  1. DENTON – UNT Tennis on Monday has signed Baylor transfer Olivia Malm, a native of Orebro, Sweden. She will join the Mean Green as a sophomore. "Olivia brings tremendous experience having represented Sweden in the European Youth Olympics and having played for a Big 12 program for one year," said UNT tennis health program coordinator Rodrigo de Almeida. "When she came to campus for an official visit it was truly special. We believe her values and character are representative of our team's culture and cannot wait to see Olivia reach her full potential here at UNT while helping us achieve our team goals." Malm won the Swedish Championship in both doubles and singles for girls 18 and under in January of 2020. She also represented Sweden in the European Youth Olympics and won the first round in 2017. Malm won eight singles matches and four doubles matches for the top 30 Baylor Bears who reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. "I chose UNT because I feel it is a great place to improve on and off the court," said Malm. "The coaches and staffs are very supportive and positive, and I can't wait to be surrounded by great people in a great environment." Malm has held an ITF Juniors ranking as high as 598 and singles ranking as high as 1025. She has been a semifinalist or runner-up at several ITF tournaments from 2018 through 2020. The transfer was a runner-up in the Swedish Championship for doubles from 2018 through 2020. read more: https://meangreensports.com/news/2022/5/16/womens-tennis-tennis-adds-swedish-transfer.aspx

  4. A native of Fresno, Texas, Neville heads to UNT after entering his name into the NCAA transfer portal on April 29. Out of Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas, Neville was rated 3-stars, the No. 96 Lone Star State product, No. 104 wide receiver and No. 664 prospect overall nationally in the class of 2021 on the 247Sports Composite. Neville chose Nebraska over 42 other scholarship offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. According to his Nebraska bio, Neville did not play in 2021, which allows him to take a redshirt. He will be immediately eligible at North Texas and able to play 4 seasons. 6. I just heard from the ENMU Head Coach Tye Hiatt. He was very warm and supportive. He said that Kason will join them this summer and have two years of eligibility. He said that they had high expectations! I am pleased. The Coach said he could help us get tickets for us to see him play. Good news for a good young man indeed. GMG

  9. For some sports gamblers, betting on the Super Bowl coin toss is about as good as the odds can get. But for , Jim McIngvale the Houston furniture mogul known as “Mattress Mack,” placing multi-million-dollar wagers on the big game and other marquee sporting events offers a different strategy—heads I win, tails I win. For years, McIngvale, who owns the three-store chain Gallery Furniture, has made his headline-grabbing wagers not for gambling glory, but as sensible hedges against his big sales promotions. During the Super Bowl, March Madness, the World Series, and other events, Mack will place a giant bet on one team—either a Texas club or one closest geographically to his home state—and offer customers a full refund if they win. During this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, for example, he wagered $5.5 million on Kansas and ran a promotion to refund all customers who spent $3,000 or more on certain types of mattresses and furniture if the Jayhawks won. Right after Kansas beat the University of North Carolina on Monday night, Mack and his 20-person sales team received a stream of text messages from their customers: We won! We won! “When does a furniture salesman get a text at midnight from a customer?” McIngvale asks. One customer bought seven mattresses for a total of $38,000 and another bought $40,000 worth of furniture to outfit a new home. “I’ve always heard about his promotions on the news, but I never needed furniture until now,” says Robert Cruz, who has a new house full of new, free furniture. “When I heard the score I said, ‘Wow. That’s cool.” Read more: https://www.forbes.com/sites/willyakowicz/2022/04/06/mattress-mack-jim-mcingvale-sports-bets-march-madness-super-bowl/?sh=75b1d2eb5264
  10. Less than a month after he committed to Montana State, Kadren Johnson changed his commitment to North Texas. Johnson, a defensive lineman who previously played at Abilene Christian, announced his decision to join North Texas on social media Sunday, tweeting that he's "100% committed" to the Mean Green. He wrote the same thing in a since-deleted tweet when he committed to MSU on March 29. Johnson told 406mtsports.com Monday that he changed his commitment for a "family reason." He declined to go into further detail. Johnson signed a financial aid agreement with MSU shortly after he committed, according to MSU. Transfers don't sign national letters of intent, so they are not bound to their new school until they enroll.ext Up Johnson stands about 6-foot-4 and weighs around 250 pounds. The Texas native has spent his entire college career in his home state, starting at Navarro College before signing with Abilene Christian, which he attended the previous two years. MSU assistant defensive line coach Nick Jean-Baptiste held the same position at Navarro, a junior college, when Johnson played there in 2019. read more: https://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/sports/bobcats/football/montana-state-loses-transfer-kadren-johnson-to-north-texas/article_a42c20ac-6054-5343-854c-661cc8d52f3f.html
  11. Deciding to commit to North Texas Basketball and play for Coach Grant McCasland’s program is not for the faint-hearted. You won’t be playing in an offensive-oriented, track-level paced, exciting run and gun system like you did for your AAU team. You probably won’t be playing the most aesthetically pleasing basketball and you certainly won’t be seeing your name anywhere on the list of individual scoring records. Instead, McCasland’s program predicates itself on toughness, discipline, and the desire to play intense defense for a full 40 minutes. As followers of Conference USA have learned, this unique philosophy has turned the Mean Green into an annual championship contender. In McCasland’s five years at the helm of Mean Green basketball, the 2020 C-USA Coach of the Year has developed a championship-level program in Denton by priding his team’s culture on its defensive identity. In the 2021-22 season, the Mean Green held opponents to just 55.7 PPG, which was the lowest allowed in the entire country. In 32 games last year, North Texas gave up 70+ points on just three occasions; one of them to the eventual National Champion Kansas Jayhawks, who barely passed that elusive mark in a 71-59 neutral site contest. Even more impressive; over a course of the last 68 games they have played dating back to February 1st 2020, they’ve only allowed 80 points in a game one time. So how did a team that averaged just 65.1 PPG (317th out of 358 division 1 schools) this past year win 25 games and run through C-USA to a 16-2 record and a regular-season championship? Simple, they made it a priority to bring an unmatched intensity on the defensive end, paired with a resilient attitude and togetherness stemming down from their passionate coach. read more: https://bustingbrackets.com/2022/04/08/north-texas-basketball-grant-mccaslands-mean-green-defensive-machine/

