  1. I hate the Steelers and watched with great glee when they were called for running into the kicker, giving the Titans another shot at the FG.

To me, it's always a great day in pro-football when the Steelers, 49ers, Raiders and Packers lose. rolleyes.gif

It's always a great day in college football when Notre Dame, SMU, and Penn State lose......and sometimes OU rolleyes.gif

  2. "I don't recall ANY past AD's getting out selling the program in the past."

Hayden Fry made this sort of effort, but probably not as much as RV (I think Fry had "other duties" besides AD). During the Fry tenure, I seem to remember that the promotions director organized a caravan that included cheerleaders, and spirit group members, that went around to the various local communities in the spring. They would set-up on the squares and make the community aware of the fall schedule of games, and the season ticket packages.

Oh yeah, by their presence, they also let the community know that North Texas wanted and appreciated their support of the school and it's athletic program.

  3. " The alumnas of TWU (the very very very very rich alumnas of TWU) will never stand for the two universities to be merged."

I knew that there were very "vocal" (GOD! are they VOCAL) and "influencial" alumni of TWU, but I didn't know there were any very very....etc. rich ones.

Once men were allowed to regularly attend at TWU, the justification to call it "TWU" became moot. My wife is a TWU graduate and she essentially dis-owned them after men were allowed to attend, rather than the "special circumstances", as it was in the past.

We'll see about the "merging" issue, when the next state educational funding crisis "hits the fan". cool.gif

  4. Don't we have an agreement with TWU to let some of the overflow students in various departments attend classes there. I don't mean Eaglechick, but some of what you (shaneb) referred to as the "less serious" students.

If this continues to be a problem "across the board", then the issue of "merging" UNT and TWU might come up again. And sooner than some people think.

  5. I have been in a band and I am completely sympathetic about the uniform issue. Texas weather and "traditional" band uniforms are a formula for a potential disaster. I think that Green polo-type shirts and tan or gray shorts is more appropriate for early in the football season, than the traditional uni's. And to complete the outfit, maybe even some caps with "NORTH TEXAS GREEN BRIGADE" embroidered on them.

We need to start talking about this again in early spring. I think the weather is getting more fall-like. rolleyes.gif

  6. "Greeks are not atheltic supporting orgamizations. They are social clubs for networking and getting laid. That is all, nothing more, nothing less."

Am I the only one that noticed this quote? You know, if you're going to admit to shallow motivations of the greek system, you could have at least included "getting drunk" between "networking" and "getting laid". Or you could have put it before "networking". Just a suggestion.

And later in the same post...

"Our priorities were on tons of other things except winning the homecoming float parade competition..."

In light of the first quote, were those priorities "doing tons of networking" and "getting laid tons of times?" Thanks to you, altruism has a new meaning. cool.gif

  7. Yes, I noticed them. Hopefully the next time you fly green flags, they will be much more in line with the school colors.

And before someone else mentions it, I also notice the flags that the TCU band was flying.........and I don't care!

TCU doesn't have school pride issues and we do. I still content that we need to fly the school colors until such time as that (school pride) is NOT an issue any longer.

By the way. The Green Brigade absoultely kicked-ass last night. Way to go guys!!!!

  8. "You mean big time Alabama's band used flags that were not consistent with their school colors... even worse, they used the colors of the opposing team that they were playing and opposing teams next oppenents (that's UNT and TCU). How can a school with soooo much tradition and pride (hell, didn't forest gump even play there) have the audacity to allow there flag corps to use non red and white flags... let alone ones that didn't feature the Red Tide's mascot. It just turns my stomach that schools like that can function in this great football nation with such apathy from their band. For shame 'Bama Band... for shame!!!"

I find it interesting and somewhat disappointing (not that it matters to you that much) that you finally acknowledge what the basic issue is about the flags,...but only in the vein of heavy adolescent sarcasm.

Most posters in this thread (mainly in the band) seem to have gone out of their way to avoid the main issue, and try to manipulate it into "perceived" or "alleged" personal attacks on them. Which is why this thread has gone on waaaaaaaayyyy too long. Let me try and re-state my stance on this....hopefully for the last time.

All of these statements begin with "In my humble opinion".

    1. like it or not, the band is a "spirit organization 1st and a musical organization 2nd" (I believe it's motto used to be "The show window of university SPIRIT and PRIDE)

    2. You show the aforementioned spirit and pride for your University by PROUDLY displaying the traditional colors, and playing the traditional songs of the school. To do otherwise shows disrespect to the university and all of it's alumni.

