  1. I don't understnd why some of you are blowing a gasket over HS games being played at Apogee. I checked all the of 1st round HS playoff games set for this Thursday-Saturday and there are only two College Stadiums used for games. Baylor has two games and Houston's Stadium has one game.

If the stars and planets align up correctly after Thanksgiving there could be several games played at Apogee. Of course, that is if the two schools want to pay the high fee.

The fact is Apogee is the new kid on the block and it will take a while for the UNT staff to build relationships with HS Coaches/AD who make decisions on where they play.

  2. One person states that a coach friend looked into pricing and was told that Apogee is $23,000 per game and we all take it as gospel. I would really be curious to know if this is in fact true.

The cost for renting the stadium is very much true. I was told by a local High School Coach friend of mine that how much UNT is charging local high schools.

Yes, a high school game could be played there, especially during the later rounds if a 5A/4A from east Texas meets up with a team from west Texas.

  3. C.H. Collins on Loop 288 is around $7,500. Some of the bigger, richer schools could afford to pay that, but for that price they could play at Cowboys Stadium. Its the smaller schools that would want to play @ Apogee and cannot afford it. Dickey (UNT), Patterson(TCU), and Briles(Baylor) are some coaches/schools that have had alot of success recruiting players from smaller schools. These are the type of kids who would be impressionable and really appreciate playing playoff games @ Apogee.

CH Collins is around $2,500-$3,000 depending on if the schools are 5a/4a or lower classification.

  4. Correction: it appears through preliminary attendance numbers that Guyer will move back down to 4A. Creating the Ryan / Guyer rivalry once again

On a side note a lot of people attend high school football games without a school connection because they enjoy football. I attend a Ryan or Guyer game at least 5-6 times a year. I live in Krum and graduated from Gainesville. I enjoy football and both teams provide good football to watch. Once Krum starts playing Varsity ball I will attend some of those games as well.

Ryan turned in 2121 students which will put them in 5A and Guyer turned in 2064 students, which is one less than the 5A cutoff from 2 years ago. So Guyer could go back down to 4A.

  5. As much as it pains me to say it, being a native Dentonite, I don't think Denton will always be a non-supportive city. I'm sitting here at the Denton Ryan/Denton game and they're not coming out in droves for this game either. I'm talking to a nice lady who works here at C.H. Collins and she was just relating to me that this game doesn't often draw near what this stadium holds....in fact I bought a reserved seat on row 14 and she told me "just sit anywhere, nobody will be fighting over seats."

As an aside she told me that Denton High doesn't like playing at C.H. Collins. Apparently they prefer to play at their on campus field. So this stadium that Denton was so hell-bent on building all for themselves...and not building cooperatively with North Texas...sits empty when DHS plays at home.

Have things really changed since Ryan was playing in the state championship game 10 years ago? It's the same Forum guys on here complaining that Ryan (or now Denton) didn't have a big fan following when they were winning state championships.

Denton likes playing at Bronco Field because just a few hundred fans fills the place. Also, Denton is winless in district and Broncos fans aren't going to come out for a beating against Ryan. Which by the 4th quarter it was. I give Denton credit they played hard for most of the game, but turnovers got 'em.

It will be interesting to see what type of crowd shows up on Nov. 4th for the Guyer/SLC game. I know SLC travels well.

  6. Ryan vs. Guyer will draw a load more than this game. There are two big time HS programs in Denton, and the Broncs ain't one of 'em right now. They just don't draw like the other two, and they don't have the support.

Fact, Guyer is 5A and Ryan is in 4A. They haven't played eachother since December of 2009. Well have to wait until Feb. to see if both schools make it to the same 5A district.

  7. The first thing they need to do is go to Day's Ace Hardware and get some duplicate keys made

Good shameless plug, but it's the only place in Denton where customer service actually means something. I mean, you can find someone to help you, and you don't have to go find someone to ask a question. It's kind of like the old day at Evers' Hardware on the square.

  8. purely speculation but does anyone else think the sidewalk coming off the alumni pavilion (currently leading to nowhere) could be the eventual route to the bridge to fout's parking lot?

Look at this link and you can see where the proposed pedestrian bridge is planned with the new I-35 construction. My concern is it looks like the ramp to the bridge on the south side (on schematic south is up) is going away from the stadium.

