  1. Better ice that knee Ben.

Don't worry. I am willing to bet Ben knows a lot about strength and conditioning and could rehab his own knee quite nicely, knee-jerks notwithstanding.

I bet if you asked him, he probably knows the perfect training program that could convert Trevor Moore into playing shape to be a linebacker.

    Let's just hire Ben.

  2. That's $35 per semester...

According to this article: http://www.oaoa.com/news/education/utpb/article_d560a3d4-baa2-11e3-8ad7-001a4bcf6878.html, the fee already in place was estimated at $180 per semester for students (roughly $15 per credit hour based on 12 hours) and is being raised an additional $35 per semester (or a shade less than $3 per hour for 12 hours). So, they've actually approved what amounts to an estimated fee of $18 per credit hour.

And technically, it's a fee that was already being paid anyway so there's really no change for the students.

  3. I don't care how good their roster looks, if a head coach isn't signing at least one solid QB recruit every season, they're failing. I'd much rather have a stable of guys that could start at most G6 programs across the country than try to count on one guy as your be-all, end-all and two-to-three spares backing him up.

  4. This team stopped trying after UAB. It's the elephant that a lot of us seem to keep missing. Anyone can think whatever they want about WHY that is because I think it would be inappropriate for me to share MY opinions.

Watch an episode of beyond the green after Ohio or Tulane last year then watch the energy of the locker room on this year's episode vs. FAU if you need proof. IT is NIGHT and DAY.

ITS. NOT. RECRUITS. Our freshman.... are bad ass. Ask any of our players about the quality and potential of the freshman and red shirt freshman/sophomore class.

Well, "little SSP" did start his first career game against UAB . . . :whistling1:

But in all seriousness, based on what you've said I have some theories.

  5. I am officially announcing my candidacy for the Defensive Coordinator position at the University of North Texas. If you vote for me, I will make all your wildest dreams come true.

Part of my platform is that I promise to only contribute half of my campaign funds into negative ads and mudslinging. The other half of my campaign donations will go to party burritos and tacos from Taco Bueno. Of which, I will then make an agreement with Taco Bueno that for everyone in attendance will get a free taco or burrito from Taco Bueno if we win by more than 1 point.

We do get voted into these positions by the fans right?

I really miss Taco Bueno. They don't have that junk in Boise.

Your mudslinging practically writes itself. Imagine ending your campaign ads like this:

" . . . Of which, I will then make an agreement with Taco Bueno that for everyone in attendance will get a free taco or burrito from Taco Bueno if we win by more than 1 point. And we as Texans all know the only people that don't like tacos are yankees . . . and *insert opponent name* is anti-taco. You do the math."

Then sign off with "I'm Travis and I approve this message" or somesuch.

  6. Damn, that is a solid platform.

You could always run as an independent or on the Green Party.

I don't know if you'd run well against a "Green" candidate, though. I think the deck would be stacked against you what with the team nickname and then the puns about being a "green" campus. You'd be better off if he ran as an independent.

  7. I look at their OOC schedules and think, they balanced out their games with a FCS team or lower-level SBC team with games against a bunch of P5 schools and BYU. And, yes, I'd consider a game at JerryWorld, in the same county as their campus, as a home game. But we have to remember that TCU had several advantages over us at that time when they were a non-AQ team. First, they were damn good, as in ranked a lot of the time, meaning that having them on the schedule helped your team a lot, win or lose. Secondly, fans of other schools didn't mind their schools scheduling them, unlike what we have dealt with most of the old SWC teams over the decades. Third, we played in an absolute toilet of a stadium, so many teams weren't even willing to consider playing at Fouts, unlike at Amon Carter.

All of the above was supposed to be solved by Apogee being built. The SMU and Army series are fine, but they shouldn't be treated as your top home game in OOC. But here, they are, almost because they have to be. The P5 giant ass-kicking and paycheck game causes this. Again, I understand if that is just a financial issue we have to deal with. But I'd rather us do what we are doing in 2015 and play two road games at a P5 giant than to host Nicholls State or Incarnate Word here. What should be absolutely unacceptable is to have another 2012 type schedule, where you play only one OOC home game and its Texas Southern. I'll take a five game home schedule against FBS teams than a 6 game schedule that includes a FCS school that won't bring 25 people to Apogee. Only Grambling, SFA, and SHSU should be considered for this type of game here, in my opinion. But the one thing that is becoming more clear to me is that I am in the minority on this issue on gmg.com.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with anyone in particular on here. I was just simply pointing out that TCU never really stopped playing the FCS teams. They took a break from it for a while, but picked it up again. That never hurt their credibility.

They also didn't really have a "program-defining win" until 2005 vs. Oklahoma, a game where the Sooners were favored by 25, had not lost a home game in seven years, and were coming off a national title game appearance. Speaking of Oklahoma, I found something interesting in my research as I dug further.

