  1. I do want to caution everyone that seems to think Tulane is the weak link. It is their homecoming and they have substantially out recruited NT the last two years and were a much better ball club than NT at the end of last year. I think it will be one of the toughest CUSA games.

If they dont beat Tulane, they wont win a road game. Off of the Georgia beat down and 2 Weeks to prepare. No excuses. Unless Tulane shows they are a whole lot better than last year...How can a 2 win team all of a sudden get credit for improving the following year, but unt cant? so UNT is going to play the same way while everybody else improves? Even winless and 2 win teams? Some people act like UNT was lucky to even win 4 games last year.

  2. Glad to see Kidsy moving up the depth chart. Hopefully he represents for FBISD!

Kidsey and Davis have been rotating with the 1s and 2s. 1s in certain situations and certain looks. Its safe to assume they wont be redshirted. I assume kidsey has been playing some slot when they go 4 wide. I was told that the defense has been running a lot of nickel. buyers is going to probably be first DB off the bench. Jones is probably the nickel. As the season goes on, expect kidsey and Davis to playba lot more. They still have a lot to learn.

  3. I was so frustrated at the Troy game when he would call for a fair catch when he had about 10 yards to start running. I'm sure they coach be sure if you're going to return it but still.

And in a game you lose 14-7, anything could have made a difference. No way a special teams coach wants his team to play that way. It like no even having a special teams coach. How can you even put that on your coaching resume?

  4. If Chancellor lines up as the return man on Idaho's 1st punt, we will know that unit is doomed to be terrible again this year.

Love him as a wide out, but he has zero instincts as a punt returner.

Kidsey returned punts in high school. Give him a shot. James Jones returned in hs and maybe even juco. I also read where Erick Evans is supposed to be a specialist. No way chancellor should be back there especially coming off a broken collarbone. Hes not going to risk injury his senior year.

I keep getting this reoccurring theme with this staff. Very safe, scared to take risks, trust issues....come on.

  5. I knew the coverage was bad, but I just read on a preview that came out a few days ago that unt returned kickoffs for a 19 yard average which ranked 104. the punt return was 117. The team leader was 10 yards on 5 returns. Whaaa? Seriously? How did we win 4 games?

  6. So he's not a coach on the field? You're trying to tell me that he gets by on pure natural ability?

The results and coaching staff is saying that. Not me. An OC wants the offense to run as if they were younger and out there running it themselves. im sure the coaches wish they could put DTs brain, in Brocks head because you cant make DT more athletic.

I am basing what I wrote on a few clues from articles and interviews. Mac has not mentioned athletic ability when discussing why DT won the job, or why the QB has struggled. Not once have I heard DT improved in this area or that area from an athletic standpoint. Its all been intangibles. Less mistakes, leadership, etc. in vitos article he talked about BB leaving the pocket, knowing the offense, etc. not hard to put 2 & 2 together without them just coming out and saying it.

  7. I dont think experience is the issue. I am going to assume Brock knows the unt playbook. he has had more than enough time. Its reading defenses and making the right decision in certain situations that he will have to learn. Presnap reads.

The athlete vs smarts is pretty much a debate a lot of coaching staffs have to make, at several different positions too. Do you put the best athletes out there or the ones who knows the system and makes less mistakes? Some coaches are going to put the best athletes out there and tweak thier system.

am I saying Brock is dumb, if the other side is smart? No. that was an assumption...the way and style that he approaches the game is more athletic. He is used to his athleticism and ability to improvise to get him out of trouble. He is not a coach on the field and does not approach the game as a chess match. Its like trying to get favre to play like Peyton Manning.

Brock is going to have to approach the game differently. Im not sure if we can depend on the coaching staff to meet him half way and be creative enough to make a system and call plays where he can be used. Instead, lets turn this athlete into a pocket passer.

  8. A few weeks ago there was a discussion about QBs and picking up the offense, and I stated that Brock may just be an athlete that can throw instead if a true QB.

