  1. No Problem. I love my alma mater. Although I have degrees from Florida State and The University of Wisconsin - Madison, I love UNT more than any of them!!!! GO MEAN GREEN!!!
  2. Here is a copy of the last contract Jim Leavitt signed. Contract
  3. Here are a couple of points to remember about the athletic fee. When I was SGA president and passed the fee, we dedicated $3 per credit hour (from student service fees to athletics) - the most recent data has UNT student with a total of about 840,000 credit hours for the fall, spring and summer. This comes to about $2.5 million the athletics department was getting from that dedicated fee. The legislation stated that with the new fee, the $3 would go away (essentially) and there would be a new $10 fee (which is really a $7 net increase in fees). So if we use the 840,000 credit hour number again (which of course will go up with increased enrollment) - the new figure is $8.4 million. This section of the legislation state (e) Authorizes revenue from the fee charged under this section to be used only for financing, constructing, operating, maintaining, or improving an athletic facility or for operating an intercollegiate athletics program at UNT. So technically, this new fee can be used to fund the salary of the new football coach. Another section states (and I had this authority when I was president) - that the fee can be raised no more than 10% without a vote of the student body. So in essence the SGA could raise the fee a few percentage points every year. Next, (j) Prohibits the fee from being charged after the fifth academic year in which the fee is first charged unless, before the end of that academic year, the university has issued bonds payable from the fee, in which event the fee is prohibited from being charged after the academic year in which all such bonds, including refunding bonds for those bonds, have been fully paid. So I would assume that UNT would issue bonds to 1) pay down the debt and 2) allow the few to be in place for a much longer amount of time - lets say 30 years. As an example, the rec center cost about $31 million to build. The students are paying a $50 per semester fee for the rec center. It looks like the annual debt service payments are about $2.6 million. I would assume that our annual debt service payments would be a little under $5 million. Lastly, we have to remember that the fee can only pay for 50% of the stadium and the other has to come from private donations. So in a way we would need to bring in half or $2.5 million to pay down the debt. So if we sold all of our 700 club level seats, that would bring about $1.6 million annually. Also, if all 21 suites were sold ($20,000 annual commitment for 5-6 years - not to mention the the donation required) we could see revenue upwards of $21 million per year - just from the suites alone. I know that this is a lot - but in essence, yes I think that we just might have the money to pay a coach and his staff a nice salary.
  4. For me, the most interesting point from the press conference last night was the fact Rick stated he wanted a coach in place by the end of the season - that is us having a new coach in place in about 5 weeks. To me, that points at a coach who is currently not coaching a team. A number of the coaches that are on the list (who are currently coaching) are with teams that will most likely be playing in a bowl game - and with Oklahoma (Kevin Wilson or Jay Norvell) they might be coaching until January. Just an observation.
  5. The part that I love the most and the is a defensive coach - something that I think we have been lacking for a long time.
  6. Just a side note - he did make $187,000 in this position.
  7. At UT - they have a person that is the Director of High School Relations and Player Development. Here is his job description on the site: A veteran of 29 seasons as a collegiate assistant coach, including 20 tutoring running backs, nine in the state of Texas and 12 in the Southwest, Ken Rucker enters his soxth season at The University of Texas. He begins his third year in the position of director of high school relations and player development after spending three years as running backs coach. Rucker works extensively with the High School Coaches Clinic and summer camps while assisting with the development of the Longhorn football players. He also works closely in managing prospects visits on campus and coordinating campus and facility tours for unofficial visits. In working with the current team, Rucker helps manage and oversee many of their off-the-field responsibilities while assisting in their community service efforts.
  8. It seems like the most obvious choice!!
  9. I am attaching Coach Dodge's contract for you to look at. TD Contract There are a few interesting clauses in the contract: - If TD were to get fired, UNT would owe him about $440,000 (2 years of base salary, including 5% increases), which comes out to about $18,000 per month (24 months of remaining contract) - That UNT has the right to reassign TD to any position at UNT, in that case he would receive his base salary ($185,000) and benefits. However, if TD refuses to accept the reassignment, then UNT can fire him for just cause - which in that case, UNT can cease all payments to him. - TD has to make a reasonable effort to obtain comparable employment. At that time, UNT's financial responsibility will with be reduced or cease. If TD does not notify UNT 10 days after official employment, then all financial obligations shall cease. - If TD quits, he has to pay back 1 year of his salary to UNT.