TCU actually got Oklahoma to come to Fort Worth in 1998, the year they beat USC in the Sun Bowl. They lost 10-9 to the Sooners that night at home.

Like I said, I really see both sides of the argument here.

Personally though, I don't mind playing FCS teams because we just need to amass wins. That's what teams like TCU and Boise did. When they started winning the money games on the road, that's when people took notice and that's when scheduling became easier for them.

But I'm not gonna lie: It would be dang sexy to get a big-name team to come to Apogee and we give them a heck of a game. But until I'm comfortable that we can give them a heck of a game, I have to remember that getting pounded at home would be even further embarrassing than it happening on the road.

And the teams I posted that TCU played during that span does point to what many (myself included) feel, is that it's not that we're even asking for a team like Alabama or A&M to come in here, we just want someone that people would actually KNOW and we have a great chance of beating from a P5.

I'd start looking in the Pac-12 since they would love some Texas exposure and ask a team like Colorado, who used to play here regularly in the Big XII. I'd also consider either Washington, Washington State or even Utah.

I'd then shift to the B1G and ask Northwestern. As I posted before, they played TCU a lot and I'm willing to bet would do a home-and-home with us. (Not to mention it would be a battle of two great film schools :) ) I also think Illinois would be doable as well.

In the ACC, I'm thinking a Syracuse or Virginia would be a great grab. I especially point out Virginia since W. Virginia is one of their closest rivals and they're in DFW every other year.

And then just for grins, I'd still love to see some G5 teams like Boise St., Memphis, Cincinnati or Houston and then of course the one G5 coming to Apogee that would just make too dang much sense . . . Colorado St. Who wouldn't love to finally see a New Orleans Bowl re-match!?

    Okay, I've rambled enough . . .

  8. There simply is no explanation to it outside of that the AD wants it this way. As you mentioned and we all heard from the podcast, he would rather it be this way so we can get money.

I recall Gene Stallings saying that we will not be successful until we quit playing money games and simply bite the bullet. He mentioned that the payoff would come in the long run. Hell, it worked for BSU, TCU, ECU, Marshall, etc etc.

I like the AD for working to change the culture here at UNT. And he has done more than any of the AD's before him. But, I am really torn about my satisfaction of him on the job for scheduling. It seems pathetic. I would at least like to see us with some home and homes with New Mexico, ULM, La-La, New Mexico State, Texas State, Tulsa, Air Force, CSU, Arkansas State, Memphis, Tulane, etc if we can't get the bigger schools to come play. Is that so much to ask?

People seem to forget really quickly that TCU played Cal-Davis in '06, Stephen F. Austin in '08, Texas State in '09 (FCS at the time), Tennesee Tech in '10 and Portland State in '11. I won't bother to go beyond '11 simply because they became P5 after that.

It should also be noted that the Horned Frogs' OOC home schedule looked like this from '02-'11:

    2002: SMU (3-9), UNT (8-5)

    2003: Navy (8-5), Vanderbilt (2-10)

    2004: Northwestern (6-6), SMU (3-8)

2005: Army (4-7) -- it should also be noted that TCU only played 11 games in '05 and only had 5 home games

2006: Cal-Davis, Texas Tech (8-5) -- I'll point out here that the Tech game was TCU's first home sellout since 1984

    2007: Baylor (3-9), SMU (1-11)

    2008: Stephen F. Austin, Stanford (5-7)

2009: Texas State, SMU (8-5) -- I'll point out here that the Utah game this season was the second TCU home sellout since 1984

2010: Tennessee Tech, Baylor (7-6) -- TCU also played Oregon St. at Jerry World, but that was treated as a "road" game. Also, TCU got sellouts 3 and 4 this season in the games against Baylor and Air Force

2011: Louisiana-Monroe (4-8), Portland State -- There was also a Jerry World OOC game against BYU that actually was treated as a "home" game.

My real point is: They had some big-name teams come in here and there, but for the most part they just got beatable big-conference teams in. They won those games and made a name for themselves by winning. To me it's pretty simple. Winning breeds winning and it takes patience in order to do so.

Even when they were gaining momentum and getting better, they still had their setback seasons. (2004 and 2007 to be exact)

The key was that they beat the teams that they "should have" beaten and they competed against the teams they "shouldn't have" beaten, even beating a few of them. They got thumped though, too. But they bounced back.

I honestly think for us, it's less about who we play and about HOW we play. After all . . .

  9. In the article about UNT winning the Homecoming 31-10, they list the stats in the box...but what?? yea...your right...those are the stats for FAU....RV...are you at the buffet again or looking for the next Todd Dodge ???

Let's break this down, shall we? Since someone is begging for proof-reading, I'll happily provide a little.

