I didn't know Duke had an affiliation, I thought they were just private like Rice.

Yes, they are affiliated with the Methodist Church and also host a distinguished divinity school.

At the risk of sounding like a KIA, Wake Forest is very much a Baptist university rather than Presbyterian.

This type of process requires incredible patience and discipline which we're just not wired for anymore. We want instant results or we run you out of town. I'm not familiar with his work but I looked at his record year-by-year. In '89, App State finished 9-3 and a had first round playoff exit. They wouldn't surpass 8 wins the next 4 seasons, including a 4-7 record record in '93. Many programs today likely would have cut ties then.  Instead, they finally got back to 9 wins in '94 and made it past the first round for the first time of his tenure. It would take 17 seasons to win their first D1-AA championship in 2005.

Admittedly, I don't know if I have the patience for that. The biggest concern IMO is you never know you have the right guy until you accomplish your ultimate goal, whatever that is for your program, and that can be a while - nearly 2 decades apparently.

One has to wonder, would we be doing better if SL didn't know his clock is up at the end of the year, if not sooner? I doubt it but that's also where this gets tricky. You have to be patient and give somebody time to establish that program. Getting a new coach every 5-6 years doesn't allow that to happen. Too much success and your coach might get poached.

Interesting tidbit I learned reading about this guy. His first college headcoaching gig was here at North Texas. One has to wonder...

Moore had only one losing season during his entire tenure at App St. That's pretty remarkable.

For some trivia, Moore is the only North Texas head coach that was not fired since Fry's departure. He left us after two seasons with a .500 record to take Tech's head job.

I saw a Yahoo ranking that after our pounding by SMU we are ranked ! place behind Tulsa and ahead of USF,FAU,Temple,Navy,Charlotte.and Rice. Someone posted statistics that showed in the last 25 years or so we lost 60% of our games. I am nearly 80 and have followed Eagle football since my freshman year 1961. After Fry left in the late 70's we have had a few bright spots under Nelson, Dickey, and Littrell. However, overall we have a sorry football program. We used to blame it on our lack of modern "bricks and sticks" that hampered recruiting but that excuse can no longer be used. Our Women's programs are thriving , as is Men's basketball. However no matter how much money we throw at it our football still sucks and I see no end in site. Regarding our recent 5 bowl appearances, we had two teams that played with losing records, and the other 3 got beaten handily. I summary, I see no end in site.

You have ten years on me but our pain is shared. And you are correct, our program is cursed, and while I would like to see improvements, there are no great expectations. Still, we are both here and wanting the best for our program.

After the departure of former conference mates Houston and Memphis (!!), the AAC may not be so bad for us. As you say, there will be plenty of teams at our level so while we will not necessarily be at the top, we also should not be at the bottom every year.

I understand the fact that the kids need to be compensated. However I'm guessing an SMU full ride with all the benefits is probably worth $60,000 a year. So don't say they're not getting something out of it. Also, it is a little ironic that SMU fan is now coming out almost bragging about the fact that they've been paying for players for years.  So your pride factor is not in the fact that your school can build a program you're in a fortunate situation where you have alumni that can pay for players. So yes it is ironic in a way that the SMU way of pay for your way and never earn it benefits in the new era of NIL

On the CBS broadcast last night, the commentator said each SMU player was receiving at least 36,000.

  5. Speaking of student loan forgiveness, the NY Times published a very interesting article concerning the salaries of college graduates after a specific number of years. What a study found is that a great many grads do not make as much as the average high school graduate (28,000).

If you download the spreadsheet, you will see that about 75% of UNT grads make more than a HS grad. This is somewhat lower than our peer institutions like Houston and Tech and a great deal lower than schools like UT, SMU, and A&M.

If there is an upside, we are in good company. There are many schools, well-known and not so well-known, doing much worse.

"prioririty"?  Someone should have proof-read their invitation before sending it out.

Also, I disagree that "This (NIL) is by far today's biggest prioririty(sp) in attracting and retaining athletic talent..."

The biggest priority for these mega-donors should be finding a quality Head Football Coach that can attract and evaluate talent and properly utilize it on the field.  UNT has that in basketball with Grant McCasland.

I am usually reluctant to criticize things like this, but that is a poorly written announcement.  If we are going to competeat with other universities, we need to do more better.

  7. This is such a typical North Texas decision.

We do one thing better than any other university in the world and this is our jazz studies program. But now, rather than showcase this success, we decide to change formats to indie music? How many of these stations already exist in DFW?

Here in Durham, NC Central University manages to run a very successful jazz station. And we cannot?

If this indie format does not work, we can always try "easy listening".  People my age like that very much.

UT and TAMU have WAY more money than Bamer.  They get some type of oil fund here in the state that no other college gets a piece of.  Bama has to recruit students from out of state and gets mainly kids that can't get into UT and TAMU.  Quite frankly Bama is a crappy academic school in a very crappy state.

I used to live in Montgomery many years ago and people there would often say, "if it wasn't for Mississippi, we'd be last."
