  1. Great points by Gmoney and foutsrouts. After watching us go for it on 4th downs at OU and SMU it's interesting to see the conservativism creep in at the end of the season.

Still, consider we went into Jonesboro after 5 days to prepare for this game following a track meet of an emotional loss and still owned ASU in their house till the final drive. Our defense got 8 stops tonight. 4 punts, 2 turnovers and forced 2 field goals. All I can ask for is improvement and tonight I saw it against what looked by most to be one of the two best teams in the Belt back in September.

    We're gonna be fine.

    Rick

Also great points by you, Rick, particularly in regards to Gmoney on going for 3. I was wondering before that fg attempt if it might not be better to go for it, since we've been giving up lots of field position (and points) recently by playing conservatively on the exchanges. I'll continue to support Dodge and the move to a "wide-open" offense, as long as he doesn't forget that it's "wide-open" that got him here, and not "close to the vest".

  2. I've found this on the EulessTrinityTrojans web site. Those of us who drool at the prospect of seeing their defensive line anchor, Robert Griffin (No. 88, all 6'7", 360 lb. of him), play at UNT may enjoy watching him anchor the "Haka" on CBS tomorrow. Here's the link:

Euless Trinity on CBS, doin' the Haka!

Here he is displaying his dancing skills:

A little game and dance video!

Coach Dodge, PLEASE DO NOT let these guys (or anyone other than North Texas) sign this guy! Let him name his own defensive coordinator if he wants, but DON'T lose this player!

    What we can't let happen.

Sorry I don't have any game video of this stud, but those wanting to see some guys who love to play defense, come watch Trinity play Arlington Martin Friday, Nov. 16, at Birdville Fine Arts stadium (yes guys, you may have to take a little culture with your football). It would be well worth the price of admission!

  3. I am stoked about my first opportunity to see Vizza and this offense in person come Thursday night!

You will not be disappointed to see this young quarterback and offensive unit "in person". The statistics are great, but feeling the excitement they bring to a game just makes you feel that whatever struggles we may go through, the future will make it all worthwhile.

  4. How many people didn't go to the game b/c they were pissed that we lost the FB game ??

Not pissed; exhausted. Even with football, there's things we still have to do around the house on Saturdays, and the time it takes for the drive each way, the game, and going out to eat afterwards, it's at least 7 hours. I can't really claim any particular negative emotion, except perhaps numbness. Even that can't really overcome the positives; we've found a great quarterback and have some great young guys already playing this year, not to mention some redshirts I'm confident WILL be great, such as Marcus King and Jordan Scoggins from here in Denton. Plus, I really believe in Dodge, Villarreal, Bataille, and the future of North Texas.

  5. Hey, had a great historical time last night; talked the wife into going and sitting in the student section (much better noise there, c'mon alums, admit it). Of course I was disappointed, yet highly entertained, by the athleticism and pageantry of the whole thing. Then I was gobsmacked (ok, this old man had to look it up in the Urban Dictionary) this morning when talking to my neighbor here in Euless, when he asked, "Why would over 26,000 show up for a team that's only won 1 game?". Well, I gave some kind of forgettable response, but am thinking, "Why didn't I have a Top Ten list of reasons to keep attending NT games no matter what?". So, can you folks help me come up with one? I'll admit, it may just be laziness that I don't come up with an entire list myself, but just to get things started, I'll give some potential reasons my wife and I had.

    Me:

    1. Hey, it's my school; you can't divorce your school.

    2. North Texas football scores more in a game than any hockey team, a lot of basketball teams, and the idiot kid chatting up the girls next to us.

    3. Giovanni Vizza; great quarterback.

    She:

    1. They've only won one game? They look pretty good to me!

    2. They've got a band with 35 flautists! (that's flutists to you nonflautists).

    3. Giovanni Vizza; cool name!

We've decided to combine two of our "reasons" into one, and let you guys come up with the rest.....number:

    10. Giovanni Vizza; cool name, great quarterback!

  6. I think the focus should really now be on all the African-Americans, Caucasians, Mexicans, etc, etc, etc, who are playing by the rules of our coaching staff and are honoring and respecting authority while doing so. Haven't we all (no matter our race) been taught to respect our elders as it is?

Also, I know many of us would hope that the 3 young men who got kicked off our school's football team will find their own semblance of peace with all this, too. Name-calling to those 3 only puts us at the same level they have allegedly shown, now doesn't it? Why create 2 sets of problems with all this?

Well said, PlummMeanGreen. The really powerful stories these days (maybe always?) are about redemption. Anyway, I AM starting to think you're the one to lead us into new stadium promised land. Hey, have you ever checked out the one Wake Forest has? A bit smallish, but a little upsizing and.....

