as much as being able to reject any attemp by SMU to get back into CUSA would be awesome.... we have to let them in.... then they wont have an excuse not to play us anymore.... at least once a year in every sport....i think that may be better than the satisfaction of being able to decline there acceptance....
-
who's your sixth man? is Trey automatic or is PJ taking his spot?
-
okay but based on what you've said.... if we've just added PJ then who's left behind? who"s cut?
-
Someone may have already posted about this, if so, my bad.... With P.J.H. just signing, what do you guys think are starting lineup will look like this fall? 1. Jones 2.? 3.? 4. Mitchell 5.? sixth man:? Thats all i got. This is going to be absolutely nuts... we really do have a lot of talent! GMG!
-
Okay, I think this analogy may help me understand a little better where we stand in all this conference realignment madness.... Lets pretend that CUSA is the NCAA Tournament. and this summer (or however long it takes until we know something) is the final days leading up to the NCAA Tournament. Using this analogy what would UNT be? Last 4 in? On the Bubble? Last 4 out?

Why were we in Mitchell's top 3. Out of all the schools that guy could go to, why were we in his top 3? yes, our program has been pretty good. But we got in Tony's top 3 because of Coach Jones. And so is it absurd to think that one of the reasons why Mitchell liked JJ is becuase he's African-American? umm..... NO!
-
if you got something to say... BRING IT!

I agree with almost everything you have to say. Where we differ is that you say race PROBABLY plays a role in sports...I say OF COURSE it does... Did JJ accomplish a lot while at UNT? Hell yeah he did or wouldn't even be having this conversation. But some of you guys are in straight denial... of course race plays a role in recruiting and in sports in general. No matter what connotation you want to give it, its the truth. And you are correct. Baylor has not historically been a big time program... but we can all agree they've been one recently. And going back to those dark days in the Baylor basketball program with the murder and everything... they had the talent back then. Any time there's a top 10 national player coming out of one of the DFW schools... i guarantee you Baylor is going to recruit that player... along with Texas, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and any other big time school you want to name. UNT will not be going after that player. not somebody that highly ranked. not straight out of HS (maybe one day, but not now) Baylor and UNT's bbal programs are apples and oranges... just a completely different playing field.
-
umm... nowhere in my post did i say JJ only relates to players bc he is black... but if you don't think that race had something to do with it your in denial. I agree, if you can recruit, then you can recruit, no matter the race. That being said, you named all the guys at the big time programs. Big time players are almost always going to go to big time programs anyways... yes? I don't think that's what were talking about here though. Tony is the only true Big-Time player we have on the roster as of now (not saying there arent some who could develop into that). Why did Chris and Jordan pick UNT? They wanted to play for Coach Jones. And now that he's gone I think that we should be looking for coaches with similar characteristics. If that happens to be Fran, then so be it... im down for whatever can keep this team together and get us in the tourney. As far race goes, it definitely played a role in why those guys came here. And in certain situations it will always play a role.

First off, as i stated before. My goal with this post was definitely not to offend anyone. But i completely disagree with you guys. I think race does have something to do with it particularly with the team we have now. If Fran knows the team and can get these guys to stay and play for him (if he were hired) than so be it. But these guys, particularly Jones, Williams, and Mitchell, came here because JJ was here. Johnny Jones is an extremely good role-model period. Him being a man of color is a plus. Why do think Jones, Williams, and Mitchell came here? Obviously, Tony's story is a little different, but CJ and JW had options too. They could have easily gone to SMU,TCU,UH,etc. and played in better conferences. I believe half the reason they came here is because the head coach at UNT was a strong-willed, upstanding, African-American male(the only African-American coach in the metroplex before Johnson went to TCU). I went to several practices in my time at UNT and I can tell you first hand, any player who has ever come to this program with an attitude that they were already the "stuff" and didn't need coaching (KD,Wooden,Harold Edwards, ect) JJ whipped them into shape real quick. Players respect and are attracted to that kind of coach and program. I agree that UNT may have trouble attracting African-American coaches with HC experience that fit those qualities, but that is definitely what they should be looking for.

Im just having a really hard time finding any true up-side to hiring Fran Fraschilla. I mean, wouldnt this just be a celebrity hire? He just has a famous name, right? I looked at his record.... what did he really do? what is he known for? Do you guys really think Tony, Chris, Jordan, and the rest of the team would like this dude? Trying to sound as non-offensive as possible, I truly believe an African-American coach would suit this team better. I think that was one of the best things JJ had going for him, especially when it came trying to recruit out of DISD. Johhny was good at taming knuckle-heads who had the talent to play at the top D-1 schools in Texas but for whatever reason couldnt handle it. (behavior, grades, lack of father-figure,etc.) Adminttedly, I am quite ignorant as to who this Fraschilla really is. I have read his bio but i need something else. That alone does not get me excited to hire this guy...

