  1. We need to and should win this game at home big. They're breaking in a freshman qb on the road and we're going against a defense that was one of the worst in the country last year and is breaking in 8 new starters. We need to score, score often, and force this kid to make mistakes.

Point is we should win this game and it shouldn't be because of the jerseys. I'm a superstitious guy, but we should expect to win this game handily no matter what.

  2. I think they are counting the initial standing as 1 get up. Thus, if you get knocked down you have now gotten up one more than you have been knocked down. Which, unless you sleep standing, technically, you did get up.

Not to get in a pointless argument with you, but they're making it sound like get up as in get up from being knocked down. As in, get up from being knocked down one more time than you get knocked down. It just sounds better than get up every time you get knocked down.
  3. Conference mate Southern Miss already has 3 national top 50 DTs committed. We've got to pick up our game to compete with that.

And they signed an absolute stud last year in Rod Crayton. He was offered by a lot of big schools based on his film but had offers taken away because teams were scared about his height and the fact that he lost half his foot in an accident, I think lawn-mowing.

    Check out this offer list

As for Strong and Gambrell, at the risk of sounding like sour grapes, I think we have better recruits that we are in the hunt for. Gambrell was offered based on size but honestly his hudl film is pretty underwhelming. He's a big time project and Strong is more of a backup plan. Hurts to lose these guys, just not that bad.

Let's focus on JT Williams from Denton Guyer.

  4. This is why it is so important that we win NOW!!! We've got a very small window in which to take advantage of all of the excitement generated by Apogee, Coach Mac, etc.

On a much smaller scale, this is similar to the situation that aTm was in last year. Their future depended on how well they showed to be competitive in the SEC. Their long term future depended on which cycle they ended up establishing, success->good recruiting->success or failure->diminished recruiting->failure. Now, aTm probably wasn't going to be a Vanderbilt, but they needed the success to not be an Ole Miss

We have one of the rare opportunities that come along to allow one of the have-not's to break out of the failure cycle an we can't afford to blow it.

    Win NOW, baby!!

Great comparison. Obviously our situation is on a smaller scale than A&M, but if we have a good year our recruiting will continue to blow up. This little recruiting hot streak we're on should show us that we have great potential, seeing that we're only beginning to tap it.

  5. Ouch...he's a good player. Hey they are going to test us. This is as big a game for them as it is for us. I just hope and pray we don't take them lightly and I don't think Mac will allow that to happen.

ALSO -- no more letting people hang around... we need to learn how to grab them by the throat early!!

Absolutely. We need to impress everyone with how fast a start we get off to. Let's get a big first quarter followed by a standing ovation at how well we're playing.
  6. Good get . If we could add Beard too , that be 1 heck of a solid foundation upfront

Absolutely. Those would be two solid guys who could project to multiple positions on the offensive line.

Don't forget about Avery Fortenberry, Aaron Fortenberry's little brother. Avery just graduated high school but iirc he was given a grayshirt offer, which means he might be part of this class at offensive line as well.

  7. Buckley, one of Idaho's best defensive players, was reinstated to their team about a week ago. Buckley is about 6'3" 300 lb at defensive tackle. He is ranked right up there with Max Forde, their junior defensive end, as the most talented player on their defense. Makes their defensive line even better and even more experienced.

Going to be a fun matchup between our o-line and their d-line.

  8. Only favored by 6? Oh ya we kinda suck too...... Well not this year. This is the year we break out. We win this by 21 or more and take the confidence it gives us into the rest of the season.

We need that. This shouldn't be a game we win by single digits. Not at home against this Idaho defense.

Heck, that performance last year against Texas Southern was a bad precursor of what was to come the rest of the year. Us scoring only 34 points against Texas Southern and being 11-24 passing makes sense for a team that averaged just 20.9 points per game.

  9. They have a redshirt freshman at qb. Name is Chad Chalich from just up the road in Couer D'Alene, one of the top programs in their state. He's maybe 6'0" and he's a dual threat who won their qb spot in the spring basically by default. They return four starting o-lineman and a fifth with some starting experience, their tight end (not much of a pass-catching threat), a couple good receivers and their backup running back return. Most of their depth at the skill positions will rely on JUCO guys.

As for their defense, their strength and experience is at defensive line. They're also pretty big on the d-line. Linebackers have no starting experience and are almost al JUCOs. Secondary has one returning starter and JUCO guys.

They were one of the worst defensive teams in the country and they only return three starters. We need to score like crazy on them. Our defensive should hold them at least under three scores and force some turnovers at home against a freshman qb.

