I'm trying to remember when the suit and tie thing went out of fashion.  I feel like even 15-20 years ago you'd still see a Michigan State get off wearing them before a game.  The TV would show the squad as they entered the arenas all decked out.

Basketball coaches were about the last ones to wear coats and ties to their games but I have not seen a coach in a tie for several years now.  Football coaches abandoned suits many years ago.

I believe that I'd check out places in Virginia near Chesapeake Bay.  If you do, please let us know if reason finally took over.

I ended up at the Hilton Garden Inn on Truman Parkway which is about 4 miles away from the stadium. With my senior discount, it was 342/night.  As you say, there are less expensive options if you are willing to drive an hour or so.

    Hope to see you there!

I just cannot recall a better football schedule in the of the program.  Cal at home?  That's maybe the 2nd P5 we ever had in Apogee.  Trips to New Orleans and Annapolis are awesome destinations.  Only bad part is we don't get to play in Houston this year.

I just tried to book a room at the Annapolis Mariott for the game but the rate was $948 per night!

  4. There are many good suggestions to be found in this thread. Winning constantly will help but not completely cure the problem. There is also the issue of declining attendance across all of football, even the big boys. I can go to any UNT away game and see nothing but empty seats...MTSU, Charlotte, ODU, etc.

I will agree with NorthTexasWeLove on one thing, it seems that UNT almost has an open admission policy.  Last I saw, the admissions rate was about 85%.  When a decision to attend any given university is made due to convenience and ease, rather than desire and hard work, the student body is bound to be less than enthusiastic about campus life, no matter sports, cultural events, or whatever else.

My wife has worked at Duke for 25+ years and I sometimes enjoy attending one of their football games.  In years past, they would average paid attendance at around 15K. Actual attendance was much less. You may enjoy taking a look at what they did to increase attendance from 15K to 24.5K in one year.

What I noticed about the . It looks like a good crowd. Did we draw better back then?
Also, was it homecoming or was it just fashionable to dress up for games back then.

Yes, it was common in those days to wear a necktie to a game, especially at the eastern schools.  “Guys in ties, girls in pearls” as we used to say in Virginia.

  6. EZU as we used to call them.

The one big thing they have going for them is fan support. There is literally nothing to do, related to sports, in eastern Carolina and the entire region has embraced the Pirates.

The first time I lived in North Carolina was following my graduation from North Texas in 1975. I was posted to an Air Force base in nearby Goldsboro and dated a young lady who was a student at East Carolina. We attended some football games and while their stadium seated 35,000, it was hard to find tickets. This was all the more impressive as ECU was not playing major college football at that time,

Now, their stadium seats 50,000 and is often sold-out, especially when they are playing other North Carolina universities.