  7. trinity & ld bell

trinity ot james bradshaw #63 and ld bell dt thomas lloyd III are both on our prospect list.

Great news; Bradshaw is having a big year, and has been a stabilizing influence on our offensive line. And the Trinity offensive line has overcome early season injuries with a nine-man rotation that has worked great!

  8. People, I am getting tired of personal attacks against the players involved in the recent controversy. The coaching staff will deal with them as they see fit.

I absolutely agree, Cerebus. After working for a local government in this area for over 20 years (that has often NOT handled such things well), I have nothing but admiration for the way our coaching staff and administration have handled this matter. If they've been getting advice on handling this, it's been good advice, well taken. The best revenge is living well.

  9. I believe the press has been fair and balanced thus far. HOWEVER, there is a critical step which the press needs to take: follow this story to conclusion. Don't let this drift off the radar and fade away, because the media has a really bad habit of doing just that.

It is completely reasonable to expect the media to keep after this story, and specifically to keep after the NAACP until its investigation is completed and the results of the investigation are made public. In a situation this volatile, it's not acceptable for any investigating body to drag its feet or fail to release its conclusions. The accusations have been made public, so a public conclusion is called for.

I do not know if the NAACP would or would not announce their findings if those findings were negative. But if they conclude that no racism took place, then that damn well needs to come out. The media needs to stay at this and keep asking questions until they get answers.

Gentle prodding - IN RESPECTFUL TONES - of the press to keep asking questions is appropriate. The media does sometimes listen to its readers. They tune out angry, fist-shaking, conspiratorial rants, but reasonable and intelligent opinions are at least listened to.

So keep up the drum beat - the DRC and other media need to keep asking questions. And if the DRC fails to pursue this story, or fails to publish the conclusion on Page 1, then, yes, that would unquestionably be unfair and unbalanced coverage.

I must agree with Smitty on this one; the "REQUIRED" front page story should be the one which details the pounding of the nails into the coffin of the original story, the one about the complaint. I'm reminded of this quote from the movie "Shipping News", where the veteran newsman is indoctrinating the wannabe reporter on headline writing:

Billy: It's finding the center of your story, the beating heart of it, that's what makes a reporter. You have to start by making up some headlines. You know: short, punchy, dramatic headlines. Now, have a look, what do you see?

[Points at dark clouds at the horizon]

    Billy: Tell me the headline.

Quoyle: Horizon Fills With Dark Clouds?

    Billy: Imminent Storm Threatens Village.

Quoyle: But what if no storm comes?

Billy: Village Spared From Deadly Storm.

And yes, I do believe the (Mean Green) Village will be spared from the deadly storm!

  10. As some of you may know my mother-in-law is the head office lady at Colleyville Heritage. One of the other women who works there is Evan Walker's mother. According to my mother-in-law, who got the story directly from his mother, Evan was actually drawn into a fist fight over the racism allegations by a white fraternity member who was upset the black players were questioning Dodge.

So, as if slandering a coaching staff weren't enough, these allegations have also caused senseless violence on our fair campus. Fun times. <_<

I must agree...at this point, I think we all (including those of us like myself, who believe Dodge has been unfairly maligned), should agree that the kind of incident you mentioned is exactly what we don't need. It's frustrating sometimes, but the American system does work. Trial by media doesn't work, and neither does violence or intimidation by either side. As a Bob Dylan song says, "Don't hate nothing at all except hatred". As my employer (probably the same as yours) once said, in a memo after 9-11, "remain clam" (their spelling, not mine).

  11. Sorry to be double posting this from an earlier reply to the "Tired head" thread, but thought it might generate more discussion as a separate topic. EagleMBA says this link is interesting and worth some study, so don't just take my word for it. If any of you have any thoughts about this link or anything related to it, such as whether this describes Navy's triple option, if so, which version of it, how can our defense play it as far as schemes, personnel etc....I just thought it might be fun!

    Triple option discussed.

  12. from all this racism talk and crap!!!!! i realize we have to talk about it because it is allegedly happening in our program, but damn, i'm sick of it!!!!!

ON TO THE GAME....how are we going to beat navy??? how are we going to defend the triple option???? i know nothing about the option other than it involves redirection or something and i know our offense hasn't been lights out lately. PLEASE...TALK ABOUT THE GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!

    OH...AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!

Good idea, cause WE NEED A WIN! I found this discussion of the triple option and wondered if anyone who had watched Navy play on TV this season could comment as to whether any of these schemes apply to Navy's version.

    Triple option discussed.

