  1. South Florida: Willie Taggart looks to be cleaning house. Taggart, who just completed his second season at USF, has let offensive coordinator Paul Wulff, defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and assistant head coach / defensive backs Ron Cooper go. Josh Newberg first reported the news and sources tell us the same. Football Scoop Link Ron Cooper info Ron Cooper Bio Paul Wulff Bio Paul Wulff Bio 2 from USF Chuck Bresnahan from USF
  2. Today was a fruitful one when it comes to UNT football info and tidbits. If you’ve been following along, UNT officials acknowledged that Portland State, an FCS program, will visit Apogee Stadium on Oct. 10 next season. What I didn’t get to on the blog was the terms of the contract. UNT will pay $425,000 to bring in PSU. I also got a chance to sit down with Dan McCarney for a few minutes for the end of the season “State of the Green” evaluation. Here were the key news items: – Everyone who was on UNT’s staff this season and is expected to return (everyone outside of retiring defensive coordinator John Skladany) is still around. McCarney is in the evaluation process of what went on this season and how the Mean Green can improve next year. 3. DENTON Dan McCarney thought back Monday morning on the feelings around North Texas a year ago, as the Mean Green began preparing for their first bowl appearance in nine years. The sense of excitement back then offered a stark contrast to what UNTs coach felt two days after the Mean Green wrapped up a disappointing 4-8 follow-up campaign with a loss to UT-San Antonio. The Mean Green beat rival SMU early in the season, but lost to their three Texas rivals in Conference USA, including the Roadrunners. UTSA edged UNT 34-27 on Saturday, the final blow in a tough year that also included losses to Rice and UTEP. 4. Dan McCarney made what I thought was a pretty telling comment about the situation at North Texas earlier today. I mentioned it in my press conference notes, but this deserves its own post and its own discussion because I think McCarney really provides some good insight here This isnt the easiest place in the world to recruit to. This isnt the easiest place in the world when you have a track record and a lot of years of losing. Just because you put up some cement and some bigger stands, that doesnt make it easy." 5. First-year FAU coach Charlie Partridge has worked under some well-respected head coaches including Bret Bielema at both Wisconsin and Arkansas and former Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt at Pitt. But there would seem to be no one he holds in higher regard than the man he’ll face this week, North Texas coach Dan McCarney. “Coach McCarney is someone I revere,” Partridge said this week as he prepared to take the Owls to Denton, Texas Saturday for a 7 p.m. start. “I can’t say enough how much he means to me. His energy, his passion, what he demanded out of me at a young age in a large part shaped what I have become.” Read more: http://faufocus.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2014/11/05/charlie-partridge-set-to-face-someone-i-revere/
  6. Most coaches have more than a few mentors who helped them move along in their careers, whether it was through advice or a chance to move to a higher-level job. Dan McCarney’s mentors included Hayden Fry and Barry Alvarez, a pair of college football legends who helped North Texas’ coach get to the other side of the equation and mentor a few young coaches, including Florida Atlantic coach Charlie Partridge. Partridge started out working McCarney’s football camps and eventually became a part of Iowa State’s staff. Several years and a few jobs later, McCarney and Partridge will face off for the first time as head coaches Saturday night when Partridge brings his Owls to Apogee Stadium to face the Mean Green. “Coach McCarney gave me my first big shot at Iowa State,” Partridge said this summer at Conference USA media day. “It’s surreal. I was just cutting my teeth at the Division I level when I worked for Dan.” Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20141105-unt-notebook-mccarney-protege-partridge-bringing-owls-to-apogee.ece
  7. Little has gone the way North Texas had hoped this football season. The Mean Green have been blown out more than once and blew an opportunity to get off to a quick start in Conference USA play. Coach Dan McCarney and his players were adamant this week that they still have a chance to rally and won’t back off in terms of their push for a second straight bowl berth, no matter how dire the circumstances appear. They certainly don’t appear particularly favorable heading into a game against Southern Mississippi on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. UNT (2-4) fell to 0-2 in C-USA play Saturday when UAB blew past the Mean Green 56-21. “I don’t sense anyone wanting to throw in the towel because we are not where we want to be,” McCarney said. “I would have loved to have won more games, but this season is not over. I don’t sense any of that. I sense a real dedication from all of our guys — coaches and players alike — to getting back to doing some really positive things.” Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20141014-notebook-unt-not-ready-to-throw-in-the-towel.ece
