  1. Well we throw the int and leave the defense in a tough spot. Still early. We knew Dajon would make some mistakes and he did. I still like his arm and hopefully we can get the running game going a bit.

  3. Here are five quick thoughts following UNT’s 49-24 loss to Indiana: 1. Dajon Williams still has some growing to do The redshirt freshman quarterback sent expectations way of of whack by accounting for five touchdowns in a 77-3 win over Nicholls State. He looked a whole lot more like a redshirt freshman against Indiana, throwing for 205 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. 4. DENTON Even now, as he stalks the sidelines of the practice fields in Indiana, Noah Joseph has a reminder of one of the highlights of his coaching career strapped to his wrist. Whenever the Hoosiers safeties coach checks the time, he glances at his Heart of Dallas Bowl watch, a memento each member of the Mean Green team received after a win over UNLV on New Years Day. That timepiece serves as a reminder of not only a program-changing win, but also of the players who made that victory possible. Joseph will face several of them Saturday when the Mean Green head to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Hoosiers. Joseph spent two seasons coaching UNTs safeties and was also the Mean Greens recruiting coordinator before joining Indianas staff in the same capacity after last season. 5. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana's Nate Sudfeld threw three touchdown passes and D'Angelo Roberts ran for two scores Saturday as the Hoosiers ran away from North Texas 49-24. Sudfeld was 23 of 29 for 230 yards. Tevin Coleman ran 17 times for 150 yards and one TD, producing his seventh straight 100-yard game and scoring in his 14th consecutive game — the longest active streaks in the Football Bowl Subdivision — to help Indiana (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten) rebound from last week's conference-opening loss to Maryland. North Texas (2-3, 0-1 Conference USA) struggled most of the day. It trailed 21-0 after one quarter and got back into the game in the second quarter. But the Mean Green never got close after allowing two quick third-quarter touchdowns, which made it 35-7. Dajon Williams was 18 of 24 for 205 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for North Texas. Indiana made a dramatic turnaround Saturday. 6. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In the 2011 matchup between North Texas and Indiana at Apogee Stadium, the Mean Green was the early aggressor in a 24-21 win. On Saturday, the Hoosiers flipped that script and spoiled NT's first trip into Big 10 territory. Mean Green miscues and an onside kick helped Indiana (3-2, 0-1 Big 10) take a 21-0 first-quarter that all but dashed North Texas' chances. Dajon Williams and North Texas (2-3, 0-1 C-USA) came alive in the second quarter, but the Hoosiers running game went to work and kept NT at bay for a 49-24 win in front of 40,457 at Memorial Stadium. IU Quarterback Nate Sudfeld completed 14 of his first 17 passes and led an efficient Hoosiers attack that accounted for 593 total yards, the most surrendered by the Mean Green this year. Tevin Coleman entered the game as the NCAA's leading rusher at 172.8 yards per game, and he led the Hoosiers ground game with 17 carries for 150 yards and one score. DeAngelo Roberts also reached the century mark with 102 yards and two touchdowns. Aside from freshman mistakes on his two interceptions, Williams showed why he was handed the reigns of the Mean Green offense. He was 18-of-34 for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for 40 yards on a team-high 13 carries. A quick passing attack led by Williams helped wake up the Mean Green offense in the second quarter. The redshirt freshman was 9-of-14 for 81 yards in the second frame, including a 20-yard touchdown strike to Carlos Harris to put North Texas on the scoreboard. Harris finished with a career-best 11 catches for 120 yards. A crafty third-quarter shovel pass from Williams to a wide open Antoinne Jimmerson went for 36 yards - NT's third longest pass play of the year - and set up a 20-yard Trevor Moore field goal. North Texas entered the day as one of seven teams in the country perfect in red-zone scoring, and the Mean Green kept that streak alive with a pair of fourth-quarter scores. Williams hooked up with a wide open Marcus Smith for a 20-yard touchdown with, and then he found Tanner Smith on a 1-yard screen pass on NT's next possession. North Texas has now scored on all 17 trips into the red zone this season. What They Said "We just didn't execute. We put ourselves in poor field position, and that was our own fault. They executed and we didn't. That was a really poor way to start the game. If my team didn't have great resolve and backbone today things really could have