You don't care what classification is making plays, but underclassman must be in the 2 deep? I am interested in the level of competition for the starting position. Did we move a DT to DE because our options at that position is poor and now we may burn a red shirt on a undersized freshman? Like most schools we will be challenged to recruit DL so we better develop them with a red shirt and a 5 year program.

Not must. A senior laden team of studs year in and year out is ideal and fantasy. When underclassmen start making noise on gameday rather in rahrah coach speak we will then know recruiting has taken a step up. We need that step defensively, desperately. Until then, tighten your seatbelt and hope a Jeff Wilson-less offense can lead this team to a winning season. I don't doubt winning, I just doubt winning comfortably in this current format. And given that, a sliver of doubt does linger.

What would be considered a step up? Is starting as a Jr or Sr considered a good recruit. I know all want fresh and sophomores starting because of better talent. What if a player is in the rotation as a Jr but isn’t a starter till a Sr. Fusche would be an example! Is that considered a successful recruit?

When there is rarely an underclassmen maneuvering past an upperclassmen on the 2-deep....That's a problem. I mean, until there is significant progress on defense it's a problem regardless of the 2-deep. I don't care if 8th graders are out there making stops as long as stops are taking place. And significant IMO would be for the defense to crack the 20's in PPG. It's a stepping stone and one I would like to see take place in 2018.

If we can turn into the Leach Tech (consistently win 8-10 games) then i will live with a few defensive struggles.

No doubt. But we are more so Coach Bro Tech than Leach Tech. Leach's Tech teams could go swing for swing in spite of their defense in most seasons. Coach Bro's Tech teams get manhandled at the LOS on both sides of the ball against average and above average teams 10 out of 10 times thus almost always losing those games.

The defense is a big concern, but I have a tough time looking at the staff and killing them over it. Both sides were in bad shape when they got here and they prioritized offense over defense. If we continue to prioritize offense and let the defense suffer from here, then I can take the staff to task over it. Given the recent results, I am willing to give them a little leeway to continue to build and improve. They built and offense from nothing in a very short time, and defense can be more difficult to recruit to given the scarcity of players in those positions. Success on the field should allow us to get more of the higher quality defensive guys.

Agreed. They have earned leeway. But in the same token, they are playing with fire a bit by not legitimately addressing blatant issues with the defense. I just don't think we can win another 5 or 6 1 possession games in 2018. I hope we do, but bounces typically don't always fall in your favor like that over the span of an entire season very often.

This was always the rub on Mike Leach's teams at Tech or Briles' teams at Baylor. Just never focused much on defense, only on offensive talent. They would have huge OLinemen, great skill players, but their defense was running out some lackluster talent. So when they played tams that had better talent on both sides of the ball, it generally turned into a massacre (see Tech's epic beatdown at OU in 2008) or just losing a huge lead late (see Baylor's epic meltdown in the Cotton Bowl against Michigan State in 2014)

Agreed. We are literally turning into Tech.

I still don't see a "one possession defense."   In 2002 we had a one possession defense, and in 2013 we had a one possession defense.

If either of those teams' offenses could get you ahead by one possession to start the 4th quarter, it was lights out.   I still see a "three possession defense."

Agreed. This is a defense that will continue to struggle. And at this point the blame has to fall on this staff. It was an issue on the roster when they took over and they have done minimal to shore it up. I have no reason to believe that this defense will not allow 35 ppg a second year straight.

    No, it really doesn't...

Your never-ending wrong hot takes isn't a point that stands? You weren't wrong about the BOR never letting go of RV? Or of Dan McCarney being here until at least 2019? Because of, like you stated at least 100 times, budget?  I think that point stands pretty solidly. But...As you were.

Would really like to get CSU on our schedule maybe a 1-1. How much better is the MWC to C-USA? Based on these facilities it looks a whole lot better. It is tough being a tweener.

A 1-1 with CSU would be a great series, IMO.

Anyway, CSU, like UH, Cincy, UCF, and USF, don’t bring anything to the P5–soon to be P4–table...nothing—especially to the PAC-12, which needs TV sets, of which CSU delivers nothing extra.

CSU is in a much better league than us, so they have extra money for stuff like the locker room and meeting rooms, I’m hoping that this trend of improving athletics here will get us an invite there one day. I’d love to be in a conference with CSU...and they have a much better chance of that occurring than they do of being in a Power League.

Realignment is about TV markets, revenue sports, and academic ranking. Most people know this, but maybe it hasn’t reached the prestigious manager’s office of a dental practice in Denton...