  8. A couple of people have asked me over the last few days about the chances of UNT turning to the Carthage wide receiver of Tee Goree and OKeeron Rutherford in an effort to give its offense some additional threats. I asked that question in todays press conference. - See more at: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/10/mccarney-unt-wont-pull-redshirts-off-east-texas-wrs.html/#sthash.klJ2LS7K.dpuf
  9. UNT head coach Dan McCarney held his weekly press conference this afternoon. The Mean Green were off last week and will return to action in a key game at Indiana. UNT is 2-2 with its two wins coming against 0-4 SMU and 0-5 Nicholls State. UNT sees this game as a chance to prove itself and post what would be an attention-grabbing win over a Big 10 opponent. Indiana upset Missouri earlier this year. The Hoosiers feature Tevinn Coleman, who leads the nation with an average of 172.8 rushing yards a game. 10. Fast forward to 2014, and the school is sporting one of the premier college football stadiums in the country with Apogee Stadium. But the construction of Apogee and the addition of many amenities, most recently including the sale of beer, is about more than just adapting to a changing collegiate landscape. Villarreal is aiming to provide the ultimate fan experience for anyone who comes to a Mean Green football game, regardless of their affiliation with the university. The addition of beer sales is one of many steps the university is taking to successfully compete with other local sporting venues. “We work in a market where you’ve got the Cowboys, you’ve got the Mavericks, you’ve got the Stars, you’ve got the Rough Riders,” Villarreal said. “So when you’re looking at how you’re going to spend your discretionary dollars, even going to a Rangers game, you can take your son and daughter, and you have a hot dog and beer while they have a Coke. Here, you can have that full entertainment experience.” Read more: http://ntdaily.com/apogee-striving-for-ultimate-fan-experience/

  12. The Iowa State football community is in mourning yet again. Former Cyclones running back Hiawatha Rutland was found dead in Lake Erie near the vicinity of Whiskey Island on Monday, according to a release from the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Medical Examiner. Rutland was 33. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Rutland jumped from a private boat to swim ashore with his girlfriend. The paper reports that according to authorities, Rutland began to flounder about 90 feet from land. Rutland's sudden death is another in a long list of tragedies for the Iowa State football family. In 2003, former running back Ennis Haywood died after ingesting ethanol and two drugs. In 2006, former quarterback Cris Love lost his bout with cancer. In 2008, fans mourned the deaths of former running back Stevie Hicks and linebacker Justin Eilers. Earlier this year, former defensive end Jason Berryman was found shot and killed. With Haywood, Hicks, and now Rutland's deaths, Iowa State's leading rushers from 2000-2006 have all passed away. Rutland rushed for a team-high 614 yards in 2002. 13. Pretty interesting list that looks at D-I coaches and where/what position they played college ball at... they claim no correlation between being a good player in college to being a good coach...Mac was listed as #42. 42. Dan McCarney, North Texas -- McCarney was a linebacker at Iowa from 1972-74, a period when the Hawkeyes went a dismal 6-26-1 under coaches Frank Lauterbur and Bob Commings. McCarney was a captain on the 1974 team that upset No. 12-ranked UCLA early in the season, however. 14. Texas The Longhorns start the Charlie Strong Era by playing host to North Texas, a team that went 9-4 and won its bowl game. Strong and Mean Green coach Dan McCarney, who began his head coaching career at Iowa State, were on the staff at Florida when the Gators beat Oklahoma for the 2008 national championship. "From getting to know coach McCarney when we were together at Florida, I know his team will be very physical and won't beat themselves," Strong said. "Watching their games from last season, they just found a way to win. They'll be well prepared and focused. What they did last season, winning nine games and a bowl game, speaks volumes about the job he's doing there." Strong said that senior wide receiver Jaxon Shipley is "day-to-day" after suffering a hamstring injury just under two weeks ago. Other than Shipley, Texas has two receivers that have productive game experience – juniors Marcus Johnson and Daje' Johnson. read more: http://www.big12sports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=209616886&DB_OEM_ID=10410