"In the article about UNT winning the Homecoming 31-10, they list the stats in the box...but what??

For starters, the capitalized "h" in homecoming is unnecessary. Also, who is "they?" You later mention R. V., but I doubt he's actually the writer. You also allude to mystery about whom the writer is with this first "sentence," but then later give hints that you actually know. Perhaps a mystery with revelation is what you were going for, but it's still a pretty hard plot to follow.

Also, your ellipsis should be one space apart from each other . . . just like I did there. I should add that only one question mark is necessary.

"yea...your right...those are the stats for FAU....RV...are you at the buffet again or looking for the next Todd Dodge ???"

Come on, man. You capitalize the "h" in homecoming and then don't start your next sentence with a capital letter? You can do better than that . . . and this is the second time I'll mention the ellipsis. Since someone clearly needs a lesson, here is some more reading on the subject: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/marks/ellipsis.htm

The ellipsis also indicate that you're omitting a lot of words, so I'm sure the reader is confused as to what they should insert during those breaks. They'd flow a lot better and make more sense as separate sentences.

And I'll say this one more time: It's really only necessary to type one question mark.

    Finally, your = possession, you're = "you + are."

Edit: Oh, and when abbreviating proper names, you should use a period and a space after each initial. So, it should be R. V. and not RV.

    _____

But seriously, like others have said: It's usually a student that handles a lot of the stat-work for the site and they really don't need to be called out publicly like that. Chill out and calm down. Besides, it looks to me like they've fixed it.

  10. Wish he could explain how we go from beating the same team 52-14 last to losing 30-20 with your own recruits? Red Flags anyone on the recruiting.

A loss is a loss regardless of score and how close it might have been, all about execution and the outside of the phony hold, the team did not execute enough to win. Forget the coach speak and just win.

How did we beat a team 34-7 in 2013 that had beaten us 38-21 the year before?

Was this Golden Eagles team the exact same team that they beat 52-14 last season? That's really the only valid comparison.

For starters, Nick Mullens was making his first career NCAA start in last year's game. He's improved quite a bit since then. Second, So. Miss's lead rusher in this season's game was a freshman. Then there's the fact that the Golden Eagles were win-less headed into that game last year. It may not seem like it, but your motivation headed into a game with an 0-6 record and an 18 game losing streak is quite a bit different than entering 2-4 and actually boasting a 3-4 record over your last seven.

My point is, yes . . . this season has sucked so far and has been hard to endure, but I've still got a good outlook for the future. I could be wrong, but anyone posting here could be. But I still have faith in this coaching staff. After all, last season proved that given the right group of guys, they can do it.

Not to mention, Southern Miss. recruited in the off-season too, I believe. They held spring workouts and summer camps too, I'm willing to bet. It's pretty ridiculous to expect that they didn't get better from last year to this year.

I will say I'm concerned at this point being 2-5, but I'm not sounding any alarms, yet. There's still opportunity to right this ship and if we can't, then we've got a lot to learn from towards next season.

  11. I don't think we use anyone like that currently. We just have wraps that go over the helmets. I believe these are the guys that use some kind of paint, oil & water tub that they dip the canvas (like a car rim or a helmet or anything you want "textured." They're really cool. Teams then put their decals over the texturing, so I believe this is something that ends up being more permanent on the helmet. I could be wrong though but I did see a show featuring this a few weeks ago and they were texturing car rims.

EDIT: I wrote this before the videos were added. I'll have to check those out.

  12. Kevin Wilson says North Texas will be a "tough team" and "a good challenge." He points out that the Mean Green are 2-2 on the season, but they were a bowl team a year ago that won nine games and won their bowl, and they have some solid defensive numbers. Of course, last year's accomplishments are irrelevant. This year's squad has been blown out by Texas and by Louisiana Tech, and the team's big defensive numbers have come against SMU and Nicholls State, two teams that have been outscored by a combined 475-66 this season. Pump the brakes, coach.

There are way too many run-on sentences and comma splices in there for me to take this "writer" seriously.

  13. Here's my story:

In one of my RTVF classes last week we were actually discussing online communities that we take part in. I mentioned that I'm a HUGE fan of Mean Green Athletics and then mentioned this board. There were a few "yeah"s shouted after I said athletics. And then some interested looks after I mentioned the forum. This was in a class of just 16 students, so I consider it be a pretty nice ratio. I went on to mention that I'm a huge baseball fan and really don't have a great spot to discuss that, but that UNT is getting a baseball program. That elicited an "aw, sweet" from the back of the class.

I've also noticed around the RTVF building that there's been quite a bit more UNT apparel being worn. Considering we're the "artsy" students, this is a HUGE win to me.

And like others, when walking out and about campus, I'm noticing way fewer articles of clothing from other schools.

The times, they are a changin', my friends.
