  1. Mean Green - 31

    Tulsa - 22

Tulsa goes up and down the field (the few times their offense is on the field) but doesn't get in the end zone much.

Patrick - 130 (gets the record by 3rd qtr)

Jamario - 150 (most of it in the 2nd half)

    attendance - 25K

Times I say: "that guy's unvelieveable!" when Patrick or Jamario do something spectacular - 12

  2. “The knock on us is that we have won our last 26 games in the Sun Belt, but we can’t win out of conference games,” Chapman said. “We have something to prove. It would help us in recruiting because people want to win those big games.”

“It’s very important to us to win out of conference,” UNT wide receiver Johnny Quinn said. “Tulsa is a good team that is very physical. It will be a tough game.”

Good comments from the players. I'm glad to see they are focused and see the importance of OOC games for the whole program.

    That makes me feel better.

  3. 1st: Meager was 10-15, nothing spectacular, but no interceptions, completed a long pass, led the offense and the coaching staff did a good job with him. He made some rookie mistakes, but the first game jitters are behind him. His confidence HAS to be soaring right now.

2nd: The defense gave up yards, but didn't "break" Forcing turnovers, making big plays, the first game jitters are behind them. Their confidence HAS to be soaring right now.

3rd: I don't read too much into Jamario's reduced role. He looked a step slower to me for the most part (except for that long run where he exploded through the line and split the secondary) I still think he may be a little ginger on his hammy. Patrick Cobbs is still Patrick Cobbs. In my opinion, he carried this team last night with his play, and his leadership - both vocal and non vocal. Jamario will have his chances but it was great seeing #43 out there doing his thing.

4th: The stats didn't look great, but I thought the offensive line was pretty good overall. There were times when the D-Line seemed to push them around, but there were also some pretty big holes opened up and they'll get more consistant as they gel. The big question mark there was Chad Rose. The first game jitters are behind them. Their confidence has to be high righ now.

5th: The coaching was excellent last night. It's funny, the things a lot of fans have blasted DD and the coaching staff for in the past won us that game last night. I told a friend before the game if we have 0 turnovers in the game we will have a chance. The first game jitters are behind them and their confidence has to be high right now.

There is a common theme to those few points. The first game jitters are behind the team and their confidence has to be high righ now. The bottom line is we came out of this game with a win. Our young, untested defense held the best offense in the conference to 7 points. I don't think that can be overlooked.

Man, I'm still sky high from this win, because I think it was just HUGE. I was not feeling good going into this game, but DD and his coaching staff were the difference.

I hope the team is confident, fired up, and a big crowd shows up next week. Patrick, Jamario, and the O-Line have to be licking their chops after seeing Peterson go for 220 and 3 TDs yesterday against a team that has had trouble against the run the past few seasons.

    Should be fun next Saturday.

  4. Good to see that the Mean Green are ranked at the top in something.  Nationally, only Navy and Marshall will start fewer returning starters than us on saturday.  We currently will start 8 including only two on defense.  unsure.gif

    Rick

Not to jump too far ahead here, but if ANYONE in the sunbelt conference has any hope of knocking us off, they better do it this year.

This team is going to be scary next year.

  5. I'm predicting we will see a lot of the 2002 season with our QB play this year.  I can't find the stats on it but I remember Andrew wasn't allowed to throw the ball much at all against Nichols State.  Then as the season wore on and he learned the system better he threw more.  Towards the end of the season he really got to show his talents and it started with the game against the Middle in which he completed 14 passes for 206 yards and two TD's.  He ended up with the second highest QB rating for the conference that year.  Final stats were:

In 13 games Andrew Smith had,

    196 attempts

    91 completions

    9 Int's

    1206 yards

    7 TD's.

That's averaging only 15 passes a game, and this by a guy who could freaking wing the ball on a rope with accuracy anywhere on the field.  Who knows how damn good Andrew could have been with the pass?  We will never know of course.  The 2002 season certainly was no measure?

To me I see this as the track Danny will be put on as well.  If so and you go with our history, you can expect between 8 to 10 passes total in this game.  DD believes in the Darrel Royal philosophy that "three things can happen when you pass the ball and two of them ain't good".

EAT UP THE CLOCK AND RUN BABY RUN!!!!!!!!

    Rick

Plus don't forget, we were fortunate enough to have arguably the best defense in the history of Mean Green Football that season also.

I don't think we'll duplicate that this year.

  6. Here's what worries me about this game:

    1) Dickey's teams seem to run around lost for the first 3 or so games every year.

    2) Last year MT held Jamario to one of his lowest rushing totals of the year (180 or so yards)

    3) Scott Hall's career high in passing yards won the game

    4) Their Offense went up and down the field on our D last year

There has never been a conference game more set up for NT to lose than this one. Looking at this objectively, MT should win. They've got their whole team coming back, at home, one game under their belt while we've got a young unproven defense, a young unproven (understatement) QB, on the road, and our first game of the year. I don't think Meager is going to throw for nearly 300 yards the way Scott did last year.

BUT, on the other hand it is MTSU. They C H O K E better than any team in the conference. We've won big game after big game, so we're used to the pressure. Plus, NT's players will put everything on the line to protect that streak. And Andy McCullum is still their coach.

The intangibles will have to win this game. No mistakes, control the clock, discipline (no stupid penalties). The X-factor may be Patrick if they put him back there to return kicks.

Man, I cannot wait to see this game.

  7. The team was supposed to get the equipment ready, fly to Baton Rouge, play the season opener, fly back, get in late, etc.

    That's gone now.

Why not split up the team up and have a green and white game Saturday night?

A full 4 quarters. Give the coaches a chance to call real game situations, play a full game on the new fouts turf, stay sharp (as sharp as they can anyway given the situation)

It may sound like a lot of trouble but it can't be more trouble than flying out of town, etc.

Get the thing as close to game situations as possible? Get plays in to Meager, let him run the offense, etc. Mix in some MTSU plays, something. I'm not talking about a big advertised major event here. That may be seen in poor taste considering the tragedy that is still ongoing, but football wise, it may help.

Anything would help. The major downside of course would be risking injury.

But would that help or be a waste of time?

  8. **speaking from a total football perspective**

Players can start studying now, start getting fired up now, and have MTSU on their minds for two weeks getting ready for the biggest game of the year.

I think this is a good thing.

    They can forget LSU.

    The season starts September 10th.

  9. To be honest, I'm getting real nervous about my post #7,000.  No one has been in those uncharted smack board waters from GMG.com before.

Anyone want to suggest a theme for # 7,000? unsure.gif

Well let's see, Plumm's 7000th post, an average of 1,000 words per post, hey, you've typed 7 million words on the 'ole board!

Not bad for a fan of the team that sits "at the great real estate that is I35E and I35W in Denton, TX..........."

  10. Well, I have directv and if I'm not mistaken, if it's on ESPN Gameplan, it's on ESPN Gameplan regardless of cable, satellite, whatever.

The Gameplan schedule is on ESPN's website but I don't think it's complete. It appears they still have a few games to add.

I still can't believe the game won't be available live somehow.

  11. Is there really no way to watch this game live on TV? There's no PPV? Texas last year, OU the year before, Texas the year before that, they were all live on PPV in some fashion!

LSU is still covered by Fox Southwest right? Are they not going to offer this on PPV?

I've heard about the late night replay for this game, but that usually follows a live PPV.

    Anybody know for sure?
