  1. He has one more year at UNT and there is not a dog gone thing that anyone can do about it except to support the team by filling the stands next year.

Where do you get that? With recent extensions....he has I think, 4 years left on his contract. Not one.

    Read it and weep.

  2. Sweet, thanks for the info. He's got my vote.

The NFC Championship game starts late on Sunday (5 or so). So, if anyone wants to see 60 Minutes (and they want to watch that game).....I'm giving you all a "heads up" to either have a videotape or Tivo ready for 60 Minutes.

Or I guess, you could tune in to the start of 60 Minutes, see what order the segments are in, and turn over to 60 Minutes at the appropriate time.

    Kinky in '06!

  3. Why is everyone so worried about the Pizza Man taking the job at UL-La. As far as my accounting goes he is still about $90 million short on his promise. And that’s if you give him credit for the Mattress Mac Million and the money donated for the tennis center.

I seem to recall when he was hired. He claimed (lied about) raising $95 million in 5 years. He has done a nice job getting us a foundation for a Women’s soccer program (back2back SBC titles and tourney appearances), established a Women’s Softball program and set it back 5 years with hiring of the wrong coach to start the program. The Women’s track program seems to be in a little better shape than when he got here, but the Men are still in the same spot. He finally hired a Women’s golf coach, under threats of a Title lawsuit. The Volleyball team is still in the bottom of one of the most average conferences in College volleyball.

He allows the Bell-Cow program’s (football) coach to continually bad-mouth fans and allows his employees (Ramon Flannigan & George Dunham) to physically confront fans without any repercussions. He doesn’t force Darrell Dickey to run a tight ship, which results in embarrassing  failures for the program. (i.e. the problems with the Cougar McBride and the others 4 or 5 years ago. The problems Jeremy Pearl had with the law before the N.O. Bowl. The bar fight after the Air Force game. Refusing to discipline players for on-the-field activities.) It is a well-known fact that RV and DD do not get along and are not on good terms. Rick takes credit for the four Football Conference titles and turning the Football program around and Dickey does not like it.

He allows the Women’s basketball team to continue to stew in its own mediocrity under a coach who has been at NT 12 years longer than she should have been. The Men’s basketball team is getting turned around. But where were the promotions for the SBC Conference Tournament last year. The attendance at the Tournament was embarrassing and it has been even worse this season. There is a lack of organization in the NT athletic department and it starts at the top with Rick V.

I am still looking for something that has so many on this board ready to proclaim him GOD of all Athletic Directors. He has done a decent job, but he needs to move on and let somebody who really wants this University to succeed at being a major player in College Athletics take over.

We need somebody who can deliver on the NEW football stadium, not just make impressive videos that make it look good.

We need a fundraiser that will not stop until everyone that has ever attended NT is a member of the Mean Green Club.

This university deserves a great athletic department with a great leader and the Pizza Man is not that leader.

I agree with Green Bat's great post.

  4. The Associated Press named Brian Waters to their All-Pro team. He is on the 1st Team, along with Steve Hutcheson (Seattle) and Alan Faneca (Pittsburgh).

That's great. I know Brian has been to a Pro Bowl.....has he been named All Pro before? And if so, has he ever been All-Pro 1st Team?

Mean Joe, Cedric Hardman, Spider Lockhart, Ray Renfro, others........I'd have to say that Brian is making a good case that he is one of our greatest pro players ever (from North Texas).

    Congrats to Brian.

  5. I can't do links.....but it's available at www.sunbeltsports.org, if someone would link it.

    Some wacko questions, as usual.

A complaint from a dad who is pissed because his kid (Guillory at ULM) wasn't named Defensive Player of the Year.

But the funniest thing......at the bottom, they respond to questions about officiating at the Alamo Bowl. "due to the large volume of questions" (or something like that).

  6. SUMG-

I appreciate you taking up for Cooley.  However, sounds as though there is a "lynch mob" forming to start bashing JJ.

In my opionion JJ is turning the team around.  In your, obvious, opionion he is not and you are getting the posse ready.

You are right with me supporting DD and to date am the only one to set down parameters to keep him.  These are:  win 2 OOC games, run the belt and beat the #4 CUSA team in the NO Bowl.  I have not seen any of yours!!

I want to remind you again what conference UNT is in: SUN BELT

You can "blow" all you want on how you think how easy it is to break the top 25 in BB and it may be in some other conference but UNT is a mid major in the SUN BELT!!!!  Can it be done??  I think if anyone can do it JJ can.  However, you want to play musical coaches, again.

