I'll play or at least try to explain the reaction we observe.  Can't speak for everyone, but I think most (maybe all) would be absolutely fine with the scenario you lay out above.  I think your real question is why do people react negatively when our players (especially starters/stars) hit the portal, but welcome with open arms players that transfer in.  The latter doesn't need a lot of explanation.  I'll try to dissect the former.

I think the initial visceral reaction when "our players" choose to leave is deeply-rooted in the fragile psyche of the Mean Green fan base.  Those here are passionate about the University of North Texas, want good things for the school, want the athletic teams to be successful and desperately want the recognition that comes with winning and championships.  In the case of athletic success much of that is dependent on the athletes.  They become the vehicle for that recognition.

When athletes choose to come to UNT over other schools it serves as a type of consensual validation of the choice each of us made to attend here.  When those same player spend 3 or 4 years developing their skills, becoming starters or stars on the team, they are seen, rightly or wrongly, as a catalyst that will surely get us over that hump and the recognition we are all starved for.  Plus we get to know them well...they are one of us.  Then on the cusp of everything good that will come next season, they choose to leave.  It's like they are saying they have outgrown us and they cannot get where they want to be if they stay associated with UNT.   For those that are so passionate about North Texas, that's hard to hear and it hurts.  On top of that, throw in the realization that any success that athlete may have in his or her one year at XYZ U will accrue to XYZ U and not North Texas.  That's like rubbing salt in the wound.

Eventually, I think everyone gets over it, but for the long-suffering fan base it's just another hit.  It's a rather ordinary and understandable emotional reaction when you think about it.

This is one of the best and most accurate things ive ever read on this site!

I would think we could get a good showing to the Tech game, better than Arky in 2018. Who here would be interested in staying at the same place if a group discount could be acquired at a reasonable hotel?

The Mean Green Collective is sponsoring a Mean Green Women’s basketball Meet and Greet on February 15, 2024, prior to and during the men’s game at 7pm against the Memphis Tigers at the Super Pit.

The team will be available for autographs and photos throughout the game and will be recognized for their achievements at halftime of the game.  The team will remain at the game for its duration and will mix and mingle with the fans.

This event is free to the public and we encourage you to join us in celebrating an extraordinarily successful season thus far.  You can support the players through our collective at http://www.meangreencollective.com.

    Go Mean Green!

just to clarify, don't the men play Memphis on the 15th?

Jeff Wilson was on sports last night and was shaken and unhappy. He went after 3 P5 QB's -thought he had them and they all turned him down on signing day. So, he's holding next years QB's that are really green (!) and unproven.

Not one smile during the interview :>(

Jeff Wlison? the former MG running back? or did you mean Jeff Traylor...

  6. i say keep Rubin and Nolan out as long as needed to make sure they are 100% for the AAC tourney. Yes i want to beat SMU, Memphis and FAU but our best shot (and honestly only shot now) at the big dance is winning the AAC tourney!

Yes. The train is a good way to go. I took it to one of our football games in Denton a few years ago, and i take the DART train to work daily. I believe the day pass is $8-10 but students should get a discount. As UNTFan23 posted, you take Denton train to Carrollton, but you transfer at the Trinity Mills station to the green line. Take that downtown and transfer to any three of the red, orange or blue lines. Once downtown those lines are pretty frequent (maybe 5 minutes apart). I’d recommend getting off at St Paul or the Arts District stop. St Paul has a 7-11 at that stop if you need to grab anything.

Then take one of those three lines north to SMU/Mockingbird. They have shuttles from there to the campus during the week and Saturday. I’m not sure about Sunday. If not, it is just a 10 minute walk crossing over 75 on Mockingbird to Moody.

took the train in for the football game that was on Friday this last November. no shuttle and every SMU fan i asked at the station ( all 5 of them) said they had never heard of a shuttle from the train station to campus. ended up walking it. it was less then a mile so it wasnt terrible

The student section was half full? Not to start the game. We walked with hundreds of guys from the rec to the game and had to sit near the top of if 217. Now I’m sure there were probably many empty one seats but impossible to find multiple seats by each other anywhere down low 😕

I never said I wasn’t wrong but it didn’t feel less packed. I understand what the numbers say. The OSU game may have just had more single empty seats but it was super loud. We did stay til the end but a lot of guys went back to the rec closer to the end. Idk what it looked like to start or to finish. They had a picture of the game by the doors when you enter. I don’t think it’s there anymore…

the picture by the doors at the pit was of the tech game... not the OSU game