gotten out of hand." --North Texas head coach Dan McCarney on Indiana's quick 21-0 first-quarter lead. "Our kids fought back. I love the way we played especially in the red zone, but we got beat by a better team today. Indiana simply beat us, but we know we're a better team that this." --McCarney on how his team responded after allowing IU's first quarter haymaker. "I thought Dajon did some good things today. I think he learned a lot today. He made some silly mistakes, especially on that interception three plays into the game. We simply can't have that. That being said, he's our best option to win going forward and I think he's getting better every day." --McCarney on the play of his redshirt freshman quarterback Dajon Williams. Quick Hits • With the win Indiana evens the series with North Texas at 1-1. North Texas won the first matchup, 24-21, in 2011 at Apogee Stadium. The game was NT's first at a Big 10 opponent. • NT forced a fourth-quarter fumble, and now has at least one turnover in 21 straight games dating back to 2012. Only three teams in the country have longer streaks - ULM (30), Houston (27), 'Ole Miss (27). • NT kicker Trevor Moore hit his only attempt on the day, a 20-yarder, which keeps the freshman perfect on the year (6-of-6). • NT quarterback Dajon Williams made just his second career start, and had completed 28 passes without an interception prior to today. • The Mean Green defense allowed a touchdown on Indiana's first offensive possession of the game. It was the first time this season that North Texas has allowed a touchdown on the opponents initial possession of the game. • The North Texas defense had only allowed one touchdown in the first quarter this year, but allowed three Hoosier touchdowns in the first quarter today. • Defensive back James Jones and linebacker Derek Akunne both racked up career highs in tackles. Jones had 10 tackles on the afternoon, while Akunne led North Texas with 14 stops. • After Mean Green had just 23 yards of total offense in the first quarter, it picked it up in the second quarter with 123 yards. NT finished with 348 yards on the day. • Indiana running back Tevin Coleman broke a 74-yard run in the third quarter, which is the longest rush against the Mean Green defense this season. • Carlos Harris set a new career high with 11 catches. He piled up 120 and a touchdown on the day. Up Next North Texas returns to C-USA play with a road trip to UAB in Birmingham, Ala. 8. I've scoured the various sites and it's official, no one other than our fans think we can win this game. Have we ever beaten a Big 10 team on the road? Makes me really excited to watch it. Can't remember getting this juiced up about a roadie. I think the Dajon factor adds to the excitement.
  9. Stuart Jackson North Texas 34, Indiana 24: One week after a poor performance by its offense, Indiana faces a North Texas defense ranked 17th in the nation in total defense. This could be the a chance for Nate Sudfeld to finally bounce back and have a vintage game, though, with the Mean Green giving up 220.5 passing yards per game. IU's defense will be challenged once again this week attempting to defend against a North Texas backfield that averages 188 rushing yards per game. It's up the offense to carry the Hoosiers in this game, and after struggling to move the ball last week, I'm not so confident it can do so this week. 11. Hoosier State of Mind takes a look at the key players for Indiana football’s upcoming opponent. This week, let’s examine the North Texas Mean Green. The Hoosiers, reeling from a 37-15 beatdown at the hands of Maryland return home to host 2-2 North Texas. For an Indiana team seeking to keep its bowl game hopes alive, this one is a must win. Here’s who you need to know when the Mean Green line up against the Hoosiers on Saturday. Quarterback Dajon Williams Williams, a redshirt freshman, relieved Josh Greer in the fourth quarter of the Mean Green’s second game of the season against Louisiana Tech. North Texas had put up just 134 yards through three quarters before Williams led the Mean Green to a pair of late touchdowns on three possessions. Clearly, he was the spark this team needed. He started North Texas’ next game against lowly Nicholls State and was 11-of-14 through the air for 176 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball four times for 68 yards and two TDs. It sounds impressive, but I wouldn’t look too much into it. Nicholls State is a terrible, terrible team. So, in summary, Williams is your classic dual-threat QB, and considering how the Hoosiers did against Maryland’s dual-threat QB, Williams could be in for a big day. 12. FACTS & STATS: Site: Memorial Stadium (52,929) -- Bloomington, Indiana. Television: Big Ten Network. Home Record: UNT 2-1, Indiana 1-0. Away Record: UNT 0-1, Indiana 1-1. Neutral Record: UNT 0-0, Indiana 