  1. If we want to be a great program, we better get used to having to replace great players.

To do that, good players need to make the leap to great and new talent needs to be continually infused into the program. Look at guys who have made the leap since last season, Trice was ok last year, he is great now. Abbé has been "just a guy" up until this season. Suddenly he is all-conference. And DT has gone from slightly below average to pretty good.

Couldn't you see Jimmerson jumping to that Cobbs/Dunbar level next season? Carlos Harris will surely be featured more. We have a lot of depth coming back at DE: Polk, Mason, Quenton Brown and Jarrian Roberts. Sed Ellis is catching my èye at LB in his limited playing time. What talent is already on our sidelines wearing a redshirt (personally I can't wait to see Sid Moore play)? What new talent will be faxing us their signature In a few months?

The bottom line is we finally have a coach and a program that can identify talent AND develop it. I agree with Harry about next season.

PS - I can't tell if people are joking about Thompson as a first ballot Hall of Famer. He has put in a little more than a half season as an above average college QB. He is a good QB this season. He might deserve 2013 UNT Offensive MVP but calling him a Hall of Famer is ridiculous.

Great post. I can see Jim becoming a feature back and taking off with a good veteran line coming back. We can revisit this after the remaining 4 or 5 games, but if jim can make big plays against a good rice defense, he may have a strong end to this season and be the feature back next year.

Bringing back 2 corners is big with this defense. Our safeties come up and support the run a lot. I can see one of our corners making some preseason lists. If one or maybe even both of them build on what they are doing this year, it will be hard to throw on us next year.

  2. No, Brelan's loss will hurt the most. He literally flips the field when teams decide to kick to him. And he gives DT that deep threat where he can toss one up and watch Brelan take it the distance...not to mention being able to contort his body to catch some of DT's more errant throws. This is why losing the Desoto QB hurts, we NEED a guy like Brelan who can make you miss in the open field and punish you if you kick his direction.

Brelan's output at wr is replacable. He is tough and is a veteran wr, but there's kids in high school and jucos right now, that can fill his void at wr. bigger and faster too. Can we get them is the question. We need a 4.3-4.4 guy to stretch the field. Not a knock on brelan, but our offense is just not that potent. He has the talent to be a top wr in the conf.

The skill that we will miss the most is his return game. Its not easy finding a punt/kick returner. Its more than throwing a fast guy back there.

  3. But, as others have said, if we've got a dynamic QB to add to the mix that will certainly be an X-factor. Freshman QBs usually make mistakes, though. So, expectations should remain tempered...

We do not have a prolific offense right now. we are going to have an unproven qb that will make mistakes, but is that any different than what we are dealing with now? People act like DT is playing mistake free ball. If the coaching staff plays conservative because of the new qb, how is it any different than this year? We're already used to it. We already give up pick 6s. Are we gonna run even more and give up 2 ints per game? I expect at minimum, similar results from the offense, and that is not asking for a lot.

  4. It will depend on if Wallace is the real deal. If he can step in for orr the defense should not fall off. A good defense is a system, philosophy, and attitude. This defense is not driven by one beast. When you have a defense like that, its not hard to plug in a person and not have much drop off. Our biggest issues on d has been one on one coverage and I expect that to improve with 3 starting dbs returning. Trice is the vocal leader and that will be missed, but that wont stop this team from hitting hard next year.

Our offense should at least be the same. Im expecting more with a mobile qb. DT has done a good job and has proven he can play D1 football at a high level. But lets not act like our offense is the reason for this team's sucess. Losing Brelan the WR is not as big of a loss like some think it is. We really do not use him (like we could). We are going to miss his return game much more.

DT has balled and ran the ball well with some timely calls, but he is not a threat to do lots of damage. First downs and an occasional qb draw close to the red zone. Once we add a qb that can rip off huge runs in this system, the offense will be hard to deal with. If we plan on running the qb more, we will have to have TWO qbs that are ready. they will take more hits if we truly plan on doing the read option the right way.

  5. I'm afraid the QB position next year is going to be an absolute wildcard. We don't even know who it'll be, much less how well they'll perform. QB and Chancellor are our big losses on that side of the ball, and hopefully the other losses will at least be close to replaceable. The D is a more difficult story. Oh, and as far as DT is concerned, we're lucky to have him.

Qb play will be equal or better than this year. No disrespect to DT. The QBs we have should be able to build on what we have been doing. A more mobile Qb can probably do more.

