  1. I think this may be an opportunity to help out two very needy athletic programs.  There should be a barbeque cookoff before the game.  Proceeds going to benefit the athletic departments of each respective University.  It also could prove who makes the best parking lot barbeque in the greater DFW area.  I think it could get a lot of people interested in these programs.  This is just an idea.  I was just wondering if anyone else could see the same opportunity.

If you're talking about a North Texas vs SMU BBQ cookoff, keep in mind that the SMU fans will more than likely oursource Coopers out of Llano to do the cooking for them. rolleyes.gif

  2. What about the 17 year old HS student that died the past weekend from rabies after being bitten by a bat? Story is, two weeks ago while the young man was sleeping with his window open, a bat flew in and bit him. Over the past week or so, the man new something had bitten him but showed no sign of problems. Then the rabies developed and it was too late to treat. Sad story.

  3. Look, i'm not remotely political, and I would shed a tear or two for the drastic changing that seems imminent for Fry St., but generally speaking, a "more conservative student" in the way I believe it was presented here, supports athletics and school pride 5000x more than those students who give Denton it's "character"....

... I have as many memories as the next guy, but i want to see NT advance, not spin its wheels. If I go back to Denton in 10 years and it looks the same as it does today, we have a major, major problem.

That doesn't mean I'm blindly supporting development, either. I want to see something that integrates the city's history and collegiate atmosphere, of course -- but in a day and age when many see "conservative" as a dirty word, I wish we had 5,000 more "conservative" students. Check out the booster clubs and stadiums and avid financial supporters of very successful major universities, and I'll show you 95% or higher "conservative" students -- again I don't think this is simply a political term in this case. I see what he was getting at -- i think.

The hippie is great background noise and NT folklore, but he's really not helping a damn thing. "Atmosphere" is far less important to me that kicking apathy out of Denton and seeing a group of energized, dedicated-for-life go getters fill the campus. If Starbucks gets them there (again, not being literal), then hell, put a Starbucks on every street in town.

Excellent post! I might add that when I attended NT back in the '60's, Fry street had your typical mom and pop stores, typical for that time frame. Clothing stores, cleaners, a small restaurant on the corner (had pretty good hamburgers if I recall). Now all I see in that area is crappy looking facades housing seedy looking bars and dope hangouts. I don't mind the bars, but damn, dress them up a bit!

  4. They already have a place to go, it's called College Station, where everyone looks alike and the chicks have beerguts.

I have two daughters that attend a $ m, and after spending several years of moving them so far, I hate to say this buy that school has some fine looking women. Like all schools, there are some dogs too.

  5. I left Thursday night to take the family on a 3 day vacation in Galveston.   I became extremely sick, the food at Willey G's was bad, the weather sucked, kid was whining that all he wanted to do was go home, oh and my wife hurt her back (about the only good thing was the traffic  and no tickets).

We pulled up to the front of the house and there was a box on the front porch.   My Mean Green hitch came in!   Looks really really sweet on my Tundra (Chrome is the way to go!).   If only I could have had it on the truck for the trip.  Im sure It would have been noticed.  Way too many aTm and UT emblems and not enough NT.

Rick, you ough to show these to the University, I would be that they'd sell.  (It is kinda of neat to have something hardly anybody has!).

Again, thanks for having something nice on my doorstep at the end of a Hellish vacation.

    Burl

If you can, next time check with some of us coastal beach bums before you spend mucho money on crappy food at Willie G's and other tourist type places. Island Eagle is from Galveston and probably knows of other more worthy restaurants to spend you money - and not get sick! ph34r.gif

  6. “There were a lot of people who asked why we were putting money into athletics when we had a dismal record,” Pohl said. “I said it was because we haven’t put enough money into athletics to be successful.”

This about sums up NT athletics since the beginning of time. I truly hope we do not regress.

  7. We don't need any bandwagon fans like him.

You are either for us or against us. You can have your blood money MM!!!

Rooting for 2 teams is absurd and dumb.

Hold on there. Don't forget that Mac is a businessman. He'll support as many teams as he can financially, hoping that the financial rewards, more funiture sales, will far outweigh his expenses. If you ever attend an aggie game, Matress Mac sponsorship ads appear all over the Jumbotron at Kyle field. I'm sure he supports U of H and maybe even Rice. If I had his money, I'd do the same thing. Of course, the majority would go to UNT.
