  1. Hey folks,

I got the wife interested in football 3 years ago (married 6 years as of last May), after we met coach Lineweaver here in Euless and decided he was such a great guy we had to support his team. Now I've talked her into going to the homecoming game tomorrow (first college fb game for her); she asked if we'll be able to get tickets there. Does anyone know how hard that will be; or will anyone have an extra couple of tickets you could sell us? We will be in Denton by about 4 p.m. tomorrow.

  2. Unless you are just looking to support a UNT alum that bought the chain and trying to turn it around ...

Hey, here in Euless, we're supposed to be sitting on top of that gas field called the "Barnett Shale". But, I don't think it's any coincidence that there's a Pancho's right in the middle of where that "natural gas" is supposed to be.

  3. FYI, UTEP beat Tulsa this year and has UH at the Sun Bowl this weekend. Should be an amazing game. UTEP has a redshirt frosh @ QB who is absolutely tearing it up. The kid from Euliss a couple years ago...anyone remember Trevor Vittatoe? Probably not...that program flings it around maybe 30 times a year.

It's always good to see a home town favorite like Vittatoe doing well for himself; honestly, he's a good all around guy, and has worked very hard to get where he is. Like you say, Trinity isn't real pass happy, but Vittatoe made opponents respect the pass, which helped the running game work. Trinity coach Lineweaver knows you have to pass to win championships. I thought these game highlights from last weekend, Trinity vs. previously unbeaten Irving MacArthur, give a good idea of Trinity's offense this year. I was skeptical of a small guy like Samir Baker (20) at RB, but the guy can find the end zone!

Here's the link; type "76040" for the zip code.

  4. So I guess you are of the school that the next one will be closer for us. Maybe so. Against who? Another junk team. Really I'm just sick of it. I can't stand it anymore.

Well, I think there's been some improvement in QB and defensive play, areas that have been much discussed. Honestly, I'm of the school of "Let's get some offensive line muscle in here". I did feel I took some criticism for advocating a recruiting pipeline to Euless Trinity for that kind of talent (like "I'm sure our coaches are looking at all the schools"). Simply speaking, UNT needs some hosses on the offensive line. I'm never sure offensive linemen attract as much attention as other players; Euless Trinity, now as in years past, has some good ones.

  5. I think our propensity of going for it on 4th down so much shows a lack of confidence in the kicking game. With that said, I hope we're looking for a kicker to offer a scholarship to.

At this time, I'm advocating improving the kicking game by whatever means it takes. The kicking game has always been important, but this year's rule changes, not to mention the close games decided by field goals this year, make the kicking game increasingly important. Haven't some pro teams used "kicking consultants"? I'm generally opposed to consultants of all kinds, but if it would help, I think it should be considered; the sooner the better.

  6. I tried to a few times a couple of years ago, but it wasn't because of the football team's performance, so does that mean that I don't count?

It's good to keep some perspective. At one point as an undergrad at then NTSU, I was foolishly attempting a music major. Fortunately, my piano teacher pointed out to me, "Dwayne, you're just not getting it, but our best students can only get jobs playing in lounges in Las Vegas. And then, some who don't make it will jump from the 6th floor of Kerr Hall." Years later, I'm ok with being a geographer, and do enjoy singing in the church choir.

  7. I just thought this was an interesting perspective from the recap of today's OU at Iowa State game. The link is interesting, but I like this quote, "Under first-year coach Gene Chizik, Iowa State took a major step forward in defeat. The Cyclones had been outscored 133-37 in their first three Big 12 games, falling to Texas 56-3 at home last week." Of course, OU went on to win 17-7, but not without a fight from a 1-7 team, led by a coach who was defensive coordinator at UT when they won the mythical national championship in 2004. I've actually been so far out in the North Carolina mountains in the last week that I could only read the sparsest tidbits of football coverage, but it does seem like in the last two games, we've (1.)Won our 1st game this year and in the Dodge era, (2.) Found a fine young quarterback, and (3.) Started seeing MAJOR improvements in defensive play. Am I so wrong? Of course I still want to see UNT coaches recruiting some offensive line talent from the Euless Trinity Trojans, but I'm a homer, and think these are some young men who have improved steadily this season.

Great article and praise for Coach Dodge.

Excellent find. I loved this quote:

"Coach Mack Brown credits Young for helping chill him out and for removing what felt at times like a fear of failure. His personality infused everything about the Longhorns.

Daniel elicits very similar praise in Columbia."

I never had any real doubts of Coach Dodge's ability to take UNT to great success, mostly based on what Daniel has done for Mizzu. I'm just hoping they can beat OU; they may be as good as any D1 school in the country right now.

  9. Euless Trinity roster

So, how exactly do you pronounce Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada???

I hope our announcer starts practicing his name now, my goodness.

If anyone has an "in" with the radio announcer, and want to suggest ways to improve Polynesian pronunciation, let him know about all the Tongan football players at Euless Trinity. They could watch a game at Pennington field some Friday night; maybe the Trinity announcer could give them some tips; none of the announcers at the neutral playoff sites can pronounce their names well. Check out the link to the varsity roster at the top of this post; the Tongan names start showing up in the 30's.

  10. UNT didn't try a 49-yard field goal late in the third quarter, instead throwing on fourth-and-4. That play gained 2 yards.

