I don't like playing Liberty period.  I think they are a rising program, looking for a g5 upset win they can use to catapult themselves.  I think our decision to play them was likely financial, in that they threw some dough for us to come to their place in the 1st game.  This game makes me nervous.  They are going to be extremely fired up.   They beat Baylor just a year ago and cancelled classes they were so excited about it.

Which would make a little better sense, but was not the case. The naysayers need to just come full circle and agree this was a piss poor decision. I'm getting tired of bitching about this particular topic, but don't worry, not in general.

i'm not sure, but it seems like some of the dislike is caused by personal and/or political opinions of liberty university.

For some, probably so. For me personally, not at all. I just don't want to see the D1 FBS program that I follow closely and that is trying to garner attention and respect agree to travel thousands of miles to a FCS transitional team. It's not a good look. In my mind, a good analogy would be for Texas A&M or UT to agree to a 1 on 1 with us. There would be ESPN/media and fan outrage.

  3. We could* have a 10-2 offense with a probable 4-8 defense. There is no telling how this season progresses. If we get good situational defense from our defensive guys, we could string together a good run in the season and end with a good record. If we get consistent 3-9/4-8 play from our defense, then there will be a lot of games like last year. So to have another good 9 or 10 win season, we will be banking on winning 5-7 1 score games.

*We haven't seen an off season of preparation without Jeff Wilson. We all know what the offense has looked like without Jeff, but that was on short notice and preparation. I am eager to see what a Wilson-less offense looks like. Not really what it looks like, because I expect a lot of the same concepts, but see if there will be continued offensive continuity and success.

Don’t know how new, but observation confirms it is pretty much the norm now in most HS...and colleges.  Make the team...get a letter. Ever notice how many drill team and cheer team members lots of HS have these days as well?

Yeah, my HS were quarters played. And that wasn't too far back, 2002-2005. I think 1/4 of the season was the measuring stick in its totality. Maybe the change has been due to coaches not wanting to track it or the trophy for everyone society leaking in.

Just keep doing what we're doing.  The next time a coach leaves or is fired, don't completely pull a 180 philosophically with the direction of the program like we always seemed to do under RV.  Keep building onto what they are building now.  For the 10 years after DD we were constantly in a cycle of trying to fit square pegs into round holes on both of our lines.  Keep some continuity going so we can get to a point where our lines are mostly upperclassmen who've had years to develop.  The very best teams we've had in my 20+ years following UNT always had experience on the lines.  Its the best way to have a fighting chance to upset a P5 AND to win in conference.

Same thing goes in basketball.  Until they do away with the one and done rule, the best way for G5s to compete with the blue blood programs is to beat them with well oiled, experienced teams.

So, I guess the program I always admired the most was Southern Miss football from the 90s - the 00s.  They did the whole "more with less" thing better than anyone.  I think if we had a run today like they did back then we could go a long way to changing the perception around our programs.  Sustained success here, with our huge alumni base, enrollment and location has the potential to really bring in game changing dollars.

Right now we're always playing second fiddle to smu in conference positioning.  Every realignment scenario depends on them leaving so we can fill in the "metroplex" spot in the next conference up the ladder.  We have to get to a point where we can turn the tables on that if we ever want UNT to get to where we all know it can go.  A UNT football or basketball program that legitimately operated at the same budget levels as their smu counterparts could not be ignored.  I don't think they could compete with us if we ever got to that point.  Accomplish this and I think the top of the G5 is a given, if not more.

This is golden advice that can't be ignored, and under this admin more than likely won't be.

Purely in terms of scheduling, the garbage win addition of Liberty is outweighed by the additions of Houston, Cal, Memphis, and Wyoming so I guess for me it makes up for it.

And Texas Tech. Scheduling has improved and there is no denying that. So it just makes Liberty seem that mucg more of a blunder given the trajectory of progress in terms of scheduling.

To note, the ACC, MWC, and the AAC has an opponent on their schedule they have to prepare for each year that runs the option. So this isn't an exclusive problem to UNT, so the woe is me can be removed from the narrative. Not saying it's coming from you Aldo.

  7. Let's not get into the business of running fans off.

WB did what he thought was right by his coaching staff. I don't agree with it for he should be doing what is right by the fan base. As I've said again and again, coaches come and go. The fans are here to stay...In theory.

I get the thought process, just not the details in the execution. And people have the right to bitch about it. He raised ticket prices and added Liberty. Yes, he added UH too, but why not nix Army and buy an additional W at home. Accomplishes the same thing without having to travel to FCS Lynchburg, at all costs to us at that. Buy a FCS W, keep LU travel costs in our pocket and have gate and concessions to boot x 2. At worse, schedule the 1 and 1 with LU but at least get travel costs from LU in the negotiations.