  11. McKinney working to attract University of North Texas to city McKinney city officials recently stepped up discussions with senior administrators at the University of North Texas (UNT) to establish a campus in that city. They offered to give the former Collin County Courthouse to UNT along with as much as $10 million to renovate the facility if college officials agree to establish a campus in McKinney, said a former president of UNT. McKinney city officials bought the old county courthouse in 2006 and planned to renovate it into a municipal center. Those plans were dropped when estimates for the needed renovations and demolition indicated it would cost twice as much to renovate the old courthouse as to build a new facility, said Councilwoman Geralyn Kever (pictured). City officials are waiting for a response on whether college officials will decide to renovate the old courthouse into a campus before ordering its demolition, Kever said. University officials already have eliminated one structure from consideration and most likely will decide a new building is best for a campus in McKinney, she said. And city staff plans to continue discussion of other possible sites for a UNT campus.
  12. I think that the X-Factor in all of this is Dr. Rawlins. From a source close to the situation - it was Dr. Rawlins who made one phone call to the president at the University of Ciny (both in the Metro Conference) to form Conference USA, alone with UAB from the Sun Belt Conference; Marquette and Saint Louis from the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now the Horizon League), and independent DePaul. Dayton joined in 1993. Remember this is a man who served twice on the NCAA board of directors and as chair of the PAC-10, Conference USA and Great Midwest Athletic Conferences. You can not tell me that this man does not have access to people of influence and power. I am sure he is on the phone right now trying to get UNT in the best possible situation. To me, this is a great situation. A man, like Dr. Rawlins who knows that in's and out's of conference restructuring, while we are in the process of building a new stadium. I think that he is 100% the X-Factor in this equation.
  13. I was looking at the live feed and the stadium renderings. I know we are going to build the two levels of seating on the home side of the stadium, but i was wondering about the rest of the stadium. Are we just going to have lower bowl level seating all the way around - and the "winged" seating section and the second level of seating on the visitor side coming later down the road? Just wondering.
  14. One thing you have to consider also, is that the Big 10 prides itself on athletics AND academics. Currently all 11 members of the Big 10 (including The University of Chicago) are all part of the AAU. The members that are listed to be part of the Big 10 are all members of the AAU. So it would be a win win for all of those involved.
  15. http://collegesportsinfo.com/conference-realignment-grid/ North Texas Sunbelt Comfortable in the Sunbelt, but could be targeted by CUSA if there were a Southwest conference split. On the list of candidates to join the WAC as replacements for Rice, Tulsa, SMU, and UTEP. Considered highly by CUSA before they eventually chose UTEP. Probable: Remains in Sunbelt Longshot: candidate for CUSA should they seek replacements

  17. DETROIT -- Organizers of the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl say they have a deal that will pit Big Ten and Mid-American conference teams against each other yearly through 2013. The deal announced Monday calls for the No. 8 bowl-eligible Big Ten team to face the No. 1 or No. 2 MAC team at Detroit's Ford Field for the December game. The bowl will have first pick of a MAC team in 2010 and 2012 and second pick in 2011 and 2013. If the Big Ten doesn't have eight bowl-eligible teams, the Little Caesars bowl will get a Sun Belt Conference team. Last year the Big Ten only had 6 teams that were bowl-eligible.

  20. Am I the only person that is pissed right now about the DMN Sports section online? I was going on, hoping to see a story about UNT, but all I see is a story about TTU heading to the NIT. What is up with that?
  21. With Houston winning the C-USA Tourney, how does that affect us? As of now, we have have RPI of 104 (down from 99 yesterday) and they have a RPI of 112.
