Lets see, now where did I put that crucifix and holy water........

Do you think I can walk into Wal-mart and tell some 15 year old kid all my problems and compaints with Wal-Mart?
Wal-Mart can't hire 15 year olds.
Hmmmmm, I wonder if exposing this thread to sunlight might do the trick.

I can't quite decide. Do I need a wooden stake or a silver bullet for this thread........or possibly both.
-
OHMYGOD! It's the "Night of the living Dead-Thread".
-
Second team SLB - Ilias Simpson, 6'4" and 184lbs!?!?!?. Good God! That's too skinny for a WR,........ much less a LB.

"It will hurt more than some at least the way this guy was coming on strong in the last 3 games. It is definitely time for some others to step up at this position!!"
What (or who) you are alluding to is not as devistating as what I first feared when this thread got started.

"Stop the personal attacks."
I was thinking about making some impersonal ones, but I suppose that is "verboten" as well.
It's really too bad. Someone, who shall remain unnamed (or is that "unnumbered"? )was just about to get himself worked up into a full fledged "Donald-Duck fit".

"But Michael Irvin was framed one year (the year the Cowboys lost to the Panthers in the playoffs) along with another player and the woman got jail time for it."
Yeah, I sort of remember that. I also remember thinking that (considering all of the things that Irvin probably did and was never charged with it) they should just let the girl go home and call it all "even".
-
"It seems kind of fishy...sort of like the girl that tried to frame Michael Irvin several years ago. "
Frame MICHAEL IRVIN?!?!
Good Lord, Michael Irvin didn't need to be framed, he was his own worst enemy. When it comes to Michael Irvin and his off season behavior, my sister might use one her favorite expressions "I don't have to make up lies about (insert name of person here), the truth is bad enough."
I don't think that Kobe would appreciate being compared to Michael Irvin.....and neither would I.

I found the chapter on the school's name change in 1960 especially interesting.
Also, you can find the roots of our schools attitude about sports in those chapters about Dr. Chilton and Dr. Bruce.

"so does that mean TWU is "harbouring terrorists"?"
My wife (a 70 TWU graduate) says that middle-eastern women attended TWU because their families did not want them attending co-ed schools.
-
"ive missed his 'degrading to women' posts,"
I don't seem to recall that either when I read his post. I mainly read them for comic relief........very absurd comic relief at that.
I know that I might get banned for this but,....... since when did a former fraternity member start worrying about the degradation of women?
Just curious.

Believe me, I wouldn't have ordered the DVD from them if I had any other choice. I certainly don't absolve the staff (or management) at the athletic department in this issue......it's just gotten too easy to take shots at them. I just thought that I would take shots (today anyway) at a little more challenging target.

I wonder how many businesses in Austin, College Station, or the Forest Park area of Fort Worth for that matter, have to be "prompted".
My wife and I attended an event in the panhandle last summer, and on the way back, we went to a museum on the West Texas A&M campus. Now, Canyon is not a very big town, but it seemed that everywhere I turned, the word "Buffalo" was on some business there in the town. I wonder if they had to be "prompted" to do that?
-
Rob,
Do any of those businesses that you listed have a banner (ideally in Green and white) outside of their business saying (essentially) "proud sponsor of Mean Green Athletics, or (insert company name here) says "Go Mean Green" etc.......You know, an OUTWARD manifestation of their support of North Texas.
THAT was my point.

I just wanted to add my 2cents about the Denton community discussion.
I don't know what sort of progressive or non-progressive decisions the Denton city fathers/mothers regularly make. I just know that if it weren't for UNT sitting right there on 35 (E&W) you probably wouldn't know that it was there. The businesses in Denton do not "wave the flag" so to speak for one of the biggest source of customers that they have. I find that rather absurd.
Now, I have seen those "light pole banners" go up on University and Carroll street, but BIG DEAL, even the tiny community of Haslett puts "light pole banners" up.

"Initiative 1: Secondary Mascot for the Denton campus
WHEREAS: The Albino Squirrel is unique in the animal kingdom, as is our university one of a kind among Texas public institutions of higher learning; and
WHEREAS: Mascots were originally intended as symbols of hope, good fortune, and campus unity, but have in recent years become franchise symbols devoid of meaning; and
WHEREAS: Eagles are rare, if not totally absent, in the skies of Denton and surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS: The Albino Squirrel has been sighted numerous times in recent years and legends of it abound, its popularity thriving among the student body; and
WHEREAS: Popularity is a fluctuating trend; and
WHEREAS: The student body has a right to have a popular, identifiable, and loveable mascot;
THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED: The following language be added to the Student Government Association Spring Election ballot in 2003 as an officially-binding referendum:
Shall the SGA Constitution be amended by adding to it the following language?
"The student body of North Texas recognizes the Albino Squirrel is the official, secondary mascot of the Denton campus. The Albino Squirrel shall in no way supplant the Eagle or 'Scrappy' as the symbol of the University of North Texas, but shall serve as a popular complement."
Yes No"
Mr. Zambrano, your third premise (or whereas) is inaccurate. Eagles have been taken off the endangered species list, and it has been reported on several occasions in recent years that there are Eagles that winter on the north end of Lake Ray Roberts.
You have presented a very thoughtful (but not very convincing) response to all of our comments(insensitive or otherwise) and concerns. I have posted very early in this thread that I am as fond of "whimsey" as any one else, but "whimsey" is not a good reason to potentially hold the University up to public ridicule. So far, the only thing that you have provided in the way of a reason for doing this is..
"The secondary mascot idea was something that was thought of and decided as funny enough to try."
which I find to be nothing but self-indulgent tripe. You have yet to present any argument/reason as to why this referenda will benefit and enhance the image of the University of North Texas.
So, if you will. Please finish this sentence. "Having the Albino Squirrel as the "secondary mascot" of the University of North Texas will enhance the schools image in the eyes of the general public by..........