0-0. Conference Record: UNT 0-1, Indiana 0-0. Series Record: North Texas leads, 1-0. GAME NOTES: The Indiana Hoosiers will play in their final non-conference game of the season when they host the North Texas Mean Green at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. North Texas, from Conference USA, owns a 2-2 mark as it enters this contest. The Mean Green were idle last weekend following a 77-3 beatdown of FCS foe Nicholls on Sept. 20. UNT's results have all featured rather disparate scores, with losses to Texas (38-7) and Louisiana Tech (42-21), and a win over SMU (43-6). Indiana, representing the Big Ten Conference, owns a 2-2 record as well. The Hoosiers played their conference opener last weekend and got smoked by league newcomer Maryland, 37-15. The loss was a huge letdown on the heels of their upset win at Missouri the week prior (31-27). In the only other meeting between these two programs, the Mean Green earned a 24-21 victory at home during the 2011 season. Obviously, North Texas is not going to replicate its offensive performance against Nicholls anytime soon. The Mean Green pounded out 526 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. On the season, the Mean Green averages 37 points per game, but the club has been rather anemic in terms of yardage gained (313 ypg). Dajon Williams made his first career start against Nicholls and looked great, although the level of competition certainly helped. He completed 11-of-14 pass attempts for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Williams also showed a ton of speed out of the backfield, as he led the team with 68 yards and two scores on only four carries. The big debut was a nice start, but now Williams will have to prove that he can be an effective playmaker against teams at the FBS level. He'll get his first chance this weekend. 13. North Texas at Indiana, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Ind. Records: North Texas 2-2, 0-1 Conference USA; Indiana 2-2, 0-1 Big Ten TV: Big Ten Network: Eric Collins (play-by-play), Chuck Long (analyst), Rebecca Haarlow (sideline) Radio: KHYI-FM 95.3, KNTU-FM 88.1, KGAF-AM 1580 On the line: UNT can pick up what would be a notable win in the tenure of head coach Dan McCarney and take a key step toward becoming bowl-eligible by beating Indiana on Saturday. The Hoosiers aren’t exactly the class of the Big Ten, but they are still a Big Ten team. Wins over programs from Power 5 conferences do a world of good for teams from leagues like Conference USA. A win would also put UNT in a terrific spot in terms of getting to a bowl game for a second straight season. The Mean Green can get halfway to six wins with a victory over the Hoosiers. It’s hard to imagine UNT not picking up at least three more wins the rest of the season if it can beat Indiana. While the game is an important opportunity for UNT, it’s even bigger for the Hoosiers. This is Indiana’s fourth season under Wilson and the year the Hoosiers have legitimate hopes to win six games and get to a bowl. Indiana pulled off a big upset of Missouri, but also lost a game to Bowling Green that many had chalked up as a win before the season. Indiana lost to UNT in 2011 in Wilson’s first season at the school and flat can’t lose to the Mean Green again. If the Hoosiers win today and get to 3-2, it’s not that big of a stretch to see another three wins out there. Bouncing back from a 2-3 start to post the first finish of at least .500 fo the first time under Wilson might be a bit of a stretch. 14. North Texas Fun Facts: Their mascot is named Scrappy the Eagle. They have a Spirit Bell (the original one was made in Michigan, but had to be retired due to developing a crack) that is rung around the field to rally fans. Denton, Texas is where the main UNT campus resides, but there is a second campus in South Dallas. Notable Mean Green Alumni: Meat Loaf (musician), "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (professional wrestler), Dr. Phil McGraw (psychologist), "Mean" Joe Greene (retired NFL defensive tackle) Prediction: As ever, the Hoosiers make it extremely hard for me to pick their games, because they can never decide between inconsistent brilliance and inevitable failure. The game is at home, and it's against a non-Power 5 team, which should bode well for IU, but sadly we can never be too sure. I'm still picking Indiana to win 42-17, but the score could be just about anything, with either team winning. 15. Here is our fifth Scouting the Opponent Q&A with an opposing beat writer. 