I think UNT's issue right now is that while there are certainly some top notch programs, they are not all top notch across the board.  UNT is still on the board for my daughter, but she's telling me flat out that she wants, and I quote, "More difficult classes."

She's leaning toward engineering, and she's not finding much substance there at UNT yet.

Granted, she'll only be in sophomore classes this coming year, and I always maintain the first two years are pretty much the same whether you go to Cisco Jr. College or Harvard.

I don't know what the reality is vs. perception for her case, and I think that's a big part of the problem.  It's impossible for me to ferret out the facts.

It's absolute perception. Has she taken engineering classes at UNT yet? If not, what is this lack of substance she is referring to? Or the minimal difficulty? Just seems like an extreme perceptionally based opinion that was formed by chitter chatter than experience. If she has taken these courses and is underwhelmed, I digress.

Have you not realized this staff prefers JUCO DL? Typically those guys don't get the ratings and attention as high school guys unless they're sec level guys.

Yes, that is trendy of this staff. And I don't hate that approach. The only* problem with that approach, and a detrimental one, is that it creates 0 margin for error on getting the guys that you want/need and them having actual success.

One positive in this regard, this staff has been able to bring in contributing juco/transfer players with way, way, way more success than the McCarney staff.

*The other problem is the cycle it creates and the minimal amount of development and depth that goes void. It also sets up our successor with an annoying and valid excuse from the jump.

I agree that D-line has to be a priority. A lot of games can be won with a good offense, but even more can be won with good offense and moderate to good defense. With that being said. This class also needs a really good QB (Chase Griffin perhaps) because a DL guy recruited this year is likely 2 years away from playing/starting.

A highly touted DL can steal snaps day 1 away from that group right now.

I mean this class so far is doing fairly well.

Garrison Johnson was offered by 4 P5 teams (Virginia, Nebraska, Syracuse, & Indiana) & 3 other G5 programs (UTSA, SMU, & South Alabama). That seems like a pretty good get.

Damon Ward was offered by 4 other G5 programs (ULM, NMSU, Southern Miss, & UTEP).

Both of these guys are rated as 3*, and not just barely 3* but solidly 3* guys. I agree that recruiting could definitely have been better last year, but this class is definitely looking better.

Well that's great. I just started clicking on the top 7 or 8 recruit threads and as usual saw commits to everywhere except us. This staff has to go all in on the defensive line this class. Find your guys that you want and go all out on recruiting that single position group. We need it because we have to have it.

You are completely delusional if you think a kid that has a legit offer from OU that he will pick UNT over OU.  IDC if the best recruiter in America was here... how many times have you seen a big time kid stay home? I can think of an Ed Oliver once in a blue moon.  It just doesn't happen often.  FIU landed 2 pretty big time kids, no idea who was actively recruiting them or what there story is.  Bottom line is, we haven't proven squat except offensive progress under Littrell and winning more games each season. Our facilities leave ALOT to be desired the only thing the coaches can sell is their relationships and experience.  Be nice when athletic complex is done and we have more selling points than Apogee.

I don't expect a guy to come here with an OU scholarship offer.

I expect us to not lose 8 or 9 out of every 10 recruits to smu though. I expect, going into class 4, to not be banking on FCS offer guys as our basically only sure things. I expect to childs play Texas State for whoever we want and to be competitive at minimum with La Tech on the recruiting trail.

We didn’t get ‘ghosted’ by several guys in this last class, including dudes who were recruited early & had P5 offers.

I see what you’re saying, & there’s some merit there... but there’s also proof in the pudding, so I’m not gonna panic.

Not panicing at all. Just frustrated that there is seemingly NEVER recruiting momentum in this program. It's always sputtering to the finish line counting on our best guys coming in after their other offers dry up. Now that there is an early signing period these summer months become more important.

9-5 West Champs and Conference Offensive MVP! How many all conf players to watch for this year? 3 yrs ago you had something to bitch about now you got nothing but what if’s and how they have to be negative! You can’t even enjoy winning it is not in your pathetic DNA!

To each it's own. Be celebratory in a 5 loss season. I will look as to why we lost 5 and had 5 more we easily could've shit the bed in and very well may in 2018. And the reason, 114th of 129, defensively.

And you sit there in your shit staind underwear acting as if the bitching 3 yrs wasn't warranted or something. If being an apologist is your thing as it clearly seems to be, then so be it.

The lack of young defensive lineman on the roster is concerning. Hopefully they will oversign in the next class.

    FR- Leblanc/Shaw

    RS FR- 0

    SO- Dion Novil

    RS SO- 0

Concerning is an egregious understatement. We are going to be a defensive joke. Seth Littrell would be an absolute perfect fit in Lubbock.
