The AAC gifted SMU a spot in the title game since they didn’t have to face Tulane or UTSA and only have Navy left on the schedule. Tulane and UTSA will cannibalize each other next week and it will likely be Tulane squeaking by into the title game as Traylor is likely distracted by the goings on in College Station.

So, where do we stand on this now?
I thought Passwaters was actually pretty good. He was highly motivated and was being taught by one of the best in the business (Bennett). The ones that had/have a problem with Passwaters mostly had that problem because he was related to Bennett and it wasn’t “fair” he got that job but they rarely complain about the actual product on the field just dismissed it by saying it was all the players and he had zero to do with their development.

Well @MAX KOCHwould say Kansas was foolish for taking Bean when Kason Martin is the real superstar.

It might be good for them to hire someone like him at a lesser contract to kind of reset the market before they go stupid again trying to get someone big time. Right now any big name coach is going to want over what Jimbo got. They need to change that to where Jimbo is no longer the last coach.

Actually, wasn't Jimbo subsequently hired to be the head coach at UAB but the Alabama regents wouldn't approve the hire?
You are correct. They were going to pay him $600k until the regents stepped in if memory serves.

This regurgitated thread is downright depressing. We passed on Jimbo Fisher for how much money?
About $200k more. He got $400k to be OC at FSU and Todd Dodge got around hald of that. Not only that, if you recall our coordinators only made $93k at that time. I’m not sure that would have been enough to pull the staff that Jimbo would’ve required to come here. Dodge was making $90k as head coach of Southlake Carroll.

D for disappointing defense
Side note - did any other team have to play the top 4 teams (Tulane, SMU, UTSA,& Memphis? besides us?
Rice played the top 3 in succession. I don’t put Memphis in the same class as UTSA, SMU, and Tulane. I expect SMU to beat them this week.

Miss State fired their FIRST full YEAR HFC (Zach Arnett) who won a bowl last year but is 4/6 this year.
One off scenario. They only fired him because they were forced to hire someone on staff last year. It is not good optics to fire the entire staff because the head coach dies. This year they can conduct an actual search for Leach’s replacement.

BECAUSE
HE SHOULD HAVE STARTED FPOR US FOR AT LEAST 2 SEASONS...
Are you freaking kidding me? He had a decent season in D2 and now he should’ve been our starter? The kid was a leader and a great teammate but he does NOT have a D1 arm. He absolutely lacked the velocity to be a starter at this level. He was offered to try and woo his teammate Garrison Johnson. Martin had a nice deep ball, that was it. He couldn’t force the ball into tight windows against a D1 secondary. Although it was frustrating with their decision making at times, Aune and Ruder had substantially better arm strength to fit the ball into those windows.
It is nice that Kason had his team out to a 7-0 start this season. He is a good dude. He was replaced by quarterback Keegan Ray on October 21. I don’t know if that is due to injury or not but Kason hasn’t been their guy as of late.

I’m not part of that, just remembering what his dad had said during the quarterback battle in the spring/fall.

We all know this season has been a disappointment, but I do have hope that we are going to get some players from the portal/JUCO ranks. So with that being said, who are we losing this off-season? Most of our OL and WRs are returning. Our defense is losing a few bodies, but as we all know, we need new players on the defense. I thought we were losing more on the offensive side of the ball, but I guess that's not the case. It's been mentioned numerous times, but we need to make sure that Maclin and Rogers stay here next year. We need a new LS and Kicker. Hopefully we are able to find these in the portal as well. So while I'm annoyed how the season went, we are not losing a ton of players. I do feel for a few of these guys. It's a shitty way to end a senior season. At least some had success over the years playing for us.
Offense:
LT Kaci Moreka
C/G Daizon Carroll
WRs Roderic Burns and Kaylon Horton
Defense:
DE Mazin Richards
DE Kadren Johnson
LB Carson Kropp
LB Kevin Wood
LB/QB Jace Ruder
CB John Davis
CB Tarik Luckett
Special Teams:
LS JP Hadley
K Noah Rauschenberg
I don’t know if he would come back anyhow but Jace Ruder does have one more year of eligibility.

Serious question because I don’t know and I guess you may not either depending upon how long you’ve lived there. Have they always had those expectations or did the higher expectations come with the success they found under Peterson?
Not only Peterson but the guys before him like Hawkins and Koetter.

Boise doesn’t have that much money. 🤷🏻♂️
I know that. I’m saying they had a string of successful coaches that were hired away that built on top of what their predecessors had done. Unless you inject your program with T Boone type money to fast track things, it is a crap shoot on your hires until you find the success that Boise did with coaches being hired away.

