  1. The outsider is the way to go. Not hard to understand why these preliminary lists of potential Iowa State candidates feature the likes of Doug Meacham, Lincoln Riley and Kendal Briles. I get it. Finding a guy who understands the Big 12 landscape would be nice. But I just don’t think those rising OCs will say yes to this job. They know too much about the challenges of winning at Iowa State. Zigging when others zag is a good thing. Just ask Bill Snyder. He’s glad the rest of the Big 12 is gravitating toward a similar brand of offense. The defensive coordinators in this league spend seven or eight weeks a year figuring out how to stop that offense. You’re at an advantage when you do something they’re not used to seeing. K-State and Baylor got out of the Big 12 cellar because they found innovators. That’s what Iowa State needs right now. Easier said than done, I know, but here’s one guy Jamie Pollard should consider: Montana’s Bob Stitt. read more: http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/107013/take-two-which-direction-should-iowa-state-go-with-coaching-search
  2. I think somebody mentioned this a while back as well, but since Iowa State has an open date the day that we play Iowa, does anyone know if they plan to give us a sort of "home away from home field" advantage and come out to cheer with the Mean Green (and against the Hawkeyes)? Dan sure seems to still have plenty of fans back there, and the fact that we're 1) playing their big in-state rival 2) with their old head coach 3) on a day when they don't play sure seem like 3 great reasons to try to rally some extra support from the Cyclone faithful and get a nice, big, LOUD section helping to give us a little edge against the Hawkeyes, who will likely be heavily favored. Thoughts?
  3. The Iowa State football community is in mourning yet again. Former Cyclones running back Hiawatha Rutland was found dead in Lake Erie near the vicinity of Whiskey Island on Monday, according to a release from the Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Medical Examiner. Rutland was 33. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Rutland jumped from a private boat to swim ashore with his girlfriend. The paper reports that according to authorities, Rutland began to flounder about 90 feet from land. Rutland's sudden death is another in a long list of tragedies for the Iowa State football family. In 2003, former running back Ennis Haywood died after ingesting ethanol and two drugs. In 2006, former quarterback Cris Love lost his bout with cancer. In 2008, fans mourned the deaths of former running back Stevie Hicks and linebacker Justin Eilers. Earlier this year, former defensive end Jason Berryman was found shot and killed. With Haywood, Hicks, and now Rutland's deaths, Iowa State's leading rushers from 2000-2006 have all passed away. Rutland rushed for a team-high 614 yards in 2002. 4. A former Cyclone football star was found dead in his east Texas home, Wednesday. Police in Jefferson, Texas believe it was murder. KTBS reports that 28-year-old Jason Berryman’s body has been sent to Dallas for an autopsy. Berryman had a short but very troubled career at Iowa State. His former coach and teammates called Berryman, “one of the most gifted players they’ve ever seen.” There were two sides to Berryman. There was the Berryman who burst on the scene at Iowa State with 117 tackles as a true freshman. “A guy who could run down a receiver or a running back from behind that played the d-line position, the d-end,” said Todd Blythe, who played with Berryman from 2003-2005. That one was a legend on the practice field. “He’d outrun the defensive linemen,” his former coach, Dan McCarney said. ”I’d put him with the linebackers, he’d outrun the linebackers. I’d put him with the DB’s, he’d outrun the safeties. He was running with corners he was running with receivers…”But there was also the Berryman who spent 258 days in the Story County jail for theft and assault. “He said `man, I messed up, but when I get my chance, I’ll show people I’ve changed,” Curvey remembered. His skills too great to ignore, and Iowa State coach, Dan McCarney gave him a second chance. He recorded 5 ½ sacks in the 2005 Houston Bowl, his last game as a Cyclone. read more: http://whotv.com/2014/01/09/jason-berryman-talented-troubled-cyclone-remembered/
  5. 4. Mac Messed With MAC: Dan McCarney, former longtime coach at Iowa State, is writing his own heartwarming story at North Texas, which is 7-3 in McCarney’s third year there. But oh, how ESPN2 would have appreciated it had McCarney’s Mean Green not clipped Ball State in Denton on Sept. 14, 34-27. Had Ball State won that game, the Cardinals would go to Northern Illinois Wednesday with a 10-0 record to face the 9-0 Huskies. As it is, the game is for the upper hand in the MAC West. - See more at: http://thegazette.com/2013/11/11/hlist-week-11-you-can-win-at-football-anywhere/#sthash.sYz0FQ96.dpuf
  6. "Don't mean this to be anything but an observation that he's still a very solid coach. his team last night played tough as nails, solid defense, and just like i remember yours when he was in ames. so, wth was he let go?" "well, i understand the feelings here, i guess. but man, he's so bill snyderesque. and his teams play so hard and seem so well schooled. first, i'd watched him since isu days and was taken with how well they played. they may win the league and certainly will go bowling."
