Rice and Charlotte could have moved to the Belt or stayed put. Also from what I read there will no longer be separate East/West or North/South divisions on the majority of conferences beginning next year.Television likes the BIG 12 model where the 2 best teams in the conference play at the end of the season .

Interesting. I thought they were keeping the divisions model when we made the move. I kind of also like what the Pac12 did and do 9 conference games. Having 1 less OOC game makes them more valuable and we can hopefully get some good matchups/a more premium price tag if we go play the Alabamas/Ohio States of college football. Plus it would hopefully get rid of the FCS scheduling, those do nothing for us as fans.

Thompson really liked UNT. I believe the MWC was ready to make a move into Texas and the AAC wasn't looking for competition.

I know it will never come out, but I'd really like to know if there were talks and how far those talks went. MWC would have been the next best move if the AAC wasn't available.

Outside our Green world many were saying the only reason we were invited was to have a team in the DFW area if SMU was to leave (I think many thought we would be going to the MWC). Maybe we should focus a little more on how we can step up our game and not question why others were invited.

I feel like there was some truth to the MWC rumors. If true the AAC made a preemptive move to block the AAC from getting into TX/the central time zone.

That's odd.  I thought we were in this position because we are currently tied for the 2nd best conference record and hold tie-breakers over WKU who is also sitting at 4-2 and FAU who is one game back.  Why must every ounce of success we have be minimized or explained away as a fluke?  Most pre-season predictions slotted us as middle to lower half of the pack in conference play.  WKU and FAU along with UAB were all supposed to finish above us.  Seems like we have exceeded most predictions this year or have we just been lucky and everyone else unlucky?  We've played under the same circumstances as everyone else in conference.  I wonder if WKU, FAU or UAB wish they were lucky like us.

Because this situation wouldn't be happening last year, next year, or any other year UTSA has a higher record than us since they will be in our division. This year teams left unexpectedly and forced CUSA to have no divisions, creating the circumstance to keep us in the title race. Any other year and Saturday is the last game and we end up playing for either a 7-5 or 6-6 record. How is that not luck?

I did't say we won games by luck, we got ourselves there. But this scenario is absolutely a lucky break for UNT.

Lets see how many more fire LIttrell threads that can be started before the end of the season.

Littrell's NT fate will be decided by their play in the final three games.

I don't get this constant mantra of anti-Littrell propaganda in a season that could still end up with a conference championship.

This year needed to have a good level of improvement to warrant an extension, UNT's play on the field did not show that. Does this year really feel like a CCG run? 6-5 with 2 conference losses? We are there by circumstance and luck that there are no divisions this year.

Since the beginning of the year I said we had no choice but to let the season play out, let SL make his case as to why he deserves another extension. For me personally it was 8-4, so as soon as that 5th loss to UAB happened it was done for me. I understand you can't get rid of a coach that still has a chance to get you to a championship, so now we are forced to wait and see again.  The only way he saves his job is to win the CCG.

  6. You can tell the guys still need to be coached into what Mac wants. It's understandable since we have so many new guys out there and they only have 3 actual games to try to work out the kinks. Having Perry and Jones back was a huge plus, you can tell they really helped anchor the team. Neither one of them is 100% so I expect them to step it up with more time and minutes.

Hopefully the guys start to build that chemistry and gel into a single unit like Mac likes as they get more games under their belts.

That was their plan to save ships for more players that might go to the portal at a latter date.  I don't think there was a strict time to enter the portal as there is now.

I think it's pretty clear they were hoping some surprise names would be left out by the bigger schools and UNT would swoop in and snag them. It didn't work out, and if you go back to that time people were pretty unhappy with recruiting to put it lightly.

Oregon would gladly take their place in a heartbeat. I think the regents are hoping to "force" them to invite Cal also.

If anything it would only make UCLA lose their invite. There's no way UCLA would have any leverage into forcing the Big10, and maybe that's what the regents would want.

That's what I thought but apparently the Regents have authority over UCLA. They can block UCLA which would ultimately lead to a long and messy fight in the California court system. If they do allow UCLA to leave, they could also force UCLA to reimburse Cal Berkley for the loss of future TV revenue. Ouch.

Get your popcorn ready and enjoy the show.

Even the article mentions it as unlikely, but I guess technically possible. I'd think if they did block the move UCLA would then be able to sue the Regents over lost revenue as well so it gets very messy, and I doubt either side wants a long legal battle. I think it still goes through, but we will see.

Seems to me, NT did pretty well in the portal.

As far as the "wait and see approach", not sure how you would know when and how many portal players were analyzed and recruited by NT.

They stated that was their plan after having signed 8 players in early signing:

    Quote

ON HAVING LESS SIGNEES THAN PAST YEARS AT THIS POINT:

“It was a good start, we have a long way to go until February. Again, it’s a little different this year. I think for the past few years we’ve been done at this point, but with the landscape it’s gone to you always want to have enough scholarships left over to make sure you find the best players. There’s going to be a ton of great players out there in January leading into February signing day. I think you can get some steals, I really do, because of how the recruiting’s gotten. There’s more players that are going to go unsigned this year than in a lot of different years at the high school level. That’s just where we’re at. Continuing to evaluate and finding needs and I think you’re going to get some really good football players in January and the February signing day.”

