  1. Derek Thompson went and talked to the ref right after that offside call presumably to check clock status. Why would they be so nonchalant if they were told the clock would be moving. I'm not suggesting a conspiracy but maybe that the ref made a mistake in his communication to DT.

That's what I'm wondering too. I understand the rule and all, but the explanation by the ref is what has me confused. Did he explain it wrong to DT?
  2. Really people? Derek Thompson is terrible? The loss is on him? You guys are approaching insanity. He played average on Saturday. He made enough throws that with a little help we could have won the game. Thompson has never been the guy who UNT could solely rely on to win a game. He needs help from everyone around him including the coach staff. Saturday he didn't get that help. He missed on some throws, he had some drop passes on big 3rd downs, and he wasn't helped out by his OC.

Here's a thought why did the offense panic? Why did we throwing the ball 46 times on a blustery winter day when we are a running team? We didn't stay patient with our running game like we always do and it cost us. So for those of you who are trying to place all or most of blame on DT please grow up. His play on Saturday was not the only reason we lost the game.

The argument is not that he went out and lost us the game, or that he is the sole reason we lost. The argument is that he couldn't step up and be a difference maker/game changer. Of course he's never been that guy, and no one was saying he was that kind of player. Just that not having a difference maker at qb finally caught up to us when our special teams and defense finally weren't able to win the game on their own.

Soza was a difference maker, DT wasn't and they lost. Soza threw the ball 49 times on the same blustery winter day, and they aren't any more pass-oriented than we are.

Not trying to get into an argument with you, Greg. Just catching you up on what has been said.

  3. Their pass game has struggled all year long. They started off with Nebraska transfer, last year's starter, senior Cody Green at qb but he continued to be inneffective. He was inneffective last year but it was masked by their solid team and running game.

Since then they have moved on to redshirt freshman qb Dane Evans. Evans is from Sanger and I actually played some little league baseball with him before when he lived in Arlington (I know, cool story bro). He's got a strong arm and isn't a dual threat but can scramble. He hasn't been great either, throwing for just 4 tds and 10 picks.

They want to rely on their running game and their two senior running backs. Both Trey Watts and Jaterian Douglas, of Arlington Lamar, have run for over 2000 yards in their careers and are dangerous. Watts has run for 1215 yards this year as their main guy, but Douglas is a home-run threat who can't be taken lightly.

If we can keep their running game in check we should be fine. However, our offense needs to come out and prove that they aren't the weak link.

  4. i thought this topic was going here for a second

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQArDMKdSVc

DT did not play well... but drops in the redzone on a sure touchdown pass by Jimmerson and a first down opportunity by D. Smith killed any momentum we had whatsoever... i said it before and Ill say it again... this game played out almost exactly like the Troy game from last year, where the offense looked just as bad

As the qb, you take at least half the credit for the Jimmerson drop. He could've caught the ball and you could even say he should've, but the ball was not where you're supposed to put it as the quarterback. Same with those interceptions against MTSU that deflected off Brelan. they were behind Brelan when he had his hands out in front of him while running the slant. And all the times D Smith bailed out DT, not just this game but the last two seasons, you can't fault him for one play.

I agree that it was a team loss and the lack of offensive production doesn't just rest on Derek's shoulders, but if we had good quarterbacking on Saturday we wouldn't be playing the blame game.

Derek has two games left in his career. He can turn things around and play like he did against Ball State, or he can play like he has the last two weeks and be remembered for his lack of accuracy and inability to win us ball games that the defense and/or special teams could not.

  5. A lot of criticism on playcalling and DT yesterday. There was a lot of talk about how DT had improved this year but lately it seems like he's regressed. To me it's because we're trying too hard to hit throws down the field. DT's successful games like Idaho, Ball State, and K-State last year featured dink and dunk fests. Outs, slants, hitches, bubble screens. Keep it simple, let him hit the easy stuff, and get his confidence up.

Not trying to sound like I've had a playcalling epiphany. Myself and others have been calling for this all year. 2 more games left, will we go back to dinking and dunking, or why won't we?

  6. I agree with everything you said except your bowl predictions. Rice cant draw more of a crowd in DFW than we can. We have received a lot more attention this year and our story has brought back a lot of fans. Whether they came out in freezing cold weather or not, it's true.

I think you're forgetting that UTSA can't go to a bowl this year for prelim reasons.

You're right. HoD officials know that and that guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The bowl spots will be filled and UTSA won't be eligible to go to a bowl.
  7. I think DT is tough, and is a leader. I just don't think he has "it".

As far as the running Qb. It's an added dimension. If youre having an off day you can still contribute. Plus it will open up the running game for the backs as DE's will have to hold containment and won't be able to crash down the line.