At minimum, they should be able to run the same conservative game plan and we can win at least 7 games. They just need reps, need to learn the offense, and most importantly, learn to read defenses.

  6. I really don't care what they wear as long as they keep winning, but am I the only one that didn't like the black unis? I would have been good with them if they had just a bit more green, especially on the pants. I couldn't see any green whatsoever on the pants and the black SOW on the helmet was awful. You could not even make it out from the concourse directly behind the bench.

I would have preferred more green on the pants, but it probably cost more. It was easier to just go with all black pants and just custom design a Jersey.

  7. We have a run first offense. Its been that way for years. This year they tried to add a little more balance. Just a little more passing, to open up the run more.

DT is average, but the philosophy is what is keeping him average. We are a run first team, and best believe that is the way they practice. DT is not getting a lot of reps throwing the ball like prolific passing offense, but we are expecting those results if we ever need it.

We have been fortunate to get back into some games against some safe, prevent defenses by passing, but once they get settled, we end up making the mistake again.

We need to become a REAL balanced team, and not this fake balanced team if we really want to judge what our wrs and DT can do.

  8. The thread isnt about bashing DT. Its pretty much putting a senario out there if we play against a team where they force DT to beat us.

Can he pull it off? Possibly in a cusa ship or bowl game. A situation where we are playing good competition.

I have the same questions, but its more about the playcalling and adjustments.

DT has shown he can win a game if you DARE, him to beat you. He is an average QB. He's not an improviser or playmaker. He is going to run the offense. He cannot overcome predictable playcalling and if a defense has your play figured out.

  9. Marshall no. ECU yes. If we faced ECU we would not be able to run the ball very well. Ultimately the game would come down to throwing the ball. I think we could hold the ECU offense to around 24 or 25 points, not sure if our offense could generate 4 TD's against their D without help from the D or special teams.

I cant get a handle on ECU, because they havent played a lot if good comp. On offense, they pass a lot. Not sure if they are better than Ohio or ball state, but at least we have seen something similar. Tulane slowed the offense down in regulation to 19 points.

ECU hasnt really faced a run heavy team, but it seems like they will make DT beat them. If we are predictable, they will shut the run down.

  10. Mac is the one that is conservative without a doubt. He tells them to run. He is pretty safe across the board.

It is good for now, (in the future) he will eventually have to evolve if we want to reach a higher level and start getting ranked.

His style is going to be hard to recruit big time offensive talent that has dreams of going pro and putting up big numbers.

We will also need to blow teams out to impress the pollsters like Baylor is doing this year. I understand that he just wants to secure wins right now...but if we have a similar season against similar talent next year, the we will need to do more.

  11. I hope that we see a big uptick in recruiting with how this season has gone.

We should see some improvement. I would hope we could get some big time defensive players by the style of defense we play. A few JUCO D linemen would be huge. We could also use a real fast running back.

  12. I don't know about the whole 2 yard line thing, but...

I dream of us coming out for the first series, 1st and 10 ball on our own 35, and running a play action and throwing the ball deep down the sideline, or middle, or anywhere.

I promise the other team wouldn't be ready because Mac has NEVER done this at UNT.

Just once. I don't care if its intercepted. It's as good as a punt. And it lets the opposing defense know they can't play the run on every first down.

    Just once. Please.

Couldnt have said it any better

  13. We have faced better teams than Rice. We have seen and beaten better qbs and offenses than what Rice has.

The only thing that worries me is the coaching. Talent wise, I think we have more and faced more. If it comes down to creativity, adjustments, and coaching, not sure if we are able to respond in enough time to win the game.

I still think we win because of homefield and talent.

  14. Agree. I have watched a lot of Rice the last two years and we are a bad matchup for them. The things we have had problems with this year, I have not seen them be able to do. We give up big plays in the passing game, but they do not have the speed at wr nor the QB to take advantage. They go to their TEs and rbs a lot in the passing game, but we have the safeties and lbs that can shut that down. I watched UH shut it down in the second half of their game, and unt has a better defense. Unt Defense vs Rice offense is where i see the clear advantage and this is where the game should be won.

Rice is a little better on defense than some of the teams we have faced. Not as fast as Tulane though.

We will need to pass to loosen the defense up. They can play physical and stop the run. They have some decent athletes in the secondary, but they can get beat. If we are predictable, they will stuff the run. If we open the offense, we shouldn't have a problem moving the ball and scoring.
