric, but we haven’t gotten to 40,000. I hope we can get there against North Texas, because I think our players deserve it.”

  3. EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In 65 days the UTEP football season will get underway as the Miners host North Texas at the Sun Bowl on August 27th.

UTEP Athletics is building up the hype for this year’s football team after the historic season the program had in 2021-2022. The plan is to sell out the Sun Bowl for their first game and it looks like they are getting close.

According to UTEP Athletics, they have sold 30,635 tickets for the season opener and only 34% of tickets remain. The Sun Bowl holds a capacity of 45,971 fans.

“Coming off a winning season like last year they [coaching staff] put a lot more on us, push us a lot harder, the grind has been tougher,” said Prince. “We’ve had a lot of early mornings and long days so it’s been pretty good compared to different summers.”

The Miners open up their 2022 football season on Aug. 27 against North Texas, which will be the first time UTEP opens with a conference game since 1994, at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

  4. Worst Value: UTSA +200

No team will suffer more turnover to the offensive roster in terms of production than UTSA. Running back Sincere McCormick moves on, as Arkansas transfer Trelon Smith looks to keep the ground attack moving for head coach Jeff Traylor.

Quarterback Frank Harris returns, but completing more big-time throws than turnover-worthy plays is the biggest handicap when teams don’t have to load the box to defend McCormick.

Spring is in the air, so is the football at UTSA's Spring Game. Here's some of the early action until we roll out some more at 9:45 on Max Sports. Frank Harris and Cam Peters with TD passes to this point. pic.twitter.com/4MsoVnxJ0C

    — Chuck Miketinac (@MaxSportsSA) April 15, 2022

UTSA returns just 48% on the defensive side of the football, but maintaining a top-10 rank in Finishing Drives will be the key to winning Conference USA.

This is a tough schedule for the Roadrunners, who hit the road to face co-favorite UAB in November while hosting Western Kentucky and UTEP — two teams that are expected to compete for the conference.

Traylor is expected to win 4.7 conference games this season, putting UTSA in the mix for the championship game, along with UAB and Western Kentucky. Odds of winning Conference USA sit at +440, per Poisson Distribution, making the +200 odds inflated and a pass through the preseason.

  5. Best Value: UTEP +3000

The hard work of head coach Dana Dimel has finally started to pay off. UTEP was a team total under for bettors every preseason, but that has changed since the 2020 pandemic season.

Hungry to not only exceed a low win total but to make the postseason, UTEP won seven games and lost by just one score to Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl last season. The hard work is far from over for Dimel, as Conference USA transitions three teams to the Sun Belt.

    pic.twitter.com/9kJmPTBdep

    — Sideline CFB (@SidelineCFB) November 13, 2021

Jacob Cowing exits as the deep threat on the Miners offense, but quarterback Gavin Hardison has the range to hit any skill position player on the field.

While explosiveness and Havoc Allowed are key on offense, the Miners return 63% of a defense that finished top-20 nationally in Success Rate.

UTEP’s raw conference win total sits at 3.8, well short of projections for the top teams in Conference USA.

Where the Miners have a break is scheduling, as UAB and Western Kentucky are not on a division-less schedule. However, conference bottom feeders in Rice, Florida International and Louisiana Tech are on the schedule, giving UTEP an outside chance of playing in the conference championship game.

  6. Mason Fine can tell you about his place on this Saskatchewan Roughriders team.

    70c8fc80

But on this National Indigenous People’s Day, he’s especially proud of his background.

Fine is a member of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma.

Growing up, Fine says he was well-supported by his community. It was when he entered college at the University of North Texas that he first realized how important his Indigenous identity was.

“In college, I became aware of how unique and how awesome it was and that developed a passion into being a role model and being someone in the community who can represent the state of Texas and Oklahoma and my hometown and Cherokee Nation,” Fine said.

“That’s when I became aware of how much of an impact I wanted to make in the future.”

During his time in college, Fine received an overwhelming amount of support from the Cherokee Nation back in Oklahoma. They made and sold shirts, covered him in newspapers and praised him throughout social media.

“They really brought more awareness towards the Indigenous community and culture which was awesome.”