Absolutely. Our line is good enough as it is, then when you add in the qb zone-read fakes serve as basically an extra blocker by making the end keep contain, our running game should improve as well.

I really am interested to see how our new qb performs with our excellent pass protecting line returning and making the defense have to scheme for a mobile qb.

  8. This isn't about the ability to run per se. This is about being a tough minded leader who calmly does whatever it takes to win.....regardless of who else on the team is having a bad day or not.

I agree. DT's lack of mobility is completely secondary as to why he is an average to below average qb. I was just adding in the running factor to the conversation because I believe whoever our qb is next year, while I strongly believe they will be an improvement to our passing game, they will still have their off days.

Hopefully their off days aren't as bad as 10-24 against 2-9 UTEP or 11-24 against 2-9 FCS Texas Southern, but when they do have off days it certainly helps to still always know you have their running ability to help out your playcalling and make the opposing defensive coordinator take into account.

  9. I know myself, Billy and others have been saying this all season. DT is a middle of the pack QB in CUSA and in the lower half of all QB's in the country. Yes he can have good games, yes he can have horrible games, but yesterday was his average self. His typical day is 17-31 for 215, 1 td 1 int. Those numbers are enough to win if you get great RB play, or points from your special teams, or turnovers from your D. But those numbers will not win you a game.

I can't wait till next season to see what Dajon or BB can bring to this offense.

Yup, we're usually on the same page and I like to think it's the right one :)

But yes, in this day and age with the evolution of the passing game, qb, and spread offenses and such you can only mask having your qb play be your weakest link for so long. Days like this where DT is average or below average it really hurts not having an added dimension as a running qb. Qbs are going to have off days throwing, but there are really no off days athletically unless there is an injury.

  10. Glad this quote didn't make the DMN. Mason is one if my favorite players and though this may be how he feels, spouting it to the media comes across just sounding like sour grapes IMHO.

I understand , but I disagree. I think mason, as a captain of the team, is conveying the general opinions and feelings of the whole team. If the media doesn't know how he or the team really feels after the game then they wouldn't ask. I prefer this over players giving standard coach speak.
  11. Where was North Texas projected to finish going into this year? Yep, those long range forecasts carry a lot of weight.

We had not won but we were close. Prognosticators just factored in our record and that we were coming from the belt and assumed we would be 4th-6th in our division. Following the team you could tell this would be a good year if our offense could step up.

We know our division now. They're all teams who we played this year, except UAB, and we have a pretty good handle of who they are. Of course teams will make big jumps and drop offs, but there is no reason we shouldn't stay at or near the top against this competition with the way Mac is running this ship.

  12. Josh Rfer- his opinion is just thst, an opinion. Maybe nit your truth but his. No one on that team takes it more personally thsn he does. He is hurting for unt more than you can imagine.

Don't worry about what Josh Rfer has to say. Anyone who follows this team closely knows Mason's personality and why he is a leader and captain of this football team.
  13. Well, that morning after feeling sure sucks. Losing our grip on the CUSA West lead in our last home game was incredibly frustrating but we will be back in a position to win the west soon enough.

Looking at our division for next year it should set up nicely. Here are the overall records of the schools that will be in CUSA West next year:

    Rice - 8-3

    North Texas - 7-4

    UTSA - 6-5

    La Tech - 4-7

    UTEP - 2-9

    UAB - 2-9

    Southern Miss - 0-11

Southern Miss will not be down forever, but I can't see them making a big enough rebound to contend for next year. UAB is used to being a bottom dweller and last made a bowl in 2004 when they had Roddy White. UTEP will have Showers back but their defense has a long ways to go. La Tech could be improved with their core returning, but they actually lose a lot of seniors. UTSA will be tough competition going forward but losing Soza will be difficult for them. If they can successfully replace his production then they'll be dangerous. Rice is another senior laden club but they'll be the favorites, a long with us for next year.

Our recruiting class is shaping up nicely and if that continues and Mac continues to develop the players the way he has then we should be in good shape mostly every year. Should be wide open next year.

  14. I don't remember the chancellor pass, but the jimmerson pass over his outside shoulder towards out of bounds as opposed to his inside shoulder where it should of been. Could it have been caught? Yes. Easy catch? No. Good throw? No.

Exactly. That's what I meant by saying it could be counted as a drop, but as a qb you take at least half of the responsibility on that drop because you didn't put the ball where it was supposed to be.

  15. I hope Benford lets them play and they all make he grades come spring! I think they will continue to gain chemistry and improve (I hope). I was ready to throw in the towel and assume we would lose by 20 but this just keeps me hanging on for more

Yeah, he has some talented players at his disposal. His job is to put them in the best position to be successful as he can, and it does often seem like just letting them play ball instead of constricting them is the way to go.
