  1. I'll admit, I've never previously heard of ClutchPoints.com, but found this 6/28 scouting report on Fine (and other G5 QBs to be deeper than most out there thus far)...

"...In the film room, Fine’s efficient 2018 season compares favorably to Alex Smith’s 2004 season in Utah, playing under Urban Meyer’s spread. Like the former No. 1 pick, he throws with touch, anticipation, faces pressure well, and is nimble enough to extend a play...."

  2. Glad to see the adjustment but last year's approach made sense at the time too...

Coming off the CBI Championship, continuity of rotations and familiarity of roles gave our squad a leg up on others early in the year and the 16-1 start proved it to be the correct call.  Unfortunately, once the depth was tested by injury and conference play brought on foes with deeper knowledge of tendencies, we weren't successful in adjusting.

Challenging the players to stretch their skill sets early in camp and in non-conference play may cost us such a notable early season record but will hopefully prove to provide greater versatility as a team when we face off against the rest of CUSA.

  3. Thought I'd share a recent podcast interview with Johnny Quinn...a great listen for those of us who've followed his career through the years.

Know going in that Sports Spectrum is self-described as "Where Sports & Faith Connect" and they specifically provide a platform for those connected to the sports industry to speak about their Christian faith.  So, much of the interview is Quinn speaking about his faith.

  4. This is perfect.

The only thing that will turn the tide on the general CFB attendance slide is finding ways to make the stadium experience stand apart from the many alternatives available to those who aren't as die hard as the ones on this board.

Many are motivated to make at least the annual trek out to Globe Life Park to get food items that can't be duplicated elsewhere.  This vending relationship adds one more reason to say "the Apogee experience is unmatched."

  5. Certainly something to aspire towards but a couple elements make their situation different from ours:

    1.  Regional P5 schools are largely from the Big 12 and are guaranteed regular visits to the metroplex to face TCU.  Absent this, we might have a greater shot at selling them on a chance to play in front of area recruits.

    2.  The Pac 12 as a group have prioritized lessening exposure to FCS squads and "overpaying to avoid the return game...

"for one-off home games against lower-level Division I opposition has become costly. Top Power 5 schools frequently pay more than a million dollars to have an opponent come to their stadium with no return road game. Also, Scott said, Pac-12 schools have a difficult time drawing fans for games against lesser competition."

I think that if we continue to see success of the field and build a reputation in line with what SDSU has, we'll have opportunity.  We have Cal coming in 2022, Memphis in 2023, Texas Tech in 2027, and Baylor in 2028...we're moving in the right direction.

  6. The closest comp I can see is when Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois) came in 3rd in 2013.

At the point he was named a finalist, Northern Ilinois was 12-1 (after starting 12-0).  His stat line before the bowl game was

    • 2,676 Passing Yards
    • 1,881 Rushing Yards
    • 46 touchdowns (22 rushing, 23 passing, and 1 receiving.)

    Source: https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/10111560/heisman-trophy-finalists-jordan-lynch-johnny-manziel-tre-mason-aj-mccarron-andre-williams-jameis-winston

The opportunities are there for Mason.

Cal is thought to have one of the better LB/Secondary groups in the nation.  A strong performance against them - and a victory - would garner more attention than the Arkansas win did last year.

Houston and D'Eriq King will bring a salty squad to Denton ready to fire back at whatever Fine throws their way.  Win a classic G5 shootout against a fellow Heisman dark horse and the buzz would begin in earnest.

May be an uphill battle but one thing is certain... the #6forHeisman campaign is a signal to all recruits that with hard work you can dream big and get noticed in Denton.

I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that it was lengthened to the international length, as international basketball is increasingly becoming an alternative to the NCAA for the top high school prospects.

Clearly the change was expedited after RJ Hampton's media parade proclaiming Australia's NBL as a better vehicle to prepare him for the NBA.

Whether this sways kids to take the NCAA route to the NBA rather than alternatives is of little concern to me.  Ultimately, though, this should make the game more visually appealing to casual viewers with the extra spacing.  Also, it may

I would think the change would make defensive length on the wings more valuable since there's now more ground to cover when closing out on three point shooters.

Also, hopefully having to update the line will cause FIU to rethink their awful beach themed court

  8. Was named the QB MVP at The Opening's Houston Regional three months ago.

    Found a recent interview...

    Quote

Where are you seeing the biggest improvements this offseason in your game from technique and form to the mental aspects of the game?

“The biggest improvement is from playing under center. We do a lot in the spread out here. Knowing the drops from under center, which drops to throw to routes, and how to read the defenses from under center have all been big improvements and growth in my game.”

Have you gone to any camps this offseason?

“Yes, sir. I went to the Army All-American Combine in January (San Antonio), the regional camp in Dallas for the Nike Opening, and I went to the Elite 11 in Houston. I won MVP there for QBs at the Houston Elite 11.”

    Wow. Congrats.

    “Thank you.”