JJ, like Jankovich before, is doing the best he can with the resources he has and in the conference we are in.  Right now 8-5 looks pretty darn good.  We could have easily been 11-2 except for the close calls we had against A&M, Houston and New Orleans.  These were extremely close games and not like the "BLOW OUTS" that you want to try to compare JJ and his team with DD and his OOC loses of over 50 points.  There is no comparison.

If you want to line up behind Cooley because he has BB knowledge then that is your line in the sand.  It would be more prudent for you to start supporting JJ and the team and realize what our "REAL" current situation is:  SUN BELT CONFERENCE, MID MAJOR, NO CURRENT OPENINGS AVAILABLE IN WAC, CUSA, BIG 12 ETC.

I do not mind supporting any coach that I think is doing the best he/she is doing under the situation that is placed upon them by this university.  Yep, I supported DD and am still glad that I did.  However, it is my opionion that I believe that DD has reached the apex of his college coaching career.  I DO NOT think that of JJ.  Look at the talent base of players he has.  He has more depth, #3 in the nation in steals, this team has a little more intensity and plays like it.  I see a lot of positive aspects of this years team than other teams.  JJ has to fight the stigma of playing in the SBC, the Dante's Inferno, of D-1 college sports.

SUMG, if you want to start pursuading your minions to start "bashing" JJ then that is your business.

Euless......where do you come up with some of this stuff? When on this thread has anyone said that it's easy to be in the top 25 in basketball. Where? Several of us did say, that with the facility and our location, we should have a top 75 program.

    No one said "Top 25."

    So quit making stuff up.

Anyway, I hope we do finish out the year successfully. I'm just saying that in my mind, we haven't advanced the program this year.....YET. Maybe we will.

    GMG!

  7. What do I want to see out of our basketball program?

    1. Q. Continual progress (i.e. wins)

    A. I think he's continually increased his wins. I'm too lazy today to look it up, but I think so.

Not exactly. His win totals are:

    Year 1: 15

    Year 2: 7

    Year 3: 13

    Year 4: 14

    Year 5: 8 and counting

Hey I went to UNT, so I'm obviously no genius. But, if those yearly win totals were on some kind of chart......they wouldn't be going continually UP.

  8. Euless Eagle.....Cooley knows more about basketball than you ever will.

You're as gung ho about JJ now.....as you used to be about Dickey.

Hate to burst your bubble (and I know facts don't matter to you, just nonsensical hyperbole).....but we are 8-5 this year, after 13 games.

Want to guess what our record after 13 games last year was?

    8-5.

And last year, we had only beaten one lower Division team to get to those 8 wins.....this year we have beaten three.

JJ better win some games early in conference play or he is screwed....because 6 of our last 7 conference games are on the road.

Anyway, you can keep pumping it out all you want....so far this year's team hasn't proven anything. It's not proven that it's any better than past JJ coached teams. Maybe they will....but so far they haven't.

Anyway, once again.......Cooley is "the man" when it comes to b-ball knowledge around here.

You on the other hand, think squatting on the sideline, somehow conveys controlling a game.

    Wow.

  9. I'm with you, Cooley. We should have a top 75 program. It shouldn't be that hard to get one going, when you consider our location and facility (like you pointed out).

Correct me if I'm wrong....but I don't think JJ has ever signed a kid straight out of a Dallas ISD school.

It's unfathomable to me, how our football and basketball programs, can no longer recruit Dallas ISD schools. Football didn't sign anyone from any of those schools last year either.

Think about this....how the Hell can the UNT basketball program, not have a single player from a Dallas ISD school but we will next year have two from Howe????

    That's part of our problem.

Also, I think he goes to the same well, too often. We've signed three guys in two years from Eastern Oklahoma JC, two from Howe, and two from Mineral Area CC.

Anyway....expect JJ to be back in 2006-2007. From what I understand, all he has to do is win 14 games, and he's back next year.

Some standards of excellence around here, huh?

  10. Wow. Our gals ended ULL's 22-game home winning streak. From meangreensports.com:

LAFAYETTE, La. (1/7/06) – In dominating fashion the North Texas women’s basketball team ended the nations’s fifth longest home winning streak with a 70-47 rout of Louisiana-Lafayette at the Earl K. Long Gym. The win is the fifth straight for North Texas (12-2, 2-0) and ends the Ragin Cajun’s 22-game home winning streak.

“We knew about their streak and had heard a lot about it and that really motivated us,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “This team really went out and answered the challenge”.

North Texas took command of the game early with a 12-4 run capped off by freshman Sanetra Jackson’s 3-pointer to make it 16-9 with 11:41 left in the first half. The Mean Green kept the Cajuns’ offense at bay in the first half and closed with a 14-2 run to take a 32-15 lead into the break.

