  1. Unfortunately, many UNT "fencesitter" fans will wait to see where all of this takes us, athletically speaking. They will wait for the results of new Coach McCarney and his "soon to be" newly created staff. We have probably lost so many fans over the past 15 years that it will take several years of real success to get them financially involved. It will happen; we have to be patient.

Are there fence sitter fans on this board? I wouldn't think so. Also, have we really lost that many fans in 15 years. It seems to me we have more fans now than ever. How else do you explain relatively good attendance during the worst run in history?

And I'm like you, I was already giving more than was comfortable. I guess I just now feel like it's worth it, which makes me want to figure out a way to do more. Which I didn't think 1 month ago.

  2. I really cannot believe all of the news of experienced coaches making decent money at my alma mater. For so long it always felt like donating to the school was a bad decision because the school didn't really care. The leadership, the financial commitment, the decisions that were made were always made with what seemed to be in the spirit of - well we have to do something so how can we do it as cheaply as possible but not make that too obvious.

Well, this last few weeks have proven that things are different. I mean even the stadium had me only so fired up. It was going to be great to have a beautiful venue to watch games, but if we still treated everything else like an obligation, then it would only take us so far.

For years I've read on here we were a sleeping giant. I always thought we weren't because I never expected the kind of change we've seen to happen. I know that's what a sleeping giant was, I just didn't get caught up in it. Now it is apparent that if I support the program, I will be rewarded with support from the school. It's not throwing my money away.

I've always given to the school cause I'm loyal, and that's just the way I am. My question to all of you is, now that things have changed, how will that affect your involvement financial or otherwise? I'm not trying to call people out or anything just wondering, now that you can't really blame your lack of giving on the school, what do you plan to do?

  3. First we hire Dodge, which was a overreaction to the jerk Darrel Dickey. Now we hire McCarney, which is an overreaction to the "no head coach experience" Dodge hire.

Like all of us our strengths can also be our weakness, Rick's strength (his emotion and wanting to please the supporters) is also his Achilles heal. I hope this works out, because Chico is for real.

Please don't read this as a negative for Rick. He's a great man and I'm glad to have him as the AD.

  4. It seems to my like folks think Canales has excitement for the job, is a nice guy, cares about the Mean Green, etc. Just like Dodge. He's a good guy. So far, he's won a game against WKU and lost a close one. Just like Dodge.

Not exactly just like Dodge. With Dodge, whenever we played good teams we got slaughtered. We never came close to hanging with Troy.

  5. is he known enough to non attached fans to make them want to come buy tickets? not yet

Jeez, who cares. I swear some of you have such self-respect issues that you will only be happy if some "name" coach comes in here so you'll feel like a big shot when your d-bag friend at work hears about it. That was the reason so many liked Dodge to begin with. I want a coach who wins because it makes my supporting the team fun. I could care less if anyone one else has heard about him so I can feel good about myself at work. I don't need approval from d-bags.

  6. If you haven't seen the Locker room video from the WKU game on meangreensports.com, watch it. This team has rallied around Coach Chico....and i think this video proves it. I know everyone wants a big name, me included, but this video really made me pumped at the Idea of Chico leading this team in the Future, great game, great coaching, and most importantly, GREAT PASSION.

    Go Mean Green!

Like I said before, I don't want a big name, I just want us to win. And what Canales has done with this team even before he became he interim is amazing. He deserves the shot!

  7. I see people praising Canales and I just shake my head and wonder why. What has he done here? What has he done here that rates a look-see for the head coaching job? To be fair, he really hasn't had that much time and has had to deal with a lot of injuries, but I just don't understand the blind adulation for a guy that has accomplished nothing as a UNT assistant.

This is pretty easy. We have the most diverse and unpredictable offense since sometime in the 90's? And he has constantly adjusted to losing a starting quarterback. I don't care what anyone says, when you are down to a 4th QB and still in a game, you are a miracle worker. Canales deserves a shot if he wants it.

That's one of the reason I like Leavitt, because I hope he will keep Canales. I expect an overreaction from the athletic director to his gamble by hiring someoe who has been a head coach before no matter what. So if that is the case, Leavitt and hopefully keeping Canales are a good bet.

