  1. EagleD, you lost a lot of wannabe support for your comments when you started with, "You people..."    Somehow that is a tone that only 8th grade teachers should be using to their classes.

The "You people" I was referring to were the first posters on this thread. Nothing more, nothing less. Sorry if it was misinterpreted.

    GO MEAN GREEN !!!!!!!!!!

  2. You consider "wannabe" name calling?  huh.gif My, but aren't you the hot-house orchid.

No, I consider "bootlicker" name calling. Although I'm not sure I know what it means.

Silver, I agree with you on most points, I'm just tired of hearing rick complain about UT at every turn. As though they are the only school in America with a huge athletic budget. Last I checked Ohio State, OU, Notre Dame, USC, Stanford, A&M etc. all have tons of money. rick has some deep abiding hatred for UT. And that's cool, I have schools (TTech) I want to fail miserably, but I'm not going to be so petty as to smear them. If, god forbid, Mike Leach were to get Tech a National Championship, I'd congratulate my Red Raider friends and move on. You will never, I repeat NEVER hear rick take that high road towards Texas. He wouldn't know a high road if he was in the Alps.

And I'm jealous and frustrated too. I'm just trying to show some class. Isn't there a saying about catching more flies with honey?

  3. You people amaze me.

First, what does ANY of this have to do with the NT football forum?

Second, You could focus on the positives of this story which are: WFAA, a station almost everyone here believes to kiss SMU's butt, went to Denton to talk to a UNT professsor about hearing loss. They get numerous sound bites from students (some of whom are wearing NT stufff), and this gives NT exposure in the DFW area which most people on this board say we don't get. But no. You have to focus on a 4 second sound bite from a guy you don't know, have never met and start calling him names. You have learned well from your dark lord and master; attack and smear anyone different from you.

Third, Go to any campus in America and you will see other college logos different from that school. My neighbor graduated from A&M, yet went to UT Law. He wore Aggie maroon all the time and got very little flack for doing it. You see TSU, A&M, Harvard (et al) logos on UT's campus all the time. Let's say there's a student, no better yet, an employee at UT who, I don't know, has a NT flag raised in his office. DOESN'T HE KNOW WHAT SCHOOL HE'S AT? According to Rick, this sucker should be persecuted until he learns the error of his ways and succombs to wearing burnt orange.

Now that being said, I'd like nothing better than to see people wearing nothing but Mean Green paraphanalia on our campus. But just b/c someone wears a Texas sweatshirt is no reason to lambaste him and start calling him names. Unless your heart is just filled with that much hatred. Or maybe it's jealousy...

  4. JUST RESPONDING TO UNTLIFER...

    Then make it a PM.

Plumm, I agree with you more than I disagree with you, but if you are going to resond to just one person with an essay, then make it personal message.

That being said, I'm hesitant to engage in PM's with people from this board, 'cause I don't want another person wishing me bodily harm just b/c I disagree with them.

Back to the subject at hand...

It is nice to hear DD grow a set. I hope he keeps this swagger through the season.

Few seniors were in attendance? Isn't this banquet in many ways to honor those seniors? That's a little unsettling, but then again our two most heralded senior were busy in Hawaii. smile.gif

It sounds like it was a good time and I wish I could have been there. I'm glad Rick is such a good fan that the dialogue about tortilla-gate was light hearted.

    Here's to better times ahead.

Now to sidetrack this thread... Anyone catch Mitch Maher interviewed at halftime of the men's game in Arkansas? I got sidetracked and could not listen.

  5. Well, he might not have Hall's face, but he's got Hall's hair from a few years back. Anyone remember his Mick Jagger?

And he went to Kilgore JC. Go Rangers!!!!!! It is the only school I went to that the colors weren't green and white. Nice to see some East Texas recruiting going on!

  6. While it's true most people who go to Annapolis or West Point are aiming for military aspirations, don't discount the football program Navy has put together lately. Haven't they done pretty well the last few years? It's possible he was recruited.

Also know that some people aren't cut out for the military institutions. Not that I went there, but I have a little experience with the trials and tribulations of the first year at Annapolis. If your freshman year was hard at NT, you ain't seen jack compared to what those kids go through. Keep an eye on him. If he decides to bail during "Plebe Summer", which a number of kids do, we can still recruit him.

BTW the campus in Annapolis is beautiful!

  7. Back in the mid 70's (Blakely era) you could win the use of a AMC Pacer for a year if you hit a half court shot at halftime.

If the car would last a year, that is.

As a student in the early 90's I went to a LOT of games, but not b/c of promotions. I just have a good time at basketball games. I can honestly say I don't remember any specific promotion. If you can call Bill Mercer's "Broadcast Sports" class a promotion, that got me to a lot of games one semester. For those not familiar with this course (and I believe he's teaching it again), your assignment each week was to attend a game (basketball or football depending on the term) and do play by play into a tape recorder. My buddy and I would go to the women's games, I'd do play by play and he'd do color (just for fun). It was a good warm up for the men's game which came later that night. By then I'd be in the middle of a raucus student section (good nat sound) and once I got past the stage fright issue it'd be a LOT OF FUN!