North Texas shot 43 percent in the first half and held Louisiana-Lafayette (11-3, 1-1) to 22 percent shooting in the first half as the Cajuns were only 1-14 to close the half from the floor.

North Texas didn’t let up in the second half pushing their lead to 43-21 with 15:27 left in the game. The Mean Green lead got to as many as 25 points in the second half as the Ragin Cajun’s never threatened North Texas.

“We really played a 40 minute game and took control of this game early,” said Slinker. “There are a very explosive team and we never let them get a change to get back in the game and I was very pleased with that”.

Junior Mia Ajekwu led North Texas with 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. North Texas outscored the Ragin Cajun bench 31-0 for the game.

The Mean Green owned the boards with a 49-34 rebounding edge in the game keyed by 12 from freshman Amber Jackson. Yolanda Jones led the Cajuns with 20 points and 11 rebounds, but 18 of her 20 points came in the second half with the game decided.

The win gives the Mean Green its 11th win in its past 12 games and the second 2-0 start to begin Sun Belt Conference play since joining the league. North Texas has its best record in school history after 14 games and is off to their best start in school history on the road at 4-1.

The Mean Green return home for two straight beginning on January 12 against the Denver Pioneers.

  11. For those who didn't listen to it.....we only lead once in the game....69-68. UNO took the lead at the start of the game, and didn't relinquish it, at all, until very late. They were up by as much as 14. Our only lead was 1.

They outrebounded us, had more assists and more steals.

JJ has never started conference play 2-0. (even though he has been 1-0, four out of his five years at UNT).

And people wonder why we're lucky to get 1500 to a game any more.

  12. IRVING, Texas (AP)- Bill Parcells is coming back for another season with the Dallas Cowboys. Maybe even two. The team announced Friday that Parcells agreed to a new contract through the 2007 season.

"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue what we have started here," Parcells said in a news release. "The Cowboys organization has been the fairest of fair to me, and hopefully I can repay them with an improved performance."

Parcells, 64, had a year left on the four-year, $17 million contract he signed in January 2003. However, he left his three previous coaching jobs mid-contract and there was speculation he might do it again.

The question diminished as this week went on and Parcells continued showing up at his office every day. The announcement ends any doubt and helps turn attention to what the club will do to continue a turnaround that saw them go 9-7 after being 6-10 the previous year.

"This is about continuity and building upon the pieces we have in place as an organization and as a football team," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We aren't where we want to be at this point, but we're definitely moving in the right direction and feel very good about the future."

The Cowboys are 25-24 under Parcells, counting the postseason. Over his 18-year career, he's 163-123-1, good for ninth on the career win list, with two Super Bowl wins.

In three years with the Cowboys, Parcells has enhanced his reputation as a rebuilder, but he still has plenty to accomplish - starting with winning a playoff game.

Terms of Parcells' new contract were not immediately available. A team spokesman said Jones would have no further comment. Parcells, who rarely speaks to reporters in the offseason, also was unavailable. His agent, Jimmy Sexton, did not immediately return a phone call to The Associated Press.

Despite having added a year to Parcells' existing deal - and probably giving him a raise, too - Jones could end up in the same will-he-stay-or-will-he-go dilemma after the upcoming season.

Coaches usually work with an extra season on their contracts, partly as leverage with players who might view them as headed out. So even with the extension, Jones can only count on getting 2006 out of Parcells.

"As I have said for the past three years, I am encouraged by Bill's enthusiasm and determination, and that hasn't changed in any way," Jones said. "From a personal perspective I have enjoyed every aspect of our working relationship, and I am optimistic about the organization's future."

The makeup of Parcells' staff remains in doubt. Sean Payton, the passing game coordinator and assistant head coach, is a candidate for the head coaching jobs in Green Bay and New Orleans, and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is up for the St. Louis job.

As for the roster, Dallas will have to decide about whether to keep several veterans who are due roster bonuses. The Cowboys likely will be on the hunt for several starters in free agency, and they have the 18th pick in the draft.

Parcells arrived in Dallas three years ago this week, taking over a club coming off three straight five-win seasons.

He won 10 games and made the playoffs right away, but lost to Carolina in a wild-card game. After the worst second season of any of his coaching stops, he rededicated himself for '05, restructuring the team more to his liking, and saw immediate results.

The Cowboys were 7-3 and first in the NFC East, then stumbled to a 2-4 finish. They were eliminated from the playoffs about an hour before their finale.

Afterward, Parcells said he needed time to decide whether to return. He's maintained that his health is fine, other than slipping from his workout regimen during the final month of the season. The first media report that he was considering retirement linked it to the November death of his younger brother, Don, after a long bout with cancer.

