  1. Even if it means you could lose some games to do it?

I think this is a valid question.

Good question because Mac said Dajon will not redshirt. I translate that to him getting in some games this year. How much playing time to make it worth it?

A 4-8 or 5-7 season from DT, then we may as well had a young qb in there and get ready for mext year. I agree wuth billiesee58. I cant see any other qb that brings so much less than DT, where it would factor in wins or losses.

  2. BB is not eligible for a redshirt if he doesn't play this year.

If you play one play in any game, you lose your redshirt, unless you are hurt and then you can apply for a medical redshirt.

Seems you are a bit confused about redshirt rules. Hope this helps.

Im clear about freshman redshirting. You have the exception right in your reply...didnt know what could happen if berglund quits before game 1 if he remains 3rd team. Looks like that is where he is headed.

  3. You realize that you don't burn the redshirt until he steps onto the field for a play, right? A player can suit up for every game but unless they actually go in, they maintain their redshirt.

Yeah...He can actually play in a game and still redshirt...my point, once the redshirt is gone, he will play in games. I doubt they burn the redshirt for him to hold a clipboard. Like your point, he can do that and still keep the redshirt.

If berglund doesnt play for UNT this season and sits out, does he keep that year of eligibilty?

If Berglund is 3rd on the depth chart, I expect he tries somewhere else. He came here to start. Maybe that is why they are looking at dajon. To be the backup if DT is the starter.

It will be clearer in few more Weeks, but whatever the case, I doubt they start this circus for nothing.

  4. Its too late to start wasting reps to get a point across. If you are working with the 1st and 2nd team at this point, you have a shot. I cant see them using reps on a player they will redshirt instead of using them reps to improve the other qbs. Dajon is in the mix. And if he doesnt redshirt, he will play at some point. You wont burn a redshirt like that and dont get him some work and experience in.

  5. I doubt this is a smokescreen. There has been cases where a coach has tried to get a player to step up by saying there is an open competition in pro sports, but you don't bring in a JUCO in college and open up the job, if you like the starting QB. It is very obvious that they wanted Berklund to take that job this past Spring. They were pretty much ready to hand it over, but he gave them nothing to give them a reason.

So they gave him another chance by saying it will continue to be open at the start of Fall. He had all summer to be ready and learn what he needed to learn. Still could not take the job. Now one week into the Fall Camp, and now a Freshman enters the comp. You just don't open things up like that with a senior experienced QB, if you are not trying to replace him.

I would buy the "trying to light a fire" theory if DT was lazy, but from what I read on the forum is he is a hard working, smart, and dedicated. That's probably his strongest attribute. Usually the only reason teams have a fake QB competition is to get their QB to take the job more seriously.

I would not be surprised if DT starts by default, but Dajon is the backup until he is up to speed on learning the offense. If the season goes down the drain, I would expect Dajon to play the last part of the season. If Berglund does not do something fantastic in the next few weeks and take the job, then he may never get out of the dog house. The coaches are looking foolish right now, and it is because of him. If they knew he would bust like this, I'm sure they wouldn't have ever had this open competition. Can't turn back now.

  6. Kram,

I think RV is great and has done a lot for the University....but after talking with him and hearing things here and there, I feel it primarily is his call. The Type on the helmets just looks so unprofessional. It's a great typeface, but not on the helmet. I work in branding and deal with design and logos every day. The type has it's place. The helmet should be based on iconography....a symbol. My 2 cents. ;)

I agree. If you are going to use a font on a helmet, then it should at least be a bold, sports font. Something that makes a statement. A football font should be either bold or since we are in Texas, it should remind you of Texas.

I understand being simple can also look cool and classic, like Penn state, bama, etc, but UNT did not pull it off. It looks lame.

The practice helmets that I saw with no logo, a black facemask, and 2 black stripes look simple, but cooler than the north Texas on the current helmet.

  7. Thompson is and will be the starting quarterback. Deal with it.

If he gos down, then McNulty will be the guy until further notice. You haven't heard any news because there is no news. The depth chart is already set.

    1. Thompson

    2. McNulty

    3. Berglund

    4. Williams (RS)

Whats the qb situation at UH? Im a Coog, but now I am following both UH and UNT. Very similar sitations in my opinion. Piland is not good. Most fans want a change. I dont see why you come on this forum and try to get people riled up.

A UNT fan can easily go on coogfans and do the same thing and say deal with it. Im on coogfans too, so I get it. It sucks over there. But because our board is dead, you wanna troll another team? didnt you attend UNT? Why hate?

  8. This is a little more recent. Two years ago Rod Lancaster only had an offer from us and was a 3 star, and Nick Schrapps only had us and an Air Force offer yet was still a 3-star.

    It is very political though.

scout and rivals look at it in tiers. Instead of just looking at the talent of the prospect, they also consider offers and other players at that position.