There has been comments since then that hints that may be the case and may be the reason he has had trouble. No one has questioned that he has the best physical tools, so its obvious UT has to do with execution. Whenever DTs positive attributes are mentioned, it has to do with intangibles like smarts, leadership, knowledge etc.

I can only conclude that Brock is not picking up the system the way the coaches want him to. He was good in a free style environment on the scout

Team, but in an organized offense he is struggling. One of the biggest problems for a playground athlete.

I have seen this happen several times on all levels with the fan base. They see an athlete that is capable of making plays and we want them in there. They show a lot more athletic ability than the starter. All we figure is if that person got a shot, they could take the job.

Most OCs want thier QB to be an extension of themselves. I dont have much info from college coaches, but im sure its the same. They want to be on the same page as thier QB and they want the QB to make the right reads and choices. Some coaches do this to a fault. The system is more important that putting the best athletes on the field. The players that knows the system will play while the dumber, but more athletic players will sit.

A good coaching staff that likes to make adjustments and try new things will find ways to get thier athletes and playmakers in the game. They will tweak things and make thier system fit the personell. From the looks of it, our coaching staff is not creative like that.

Brock is going to continue to have issues if he cannot pick up the offense. And if I had to guess, its more about reading the defense than knowing the offensive plays. Brocks improvising looks good to the casual fan, but OCs want you making the right decisions and choices. Its cool a few times, but if they dont trust your decision making, yiu wont play QB.

On the other hand, you have a good decision maker, but he only can pull it off occasionally.

I have seen it on all levels, the one that knows the system and makes the right decisions is going to play. most coaches are terrified of unpredictable QBs. They have a short memory of that outstanding ability and they do not like mental mistakes at that position. Its going to take some tweaking and creativity if we are going to ever use Brock. Either that, or he is going to have to work extra hard on reading defenses and making the right decisions.

  9. Stupid me. I keep coming back to this thread thinking it will be more info about Erick Evans.

    Me too...

I heard that Erick is possibly one of, if not the fastest backs we have. I read on here where he is a return specialist? Hopefully he can fill ar least two areas of need.

We have plenty of quality, solid backs, but we need one that is dangerous with take it to the house speed. At minimum, a change of pace back.

The scrimage is the first time hearing of him, so he may not get too far up the depth chart, but then again, he must have shown something early because he was able to play and score twice.

  10. Special teams looked below average to me. Return game was barely there the games I saw. Lots of fair catching on punt return.

Very slow team in every area from what I saw.

Im hoping we get someone that is somewhat dangerous and is willing to return kicks. James Jones, zed Evans, and other faster young players should improve special teams.

  11. We might see what Okie State did last year.

Use a vet QB between the 20's and use a duel threat QB in the Red Zone. whether it be McMuffin, Dajon or Brock-oli.

Less space for the offense to work with and DT not being a run threat limits our options.

I believe eventually DT will be phased out once we get into the season but he is our guy for now.

I would hope we could use the situational qb thing that has been sucessful for so many teams over the years, but can this staff pull that off? They seem too scary.
  12. Not trying to minimize the importance of DT, but not having a secondary is a lot bigger issue.

There are other ways to put pressure on a QB. You can also stop the run by putting 8 in the box. A weak secondary will limit what you can do though.

Not being able to play nickel is a huge issue. The biggest problem for unt was not getting off the field on 3rd downs.

Most of the DT issues I have heard did not complain about being ran on and giving up big running gains up the middle. Most complaints I have heard is due to pressuring the QB. If the defense has gotten it to 3rd and 4 or more, its up to the secondary to get them off the field.

  13. I almost forgot how bad we really were last year. Thank you

As for the defense we should be better in almost every position with the exception of DT. Unfortunately for us I think that is the most important part of the defense.

The DT position is not going to lose games. If your defense is not good, you have a lot more issues than just DT. DTs dont give up big plays. Linebackers and dbs do. DEs are the ones that break containment. DTs stop the run up the middle and collapse the pocket on passing situations. Having bad DTs can be offset if you are solid in the other areas.