And to those saying we have to have a name in here to convince people to get on with it, who are you talking about? UNT alums, displaced UT fans, Nascar guy, Denton resident? For most all of them the only thing that would get them to games would be if we were in the Big 12. We have a base of fans now. We still get 15-20K at games and we haven't won in years.

Two things are going to bring people, that new stadium, I've heard it from people who I never thought would go to games, and winning. We just need a coach that can win.

It seems that before TheTastyGreek posted a negative opinion about Bower a few weeks ago, everybody was high on Bower. All of a sudden, he is a terrible hire, to the degree that some are saying they would quit following/supporting North Texas football if he were hired. But Tasty's post did nothing to indicate that he was a bad coach, or a morally inferior person. He did a good job pointing out Bower's flaws, but they don't necessarily make him any less hireable (is that a word?) than Leach, Leavitt, or Mangino with their transgressions. The bad points about Bower include:

Not true, there were a few others including me. I'd rather have let Dodge keep trying to figure it out, than have Bower. What I'd really like is a Harbaugh type hire from the last go around. Someone who just has it. But those are hard to find. I think there are blemishes on all of these retreads. I'd prefer Franchione, Leach or Leavitt if we are going to go that route. Leach would be successful for the same reason Bobby Knight was. Franchione as Tasty pointed out, has proven he can win. Leavitt built a team from nowhere. While impressive, I think it's easier to build from nothing that to overcome apathy. There are two ways to overcome apathy you need even more buzz (like Leach) or you need to turn it around fast and exceed expectations (like Harbaugh at Stanford).

Hopefully there is a Harbaugh out there and RV and the Prez can recognize it.

  9. Did Leavitt ever get accused of any wrongdoing other than the locker room incident? Even if this drags out in the courts for years, did USF ever come up with anything other than the locker room incident as cause for firing him?

Because if that's all that would be discussed in court, I don't care if the lawsuit drags on during his tenure at North Texas.

For crying out loud, the guy who built Troy was busted ON TAPE bribing an Auburn football player and telling him to keep quiet about it. Somehow, he's managed to move past it and turn their program into a success.

I don't know if Leavitt did what USF says/thinks he did or not. If I had to guess, he probably did. Either way, I don't care. As far as "scandal" goes, this is about the most minor knock on a viable coach I can think of. We're not talking about Dave Bliss here. We're not even talking about Bobby Knight. The guy may have gotten physical with a kid in the middle of a game. In the heat of the moment, he may have let his judgment fly out the window and done something stupid.

We've got a shot at a guy who had a BCS conference team ranked LAST YEAR. And the year before that. And the year before that.

And it's not a guy who is used to having all the BCS resources and tools at his disposal. He built the place from nothing. From literally nothing.

I've been heavy for Franchione, and I'd still love to have him. But if Leavitt is after us, then LOCK THAT GUY DOWN.

    BEST. POST. EVER!

  10. I think a big reason that many of us consider Leavitt (aside from what he did at SF) is his working relationship with coach Canales, and the assumption that if he came here, coach Canales would also stick around.

I really hope this doesn't happen, but: What if coach Canales loses the team over the next few weeks? Would we really want him to stick around? More importantly, would the players want him around anymore?

I think if coach Canales can get the team playing well, then Leavitt would move up to a clear-cut #1 for me assuming he would keep Canales as his OC. If the team loses their will to win under Canales, then give me the Franchione father-son duo over the Leavitt-Canales duo.

By play well do you mean win? Because there aren't many wins left on the schedule with the injuries we've had.

  11. Leavitt is the answer. However, I agree with what harry said on another thread. The university needs to step up and pay. If the university finally does this, then things at UNT will be forever changed.

It's easy to take shots at our alumni for not giving, but really why should we. When the university has never shown that it cares why should we. I don't know about you but I work hard for my money and NT is my sole outlet for giving back in the form of financial support. But if the university doesn't care, it would be like me giving to someone who may just throw my money away. I know countless guys who follow what's going on but don't care because it doesn't seem like the university is serious. I think this is a bigger hurdle to clear than the conference we are in. The opportunity is there to get a do over with the new stadium, put some money behind a cauch and you make alums start thinking, hmm maybe they are serious and I should give it a second chance. Because even with the improvement in season tickets and attendance it's a slow grow. We need a kick start and this would be it.

I actually hope that when we do hire Leavitt or whomever that the contract comes out and people go whoa. It would do more than the stadium to create a change in culture.