Given UNT's spread offense, the higher-percentage option likely was to go on fourth down, but UNT needed points.

On an earlier drive, UNT went on fourth-and-18 rather than try a 52-yard field goal -- a stretch at best. The drive ended on a dropped pass.

    Noticeable effect

The NCAA's new kickoff line has helped result in no touchbacks on UNT's 23 kicks. Punter Truman Spencer took over kickoff duties this season for the first time after kicker Steven Woodward left the team.

"It's Spencer's first year to kick off, and he was pressed into that duty," Dodge said. "He'll improve on that. With his strong leg, if he can get some [touchbacks], it would help out with our coverage unit."

Again, not to harp on the kicking game, but I hope the 42 yard limit increases, through coaches mentoring the kickers or whatever. After the Cowboys game last Monday night, I was thinking back a few years when Jerry Jones talked about not spending money, draft picks, etc. on kickers...glad he changed his mind.

  11. It made no difference to the outcome of the game. Letting the Cajuns get the long run near the end and make the FG is what sealed it for them, not the 2-point miss. I have no problem with him going for 2 early to make up for the missed extra point.

I couldn't agree more; if 2 points was needed , it's just a judgment call whether to try it earlier or later. That's what head coaches are paid for. Making the one point conversion isn't guaranteed, as was already proven earlier in the same game. I read that a missed extra point kick by USC was what turned out to be the margin of victory when Stanford won Saturday.

I agree with what I just wrote,

  12. I was reflecting on when Meager was named the starter for the season and was thinking that it was a good idea to have Meager start through the Arkansas game so Vizza didn't get killed. It actually happened. I'm shocked, I feel like Nostradamus or something.

Also, if we're going to use a scholly on a kicker, how about a kickoff man, the other teams are getting REALLY good starting field position.

I think it's something reasonable to consider; I've started wondering if some of the major upsets happening this year are partly a result of the change in the kicking rules. There were some big runbacks in this weekend's games.

  13. Care to explain why you think this? He has missed one XP and two FGs all season. He is a true freshman that was recruited by NOTRE DAME - who asked him to walk on and play. Instead he decided on NT because it was closer to home. And in return for that, he gets this board...

I did advocate looking around for kickers to recruit and perhaps use a scholarship on during the off season. I do think the kicking game needs attention; missed field goals were big in the FAU game as well as last night (also for FAU against South Florida yesterday). Perhaps it could be done in a positive way; I've read somewhere that Dodge has a field goal kicking drill to simulate the stress of an actual game. If our kicker is not on scholarship, perhaps the possibility of getting one for him or whoever the kicker is for next year should be considered. Not to sound too high schoolish, but the Euless Trinity football program put on a variety entertainment night for the players and coaches to entertain each other as a unity building exercise (the Trinity assistant coaches did their best "Backstreet Boys" imitation. I would suggest any positive way to relieve the stress (which can be a big problem for kickers) these players and coaches must be feeling.

  14. This beautiful encouragement leads me to offer a technical observation: it appears to me that if the other team attempts to make a block, our defensive players assume they are in fact blocked. I would like to see a lot more of the getting around blockers thing.

Oh gosh I can't stop. Here's another: soon after the game started, they showed GV on the sideline and he looked really lost. However, based on his play later in the game, I think he's going to get a lot better.

Seeing Dodge being quoted in the DMN today saying Vizza is the quarterback for the rest of the season is quite encouraging to me. In this system especially, it's important to have a quarterback know he's the man! I don't think Dodge enjoyed playing under Darrell Royal with his "when you pass, 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad" philosophy. I do think many could agree with another Royal saying; "A confused team can't play aggressively".

  15. Watching Boise State and NMSU, there is so much difference in team speed and talent it's just rediculous. BSU is making the Aggies look silly.

I think if we had more speed on defense, the interceptions we had when struggling offensively would have been returned for scores.

  16. There was more action in the stands then on the field.

Hey, we've got some tough guys here in Euless. The first thing I realized when I moved here was "I'm not gonna whip anybody's a** in this neighborhood". I'm glad to watch the hard hitting from the stands!

  17. Oh, and since I am got my storm troopin quota done for the day, my top 5:

    1) Vizza has guts. He may not last an entire year, but him going full bore into defenders has to pump up the team.

    2) Jackson and Fitzgerald made some crazy catches.

    3) At no time did we get a punt blocked.

    4) At no point did I turn to my wife and threaten to kill myself if we ran the ball one more time.

    5) At no point did I fear the assistant coaches would put any of our fans into a head lock.

I really like the "no head lock" idea.

  18. I wish DD the best. He is a former coach here, and as far as I'm concerned has no bearing on our current program.

he's in a terrible situation, but he's doing a decent job with what he's got. USU is scoring just under 12 ppg more than they did last year. Don't see the point of kicking a man who poured a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this thing here. It's the past. Wish him well and move on. Todd Dodge is our coach now.

note: I'm not talking to you personally, OT, just the general DD-bashing and DD-crutch excuses that seem to be prevalent here, even still.

My wife's side of the family has deep roots in Utah (yes, they're LDS, for the most part). I wish DD and the family I've met in Logan well! We could stay busy here focusing on our own problems!
