  1. Kazarova Comeback Notches Tennis Win Over Marquette

    Release: 03/23/2008

DENTON, Texas (3/23/08) – Narine Kazarova took center stage and didn’t disappoint, scoring the clinching win in North Texas tennis’ 4-3 victory over Marquette on Sunday.

With the Mean Green (9-7) and Golden Eagles (7-11) knotted at 3-3, Kazarova rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Marquette’s Rachael Hush to give North Texas its first win this year after losing the doubles point.

“This was a defining moment for us at this point in the season,” said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. “We knew Marquette would come out and play well, but Narine was able to execute on the big stage. Kudos to Narine for standing strong.”

Heading into the match with the Golden Eagles, North Texas was 0-6 when dropping the doubles point, but has now equaled its win total in each of the last two seasons combined with the Easter rally.

Madura Ranganathan, Amy Joubert and Idalina Franca made short work of their opponents in singles action to give the Mean Green a 3-1 lead, but the pressure fell on Kazarova when Shannon MacKenzie and Catalina Cruz fell.

North Texas tennis is in good hands in the upcoming seasons as well, as a Cruz (Soph.), Kazarova (Fr.) and Ranganathan are a combined 28-19 this spring.

The Mean Green returns to action on Friday versus Sun Belt foe ULM on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

I do not know how good Marquette is, but matching our win total from the last two years combined is definitely something to be happy about. Go Mean Green!

  2. Ladies lost to #44 FIU 6-1 with Madura taking out another nationally ranked player. The other singles matches were not even close score wise. The doubles point was won by FIU talking #1 and #3, while Wilhelm/Cruz won at #2. The ladies will need to win out in order to get the #4 seed at the Conference tournament.

They play Marquette at home at 2PM on Easter Sunday. Hopefully some of the locals could make this match.

How do they determine the seeding? Is it like the NCAA tournament, where they look at the resume, or just by conference record?

  3. ---In case you haven't noticed... you are on the basketball thread, this is not a football thread.. If UTA pulls it off, they will be the first ever #16 to defeat a #1 seed ...Some day it will happen. Good luck . Marquette, Gonzaga, George Mason, Georgetown, and some others have very good basketball programs but don't have football programs either.

In case you didn't notice, this was moved from the football board to the basketball board, and was on the football board when I posted that. You might want to check your facts before you make it sound like I am stupid. Second, I was referring to our athletics as a whole. So I think it definitely pushes our athletics above theirs since we have football. Thanks for your concern though.

  4. First of all...WE ARE NOT A FREAKING COMMUTER SCHOOL. We have somewhere around 7000 people living on campus, and many more have houses right around campus. I want to know what Univeristy of 35,000 houses its entire student body on its campus.

Also thank you to NTTV for making us being the third largest in Texas such a positive. I see they have adopted the positive attitude that Brett Vito manages to maintain.

I agree, if you go to school here and you don't like it, please leave! Just like chrisfisher, UNT was my FIRST choice... for my undergrad and I will be proud to hold my Business Degree from our darn good school.

Lastly, our Political Science department is a reason to be here! Negate in your mind what that girl said in the story.

    Go Mean Green!

  5. Haha, you guys crack me up. I think that a lot of the reason that more students don't show up for games is because they simply don't know about them and in the end, only a certain number of students are basketball fans or sports fans in general. I think that having a Pit Crew leadership that consults with the leaders and Pit Crew alums of past years as well as the Super Pit management and the athletic department in general is the first step toward creating a sports environment that more students can come and enjoy. Getting more students to games is a goal of mine, but getting the students that already come to stand up and be a loud and imposing force on the opposing team is another issue I want to tackle. I want students to come to games not just to fill seats but to be loud and spirited as well.

I'm with you Thomas. Go Mean Green!

  6. Mean Green Matt:

Player Bio: In credit hours a freshman at North Texas, but a lifelong fan of the program, playing in GMG Bowl V would fulfill his lifelong dream to play in a football game at Fouts Field. Seeing the stands off in the distance would bring chills to his spine. Filled with green blood from previous generations, at 6'1" 165, Matt would be best placed at a defensive back position or receiver. Speedy and Elusive, the 19 year old could be a sleeper....

Positives: Fairly quick. 4.6 forty in high school (might not have been exactly forty yards, but close), Young. Energetic.

Negatives: So skinny the flag belt might not fit...

Draft Prediction: No clue, hopefully in the middle.

    Shirt Size: Medium

  7. There has been, I believe it was 2004 or 2005. There will likely not be again if the Sun Belt's Hot Springs, AR experiment turns out good. We played Arkansas State in the first round of the one we hosted and lost, and the crowd was not even as good as our regular season games this year.

My two cents is that the higher seeded team should have home court all the way through, no host site. I think that makes for a more exciting tournament overall.

  8. You guys have followed this part much closer than I. If we do not win the West will we necessarily have a HOME first round game? Is there any chance that we would have to play an AWAY game before the Mobile part of tournament starts?

From what I can tell, if we lose our last two, there are scenarios that would put us at a 9 seed, resulting in an away game. I may be wrong, but pretty sure.

Here it is. USA, WKU, MTSU are on top of us for good. FAU from the east could win out and end 9-9. If we lose the next two, we end 9-9, and FAU has the tiebreaker.

Likewise, worst case the West would end up as this:

    ULL 10-8

    UALR 10-8

    Denver 10-8

    UNO 9-9

    UNT 9-9

Keep in mind, this would take a long list of very specific wins and losses to occur in the Belt. One win for us agains ULL or UNO and we see another game at the pit. Two wins for us and a UALR loss and we sit at a 2 seed in Mobile.

  9. It was actually a North Texas Cop, and I was just talking to the guy, not arguing or anything. I thought the cop was joking, but he wasn't.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure we needed LaLa to win tonight, UALR has to lose to either Denver or La Monroe for us even have a mathematical chance to win the West.