Lets say 2015 is a down year in high school talent for Qbs. The top schools will still go after the best of that group. The top 10 in the nation will probably be 4 star, even if they would have been a 3 star in a previous class loaded with a lot of good qbs. They have a set amount of how many can be at a certain level. A lot of the early rankings is based on demand for the player and what school they anticipate the player going to.

  9. Not sure about him as a QB but I imagine his bro comes with him. Those are two solid athletes there. Good pick up

Im sure he will decommit if txstate does not offer his brother. A Texas school that offers both should get him to switch. Monroe can play qb. He will need some work like most high school qbs, but he can run and he uses his running ability to extend plays. His spiral is wobbly, but he has a good arm. If txstate can keep him and get his brother it will be 2 solid pickups and will be the highlight of thier 2014 class.

  10. I was hoping they offered Monroe from fb bush. I watched him play for 3 years. He and his twin brother are the real deal and are legit 3 star talent. Monroe had a lot of buzz after his soph season and was very high on all 2014 lists. Could gave been a 4 star with a big season. His Jr season was not as great as expected because his wr twin brother sat out 2013 and that was his top target. His brother is just as good. Teams are waiting to see if his brother is 100%. I know the family would prefer they play in driving distance to Houston. They are both listed on Houston preseason top 100. They prefer to play together and I was hopong UNT would be the first to offer both. They worked out at the Katy camp. The wr had a good camp and was the best wr out there. It would be HUGE to get the Monroe twins.

  11. I expect a team that returns 8 starters on offense, and 8 starters on defense to play a lot better than they played the previous year. I have seen other teams projected win total get a bump for returning starters, so why not UNT?

And before people complain about the DTs, if you go to most Non BCS schools, they will have the same issue with DTs. There's not a lot of them to go around. Its also very rare a team's primary reason for losing is placed on the DT position. Not saying it's not important, but if you have a solid secondary or solid linebacking corp, you can put together a nice defense.

If we were bringing back a stud QB, we would be predicted to have at least 7 wins with so man of the other positions returning. Especially a nice O line returning.

I have noticed a common theme with McCarney and his staff and that excuse has to be eliminated this year.

The talent level has been questioned. I get it that a new staff wants a chance to recruit thier type of players for their system and the whole notion that it takes a coach to turn over the old team and way of thinking and bring in a new attitude.

I have to ask, because I really don't know. Was the talent level really that bad? I still expect a coaching staff to coach up some talent, and I find it hard to beleive they didn't have at least something to work with. Is the talent level so bad to where we could never run nickel? Come on! that's hard to beleive. It's been said that the offensive play calling was also hampered by fear. UNT barely tried to set up returns in the special teams.

At some point, you have to at least try. I don't like playing safe and playing not to lose. Players are going to make mistakes. Let them make them and get them over with, so you can move on. Try different people. Do something. Don't sit there and keep losing the same way over and over. Seems like this staff was not motivated to coach the players up and are just waiting for the better players. I find it hard to believe that the talent level was so bad to not even try something different. If it was, then Mac does need more time.

  12. ..

Is everything political to you ..??

    G

Both people made very bad decisions ... one followed when he shouldn't have and with a gun he should not had and the other apparently turned and attacked him .... and the results was a tragedy. There was no good answer to this.

As far as politics go, if you are a die hard democrat, or die hard republican it's a good chance you are not fit to have a real "discussion" about anything. The answers and the solution is neither on the left or the right wing. Its probably somewhere in the middle where a head and a brain should be. (Staying with the eagle theme)

As far as this trial goes, the prosecution made a mistake by trying to make Zimmerman look like a calculating killer that wanted to shoot a black kid that day. I agree both people made mistakes that day. Zimmerman who had a history of profiling went and started a conflict. Martin did not handle it the right way and lost his life.

The tapes and the screaming was a big focus of the trial. Who was screaming? My logic tells me it is Zimmerman. It doesn't add up that Zimmerman would be getting the best of Martin and then have to shoot him. If I had to guess, Zimmerman ran up on Martin words were exchanged. He could have possibly even grabbed Martins arm to stop him and question him. Martin gets angry and whips zimmerman. Sore loser Zimmerman shot him. I don't buy that fear for his life crap.

If Zimmerman reveals he has a gun up front, and says he is neighborhood watch, I doubt Martin fights him. Could Zimmerman have just taken the whipping without killing that dude? Probably. Easy for me to say on this forum though. Not sure if there was an opportunity for him to pull the gun and stop the fighting. All I know was he provoked a fist fight and pulled out a gun and killed him. We can come up with all kinds of scenarios, but Zimmerman killed Martin and that is a fact.

I think it was more on the side of accidental, than murder, but he should still serve time. You make a mistake, you pay for it. No way should he get off free for being the main reason the fight started in the first place.