  15. In other news and notes of the day … – Dan McCarney said that he has not settled on a quarterback and talked a little about where UNT stands. The battle is still down to Andrew McNulty and Josh Greer. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/08/unt-practice-notes-video-coming.html/
  16. For the Texas Longhorns, adapting to new head coach Charlie Strong‘s way of doing things could mean some temporary discomfort in 2014. And unfortunately for the Longhorns, there will be no easing into the college football season with the North Texas Mean Green coming to Austin in Week 1. Now, an upset is very unlikely. For all the challenges that might lay ahead for the Longhorns, they should easily best the Mean Green in the talent department. But that doesn’t mean that the Longhorns won’t be in for a game. The Mean Green are a team on the rise under head coach Dan McCarney. After winning eight games in the four years before he arrived, the Mean Green topped that number by a win in his first two season. Then, last year, the Mean Green won nine games. The season culminated in a 36-14 thrashing of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels in the Heart of Dallas Bowl that put North Texas on the national radar. 17. DENTON – North Texas is in unfamiliar territory heading into the fourth season of Dan McCarney’s tenure with the Mean Green. UNT spent the first two years of McCarney’s time in Denton trying to break out of a funk that had seen the Mean Green fail to post a winning season since 2004. A breakout 9-4 campaign that included a win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl has UNT aiming to maintain its momentum instead of trying to get its program on track. UNT has some key pieces in place among nine returning starters, including five on the offensive side of the ball, but must replace starting quarterback Derek Thompson and several other key players. How a few inexperienced backups and newcomers fill the voids left by those starters will go a long way toward determining if UNT can post a second straight winning season under McCarney, who is 74-104 in 15 seasons at UNT and Iowa State. 18. John Chelf made the right decision. Heading into his final year of Division I football this fall at North Texas, the City High graduate initially enrolled at Iowa as a walk-on. After two years in the Black and Gold, the wide receiver transferred to North Texas, also as a walk-on. The journey was long, and playing time was spare. Questions of doubt entered his mind. Until this spring. For his performance in winter and spring workouts, including the Mean Green's spring game April 12, Chelf earned a scholarship for his final semester of college. "Going into my fifth year, it was really do or die time," Chelf said this week. "I knew if I didn't play to my capabilities now, I would live the rest of my life knowing I didn't ever really perform how I was capable of. Being a senior and needing playmakers to step up, I focused this spring on making sure I put my best foot forward. The coaches responded well to it and gave me the scholarship." Despite opportunities to go to a Division II program, Chelf chose the path he had always wanted to take: playing for a Division I team. So after a senior year with 44 receptions, 1,054 yards and 15 touchdowns at City High, Chelf walked on at Iowa. Two other City alumni and his best friends, A.J. Derby and Ellis Jordan, also were on the Hawkeyes' roster. But after two years, Chelf sought a new, fresh chance in Denton, Tex. Another former Little Hawk and friend, quarterback Andrew McNulty, was on scholarship at North Texas and encouraged Chelf to possibly make the move. North Texas' coach, Dan McCarney — a City High grad, himself — was open to Chelf walking on at his program. 19. DENTON, TEXAS North Texas made a big breakthrough last season winning nine games, including a bowl on New Year's Day. Now comes a significant test for coach Dan McCarney and the Mean Green after their first winning record in nine seasons. They will be trying to do it again while replacing so many starters. "It's fun, it's exciting, it's nerve-wracking when you have so many guys that you don't know who your best guy's going to be, don't know who your starters are going to be," McCarney said. Four of the Mean Green's five returning offensive starters are linemen, three of them seniors with at least 34 career starts. That means all those new starters at the skill positions should be well-protected. Linebacker Derek Akunne and three players in the secondary account for the four returning defensive starters. "We've tried to build in our program, and embed it in the culture of this program, expect to win, believe you can win, regardless of who's back, who's not back, who started, who didn't start, who played, didn't play," McCarney said. "Regardless of all that stuff ... it's a culture of trust, it's a culture of leadership and it's a culture of expectations to win, and we have to build on that every day." North Texas is 18-19 in three seasons under McCarney, a drastic improvement from the 13-58 record the six years before that. Here are five things to watch this season for North Texas, which won seven of its last eight games in 2013, and capped its first Conference USA season winning the Heart of Dallas Bowl: Read more here: http://www.islandpacket.com/2014/08/14/3258213/lot-of-change-for-north-texas.html#storylink=cpy
