There is going to be a split coming in the next 5-7 years.  Financially it just doesn't make sense for the G5 schools to keep it up.  G5 will be the new D1AA and have its own championship.

It will probably come sooner than later. It has been speculated that $100 million is the NIL buy in, which will push out a number of p5 programs as well as all the G5's. When this happens there will be a realignment of most if not all conferences. It could be $100 million NIL requirement for the Super Programs and pulling a number out of the hat $35 million for the next tier, and all others dropped to 1AA or another level in between.

You mean the Dallas Ponies uniforms?

So we can prick them all we want too but the football coaches have recruited very well using "DALLAS" as a tag, and I expect the basketball team will as well. And do we have "PONY" envy? I don't understand our propensity to create SMU dialog  as if we were jealous junior high students.

  3. Regarding Benford, if memory serves we were paying off a fired football coach, didn't have the money to fire the basketball coach, so he coached the last year of his contract. Benford was a really nice guy who couldn't coach and didn't know what to do with Tony Mitchell.

Maybe, but don't jump to conclusions.

Most HS kids are signed with the assumption - in any sport - that they are going to grow/fill out/whatever.  It's just not going to happen for 100% of them.  Every now and then you have a misfire: a kid that is already maxed out, or doesn't want to put in the work, or something else.

not sure what the case is with Morgan.  His dad was a Mean Green great in the late 1980s.  The genes are there.

His dad was all conference in 1988, and I think played only one year. The 1988 team included Tony Worell [sic?] and went to Utah for NCAA Sub -Regional's as a 16th seed where we were matched against North Carolina. My 8th grade son and I flew with the team and had a great time. The Mavericks were in town and we saw them play the Jazz.

Oh man, I know we joke about SMU and their fans, but this picture really does speak volumes. I think more people would come to watch my 5 year old son play soccer. And this is a tournament!!!

I was at last years SMU/Memphis game at Dickies Arena and it seemed like the Tigers had as many fans as the Stangs. Regardless the crowd looked like it was in the 100's.

Quite sure personalized jerseys are available at the Rider Store on the Riderville site. Any name and number with shipping to anywhere in North America. BTW, there’s a good follow article on Fine on the Rider site as well. Looking forward to watching Fine compete at training camp this spring!

You are correct ! They do. I just never have checked that site out, plus it was a good article on Fine. With a new coach coming in Fine's job was up in the air.

Yep and it also explains why the Liberty transfer QB decided to come here.  He probably knew the Morris hire was pending and he was going to get the starting nod.

Also Liberty's last year starting QB dropped out of the portal and is returning. However I think the transfer QB enrolled at UNT before last year's starter decided to return to Liberty.

I know the CFL is a more table league than whatever spring league is going on in the States (this year it'll be the "UFL") but I'd love to see Mason in an Arlington Renegades uniform (or at least San Antonio/Houston). Can anyone find a Mason Fine Saskatchewan jersey for sale though? That'd be a pretty cool get.

Fine was signed as a backup so I doubt a jersey with his name is in the offering. I went to their web site as well as ebay and saw nothing personalized for sale.

Until they make the NCAA, the 85-86 team is our best.

Correct. I was off by a few years. The men won the SLCC in 1988 and lost to North Carolina in sub regional played at Utah.Judy Nelson, Corky's wife , was the women's coach and won the Southland Conference Championship, which I think is only women's basketball conference championship we have ever won. We lost in the 1st round but I forget to whom and where. I should remember that the team played 85-86 as the athletic department had no money for a banner, reached out to me, and I paid $500 for the one hanging in the Supper Pitt. I only mention this in order to let those not around at that time how cash strapped and under funded our athletic department was. While we have been criticized for dropping down to the Southland Conference it was a bus league which was all we we could afford at the time. We still are underfunded do to the lack of financial support by our alumni base. Granted we have had a few graduates with deep pockets step up to the plate to fund the new indoor football  and basketball practice facilities but our alumni giving lags all other D1 programs in Texas.

    It shouldn't be.
Us, along with TCU & UTA should have a round-robin each year to crown the metroplex champs.  Rotate home/away between teams each year.  If tied, point diff crowns the champs.   It just makes too much sense, and since there are so many non-conference games in basketball, it should be fairly easy to schedule.

In the past [ and I mean way back ] there was talk about having a holiday tournament in DFW with UNT,SMU,UTA, and TCU as participates.Naturally it sounded too good to be true, and as it turned out it wasn't.Oh well!

The season's not over, but based on their play thus far; I think they are the best ever.  The only team close would be the Reades and Mitchell teams.

I wonder if Quincy Noble now regrets her decision to transfer to Ok St.  She is currently averaging about 13 points and 3 rebounds for OSU (11-8, 4-4).  She was a NT great, but she might be getting more playing time at OSU than she would on this NT team.

That 1988 team was really good.

Chandler is a good kid and super tough.  UNT is a great fit for him.  Hope he can stay healthy and upright.

One of the toughest QB I have seen play for the Eagles was Todd Dodge's son. He was undersized , took a lot of hits, and played hurt throughout  his career.  He left UNT when his father was fired , transferred to either McNeese or NE La. [don't remember which] ,and I don't think played much afterwards.

List all the 1st year coaches and compare his record to theirs. While there are some coaches that have winning seasons after their predecessor has been fired they are in the minority. For example the Northwestern coach did, the Colorado coach didn't.

This was just a subjective question. You can probably review most first year coaches maiden record after the previous coach was fired and find some justification if they have a losing record. I think that Morris inherited a defense that no one expected to be the worst in the country and  we lost two games we should have won, Navy and Memphis. If we go 7&5 its still the nation's worse defense but we had a winning season.