Sometime's I want to try that all over again to see if I could retain any pointers Mercer gave me, but now I like to cheer and yell (and drink a little beer) a bit too much. I never was very good. Bill always said football was the hardest sport to announce b/c so much happens at one time, but at least you have stuff to talk about. I never tried baseball, but I suspect there'd ba a lot of dead air.

Sorry to derail the thread, I just took a trip down memory lane.

  8. I watched both games on line from Austin and they really looked good. I'm surprised the counted attendance was over 2,000. Judging from the camera shots it did not appear to be that many, but looks can be deceiving. We really need to have people behind the baskets. Whatever crowd was their sounded loud and proud!

What about the students that stayed from the womens game and didn't re-scan their ID.

That would add about 20 people. I'm just kidding, but on line it really looked like there was NOONE there for the women's game.

If this team keeps winning, people will come. Fans want to see a winner. This is especially true in basketball. Fans also want to see an exciting brand of ball and JJ lets his team jack up three's. Nothing gets a crowd rockin' like swishes from behind the arc. I'm gonna try like hell to road trip to a game in Feb.

Great game from the men and the crowd.

  9. Poor rebounding, but this team has been scrappy the entire half. They fought back to get it to within three. This game was delayed b/c the officials were late to the game. I don't know why. I assume the men's game will be pushed back as well. Although having two games going on at the same time might boost attendance.

What a night. Two NT games via the 'net, Spurs on TNT, and the Mavs on FOXSW (although in Austin we don't get the Mav's games).

If I weren't sitting at home with pneumonia, I'd hoist a beer.

  10. No tats here. But I've said since I was in college, if the Men's BB or Football team cracks the Top 25, permanent ink will go somewhere on my body. Probably an interlocking NT on my ankle. During Booger's junior year, when we were getting a few votes, I started looking at designs. This year I put those designs back in the filing cabinet.

  11. Personally I'd like to see us play Houston.

If we could schedule Tech, that'd be cool too, 'cause of the brief history we have with them.

But the most logical choice here is TCU. (I haven't checked their schedule to see if they have an opening). We'd be that much closer to a Metroplex champion. Do SMU and TCU play each other this year?

  12.

I really need to get a life Euless, because in addition to UNT games, I try to catch all the local high school talent and teams in the metroplex.

If you stop doing this I'll get absolutely NO recruiting data. Know there are a number of us who look forward to your analysis. I don't think you came off as too critical of JJ, you just posed a question.

I think most of us were willing to give JJ a few years to get his own recruits and build the program. Now we are asking for results. Not huge results, just be a contender in conference, and if we can't get to the big dance (NCAA tourney), the junior prom (NIT) will do for now.

Personality does go a long way. I think we'd all forgive DD a little more if he was more personable in the media.

  13. So now, not only am I a liar and unamerican, I'm now a Democrat?  You have gone too far this time.   laugh.gif

    Rick

You're too arrogant and self-righteous to be a Democrat. But a liar and thief, you are perfect for the Republican party.

Seriously, though. Do you tell your kids, "It's not O.K. to steal ... unless I approve of it first."?

  14. His win totals are:

    Year 1: 15

I guess I just don't remember him winning 15 games his first season. My bad.

As a general rule I defer to Cooley on the assessment of this team. He follows NT Bball A LOT closer than I. He also seems fair in his judgements. His critisisms have merit, backed up by facts (no knee jerk responses) that goes a long way.

I have to say I'm pretty pleased with JJ, but there is always room for improvement.

  15. What do I want to see out of our basketball program?

    1. Q. Continual progress (i.e. wins)

    A. I think he's continually increased his wins. I'm too lazy today to look it up, but I think so.

    2. Q. Can he coach good fundamentals?

    A. It seems like it, but the last game was not a good indication. I am definitely no basketball coach, but judging from what he inherited...

    3. Q. Can he recruit?

    A. At first look it appears he's made some good connections, and gotten some good transfers. But again, I am no recruiter, so I don't know what he's done locally. Even though he's not landed a kid from DFW, what kind of relationship does he have with local coaches, and high schools? I don't know? We can't rely on transfers. So for numerous reasons we have to develop local talent. Right now it looks like he's not done that.

    4. Q. A coach who can work the media machine.

    A. Since our media machine is broken, and gets very little use, every time I see him on TV he seems polished, and appealing.

I know this is a vague summary, but I think he's doing a good job. I am waiting for a breakout year, though. This year would be nice, but I'll give him another year before I complain. He started with such a bad program.

  16. No problem.  Yeah, the guy I referred to was selling them out of the back of his car, 1,000's of them.  It was genius, like when Bozworth sold the "I hate the Boz" T shirts in Denver.  No one knew he was doing it himself.  I suppose it's possible the same individual in Norman could have been tU connnected, but it's highly doubtfull.  He was moving from corner to corner and left quickly after he sold out and none of the hats were stitched with any licensing marks.  Since it was at a game against NT I am guessing is why he felt brave enough to do it?  Who knows.

    Rick

And since you wish you had though of it are you condoning illegal activity? That's unamerican.

  17. I wasn't able to listen or watch the game last night, but sometimes teams just play poorly. Look at the thrashing Kentucky (ranked in the top 10, I believe) took at the hands of Kansas (not ranked). I think JJ is a good coach and will have the team ready to play next time. This loss kind of sucks.