  20. There has been a lot of talk about quarterback play over the last few weeks, and justifiably so in a season UNT must replace one of the better ones in recent Mean Green history. I bring it up because Dan McCarney talked a little bit about what he is looking for in a new starting quarterback this week during his annual State of the Green Two-A-Days Edition Address. “Our system, our identity and how we do it is to take care of the football on offense first. You have heard me say it before — a punt is a hell of a lot better than a turnover. We have a really good punter and good special teams. Don’t do something stupid because you think you are going to make a Dan Marino play or be Fran Tarkington. But along the way, we don’t need stiff back or there or a statue, a guy who can hand it off and make a couple of throws... 21. Question: There's some scuttlebutt that North Texas is going to beat Texas in their first game of the football season. What say you? Also, how disastrous would that be for Charlie Strong? Gosselin: I doubt that's the scuttlebutt in Austin. Maybe in Denton. I'll be attending and columnizing from that game, by the way. I think North Texas will be competitive with Texas. We saw how competitive the Mean Green could be a year ago at Georgia. But the schools from the power conferences tend to wear down the smaller schools with their depth in the second half of games. Texas has better players than North Texas, and the better players win most games. But Dan McCarney has it up and running at North Texas. Charlie Strong is trying to get the program up and running again at Texas. A loss to North Texas would rankle the Orangebloods to no end. But I'll go with the Longhorns in a closer-than-you'd-expect game. 22. DENTON — Dan McCarney was in the midst of a rousing summertime speech in front of a room full of pumped-up boosters when North Texas’ head coach acknowledged that even he didn’t know how tough the task of resurrecting a lifeless program would be. UNT had gone six seasons without winning more than three games in a year when McCarney arrived at UNT before the 2011 campaign. After three years and a lot of hard work, McCarney and the Mean Green finally broke through with a slump-busting 9-4 season that concluded with a win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That win changed the face of the program and left the Mean Green facing a new challenge this fall — proving last season was beginning of the program’s rise and not just a fluke. “The challenge ahead is this — are we a real program, which means no matter who you lose or who gets injured or who graduates can the next group come in and replace them?” McCarney wondered. “Or do we just disappear off the college football landscape for another 10 years?” Read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/unt-mean-green/20140807-mean-green-football-preview-unt-will-find-out-if-it-s-a-real-program.ece
  23. MURFREESBORO – MTSU coach Rick Stocktstill says he’s in no hurry to pick a starting quarterback. Some Conference USA coaches have similar patience. Some do not, opting to make a decision sooner rather than later. MTSU is among six C-USA teams that will pick a new starting quarterback this season. Sophomore Austin Grammer, redshirt freshman AJ Erdely and true freshman Brent Stockstill are vying for the Blue Raiders’ No. 1 job. Before preseason camps kicked off, a few C-USA coaches facing quarterback competitions weighed in on the different approaches. Some said you must name a starter to give stability to the other offensive players. Rick Stockstill said that notion is a little overblown. North Texas coach Dan McCarney has a four-man competition. He puts a value on his players identifying their starting quarterback as early as possible. “We’ve got to sift through this thing quickly because we go on national TV on Aug. 30 to play Texas, and we have to find who our best guy is,” McCarney said. “We have experience around those guys. The sooner you get them in there the better for chemistry, communication and getting on the same page.” Read more: http://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/college/mtsu/2014/08/06/c-usa-coaches-differ-picking-qb/13694843/