  13. Ok, I have been somewhat of an optimist going into 2013. I am new to following UNT, and only started watching last year. Im starting to get worried now...

DT did not look good at all last year. I expected Burglund to be named starter based on some good reliable sources. Burglund got hurt or whatever, but he or McNulty couldnt take the job from a bad QB.

Are any of these QBs D1 material? Im asking. DT looks like he is not. This dude is a senior. It shouldnt take this long. Sorry, its the truth. Usually a qb brings something to the table. If they are not mobile, they usually have a rocket arm, or they have good acuracy and timing. You have some who cant throw well, but thy can run and scramble to extend plays. DT seems to have no strength, and it seems as if there is little upside. Im sure hes a great guy, but some people just dont have the physical gifts. Probably a good solid backup for most teams.

problem is, no one can clearly beat him out. come on...something doesnt add up. Can trying another qb be any worse? Its not a pass heavy offense. Is the system that hard to learn? I know this is the exception and not the rule, but Utah State threw a true freshman, Chuckie Keaton in a few years ago, and it worked out pretty good. At some point you have to put football talent on the field and see if it can win games.

If Burglund has that much upside, he should be working with the first team. Is he that slow in learning the offense? Are the coaches that scared? Who cant hand the ball off 70-80% of the time?

I will admit the Spring game had different play calling than during the season, but im still worried that they may take the safe route, like during the season. Sometimes you gotta let them hang. If you are gonna lose,.at least go out firing all bullets.

  14. My point was that teams like UT and A&M have very little interest in most 3-star talent. Therefore your argument falls flat on its face.

I stated Big 12...Baylor, tech, TCU, even Oklahoma State...they are also in the big 12. What is your point? Just to disagree with someone? My original point that you disagreed with didn't even say anything about Texas and A&m.

You went on some rant about CUSA getting 3stars, and even if that is the case, my original point still holds true without a doubt just by reading articles, looking at the actual results, and talking directly to recruits and coaches. We can even go to UNTs last class and see how tech and tcu took 2 recruits at the last minute. Once again, what's your point?

My quote, word for word before you pulled that one statement out of context....

"]UNT does not have money to waste, so they have to be careful about putting a lot of resources into a recruit. Once a recruit blows up into the 3 star range, they probably are looking big 12. UNT has to wait till some of the smoke clears before putting a lot into a recruit. Its actually good that a lot of the big 12 schools are getting commits earlier.

The original post was about recruiting and budgets. You brought up coaches looking at stars, and CUSA. Now if your stance is UNT should still go after 3 star recruits, and go toe to toe with these big 12 schools, that is another debate. Still does not make my statement false. And if you want to use other CUSA schools and their success as an example, then that is cool. It still is not an apple to apple comparison because we are in Texas, where there are more teams, where there are surrounding states that steal talent, and where there is a large big 12 following. There is a pecking order and UNT is not ready to go head to head. It has to be a strategy.

  15. That's simply not true. The top C-USA teams get plenty of 3-star recruits. And coaching staffs really don't pay much attention to how high Rivals or Scout rates a player.

And who said anything about coaching staffs paying attention to stars anyway?...my statement, the one you quoted, was about how a recruit is looking for a big 12 offer once they blow up to 3 star status. I guess I can change that to even the two stars are looking for those offers too, but the chances of them getting the offers are a lot slimmer.

I'm not going to even debate the obvious that the big 12/ AM has first dibs on 3star talent. You can argue with yourself on that.

  16. That's simply not true. The top C-USA teams get plenty of 3-star recruits. And coaching staffs really don't pay much attention to how high Rivals or Scout rates a player.

You obviously do not pay attention to recruiting or keep up with it. Get that top CUSA team stuff outta here, cause we are mainly talking about the state of Texas when it comes to UNT recruiting. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that Texas has been the dream school over the past few years. Now with the recent success of A&m, they may have taken over. Usually one of those two schools are the top choice. Oklahoma is also a top choice. Now that TCU is in the big 12, and Baylor's recent success, they, along with Tech is the next tier. It's pretty obvious if you keep up. There is a pecking order in recruiting.

You are right about the coaches not paying attention to the stars, but you are incorrect about how a recruit with the talent of a 3 star thinks. The recruits pay attention to it and they gauge themselves based on the scouting. Of course there are a few exceptions, but most of these recruits and sites make a big deal about a big 12, big 10, PAC 12, or SEC offer. I agree that other schools get 3 star recruits. Because the top schools are fighting for the elite talent first. They all are trying to get the 4 and 5 star talents. Once that has narrowed down, they are coming after the next ones down the list. There's obviously plenty of 3 star talent to go around, so to take that statement as if ALL 3 star recruits go to big 12 is just silly.