They only added 5 more in February, hoping to land some surprise recruits with left over scholarships.

Agree.   The PAC will be in survival mode after the Big10 and Big12 finish shopping there.   The PAC will then have to look at the MWC and perhaps AAC to reload.

The AAC could also be shopping for MWC leftovers.  Edge schools like Colo State, New Mexico, Air Force would add some additional markets to the AAC.

One thing to worry about is upsetting the eastern schools. Adding CSU and AF would be good but they push the conference even more towards the west. Good for us, but it's making the east look a little sparse. I'm sure they would want someone like App. St.

He's just trying to be funny. A few months ago I suggested to him maybe try being more positive when he was word vomiting his usual diatribe of UNT is a music school and only ever will be, the 17, money is a major problem, budgets, lovelace and SL are bffs, etc etc

His reponse was he'll point out my negative posts.

    Ah, got it.

Our offense has been really good. I believe a lot of the issues are built around the fact they don’t necessarily trust Aune to do what they want him to do.

Too early to say on the recruiting front. He hasn’t been here that long, and it’s hard to get a gauge on how hard we’re trying to actually recruit high school players.

Our RBs have been excellent. Our offense has too many 3 and outs/red zone/sustained drive problems for me to feel confident about keeping Bloesch.

I was not a fan of the "Let's wait and see what's left in the portal" approach to recruiting last year. They didn't go after much in the early signing period and settled for whatever was left. I think you need to go back and see how unhappy people were during that time.

    You should be more positive...

Is being realistic being negative? SL is expected to beat Rice and lose to UTSA if that happens. It's the truth, whether either happens or not is a probability dependent on circumstances. Nothing in the years that SL has been here have shown he will reverse the trend of winning games he shouldn't.

Fuente still makes the most sense to me for a multitude of reasons, but I’m warming up to Joe Gillespie and keeping Mike Bloesch and the offensive staff.

Interested as to why you would want to keep Bloesch on? I would think much of our gripes about offense would fall on him; QB play, play calling, schemes, execution, recruiting, etc.

UAB is playing pretty well. They lost to WK by 3, and in double overtime to UTSA with their backup QB.The Blazers have lost 5 games by a total of 27 points. At 5&5, their next 2 games are LSU and LA. Tech. Assuming they beat the Bulldogs they are bowl bound at 6 & 6. UNT should beat Rice and move to 7 &5, but lose again to UTSA for a 7 & 6 season. Looking at the stats from their first meeting its a wonder we were even in the contest. Having said that, that is what is great about College football [just ask UCLA] and why I love the game. On any given day..........

This just shows SL can't win the tough games. Outside of WKU there hasn't been a game that he should lose, but won instead. One solid win and loses to UNLV, Memphis, SMU, UTSA, and UAB. Just think about that, it's not a good outlook for the future.

Multiply this over multiple years and you can sum up this era.

For all those wanting to fire SL, who are you expecting the school him to replace him with?  You would have to expect the rest of the coaching staff to be out, as well as many players hitting the transfer portal.  It would almost certainly mean a full program rebuild, am I wrong?

I think if a player is going to leave, he will leave regardless. Everyone was worried about losing players last year if SL was let go, and we lost players anyway. It's better to let people go who want to, and rebuild with those that want to stay and play for a new coach.

Let's be honest about this loss. UNT lost because Littrell and company got out-coached. UAB made the halftime adjustments and scored 24 points in the second half, while UNT didn't and scored 0 points. Our players either didn't do what they were told... were never told to do what they needed to do... or didn't understand what they were being told to do. Any way you slice it, our players didn't make the plays, and the blame falls on our coaches. You can't polish a turd. This loss is what it is.

UNT is still a team that is not ready to compete against an AAC schedule next year. Beating the crap out of FIU last week was great, but it was just FIU. WKU (7-4) is still the only winning team Littrell and company have beaten this season. And, 3 of our 5 loses were to teams that currently have records of .500 or worse. Only 3 of C-USA's 11 teams have winning records right now. And only 3 teams on our 12 game schedule currently have winning records. Even with this incredibly weak schedule, we are struggling to back into a spot in the conference title game. Every Mean Green fan should be concerned about what we saw today.

I know this isn't the most important part of your post but technically.....

I suspect Littrell will be gone if he loses to Rice or UTSA, but he won't be terminated before the season ends.

While everyone apparently likes to blame everything on Littrell, the players lost this game.  Aune went back to his usual inconsistent game and was ineffective despite UAB loading the box and daring NT to throw.

Littrell obviously recognized Aune ineffectiveness by continually calling running plays against a stacked to stop the run defense.

NT's defense couldn't stop anything in the second half as UAB's runners broke tackle after tackle.  Nothing like averaging about 5 yard a carry after the player is stopped as UAB pushed the defense down the field.

UTSA wanted this game a lot more than NT.

The ultimate blame lies on those who built this team. Those who recruited/lost recruitment battles, and who coached/developed those players. Losing a game here and there because a player makes a mistake happens, but your overall body of work is made up of what you were able to bring here and how you made it perform on the field.
