  1. We just witnessed one of the two best played games of the year and it spawned one of the dumbest threads of the year. Thompson doesn't play anymore and had absolutely nothing to do with this or any other games this year. Some of you would be down on any qb, NT has ever had. Maher, Davis, Ramsey, Carlin, Hall, Case, etc.; all had bad games and lots of bad plays.

NT won a game, something I doubted would happen after the first half of the season. With the QB performances NT has had this year, I was happy with what I saw Saturday. It was not great, but it led to the best victory of the year. I wish some of you would pick another position other than QB to analyze. I am sure you would find plenty to criticize with any other player and at least it would be a change.

    Amen!!

Who cares how we won??? It's a much needed win that could lead to another one next week. Instead of being happy about a 20 point victory we're upset because our QB didn't put up Bryce Petty type stats? Seriously?

I'm not a Mini-Mac fan, but unlike others here, I'm not rooting against him. I don't really care who plays QB as long as were winning. And I don't care if the defense, running game, and special teams are more responsible for the wins than the QB.

Would have rather have had these stats? 15/21 219 1TD 0 INT That's Nick Marshall. Loss

    How about: 20/37 291 2 1? Jake Waters. Loss

    Or: 36/49 248 0 1? Clint Trickett. Loss

    I could continue...

  2. I'm sorry, but no. The top 5 teams from the SEC will beat the top 5 from the Big12.

    Miss St v KState--Miss St

    AU v TCU-- AU

    Alabama v OU--Bama

    Ole Miss v Baylor--Ole Miss

    UGA (w/ Gurley) v whoever else--Georgia.

Big12 might win one of those, maybe. The middle of the pack to bottom of the SEC would slaughter the middle of the pack to bottom Big12. The Big12 really has to add a couple more universities to their conference. 10 just isn't going to get it done long term.

The SEC might win every one of those games, but I think they'd all be good games. Thus my stance that the SEC isn't "way more stout" than the Big 12 (or the Pac 12).

If I'm being honest, I think 5 evenly matched games like the ones you listed would probably result in a 2-3 record for one conference and a 3-2 record for the other. None of the games should be blowouts barring unlikely circumstances.

Also, Georgia vs. W. Va. is hardly a gimme for the SEC.

Kind of hard to compare "middle of the pack" since the SEC has so many more teams, but are you really confident that Vandy would easily handle Kansas or Iowa St.? I might give you Kansas because they're pretty weak, but I'll take Iowa St. over Vandy.

  3. Mississippi State didn't start the season off as a top ten team, like Baylor was. Also, playing Alabama, Auburn, LSU, A&M, Arkansas, and Ole Miss is way more stout than playing this year's Big XII. MSU could afford a weaker OOC schedule when you play in the best division in the country.

Not sure what Miss. St. not starting the season as a top team has to do with it.

And I don't think I'd say the SEC West is "way more stout" than the Big 12. Auburn was lucky to beat K. St. on a night when K.St didn't play well. OU is currently 5th place in the conference and they should have beaten K.St. on a night when they didn't play great (and missed a 19 yd field goal that would have won the game). In addition, OU beat Tennessee worse than any SEC school besides Ole Miss.

Give me the top 5 teams from each conference and I'll take my chances that the Big 12 doesn't embarrass itself...which would surely be the case if the SEC was way more stout than the Big 12.

  4. Strength of schedule must not be THAT important. All of the undefeated teams are ranked ahead of the 1 loss teams, all 1 loss ahead of 2 loss, etc. East Carolina and Duke are the only exceptions to this.

To me there are several 1 loss teams that have played a much more difficult schedule than Fla. St., but they aren't ranked ahead of them. This tells me that wins are more important than SOS.

These team are obviously down the rankings, but I'm way more impressed with 2 loss teams, OU, LSU, and K.St. than I am with 1 loss Ohio St. Check out that Ohio St. schedule and make a list of schools who'd be undefeated playing that gauntlet. I'm thinking the top 5-6 Big 12 teams, 6-7 SEC teams, and 5-6 Pac 12 teams could easily be undefeated playing that weak schedule.