And this is why we are mediocre.
Because the coaches we have fired weren’t as good as the ones Boise had hired away? Until you drop Boone Pickens money it’ll be a crap shoot until we hit Boise level success. While Dickey was winning Sun Belt titles, Dan Hawkins had Boise consistently ranked in the top 20 while compiling 1 loss seasons and WAC titles. It has only gotten worse since. I guess by your logic we should have fired Dickey during the conference championship run because of expectations.

Andy Avalos (one of their own) got fired today following a 41-14 win from last night. They are 5-5 on the year and he holds a 22-14 record going into his third year. Last year he went 10-4. Worst full year was first where he went 7-5.
This is something UNT would NEVER do. We would extend a lifetime tenured contract with those results. But I love that BSU has that little thing called standards.
Meanwhile we have people here thinking we should retain coaches who oversee statistically the worst units of our program in FBS (and arguably in our history of our program at that).
Don’t be ridiculous. If we had the level of success that Boise has had over the last 25 years then of course we would have similar expectations but expectations have to be grounded in reality. We just fired the guy with the highest win percentage of any coach since Hayden Fry because he elevated the expectations of this program. Now we are expecting more from Morris than Littrell was able to achieve and hopefully more still from Morris’ successor but don’t get crazy thinking that we have anywhere close the level of success that Boise has had from which to set our expectations.

We have had 4 coordinators who are known around here for being the worst of the worst over the last 20 years. Mendoza, Cosh, 2nd stint Bowen, and Caponi. Mendoza, Cosh, and 2nd stint Bowen were all one and done that were fired after that single season. Caponi should join them.

I am not saying he is a success. But it is beyond stupid not to expect some growing pains this year. Last year's team wasn't good. And arguing going forward with an offensive head coach who couldn't figure out the QB position in 4 years isn't smart. So fire Morris before season over who can you afford to replacement him with? Not only that putting myself in the position of any of the staff you might want to retain, I am leaving and telling everyone this is an all the sudden arrogant but trash program who doesn't have a clue. This team with all it's flaws this year is 3-4 plays from winning those close games. So instead of 7 losses we have 4 or 5
It isn't excuses but suggesting firing a head coach before 18 months on the job it just silly when there weren't lofty expectations of this team before the hire was made.
You do realize that expectations are the reason Eric Morris was hired in the first place. Seth Littrell had to win the conference title in order to keep his job for another season. He fell short. You are now saying we shouldn’t even expect Morris to continue getting us in bowl games?

The following is a statistical breakdown of some of the most incompetent Mean Green defenses in recent years. With three games left in the 2023 season, is Matt Caponi's defense going to be the worst?
2007 (Ron Mendoza) 2015 (Chris Cosh) 2020 (Clint Bowen) 2023 (Matt Caponi)
Rushing Defense (national ranking) 115/119 teams 119/127 teams 124/127 teams 130/130 teams
Pass Defense 95 107 93 46
Total Defense 113 119 127 130
Scoring Defense 119 121 125 126
Sacks 107 100 70 123
Tackles for Loss 103 91 91 124
12 games 12 games 10 games 9 games
The only statistic Caponi has in his favor is pass defense. But I would argue that's only because the rush defense is so horrible there is no need for opposing teams to throw the ball that often. A breakdown of opponent's plays through nine games this season shows a total of 412 rushing attempts vs. 248 passing attempts
I was thinking and just remembered that 3 of these 4 defensive coordinators did not survive to the following season. The 4th? I guess we will know in the coming months.

Everything you cited is an indictment of the UNT program not just Coach Morris. This program is &$?!* garbage and has been for 25 freaking years but now you’re on your high horse defending Seth as some kind of savior. 🙄 He wasn't close to winning a conference with UTSA as it top team. Now we have to contend with Memphis, Tulane and several other programs that historically better funded than the best of the CUSA programs we left behind.
We beat FIU with Seth here and no QB. No passing game and a defense hopefully better than 100th in FBS. Yes that really sounds like a winner in AAC.
We played Memphis last year, so what. What has Morris done outside of one good season at UIW? GJ Kinne picked up where Morris left them and made them even better just like he is doing at Texas State. My bone in this deal is that Morris is supposed to make us better than Littrell, not “as good as” Littrell. His job was to improve us and he is failing miserably. The bar wasn’t to be “just as good” the bar was that we have a .500 bowl team that gets to the conference title game every 4 years, we want you to take them and make them better. He simply has not done that.