    3. "Artistic license" or "Artistic interpretation" is NOT a valid reason to suspend any of the aforementioned traditions of this or any other school.

    4. the Green Brigade is musically superior to any other college band in Texas.....and probably in the United States. That will not matter however, if this football program goes away, or is greatly reduced in importance, and the band therefore loses it's main "venue". Texas Tech may be "junior high" compared to the Green Brigade, but they WERE on regional TV.

    5. the Green Brigade may have won all of their half-time shows, but other than the parents of the band members, and a few thousand of us appreciative fans (myself included), not too many people really care.

    6. There is NOTHING mutually exclusive about being musically superior (and creative) and honoring your school and it's traditions.

USING FLAGS THAT ARE THE TRADITIONAL SCHOOL COLORS WILL NOT SUDDENLY RENDER YOU MUSICALLY (OR ARTISTICALLY) BRAIN-DEAD.

    I promise. wink.gif

  9. "I think that it all goes back to many people's unwillingness to accept anything different than what they think. You think that the flag corp should use YOUR flag and thats it. "

You know Shaneb, this isn't about you and the occasional attack on the NTD. I explained this long ago in the beginning of the thread. It's about school spirit and having pride in your school. It's really a basic issue.

North Texas is perceived by the general public as having no school spirit. One of the ways that you show your school spirit is "proudly display the colors". When you do that you clearly convey that you have pride in your school. Our colors happen to be green and white. When any spirit organization (face it, the Green Brigade is a spirit organization FIRST and a band second) displays a hodge podge of colors in it's public performance, it sends a message that spirit is not important.

This is also not about the amount of hours that the band puts in for the game. There are lots of people that put in a lot of hours for this school, including the various teams.

I'm wondering how you would feel if the football team showed up with green helmets and jerseys and orange or purple pants?

  10. "Having flags the same color as your uniform is foolish. The idea is for them to be seen and blending in is a bad idea. Compound that with the fact the field is green and green flags are just a bad idea. These students work very hard during the week to present a show at halftime and there hard work should be seen.

A good solution to the school spirit issue would be to have UNT flags for when the band enters, or leaves the field plus pre-game even but let them show off their hard work during their half time show."

    Christ. <_<

  11. "(front)I'm in the band...

    (back)and I still like NT! "

    or

    (front) I'm in the band...

(back) "And I still wear green".

    or

    (front) I'm in the band...

(back) Kick me if I'm NOT wearing green.

Seriously, and this is not directed at you bandgeek.

How many other Universities that have exsisted for 112 years, and have had a football team for almost 90 years, have to struggle with the issue of school spirit and flying the school colors. (sigh) sad.gif

  12. MGF,

I'm not sure what it means either, but I suspect that it might mean that someone (yet again) just doesn't "get it" about our concerns. If I had to guess about the "reaction" that we will get from the music department, I would speculate that it will be something along the lines of "why are those people trying to meddle in things that they obviously know nothing about?".

People at Universities can get real territorial, especially when they've been left alone to do whatever they please for decades.

This is not a "school of music vs the athletic dept. issue", and this is not a "winds studies vs the meddling masses issue". It is an issue of "school pride" and "school spirit", and the symbolism thereof. As intelligent and talented as the students and staff are in the school of music, it just blows me away that they don't understand (or worse, are indifferent to) such a basic concept.

We have been struggling with the issue of "school pride" and "school spirit" for decades. The Band (for whatever reason) has taken upon itself to fly flags on a regular basis that are NOT the North Texas school colors. At every game that I have attended, both home and away, I have noticed that THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT EVER DO THAT.

It doesn't look "cool" to the North Texas fans. It looks like the Band could care less about school pride, and it also conveys a certain amount of arrogance on the part of the school of music. The same message gets conveyed to every new student that comes to a North Texas game for the first time, and the second time etc etc..........

If displaying the school colors is not important, then why wear green and white uniforms? Why wear uniforms at all? Why not just show-up in whatever happens to be clean in the band members closets on any given game day.

Mean Green Fanatic, I see you and Bandgeek as some of the best fans from the school of music that I have seen in years.....possibly ever. This years Green Brigade is one of the most spirited ever. I just wish the "symbolism" matched the "enthusiasm".