To have a great or dominating defense, you have to have DTs though. We have a long way to go to get to that point. Finding a DT that can turn a whole defense around is rare in college and even in the NFL. Much easier and realistic to improve and fix other areas.

  14. Dt is the starter and I expect him to play better than last year. Hopefully he can at least get up to average. An average qb would have this team with 6 or 7 wins.

No need to panick because dt is starting the Idaho opener. we should win and dt may even look good. Ohio, ball state, and Georgia is where the true qb competition will take place fellas. This competition will go on for at least 6 more weeks.

the first 4 games will give us an indication of where we are. The comp gets easier after that and 2 Weeks to prepare for Tulane. The Qb that will possibly finish the season will roll out there for Tulane. If it is still dt, it probably means we are sitting at 2-2 with a great chance to be 3-2. If we are 1-3, we are possibly looking for a change at qb and trying to get to 2-3 with hopes if getting back on track.

I hear dajon looks good and showed a lot of running ability in the scrimmage. Just doesnt know enough. physically he is already the best qb. He just needs to learn more and get more reps.

  15. I think the defense will be the most improved. 2nd year under skladany with more depth. Just like the qb situation, the coaches did not have the trust to even run a nickel. That is crazy. surprised they even won 4 games with that limitation.

from what I gather, DB is greatly improved and there is a lot more depth. The defense will be able to play faster, be less predictable, and be a stronger unit.

  16. the qb situation will all depend on those first 4 games. we should beat idaho and i could see 2 qbs playing. Ohio is going to be tough and we possibly get knocked back down to earth. Ball State is where a QB can get a stronghold on the job. If DT can pull off and be a main reason we win the Ball State or Ohio game, then he could possibly survive the season. i'm guessing he gets the first crack at it. If we are 2-2, he may keep the job if he performed well. If we are 1-3, or 2-2, but won in spite of the QB play, there will be a change after the Georgia game. Those first 4 games will give us an indication of how the season could go.

I can see 2 QBs getting in at Georgia. Even though it will be a loss, they will be the best team we play and whatever bright spots happen in that game, it will be a building block. The competition gets a lot easier and the schedule works out pretty good for UNT.

Get TWO weeks to prepare for Tulane. If it is time to name a new starter, that is the time. with 2 weeks to prepare for a weak Tulane team. If we are 1-3, Mac goes with Dajon.

Why? because it will be a good excuse for a subpar season. 5-7 won't look so bad with an up and coming true freshman at QB. Dajon would give us enough highlights to shut us up for a season and Mac gets one last pass. It would also help with recruitment and show that he has no problems putting a young player in there.

  17. I've heard that Brock is sitting at 4th string QB right now.... And it's from a pretty good source

He was 3rd string before the dajon hype, so I can see that being the case. He's a bust yall. If he doesnt do anything outstanding tomorrow, he is done in the short term. He may possibly get another shot later, but he will be waiting his turn behind dajon and McNulty.

I predict DT, then dajon is the backup.

  18. If we are good enough to go 2-2, that means we have beaten either Ball state or Ohio. How can we not get 4 more wins against Tulane, so miss, rice, utsa, utep, and muts? Ball state and Ohio had a better season last year, and most preseason polls have ball state ahead of most of our conference schedule.

If we beat Ball State, we should have no problem getting 6 or 7 wins. Ball state is probably the toughest home opponent. Its a big home game that will show us what we are really made of.

  19. Only reason I brought up Berglund being the odd man out is I am taking Mac at his word about not redshirting Dajon. I am assuming that he plays this year then.

If Dajon is 3rd string, he could hold a clipboard, travel with the team, and be the emergency qb. Like billiesee58 said, he keeps his redshirt still unless he plays.

For Mac to say Dajon will not redshirt, I have to assume he is at minimum the backup with the possibility of starting at the end of the season. If he is 3rd string and burns his redshirt, that would be pointless. Once he touches that field, he better at least be the backup and getting some experience, or it is a waste. Cant see DT being 3rd string.