Well, we have at least one vote against this proposal. I was filling my son in on the situation so that he would make a mental note to go vote (against of course) in the election/referendum.
After I explained the "proposal" that was filed (it took a couple of times because he just couldn't believe his ears the first time), he made a funny comment. He said "why the hell do they want North Texas to have a secondary mascot? Do those idiots think that the regular one will get hurt and therefore need a stand-in?
He also wondered what an albino squirrel preservation society does. He then wondered if the exsistance of this strange little group meant that all of the disadvantaged children in the city of Denton were fed, clothed, and were all matched up with tutors to help them with their homework.

All this talk about a stupid white squirrel reminds me of a news release that I saw recently.
CANADIANS TO HELP WITH WAR EFFORT
It was announced today that Canada is now prepared to help the United
> States in its war against terrorism.. They have promised to commit 2 of
> their largest battleships, 6,000 armed troops and 60 fighter
> jets........... However...... after the exchange rate, that comes down to
a
> canoe, 2 Mounties and a flying squirrel......
-
Why Hatter, that's a great idea!......and not the least bit MAD!
This would be a sitauation where, by voting in a secondary mascot, the students are providing the main mascot with a snack.
-
"I would love too!! Does anybody know if BB guns are allowed on campus? Call me cold hearted but it's just a squirrel..... I would love to take it out, besides I would be doing it a favor I'm sure all the other squirrels make fun of it because it's white."
Well, that was ......grim.
I was thinking more in terms of someone writing a "guest editorial" that said something like "don't you people have anything better to do........like STUDY!".
-
"We don't need another mascot when a majority of this campus doesn't support the first one."
Totally agree!
"I have as much appreciation for the "whimsical" as any of today's students, but I think that having a "white squirrel" society (with the obligitory t-shirts) is more than sufficient to satisfy anyone's need for "whimsey".
Yes we should attempt to be a "good neighbor" in every sense of the idea to all of Denton...EVEN if most of Denton doesn't like/support the school. And YES I am FOR the building but I am NOT for how we went about it.
I'm pretty sure most of you don't care what my opinion is anyway on most issues judging from the seriousness anything I've ever said on this board is taken but I feel strongly about this issue as a PR major."
Eaglechick, I always value a "non-male" point of view on this board. I think that Pohl may have made a comment that sounded "abrasive" to some people, but the statement is basically true. Those people's property values aren't his responsibility and shouldn't be a consideration in his decision making.
Through the years I have seen this University miss out on soooooo many opportunities because of "indecisiveness" and "lack of vision" on the part of the administrators........but mostly it was "indecisiveness". We now have a President that doesn't suffer from that personality trait, and he is moving forward on a wonderful opportunity for the University. There is just so much smiling and "nodding your head" and "listening to feelings" that a person can do. Dr. Pohl is a busy man (or should be), and there is just a limited amount of "theraputic time" that this guy can give to people who just basically want to whine and talk about their feelings.
I didn't read his statement as being "abrasive" (by that way, that's a "value judgement" word that has no place in a news story headline....unless it's a quote from one of the residents), I read it as being direct and factual.

"That's what they make ad agencies for. "
For what? To sell things to people,...... or to annoy people?
-
I just thought that it was interesting that Dell's sales really picked up after they started their compaign with this guy. To a certain segment of the general public he's always been annoying. And yet Dell's sales went up when they featured him. I suppose that the sales leveled off and that's why they took him out of the commercials, and not for any other reason.
Personally, anyone that punctuates their sentences with "Dude", "Yo" or "like" are (like) extremely annoying to me.

Alma Meter? Is that what a commuter calls his/her school?
If you're such a big-time CU fan, why the hell didn't you go to school there?
In case you don't know it, CU has more than enough fans. And they would never notice it if you stopped being a fan. North Texas might notice however.
Sorry to sound ungracious, but North Texas graduates who are "big-time fans" of other schools really burn me up.