  5. Coffee and TV, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the SEC. And wait until bowl season when they play a couple of ACC teams, a couple of AAC teams, a couple of Big Ten teams. They'll have a great record because they play those conferences while the Big 12 and Pac 12 play each other 3-4 times. Look up the bowl schedule from last year and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I'm not sold on the whole strength of schedule thing based on Florida St. Nothing about their schedule is all that great. Barely beat the 6th best team in the Big 12.

And I understand that you probably can't look at how a team won or lost a game, but K-St. played a terrible game and still nearly beat Auburn. I bet it's the worst game K-St. has played all season. And then OU plays a bad game and still nearly beats K-St.

This would all seem to indicate that I think the Big 12 is the best conference, but that's not true. I think the SEC is probably the best, but it's not like the media (and most fans who listen to the media) would have you believe. I honestly don't think the gap between the SEC, Big 12, and Pac 12 is that great.

  6. Not a DT fan, but if you don't think we'd be a better team with him at QB then I'm not sure what you're watching. He wasn't great, but he was a heck of lot better than anything we're putting behind center this year.

Did you see the Indiana game? The '85 Bears defense wouldn't have helped us win. Pretty much the same against UAB. The defense can't defend against a Pick 6 or a very short field.

  7. Appreciate the comments owl40. It seems as though the opposition sees the same thing as many UNT fans.

I pretty much agree with your entire post. Take away the first couple of minutes of the 2nd half and today would have been a different game. Only problem for us is that it's becoming a common theme to give up points in bunches off of turnovers. Our defense has been far from great, but fumbling a kickoff and then giving up a pick six is tough on any D.

  8. Zach Orr- playing in the NFL. Great leader

Trice- lot or heart fire passion.

    Sarge- grown man

    Abbe- had a great year

    Wright- made plays

    Chancellor- PLAYMAKER

We didn't lose great players. We lost great players who played special teams and were leaders on and off the field.

Here is the answer you seek.

I'd include DT to the list not because he was great, but very good and a significant upgrade to anything we can roll out there. I was honestly never a big DT fan, but I don't think were 2-6 if he were the QB this year.

  9. No reason NOT to see more of Wilson from here on out .. And where the heck is Evans.. I've seen enough of the veteran RB who can't stay on his feet for more than 2 yards at a time. It's all about the future from here on out

Agree 100%. Why have we wasted their freshman years? What have they gotten, 10 carries each the whole year?

  10. McNulty is not good, but Dajon is not appreciably better. Take away the Nicholls State game, and you have a QB who gives us 2 TDs and 3 TOs per game (not the other way around). I suppose I'd rather see Dajon starting, because he brings more potential to the table. But ultimately . . .

    It just doesn't matter.

    We have a winner!

  11. He's never been good enough to be outright given the job without it being too obvious. Even this year he wasn't good enough to take over for Greer... But as soon as a freshman makes freshman mistakes in a throw away season....

Then I guess the QB's that were given the starting job ahead of him should have produced and he would kept his rightful place on the bench.

I'm no McNulty fan, but it's ridiculous to say he was given the job because of his relationship to the coach. He was 3rd string and neither guy ahead of him was able to keep the job. I'm betting if he has a game like Dajon did against either Indiana or UAB he will be replaced.

The Fake Lonnie Finch is spot on: the coaches are sabotaging themselves so that McNulty can play QB? WOW!

  12. We are starting the 3rd team QB, ya know.

Yeah, I almost put that in my reply. Honestly didn't think about it with my initial post, but I got what you meant

At least with Dodge it was due to injury instead of just not having a QB. We basically have (3) 3rd string QB's though I would argue that DW has the potential to be much more than that. McNulty and Greer...not so much.