    The point still stands.

    Yeah @untjim1995.  You're totally wrong!!!!1!

Not totally wrong. Too difficult to tell. Probable? Oh yeah.

@untjim1995 is one that loves to state his posts verbatim over and over of things that he thinks will NEVER happen. Then when the impossible to Jim takes place he acts befuddled. I think this hot take of his falls into the same category. Realignment will take place, that is not debatable. Colorado State is at the apex (with a few other schools) of the pecking order.

There is no way the PAC-12 will take them. They want TV markets, which they already have the one CSU delivers with Colorado being in their league.

CSU is like UH or Cincinnati—solid programs that could be Power teams but they can’t find a league to take them, so they are just stuck in the G5, albeit the Upper end of that level.

And if we'd listen to you, RV would still be the AD and McCarney would have just wrapped up another losing season.

    We'll see.

The audit of the current state of the Athletic Department when he was let go.  Not a summary of his entire tenure.
Just about everyone, including folks from the fabled "17", agreed it was time for him to go.  That cannot be argued.

However, IMO, I hope the Athletics Center is named after him because everything that came up over there was because of him.  It's not perfect, but it's the reason why we're not still stuck in the SBC.

Your are correct.  Baker got the liberty Christian campus done, got the stadium built, hired Littrell, Mitchell, stracke, kee, llama, hedlund....convinced Ernie to get on board, on boarded Westheimer for the golf practice facility......

it was time for r.v. to go, but don’t constantly call people who donated millions to move this thing along, and are still donating millions to keep it moving idiots.  It’s old and tired two years down the road.

Some of this is phantom credit and you know it.

  13. Yeah...it has certainly been enjoyable. Just the enjoyment of competitiveness is a breath of fresh air, winning aside. This basketball team were plays away from being a 26 or 27 win team with all of their nailbiting losses. It's unbelievable. Football program needs to take a page from the bball team and learn about competing through your losses. Either way, both programs look to be setup for multiple more years of success.

Hopefully each program can bottle the momentum throughout the off season and unleash it on Sep 1.

Just so we are clear for those being critical, if a job was open that would pay anywhere form 200%-350% more than you currently make, you wouldn't want to talk about it? Honestly, I'd question a coach who didn't want to discuss it. That doesn't mean he'd take it. Doesn't mean a coach wouldn't use it for leverage to get more money from UNT. Being critical of a Coach for looking at a job universally held as a top 10-15 football job at a school with a top 10 budget makes no sense.

SL takes Washington State or GM takes Rutgers, I'm pissed. SL takes Tennessee or GM takes Arizona State, I'm going to say good for them. Next man up. Despite a batshit crazy fan base, UT-Knox is still a top 10 FB job in most people's eyes. His agents should have been pushing him or he should fire his agents.

I have no arguments for this. My only grudge is saying one thing and acting on another. It's a part of the business and there is no way around that when you're a lower tiered school on the financial totem pole. Just don't piss on me and tell me it's raining.

I have no doubt in my mind Littrell has UNT's best interest in mind right now.   He's not kicking the can with the scholarship fiasco he inherited.  He's slowly rectifying it.   He could just keep Blueshirting the heck out of guys to get his roster up to size, give himself the best chance to win, then get out of town at the first opportunityHe's not doing that.   I believe everything he says about "Mean Green Family" and whatnot.   These are his guys.

I also have no doubt in my mind he's looking to move up to a P5.  His track record speaks for itself.   He's only loyal to UNT until a P5 job opens up.
I understand that.   Guys like Bobby Bowden, Bill Snyder & Gary Patterson are not easy to find.
Littrell is a competitor.  He wants to be the best.   The only way to be the best is to win a National Championship... and you can't do that unless you're at a P5 school with $$$$ to blow.   UNT is nowhere near that kind of school.

I'm sure Urban Meyer looks back fondly on his time at BGSU, and everything he said/did while there was genuine.  But if he remained there, he wouldn't have multiple National Championships.

  16. This is no surprise and this goes against just about everything Littrell says from a standpoint of loyalty, growth, building it the right way, etc. etc. etc. He says these things while trying to back door himself out of town. These coaches, administrators, presidents, etc. can put on green t-shirts, but they don't have green blood and that is why I am quick to pull the trigger on critical comments when the situation presents itself of worthy criticism...Because of articles just like this one.

Full disclosure: I am thankful for everything Baker, Littrell, and McCasland has done for our programs. But I take their rah-rah talk with a huge grain of salt, as we all should.