  9. C Vo knows of what he speaks. Nice posts.

And yes, Paul Manieri is still steaming that he can't steal the tournament with his guys hitting home runs off the handle anymore.

Thanks, I wonder how the 2nd generation of BBCOR's coming out this fall will improve or change again. Bat manufactoring is a big business and they are always trying to do something to get a upper hand over the competition.

  10. With the change in college bats recently the bats are more similar to the pros and so is the offensive strategy. I don't think the pitching is that big of an issue with there being fewer games and more time in between. The biggest issue from above would would be the scholarships...maybe he could google it.

I just think he would be a good enough recruiter/coach in a talent rich state to make an impact in the sunbelt. He also has local ex-pro friends to join his staff. It 'd be like an extended fantasy camp. :D

The BBCOR bats replaced the BESR bats in College this year. The BBCOR bat has a smaller sweet spot and is heavy ended. The difference between both of them is basiclly bat exit speed and that has been "dumbed" down so to speak.

The BBCOR bat is nothing like wood, but it is close. It has changed College baseball this season. Offensive home runs and averages are way down. It has placed a premium on pitching, defense and speed in the outfield.

This is one reason why DBU and other smaller schools are doing well in the NCAA tournamnet. One change in a rule has changed the whole make up of the game. Good, quality Pitching is now a premium, as it always has been, it's just helped smaller schools compete. Pitchers can now throw inside and dominate a good hitter.

Texas High Schools will have to use the BBCOR bats next season. California High Schools used it this year had the same results as NCAA Colleges have had.

Thank God my son is a High School pitcher. He needs to hit the weight room to help him swing the heavy ended bat.

  11. I'm not opposed to getting Rusty Greer aka The Red Baron on board with any and all future baseball plans at North Texas. Thanks.

Rusty Greer is coaching a 10 year old select team right now! Yes, he's a well known name around these parts, but there other college coaches who would be a better choice.

  12. My first choice for a head coach would be Skip Johnson. He's a hometown guy that has proven himself in recruiting at Texas and Navarro College. He actually was a pitcher for UNT the last time we had baseball.

My only concern is he might be next in line when Augie retires.

Now, you can start in on the Augie F Bomb jokes!

  13. Does anyone know how much UNT will charge per game for High Schools to play at the new stadium?

YOU GUYS ARE SMOKING CRACK if you think Denton ISD is ever going to play in this stadium!

The stadium might get a few 5A, maybe 4A football playoff games this year. But again, I wonder how much it is going to cost each high school to play there. With state budget cuts hitting Texas ISD's hard this year I would guess that this stadium will be overpriced for many schools to consider. I could see several of the Lewisville ISD's school playing regular season games here, but Marcus just built a new football facility on their campus, so the annual Lewisville vs. Marcus game that used to be held at Texas Stadium or even the school to the south may not even consider using UNT's new football Stadium.

At C.H. Collins, for out of district teams, there is a playoff price for 5A and 4A, and another price for 3A, 2A on down.

Another concern is parking. Where is the parking near the stadium?

I hope to see a game day plan of how parking is going to be handled. Will UNT supply shuttles across the highway?

Also, when is the Athletic Department going to announce the official name for the new stadium?

Football Stadium at Mean Green Village just doesn't cut it.

  14. Big win for DBU. Dallas Baptist beat Oklahoma baseball today 3-2 at the Regional in Ft. Worth. Half of the DBU Patriots are from the North Texas area. DBU has been building a great program with mostly local talent for the past several years and it's starting to pay off.

  15. What are the latest plans for adding a baseball program? I know a facility will have to be built & there are some Title 9 problems to address. Division 1 baseball only gets 11.5 scholarships so the Title 9 issues aren't that great. I'm a big fan of softball. But having a baseball team on campus is what I need to enjoy spring & early summer.

Do you think baseball will be added in 3, 4, 5 or more years?

  16. And, the TV studio where Dicky's and Headricks' video was shot has been closed down as well. I believe the interviews were shot in 2005 or so. So it's been a good 6 years. The Center for Media Production was a place I worked at on Campus for 6 years in Chilton Hall. The Center was closed at least 4 years ago when Batille was there. I left a year before all the big changes on Campus.

The only thing I really enjoyed about the job was getting to go to 4 New Orleans Bowls on the schools dime!