  13. A friend of mine who was in the Marine artillery in Viet Nam, voted for "Full Metal Jacket" as the most realistic depiction of Marine boot camp. He thought that the depiction of the actual war in Full Metal Jacket was pretty accurate, but Platoon was just a little better.

If you want to see Mel Gibson in a completely different role, I highly recommend "Signs". wink.gif

  14. Shaneb,

I agree that "imbecile" and other negative words are an inappropriate reaction to the article. I understand the frustration behind those comments however. Ever since Hayden Fry left, I have watched North Texas be ignored, misrepresented, trivialized, and just generally made the butt of the local media's jokes....... with no one holding them accountable for it.

I understand completely what this young man was doing. He was writing what he thought was a fair analytical piece that will go in his portfolio. He will show this to some editor where he is applying for a job, to demonstrate how truely "professional" and "balanced" he is.

I think that his timing was not exactly ideal, but again, I do understand his motivation.

Now. Having said all that, I will also say that there are more than enough "media" people, both paid, and on staff at the UT paper, that will fall all over themselves to "fawn" and "pander" to the mighty UT sports ego that Chris Simms represents.

I hope that the young man writing the article isn't fooling himself into thinking that all the Texas fans out there are taking his analysis to heart, or even care about his opinion for that matter.

His writing about what he considers to be an unfair reaction by the Texas fans to Chris Simm's performance, only serves to (once again) trivialize our team's efforts.

I don't think you have a clue about how frustrating that situation is to us long standing (and long suffering) North Texas fans. Schools like Texas and Oklahoma, Notre Dame etc. etc. etc. adnauseam, have media people writing an article, or putting a "note" in the sports section of every newspaper, any time some athlete on those above mentioned schools so much as gets a hangnail, or passes gas. It distresses me when our (alleged) "professionals in training" at the Daily choose to join that common herd of media people.

"However, I am sick of trying to explain it. "

Shaneb, don't give up. Just try to be less condescending in your explainations. cool.gif

  15. I re-visited this issue with my wife (a TWU Graduate). She said that TWU referred to A&M as "our brother school", and they were encouraged to fraternize with A&M students, both that was just about it. She said that as far as she knew they were never part of the A&M system, they just shared a common tradition of gender-specific enrollment. TWU's school colors are also the same as A&M's.

I would think that if the numbers mentioned earlier about North Texas being 125% booked on class-room space and TWU being 68% are accurate, it wouldn't take much of a push to merge these schools. Besides, I anticipate that this is going to be a very tight legislative session coming up, and merging TWU and UNT would be the perfect solution to funding the continued North Texas growth.

  16. "TWU has been talking to A&M about absorbing them. A&M wants them, and they do share a history. "

As I mentioned earlier, my wife is a TWU graduate. The only history between TWU and A&M that she shared with me was the tradition of selecting the A&M homecoming queen from TWU. That stopped after A&M went co-ed. Other than their traditions of having a male-only and female-only student body (which no longer exsist), I am not aware of any other "history" between them.

I don't know it for sure, but I got the feeling that TWU felt rather spurned when A&M stopped selecting the homecoming queen from TWU.

I don't know of any benefit to TWU in merging with A&M. In either case (merging with A&M or merging with UNT) they would eventually lose their name identity. They would lose it much faster with A&M. Just like ETSU, WTSU, and Texas A&I did. North Texas might be more flexible on that issue.

  17. Reb, to present a calmer response to your question. It was pointed out many years ago that the "rationale" for an all-female state-supported school has become outdated. That issue was dealt with loooong ago with A&M. TWU alums are very passonate about their school, and would strongly resist merging it with North Texas. My wife is a TWU alum, and she has been very passonate about her school for years. She became less so in recent years when it became known to her several years ago that one of the editors of the school newspaper was a male.

It's a pretty touchy issue with TWU alums, especially since there has been some less than kind comments exchanged between the students of UNT and TWU through the years. I admire the "passion" and "devotion" that TWU graduates have for their Alma Mater. A quality that I wished more UNT alums had.

As you know, the bottom line on that issue is how much political clout the TWU alums continue to have in the legislature.

  18. Sorry Ironman. I don't own a scanner. The only "scrappy" sticker that I have is the one that I used to make a wall clock. I could take it out to be scanned, but I don't know anyone that has a scanner. Surely there is a web-site that has those "classic" images. cool.gif
