  1. Joining the area representatives on the field was Kellers Cody Nelson, who signed with North Texas. Nelson saw significant time at left tackle for the East Texas team. Nelson was one of six Football Bowl Subdivision athletes to participate in the exhibition game. Notable Oil Bowl alumni include current Philadelphia Eagles running back Felix Jones, current Baylor head coach Art Briles and Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Largent. It was a big part of my mindset for this game, for me to come out and play the best I can, knowing the history behind this and knowing how big of a big deal this is, Davis said. 2. Seems like our line signee Cody Nelson was a little under the radar but might be a surprise. I saw him at a scrimmage and was impressed with his frame. Will be interesting to see how he fares against a lot of competition in the Fall. Dave Campbell's said:
  3. I spent some time working the phones today to see if anything was going to move on the recruiting front. UNT could use some good news right now (the “Mean Green Morale collapse watch” is still on after a brutal few weeks). I did come up with some promising tidbits from a few recruits, but UNT did not land a commitment today after five players visited campus over the weekend. Louisiana DB Jermaine Antoine, maybe the best recruit on UNT’s board; Louisiana DE Claude George and South Garland DT Charles Walker joined UNT commits WR Turner Smiley and Keller OL Cody Nelson in UNT’s visit group. Walker is a new name at a position of need and is the closest of the three non-committed players to going with UNT. He is has good size at 6-4, 280, and also has an offer from Texas State. I am going to try to run him down tomorrow. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/12/sunday-night-recruiting-roundup.html/
  4. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/06/keller-ol-commits-to-unt.html/ " Cody Nelson, an offensive lineman from Keller, committed to UNT on Monday. UNT recruited Nelson, 6-5, 270 pounds, as a tackle. “I love the coaches and it’s close to home,” Nelson said late Tuesday. UNT made Nelson a priority in recruiting and offered him a scholarship early. Nelson said that Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech told him that there was a possibility that he would be offered a scholarship if he attended their summer camps. Nelson said that being a higher priority for UNT made the difference."
  5. Cody Nelson felt like he was at the top of North Texas’ wish list when it came to offensive line prospects this summer. That made a big impression on the Keller tackle, who orally committed to UNT late Monday. Nelson had just one offer, from UNT, but said he was told by coaches at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech that he could receive offers from them if he attended their summer camps. Nelson decided to go with the team that wanted him most. “The coaches at North Texas followed me the whole time and showed that they really wanted me,” Nelson said. “I wasn’t a backup plan in case someone else didn’t commit. I felt like I was a Plan B guy with some of the other schools.” Nelson (6-5, 270 pounds) played both right and left tackle for Keller. UNT safeties coach Noah Joseph recruited Nelson, who is projected to remain at tackle. Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day recruits in the class of 2013 can sign national letters of intent is Feb. 6. Kevin Atkinson, the new head coach at Denton, coached Nelson at Keller before taking over the Broncos’ program early this year. He has known Nelson since he was playing in the Keller youth leagues and says he believes he will develop into a solid college lineman.
