  1. Most coaches have more than a few mentors who helped them move along in their careers, whether it was through advice or a chance to move to a higher-level job. Dan McCarney’s mentors included Hayden Fry and Barry Alvarez, a pair of college football legends who helped North Texas’ coach get to the other side of the equation and mentor a few young coaches, including Florida Atlantic coach Charlie Partridge. Partridge started out working McCarney’s football camps and eventually became a part of Iowa State’s staff. Several years and a few jobs later, McCarney and Partridge will face off for the first time as head coaches Saturday night when Partridge brings his Owls to Apogee Stadium to face the Mean Green. “Coach McCarney gave me my first big shot at Iowa State,” Partridge said this summer at Conference USA media day. “It’s surreal. 2. The FAU Owls may have to play a key game Saturday at North Texas without one of their best running backs. Coach Charlie Partridge said Monday that Greg Howell has a strained right hamstring that could force him to miss the must-win contest as FAU chases bowl eligibility. Howell, a true freshman, is listed as questionable. Partridge said his concern grew Sunday when the training staff told him Howell's hamstring was swollen. The plan this week is to ease Howell in practice and see how much his hamstring improves before Saturday. But until Howell can accelerate, and run at full speed, Partridge said the team's offensive game plan for North Texas does not include Howell. "We'll take a look at him every single day this week," Partridge said of Howell, who goes by the nickname Buddy. "It's not an easy one to come back from. I'm optimistic because Buddy is genetically gifted, so genetically gifted players recover faster." Read more: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/fau-owls/fl-fau-football-1104-20141103-story.html