Do we actually have a chance to get this guy? I wonder if were even on his radar.
-
Why not?

So will coaches only consider us if they can be guaranteed that our current roster will stay intact? Despite all those facts, If everybody transfers out of here who's going to want to coach us?
-
How is our basketball program viewed by the rest of the Nation? Do we even have that type of program that can generate some buzz as to who will be our next head coach? I honestly feel that this could be a make-or-break decision as far the UNT Men's Basketball goes for at least the next 10 years. We've gained so much momentum over the last 5 years but how do we keep it from slowing down? This whole situation is really scary. Are we thought of as a school that coaches want to come to? I just dont understand what we're suppose to do. We had the best recruiting class in UNT history last year, and I don't doubt that there are coaches out there who can do what JJ did here. But are we attractive enough to even get them to turn their heads and give us consideration? - Concerned Fan

Okay.... Now that we know he's staying....

That would be an awesome lineup. My only question is, can Tony dribble well enough to play the 3? (assuming thats were you would like to see him). You need to be able to slash pretty well to play that three position. We know he can hit an open three but what do you think about him taking somebody off the dribble? -

so in a scenario where we have this awesome year; we make it to the sweet 16; Tony is turns into a lottery pick.... You think JJ stays anyway? I really hope thats the case. I think if he has another really good season, especially with Tony bringing added attention to the team, he's out of here. -
Now that we know Tony is going to stay for at least another season. What do you guys think our starting lineup will look like? What should our expectations be for next year's team? Is this a make or break season for us? Do Johnny and Tony both leave us next season no matter what?

Hey guys, havent been on the site in a while so I apologize up front if these questions were brought up a long time ago. Is tailgating going to be better this year? Is it still going to be in the Fouts parking lot? Are they going to have some type of shuttle service to get students across I35 who don't have vehicles?
-
so injuries the big reason we fell off in conference play? whos are starting five going into saturday's game?
-
Alright somebody catch me up. What happened to our team once we hit conference play? I know we have talent but our we just not a good team?? Or are we like the Lakers, able to turn it on and off? does anybody see us winning this tournament?
-
Im sitting watching the CUSA championship game and I still cant believe it. Was SMU really that good this year? How did they get by U of H? If we played them would we even have a chance? Has SMU widened the gap that much? Is there talent better than ours? Anybody have any perspective as what a recruit is thinking when he makes his mind up to go to SMU instead of UNT? (or is a recruit considering SMU way out of our league?) Somebody help me out please

I was not able to view the game so i was hoping you guys could fill me in. I can almost guess why we lost.... we more than likely tried to run a fast-break up-tempo style against a team that was faster than us and that could out rebound us. And then the game was probably close in the first half and then their bigs took over in the second. Am i close? Also, how are far away are we from becoming a team that could give a power-program like KU a serious problem? I believe we have enough talent now to give a good program a run for their money but it has to be the right match-up. IMO, that is the biggest difference between this current cast of NT players and the ones that went dancing in 2007. Those players were just taller. We had the same type of offense, the same types of good post players, the same types of quick slashing gaurds who could shoot the 3; they were just taller. That's why in 07 we gave Memphis so much more of a harder time than we did KSU last year.

okay... if not Mike Canales than who?.... I mean seriously... can we really afford to go after some semi-notable Head Coach who's looking to rebuild his career? Our FB program is not as lucrative as the other Texas schools so how do we expect to stay competitive? Having a semi-famous name in TD has greatly increased our recruiting success.... whats gonna happen next year if TD is not around? ITS OBVIOUS sOME PART OF THE WINNING EQUATION IS STILL MISSING FROM OUR PROGRAM... ITS NOT PLAYERS BECUZ WE GOT TALENT!!!!! with the exception of McGuffie there was no difference between our players and those of the Rice Owls SO THEN WHATS THE PROBLEM!?!?!?!?
-
when we hired TD we knew he would bring some flare to our offense and that naturally we would put up a lot of points... Canales, however, brings fluidity to our offense.... after TDs first two or three seasons i felt like our Offense started to become stagnant and predictable... MC has brought back the Mystique.... Even if its not Canales, the next HC of UNT will be hired from within... after this stadium is finally up... are we not going to be dirt poor?
