I'm actually surprised by several things, related to the alumni base map:
1) That A&M has the second-largest alumni base in D/FW.
2) That OU didn't crack the top 5 in D/FW.
3) That Rice's alumni base made the top 5 in Houston.
4) That LSU didn't make the top 5 in Houston.
Actually, these two do not surprise me that much at all.
I run into a TON of Aggies around here. I meet far more Aggie grads than I do UT t-shirt fans.
And as for OU, there are far more OU t-shirt fans hanging around here than there are actual grads of the school. (again, just based on the number of people I run in to) In fact, I'd venture to say I've run into more OU t-shirt fans than Texas t-shirt fans.

I'm pretty sure "it" just moved a little bit . . .

It's pretty easy for me. Greer, just by his last name alone should be the choice of any self-respecting Texan . . .
He'd wear the number 29 if he knows what's good for him, too.

Next Saturday, the team will take the field at DKR Memorial Stadium and RV will look through his binoculars at our new (and improved, mind you) helmets, confused.
He'll look over at Hank Dickenson, Mike Ashbaugh, Eric Capper and the other crapload of associate/assitant/deputy ADs we have and ask them who the Longhorns are playing and why they're not at the North Texas game.

holy crap... Stevie Franchise is a UNT fan? I always wondered what happened to him when he left the Rockets
Well, I'm a 5' 10" white dude and have about a 7" vertical . . . but I'm deadly from outside. Seriously, I can hit some long distance shots. But my inside game is tuh-ruble.
-
I'm on board with it. It certainly makes a better helmet logo than words in Times New Roman or Calligraphy.

Let's say an optimistic 8-5 after a bowl victory. I'm feeling cautiously optimistic.

Serious question guys . . . who is "Fran Tarkington?"

I'm not sure. I adopted him because that's a throw-back Big 10 TE/H-back name if I've ever seen one.
I swear I remember him catching 30 passes from Todd Collins back in '93.
Well, he's listed as being from Denton, and Jaskulske a pretty uncommon last name. Based on that and the bit of resemblance I see, I'm pretty sure he's her son.

Harry, please change my adopted player to TE #44 Kyle Jaskulske.
Dude, is that Prof. Jaskulske's kid (RTVF Senior Lecturer/Advisor)? That's awesome.

I'm pretty sure that game was played in Austin, the next week. It was at Columbus in 2005. Because it was VY on the way to the Rose Bowl.
You're correct.
-
All the more reason to issue a butt-whoopin' in Austin on 8/30. I've never wanted to see us win so badly.
Well, I did want us to win the Heart of Dallas Bowl pretty badly but still. This is different.

Because beer is a perishable product. That's the whole reason that IPA exists. It was a preservation thing long before it was a fedora and black horned rim glasses thing.
I know, but saying "Yes sir, I agree" wouldn't have been as funny.

Then why does a beer that's been in my fridge for a couple of weeks start to taste like the can?
Wait, I may have answered my own question -- Drink ALL the beer within a couple of weeks so that this doesn't happen.
I'd better get to work, fellas!

Always the optimist.
And yes, they think they want to separate. Once teams that are used to having a bowl qualifying season by scheduling teams from the G5 and FCS start having losing records, losing fans, firing coaches, and declining programs, there will be less appetite to schedule this way. Sure, Alabama says that this is great, but what do Wake Forrest, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and other mid to low tier P5 schools think about this? Those are the schools that will become the whipping boys of a break away that would get beat down to the point where they cannot compete. They still get a vote. They see dollar signs now, but would their fan bases survive the one and two win seasons that are likely to come their way when they cannot schedule games they can win out of conference?
Here's the dirty little secret, or at least my theory: The "BIG" P5 schools (the ones that are almost always on top of the P5 standings) don't care one bit about this. In fact, they kind of like it because they're going to turn those same "little" P5 schools into their annual whipping boys. All they really care about is that they have the numbers going with them in favor of separating so that it will happen.
The Texas and Alabamas of the world want the Texas Techs and the Vanderbilts to blindly follow them so that they can turn them into the schedule-fillers that they have now.
The schools that are tagging along are simply being used.
-
I'm not saying we can have only one "main" rival, I'm saying we're the Texas Tech of the non-P5 world: we have several rivals and none of them consider it as big a rivalry as we do.
I wasn't really directing that at you, per se. It was more about the ruling out of other schools that already have a rivalry.
I think Tech is a good comparison. Although Texas REALLY started hating them there for a while during the Leach years.
-
Never mind that Snyder makes millions, himself.
-
Does a school have to be limited to just one rivalry? I mean Notre Dame has several (USC, Michigan State, Navy, Purdue, Boston College, Stanford, Army and PIttsburgh) and until A&M bolted for the SEC, Texas had A&M and Oklahoma.
I personally consider SMU a rival just because of proximity. I don't care that SMU already has one with TCU. I still consider them our "closest" rival.
Now, if you were to say we could only have one "main" rival, well that's different point entirely.
-
I agree. This time last year there were 4 players on the preseason CUSA all conf candidate list. Z orr, lemon, ybarbo, and Whitfield.
This year we have 9. Ybarbo, lemon, Kirby, Johnson, akunne, jjones, buyers, lee, and macek.
5 of these players already made all cusa last year.
Dang, you guys are making me re-think my 7-5 prediction!! I wanna say 8-4 or even 9-3 just because of that but I'm going to remain conservative and keep my 7-5. But just know that I definitely think this team is capable of running the table. While I don't see that happening, I'd be less surprised than those outside our program would be.
-
Will our beatdown of the Longhorns be carried live on Mean Green All-Access? I ask because I have DirecTV and they don't carry the Longhorn Network.
-
I'm honestly hoping for 7-5 or better.
Yes, we lost a lot of starters from last season, but it's not like we're replacing every one of them with inexperienced players. As has been pointed out, aside from QB, Coach Mac did a lot of rotating our guys in and out of games last season to keep everyone fresh and get them some experience at the same time. I think that's going to give us depth this year and help this team be a little more well-conditioned than last year. I also believe that Coach Mac's attitude and ability to push our guys brings a lot of intangibles to the table for us.
It's partly on us as fans to show up even better than we did last season and fill Apogee a few times this season.
Man, I can't wait for kickoff on August 30th. It cannot get here soon enough. Beat Texsa, Hit 6, Hit30k, Fill Apogee and GO MEAN GREEN!!!

UNT green brigade band debate
in Mean Green Football
Posted · Edited by TheFranchise
As a former marching band person in high school, I can tell you that this would drastically change the halftime show because there would be gaps in the formations.
However, if you don't care about the halftime show and just want a "presence" in the stands, then sending a smaller group makes absolute sense. But then you have to decide who can make it or not.
Personally, as a department I'd try and split the cost with the students interested in traveling or just make them foot their own bill to go.
"You wanna travel to Austin with the band? Ok, for your ticket and room & board it's going to cost about $250. We'll pay $125 if you can come up with the other half."
Now of course, in that scenario you run the risk of having like 20 saxes (it's a known fact that all male sax players are sports fans, so every dude that plays the sax will want to go) 14 trombones, eight trumpets, six tubas and about four clarinets making it to the game.
So if a band of about 52 excites you, then cool.
EDIT -- forgot the drum line. You can guarantee almost all of them would want to go because all drum-liners like to party so Austin is a no-brainer for them.
So let's say a band of about 75 or so.