"Listen, the NFL season at best is a tiring process," Parcells said last week. "When you've been going every day since July 29, every single day, it's tiring for me. I don't know what it is for the other guys. When I see them on Sunday, they all look tired, too."

Parcells guided the New York Giants to Super Bowl titles after the 1986 and '90 seasons, then got the New England Patriots there in '96 and the New York Jets to the AFC championship in '98. He became the first coach to get four teams into the playoffs after making it with Dallas in 2003.

The future seems bright for the Cowboys.

Running back Julius Jones and tight end Jason Witten are building blocks on offense, and the defense - which Parcells switched to a 3-4 scheme last offseason - is loaded with talented young players: safety Roy Williams, cornerback Terence Newman, linebacker DeMarcus Ware and linemen Marcus Spears and Chris Canty.

Parcells also has a core of players he relies on after having coached them on previous teams: quarterback Drew Bledsoe, receivers Keyshawn Johnson and Terry Glenn, defensive lineman Jason Ferguson and cornerback Aaron Glenn.

  13. Chuck was fired because his attitude started to cause players to not want to play for him.  There were several players (linebackers) that almost quit because of Chuck and those guys were starters.  I think one name was mentioned aboved!!!

Gee that's news to me. Chuck coached here for Corky, Matt Simon and during the early Dickey years. I never heard any complaints about him.

And also, bigdaddy....someone posted recently that you are one of our current assistants. If that's true....should you really be trashing a former assistant? Especially since that former assistant (Mills) also happens to be a UNT alum.

Too bad we don't still have Chuck.....and many more like him.

  14. A friend and fellow poster, reminded me the other day that Chuck Mills (former LB coach) was our Recruiting Coordinator back in 2000, when we signed that unbelievably good recruiting class. (the one with 6-7 State 100s in it).

If that is correct.....why was he let go? He was let go, wasn't he? Anyone know?

I always felt Chuck was a good LB coach, as well. And if he was the Recruiting Coordinator back in 2000.....why was he let go?

    Just curious.

  15. Reginald Lewis was one of Hayden's players......and he was drafted in the 3rd round by Tampa Bay. (I think in '79).

Also, you just mention drafted players, but J.T. Smith was one of Hayden's players. I think he was an undrafted free agent, but he played in the NFL several years (Cardinals and Chiefs, as I recall).

Not sure if the great Burks Washington (LB from '75-'78), got a chance with the pros or not. (I know he wasn't drafted; maybe he signed somewhere as an undrafted FA). But, Burks sure seemed like the type who would have been a great pro LB (to me anyway).

  16. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Doug Flutie added another oddity to his football resume on Sunday when he converted a drop kick in the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' game against the Miami Dolphins.

It was the league's first drop kick since the 1941 NFL championship game, according to the web site for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With starting quarterback Tom Brady sitting out most of the season-ending game, backup Matt Cassel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Dwight to cut Miami's lead to 25-19 with 6:10 left in the game. Flutie, who was listed as the No. 3 QB, came in for the extra point and lined up at quarterback.

After a timeout, Flutie took the snap, dropped the ball and kicked it off a short hop through the uprights for one point. He ran off the field and embraced coach Bill Belichick.

According to the Hall of Fame site, Chicago's Ray "Scooter" McLean converted the last drop kick in the Bears' 37-9 victory over the New York Giants on Dec. 21, 1941.

  17. The thing about Dickey that I don't get:

The more the guy has to work with.....the less he produces (in recruiting).

That aforementioned great 2000 recruiting class (the one with the 6-7 State 100s in it) came:

    1) before he had RV as the AD.

    2) way before any Athletic Center.

    3) We were in a league where the bowl was in Boise.

    4) We'd had no success yet (of any kind) in the Dickey era. We were coming off 3-8 and 2-9 seasons. So we definitely weren't coming off seasons of bowl appearances.

    5) In 2000......had we ever been on national TV? I don't think so. We'd been on regional TV....but not national TV.

So even though he has that brand spankin' new Athletic Center, that we absolutely had to have.....expect this year's class to be as "so-so" as his last 4. Oh, it will be touted as the "greatest class ever"......but trust me it won't be.

  18. Oh wow, the Cheerleader coach quit. Gee, what are we gonna do?

Of course, it's a well known fact that the UNT Cheerleader Coach job is a "pressure cooker", what with trying to live up to that national championship of several years ago.

Anyway, thanks for totally ruining my day. Now, I've had to rearrange my "Things that I'm worried about" list:

    Here's the current list:

    1) UNT is without a cheerleader coach

    2) Terrorism

    3) The War in Iraq

    4) Droughts and wildfires in Texas

    5) Bird flu

    6) That restraining order that keeps me out of Chuck E. Cheese