  13. Neither would I really wish to laugh off such issues; I found it quite painful reading about the racist remarks directed towards minority athletes on their campus visit in years past, resulting in the suspension of a fraternity, and certainly bad publicity for the University and its sports programs. However, I say, let's give everyone the benefit of the doubt which we would all hope to be given. In all fairness to coach Dodge; (1.) I do remember a black man I met back at the City of Dallas (when his team was going up against ours in bi-district the next weekend) talking about a special relationship he had with Dodge from his son attending the football camps held by Dodge at North Texas, which the gentleman said were more affordably priced than similar camps (2.) Casey Fitzgerald went from being a walk on to earning a scholarship after Dodge took over, praising Fitzgerald (more than I've heard him praise any NT player) as a "First (teamer) all the way". (3.) My understanding is that Tre Newton is Riley Dodge's best friend-is it likely he'd be hanging around with the son of his "racist" coach? (4.) As far as I know, Not that many players are at North Texas (yet) as a result of anything Todd Dodge has done. (5.) Our head coach at Euless Trinity, Steve Lineweaver, has some experience with a diverse team, knows Dodge (has a son who was an assistant coach at Southlake with Dodge), and has praised him as someone opening up opportunities for area players. Given a fair shake, I'm confident Dodge will come out of this fine. As Dodge has recognized some of us fans as being "clear headed", let's remain clear of judgment.

  14. This month's national geographic has an article on Tonga which is quite fascinating. I feel fortunate to live in a town with a major connection to the Tongans. Here's the link:

    National Geographic, "The Two Tongas"

I have noticed Arizona State fans chatting in their forums about their good fortune in recruiting Dmitri Nance (Euless Trinity RB from the 2005 State Champion team), who scored 3 tds for them last weekend. Of course it didn't make the local Sunday papers, due to the time zone difference. They also mentioned Saia Falahola, all state offensive lineman from the same class who went with Nance to Arizona State. I guess I'm ok with that, and won't mention any present high school players, but it did bother me that the Sun Devil fans were saying "We should sign all the Trinity players we can get". That pretty much sums up my hopes for a North Texas-Euless Trinity recruiting pipeline!

  15. I personally have never booed at anyone at any level, more less teenage athletes. Call it what you want, but its classless and not what a new programs needs. Leaving early when the game is still on the line is absurd, but if you can justify it, go ahead. I will never publicly call out coaches or athletes who are laying it on the line.

You money guys and others can do what you want but just don't be the one if front of me who yells shi.t at some WR who drops a sure TD pass or who calls out Roman for not fielding a punt in public because it won't be pretty. If you don't have some good to say then say it in private with your freakin buddies at the bar. Don't call out kids in front of the young kids and their families trying to enjoy a game. We all want more fans yet we run off the some of those same people with crap that flies out of people's mouths who don't know a bad read from a blocking sled.

I guess you're the first perfect individual I've encountered since my sister was in town last Christmas.

  16. Most of these fans are a joke on the alumni side. Yelling and screaming at teenage kids. One guy ran down to the first row and yelled crap at Dodge and the offensive skill players. I took several new people to the game for the first time and UNT has the typical band wagon fans. I cannot tell you how many people got up and left in the 3rd quarter. Piss poor fans. Next time I see someone yelling at Mosely for fumbling or Vizza for throwing a 40 yard pick (that is better than a punt) or at Green for getting beat on the double move for a score, I will be the guy getting escorted off by the police.

True fans like Rick, Emmitt, etc. etc. may be disappointed but never have I seen so many people yell crap at teenagers and at Dodge and Mendoza. That is unacceptable to me.

I have not been following UNT very long, so many guys on this forum have been around forever. This program might grow some with some wins but it will never be more than North Texas.

So many of these fans yell crap in the stands and have no inclination of what the hell is going on. After taking some new young guys to the game, I can see why UNT is such a tough sell. These fans are spoiled Metro Plex band waggoners who are looking for any excuse to get on or off the program.

If TCU can't do it (after all its past success and awesome facilities) how is UNT going to do it? Unless UNT finds another Mark Cuban, it won't happen. (be the next Boise State)

I feel it's somewhat hopeless saying this to someone who makes two words out of "Metroplex" and "bandwagoner" (granted, there's some historical basis for two "g's" in that), but you seem to be hearing something I was not (projection?). Why should we be more than North Texas, because you never were? We ARE North Texas; although I suppose "Texas State" is no longer "Southwest Texas", that was their choice, and one I hope we will not make. The directional prefix appeals to the geographer in me, seems accurate, and "North Texas" is the name of a school that is great in many ways.