  10. I just want to see once the diamond formation based backfield with Berglund flanked by Byrd and Pegram with Jimmerson deep behind.. Then run a various power runs, options, screens and play-action out of it.. I love the diamond formation. To make it even more fun, motion Jimmerson pre-snap to the slot on some plays and then add in some fly sweep stuff, play action and straight pass plays. Forces teams to load the box due to foramtion and then use then use Jimmerson's pass catching ability as an advantage on a LB

That sounds pretty cool. I would not be opposed to that in the least.

  11. If we don't run a play action pass on the first offensive play from scrimmage against Idaho, I may just retreat to the bar in the club level and not check back in until halftime.

Set the F'n tone for the season.

Idaho had a weak secondary last year and is returning just one starter and their line backing crew is brand new as well. We have to throw like crazy all over their back seven.
  12. With fall camp set to start tomorrow one thing we're all anxious to see is how improved this veteran offense is going to be with Mac and Chico talking about opening up the playbook. Last year we averaged just 20.9 points/game which was good for just 105th in the country. While many of us have confidence in our OC Mike Canales, myself included, there are always plays that we as fans would've called differently.

Heading into this year what are some plays that you would call more this year and would like to see us run? For me I thought the wildcat with Chancellor worked well last year and I'd like to see more of that. I also want to see us run screen plays to Jimmerson, seeing as we scored 3 touchdowns on those plays last year.

  13. Likeness as in there is a player on UNT with #16 from Gunbarrel, CO classified as a "Scrambler" QB who is a 6'4 sophomore weighing 215, is really fast and has a hell of an arm as well as a rating of 79.

He also looks a lot like Brock Berglund.

For example, though, the Manziel in the game was modeled after him...and it looks a LOT like him. Frankly, I'd be a little pissed if EA Sports was making money off of me without receiving any of the money they make...

Correction: he's #4 in NCAA football 14 and, as you said, Berglund is #16. So they can't possibly be the same guy, right?
  14. Not really. Cole and Horton didn't qualify. That has nothing to do with talent.

Stradfotd and C. Feldt were 4 stars... but that was long before they came to UNT. By the time we got them, they had already failed to live up to those rankings at their initial school.

The others were 3 stats, and some very borderline 3 stars at that.

Tyler Stradford was a borderline 3 star. People call him a bust, but he was a reach for OU to sign in the first place. He was a 3 star on rivals and ESPN and a 2 star on scout, when scout was relevant. Stradford was a major reach for OU who they signed because he was fast and that's it. He had no other major offers for a reason.

As for Cam Feldt, and Boone really, it shows how hard it is to project high school lineman playing low level football. Pushing around 180 pound defensive ends looks cool on the highlight tape but doesn't prepare them well for battle tested D1 defensive lineman.

  15. I guess I was generally speaking of good talent that didn't go anywhere for us. Sorry I didn't do any research at 1am. ;) Both played as freshman and showed potential, with Brooks getting a safety in his first game and Stock starting half the year as a true freshman and laying out some folks. I think we can demonstrate that Brooks was a good prospect based upon him ending up in the Big 12.

How about Tyler Stradford and Cam Feldt? Boone Feldt for that matter. Xavier Kelley? (I still don't get why he left when a walk-on was the backup for his position.)

DQ Johnson, Kerry Swarn, Jamison Hughes, D'Andre Wood, Jeremy Bean, Dawaylon Cook, Justin Edwards, Nate Jenkins, Kylie Hill, Troy Franklin, Devante Davis, Chaz Sampson, Alonzo Horton, Willie Cole, etc?

    Better? :)

That's my point. It's much easier to project guys once you've seen them strap on their helmets for the Green. Even if just for a game like Brooks.

Projecting players in high school, especially after their junior year like our current commits, is extremely difficult. All star ratings mean is that some people are judging their potential athletically. If there is a consensus that a kid has good skills on the field by multiple recruiting outlets then the kid probably has something that college coaches can work with.

Whether they end up as head cases or have no work ethic is not indicated by stars. Of course stars don't determine how successful a player will be, they just give a reference point as to how talented he is in high school compared to current and future recruits.

  16. Maybe it was a veiled shot at Nunn, according to ESPN our highest rated recruit this year. Will likely never see the court at UNT.

Maybe it was a shot at Stojkovik, who was a huge talent and freshman contributor that washed out b/c of off field issues.

Maybe it was a shot at Terrell Brooks, who quit football to only appear at a JC and then commit to Baylor, meanwhile bashing UNT.

Maybe it was a shot at the countless JUCOs that rated 3 stars and never made it to campus.

Maybe keep your bullshit on the basketball board where it belongs. If Mac fails this year, you can hop on the negative waves train on the football board. Until then, keep the 100% crapola broken record on the Benford board.

    Kisses,

    ben

So you use a couple of 2 star players (Stojkovic and Brooks) as examples of how highly ranked players don't always pan out? At least keep the argument consistent.