  14. North Texas Mean Green 2021 record: 6-7 Best case in 2022: North Texas relied on one of the nation’s best rushing attacks to win the final five games of the regular season and reach a bowl game. The 2022 version of the Mean Green hope the ending to the 2021 season is a prelude of the start in 2022. North Texas gets a chance in Week 1 to shock the state with a home game against an SMU program under the direction of a first-year head coach. A win against the Mustangs sets new goals for North Texas. The team rides that momentum into Conference USA play to make a Cinderella run at the conference championship game and a 10-win season. Worst case in 2022: Quarterback play, and a few key losses along the defensive line, cost North Texas a strong start to the season, which leaves the Mean Green scrambling again to reach the six-win plateau needed to reach a bowl game. No DeAndre Torrey means the team takes a step back offensively and North Texas doesn’t reach a bowl game. Uncertainty surrounds the program with a move to the AAC on the horizon. read more: https://www.texasfootball.com/article/2022/03/17/best-case-worst-case-possible-outcomes-for-each-g5-program-in-texas?ref=article_preview_title
  15. Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is a businessman from Texas who owns and operates the Gallery Furniture retail chain. Mattress Mack has become sort of an internet sensation for the exceptionally large wagers he places on sporting contests, most recently with his record-setting total $9.5 million dollar bet on the Cincinnati Bengals to win Super Bowl LVI. Not only is Mack notoriously famous for gambling gigantic sums on sports contests in his personal life, but he uses a similar approach in his business. Mack offered Gallery Furniture customers a full “reimbursement to those who spent $3,000 or more” on furniture from popular brands like Sealy, and Tempur-Pedic if the Bengals were to win. He also has run this same promotion for the Astros in the past. Unfortunately, Mack lost his massive bet when the Bengals lost Super Bowl LVI, but as a result did not have to reimburse customers. Mack played football himself in college for the University of North Texas. Coming out of college, Mack and his wife moved to Houston to run the furniture store that started “as a small business” and eventually grew to the $200 million annual business it is today. At the start of their business venture, Mack and his wife used to sleep in the store, and Mack, as a last resort when initially struggling financially, invested his last $10,000 to air a TV commercial. The commercial became a huge success when Mack spoke at a rapid-fire pace to get his whole message to fit in the 25 seconds allotted. At the very end of the Gallery Furniture advertisement, Mack exclaimed, “We will save you money!” The slogan “save you money!” stuck to this day and so did McIngvale’s nickname, Mattress Mack.