Fine says those college experiences prepared him for his time in Saskatchewan.

  7. The addition of the six new schools creates a full 14 school league and gives ECU something that it has never had before, an in-state rival. UNC Charlotte will be the second school in North Carolina to join the American since its inception in 2013 with ECU being the first.

In the school’s history, UNCC has had documented rivalries with Davidson University, Appalachian State University and Cincinnati. Between 1995 to 2005, Charlotte upset Cincinnati’s men’s basketball teams ranked No. 3, No. 8, No. 18 and No. 20 in the country. In more recent years, the basketball rivalry carried into Davidson with the App State rivalry being created through football.

“I’m excited for them to come in so that we can create that rivalry even more,” McNeill said. “It also gives us an opportunity to have a bus trip in conference instead of flying all the time so I am excited for that rival.”

All schools joining the program except UTSA will be integrating into the American in 2022, joining one or two sport programs before every school becomes full members in 2023. The six former Conference USA schools will join the teams retained by the AAC.

The conference’s founding members in the University of Memphis, Southern Methodist University, University of South Florida and Temple University will remain with the program as well as the programs that joined later including ECU, Tulane and Tulsa.

  8. SMU Mustangs Preview 2022: Offense

It’s a Rhett Lashlee-coached team. It’s going to throw the ball – he’s a former SMU offensive coordinator under Sonny Dykes – and it’s going to crank up the production.

The offense is loaded with experienced parts, good skill guys, and the line to make it all work from the No. 1 AAC attack last year.

It led the league with 466 yards and 38 points per game, but it couldn’t rise up and come through down the stretch of a rough second half of the season.

Lashlee and offensive coordinator Casey Woods have their veteran quarterback to make it all go. Former Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai threw for over 3,600 yards and 39 touchdowns with 12 picks in an All-AAC season, and Preston Stone is a rising talent who’ll get every shot at the gig.

The receivers are there to make it all rock, even with Danny Gray, Reggie Roberson, and TE Grant Calcaterra – three of the team’s top four targets – done.

Leading receiver Rashee Rice – 64 catches with nine scores – is back – he’s the No. 1 guy – and the corps landed a few great parts with All-Conference USA target Jake Bailey from Rice, Beau Corrales from North Carolina, and Kelvontay Dixon from Texas.

The running game should be like it was last year. It might not blast away for a gazillion yards per game, but as long as it’s averaging around 4.6 yards per carry again, it’ll be doing its job.

Longtime all-around factor Ulysses Bentley is off to Ole Miss, but former North Texas transfer Tre Siggers is back after averaging five yards per pop with nine scores, and with a team-high 727 yards.

TJ McDaniel is back after suffering an injury, and ready to roll is Alabama transfer Camar Wheaton. The talent is there from Wheaton and the rest of the backs to do the job.

The SMU line will play around with the veteran parts – four starters are expected back from the end of last year – but Alan Ali is off to TCU and the depth will have to come from the transfer portal. Overall, the group that was the best in the AAC in pass protection should be fine once the staff comes up with the right starting five.

  12. Graham Harrell – Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach (First season at WVU)

One of Brown’s biggest offseason moves was the hiring of Harrell, a former record-setting QB at Texas Tech who has quickly become one of the most respected offensive minds in the sport. Harrell has served stints as OC and quarterbacks coach at North Texas (2016-18) and USC (2019-21), forming a relationship with new WVU quarterback JT Daniels at the latter stop. Last season, USC led the Pac-12 in passing offense, red zone offense and third down conversion percentage, ranking in the top 20 nationally in each category. Harrell also produced back-to-back top 25 offenses at North Texas.

  13. The actor was announced to be playing the main character in a film about the famous North Texas wrestling family.

LOS ANGELES — For decades, thousands of wrestling fans around North Texas would pack the Dallas Sportatorium to watch the Von Erich family fight off opponents from all over the country like the Fabulous Freebirds.

This beloved family didn't have a happy ending, however.

The promoter of World Class Championship Wrestling, Dallas' local wrestling territory from the '60s through the '80s, was Fritz Von Erich. He would live to see five of his six sons, some of whom were the star wrestlers of WCCW, die tragically.