1. Indiana fans know very little about North Texas. One thing that I found interesting was the offense ranked last in FBS before the Nicholls game but then had a breakout game, scoring 77 points and putting up big yardage. How much of that was North Texas making a step forward and how much was it the level of competition with Nicholls? VITO: “My gut feeling is that like with a lot of situations similar to this one, it was a combination of both. UNT played a lot better than it had earlier in the season, largely because of the switch the Mean Green made at quarterback. Redshirt freshman Dajon Williams gives UNT a whole new look with a dual-threat player under center. Williams has the running ability that Josh Greer doesn’t and can also throw the ball on the run. With that being said, there is also no question that Nicholls State is terrible. UNT would have looked better than it had earlier in the year no matter who it had back there in its last outing. UNT’s game against Indiana will be telling and will let the Mean Green know where they stand in terms of their progress offensively.’’ Read more; http://indiana.scout.com/story/1458986-daily-feature-scouting-the-opponent?s=170
  16. Indiana had a disappointing Big Ten opener last week versus Maryland following an exhilarating 31-27 victory over then-No. 19 Missouri. Star running back Tevin Coleman and the Hoosiers will try to get back on track Saturday in their final non-conference game of the season against visiting North Texas. The Mean Green have had a week off to study after a 77-3 annihilation of Nicholls State on Sept. 20, and they will certainly watch the tape of their 24-21 win over the Hoosiers in 2011. Related D'Angelo Roberts' 3-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left at Missouri provided Indiana with its fourth-ever win on the road against a ranked opponent and the first in 10 years. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Hoosiers got torched for 361 yards through the air - most by the backup Caleb Rowe - in last week's 37-15 home loss to the Terrapins. On Saturday the Hoosiers will likely get the ball often to Coleman, who is leading the nation with 172.8 yards per game with seven touchdowns and 7.9 yards per carry, and hope an inexperienced North Texas quarterback won't expose its porous pass defense. 18. Running up and down the field in the first start of his college career boosted the confidence of North Texas quarterback Dajon Williams. What really gave the redshirt freshman a good feeling, though, was what took place during what became a remarkably important bye week before UNT’s game on Saturday at Indiana. Williams and the Mean Green marched up and down the field against what is usually a pretty stout UNT starting defense that nearly shut out SMU and stifled Nicholls State during a 77-3 win on Sept. 20. “I got a lot out of the open week, especially going with the ones [first team] against our defense,” Williams said. “We moved the ball a lot against them also. If we can move on them, we can move the ball on anybody because we have one of the best defenses around.” Read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/sports-headlines/20140929-football-williams-mean-green-took-advantage-of-bye.ece
  19. Let me just say I am extremely interested in this game. We had two weeks to prepare and heal up some key injuries. We had two weeks to help Dajon bone up on the playbook. We had two weeks to look at the defensive issues La. Tech posed against us with a red hot QB and make adjustments. I am not going into this game expecting a win. In fact, I would not be disappointed if we lost this game. But please don't throw out a stinker ie UT this year or Uof H a couple of years ago where the team looks physically and mentally unprepared. We're better than this. We should expect better. This isn't a powerhouse p5 team. We have every right to expect a respectable showing in this game. What I need in this game is to see what the impact of a dual option QB threat has for our running game and entire program. For years we have had a one dimensional type of offense which has allowed teams to load up against the run. Now, with Dajon we can threaten teams who shadow our running backs. This is huge to me. If IU decides to focus on DaJon then we should be able to run the ball effectively. If they say they will stop the run then Dajon should be able to complete the midrange passing game. I want to see this weapon used. Please don't put handcuffs on Dajon and force the power running game for 2 quarters -- let him use his god given tools. i know you hate turnovers, but please understand that Dajon and his style of play will open us up to more situations where we could turn the ball over. It's going to happen and you are going to have to accept that it will but will also open up a LOT more offensive firepower for this program. As he matures he will learn how to protect the ball better and when to throw it away. Don't be so anti turnover that you limit what he can do in the offense. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not try to load volumes of plays and sets and reads into Dajon's harddrive. Please keep it simple. Execution is so much more important than outsmarting with looks and checks here. Some of us already suspect that part of the downfall of Greer in the first three games might have been trying to load him with too many reads. In time you will be able to implement more variety but for now, let's keep things as simple as possible. Do not think if you get Marcus Smith 2-3 touches it is enough. I would like to see this big guy get the ball 5-10 times a game. He is a legitimate talent and with Dajon's threat to run it will only open him up even more. Lastly -- we have everything to gain and nothing to lose in this game so let it all hang out. If we lose this game we are still right in the thick of things in C-USA west. So take a couple of reasonable chances when you can to level out the playing field. GMG This post has been promoted to an article
  20. Indiana (2-2) returns to non-conference play Saturday against visiting North Texas (2-2) in a 2:30 p.m. game on the Big Ten Network. Protection, route running, play-calling, dropped balls and errant throws were all responsible for passing problems, Wilson said. He declined to blame the loss of big targets Cody Latimer, Kofi Hughes and Ted Bolser, who were all in NFL camps. Wilson said he was confident issues would be resolved because passing in the previous two games – 31-of-41 for 347 yards at Bowling Green and 18-of-33 for 252 yards at Missouri – was effective. "But it's got to be consistent," Wilson said. He said moving wideout Shane Wynn to the slot, where he previously played, is not the answer. He conceded opponents are committed to stopping the run and are "not respecting the pass game Read more:
  21. BLOOMINGTON – It is not a Rubic's Cube dilemma. Indiana center Collin Rahrig understands that. Still, it is a problem that must be solved, Saturday against North Texas (2-2), and every Saturday the rest of the season. The Hoosiers (2-2) want to run, need to run given the unexpected passing inconsistency. Opponents know that. They will jam seven to eight players at the line of scrimmage and attack, filling gaps, squeezing off the space big-play tailback Tevin Coleman needs to thrive. Much of that responsibility falls to the offensive line. Against Maryland, for the first time this season, the running game struggled. While every defense tries to make the offense one-dimensional, usually by taking away the run, not many defenses have made it work against IU in recent years. That the Terrapins did, Rahrig said, is a concern. The solution starts, but certainly doesn't end, with the line. “It's hard when they load the box,” Rahrig said. “Sometimes when you have some free (defensive) guys coming, you have to choose between which one is the worse one to get, which one do you want to let go. It's hard. You've got to block it. You've got to scheme it.” North Texas thrives with defense. It ranks No. 9 nationally in rushing defense, allowing 87.2 yards, and No. 17 in overall defense (307.8 yards). The Mean Green are certain to load up to try to shut down Coleman, who leads the nation in rushing (172. yards a game). Maryland held him to 122 yards, although with 43 coming on one run, that total is misleading. Read more: http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140930/SPORTS/140929616/1013
  22. The North Texas Mean Green have had two weeks to prepare for this game and are looking for their first road win of the season. Offensively, North Texas is all about controlling the tempo with a running game that’s averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Reggie Pegram leads the Mean Green with 214 yards and three touchdowns, while freshman Erick Evans is averaging more than eight yards per carry in a limited role. North Texas has six running plays that have produced more than 20 yards and have ran for 11 touchdowns in their last three games. Throwing the ball isn’t the Mean Green’s strength, as they’re completing just 54.1 percent of their passes and continue to play three different quarterbacks. Josh Greer has seen the most playing time with 50 pass attempts, and he has zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Defensively, the North Texas Mean Green are allowing 307.3 yards per game and have forced 11 turnovers and 18 sacks. Kenny Buyers leads North Texas with 15 solo tackles and Chad Polk has 3.5 sacks. 23. UNT head coach Dan McCarney held his weekly press conference this afternoon. The Mean Green were off last week and will return to action in a key game at Indiana. UNT is 2-2 with its two wins coming against 0-4 SMU and 0-5 Nicholls State. UNT sees this game as a chance to prove itself and post what would be an attention-grabbing win over a Big 10 opponent. Indiana upset Missouri earlier this year. The Hoosiers feature Tevinn Coleman, who leads the nation with an average of 172.8 rushing yards a game.