What did you do well at the Elite 11 to earn MVP honors?

“My drive to go out there to get what I have worked so hard for was there – I earned it. I showed them what I have to offer. I showed that I can be the guy who can make all the throws with no drops and that I am the guy who can read the defenses.”

  9. Last year's squad had a lot of sameness in terms of size and skill on the wings which helped addressing cross matches in transition but seemed to cause congestion on offense because most of the team members' greatest offensive ability was to create their own shot.

These newcomers appear to bring some play making that we lacked when Ryan wasn't on the floor or available.  Hopefully, the offense should flow more smoothly as a result.

I also remain convinced that Smart's tough year was a direct result of his injury and difficulty getting back into peak shape afterward.  I think we see a return to form for him in the 19-20 season.

  10. I want nothing more than to see Fine walk of the field with a CUSA title and bowl win this year, so I would have accepted a recruiting approach that focused on immediate contribution.

That said, what the staff's focus on high school players says to me is:

    1. The coaches are confident in the depth they've developed and that the program has players ready to step into vacated roles
    2. Littrell did not turn down KState and stay in Denton with a distracted, "one more and done" mindset

For those reasons, I'm glad they have recruited the way they have.

  11. In no particular order...

    1. Mason Fine (QB) - what is there to say?   Best QB in school history. Full command of the offense, great leader of men, and the poster boy for the new Mean Green Standard
    2. Patrick Cobbs (RB) - Ran opponents into submission and had enough juice to take it the distance
    3. Zach Orr (LB) - leader of the 2013 defense - arguably the best in program history (the best since S&P+ began in 2005)
    4. Trevor Moore (PK) - 80% FGs and 100% extra points.  Underappreciated.
    5. Booger Kennedy (DI) - disruptive force creating havoc in the backfield
    6. Lance Dunbar (RB) - carried the water in some dark times for the program and was special with the ball in his hands
    7. Johnny Quinn (WR) - Many acrobatic catches.  Made the most of limited opportunities.
    8. Cyril Lemon (OL) - "The Rev"... 2 time all-conference (twice honorable mention).  Made the introduction of those 2013 Centennial Celebration unis looks great!
    9. Jonas Buckles (S) - Hall of Famer ('15).  Truly the leader of a secondary that suffocated opposing passing games.
    10. Jeff Wilson (RB) - So incredibly versatile.  Unique vision and skill in the open field to make a house call even though a DB had the angle.

Some guys I loved to watch play but couldn't make the cut: Markeith Knowlton, Andy Brewster, Adrian Awasom, Kenny Buyers, Casey Fitzgerald, Brelan Chancelor

Additionally, offensive lineman Jordan Murray was invited to mini-camp with the Seattle Seahawks. Three-day rookie minicamps will be held between May 3-6, and dates will vary by team.

Murray made headlines early on based on his size alone...

"But two players looked the part Friday — 6-9 offensive tackle Jordan Murray of North Texas and 6-2, 234-pound receiver Daniel Williams, a third-year player who has also been on the rosters of the Jets, Browns and Washington the past two seasons.

Asked if he’d ever seen a 6-9 tackle before, Carrolll said: “I don’t know, but I have not gotten over it yet and I’m serious. OK. Six-nine and then you stand next to him or anybody stands next to him and he just, he just makes everybody look like a punk, you know? So I don’t know how he did today. I couldn’t tell, but he impressed me. I stood well away from him whenever I had a chance.’’

At least he's making an impression...now, hopefully, he can capitalize on the attention.

  13. Even though Vinatieri is expected to be the Colts kicker, this is a great opportunity for Hedlund.

Mike Badgley was in a similar spot last year as the Colts' camp leg until Vinatieri took over halfway through the preseason.  The experience and exposure proved valuable as  Badgley was picked up by the Chargers in October, finished the season as their full time kicker, and now looks to be their long-term plan for the position.

Our scouting staff is becoming quite a machine at uncovering talent and developing early relationships. It'll payoff - whether that's in '20 or down the road as guys look to transfer in search of playing time.

  15. Would love to take in one more season of Woolridge's composure and calm leading the team but - even though it opens up options for him to consider leaving Denton - more than anything, I'm glad to hear that he'll be securing his degree in May.  He's given a lot to this program and will stand as a key contributor to its culture change whether he laces them up here one next year or not.

  16. Came across an interesting tidbit about our Mean Green reading Dane Brugler's NFL Draft guide.  According to Brugler, in the spring of 2016 when QB Ryan Finley was choosing his transfer destination when leaving Boise State, he'd narrowed the decision down to NC State and North Texas.  This appears to be corroborated by USA Today (LINK) .

The QB Timeline appears to look something like this...

    • Dec '15: Alec Morris agrees to transfer to North Texas
    • Jan '16: Mason Fine commits to North Texas
    • May '16: Ryan Finley transfers to NC State

I know we'd all keep things as they played out but it's fascinating to wonder if Finley had landed in Denton, how things would have shaken out.
