Buchholz is I believe a NT alum and very successful businessman. So I well give him some slack and hope that he is not as unaware as these quotes would lead you to believe. I would imagine that the BOR is taking their share of grieve about Jackson and may be overly defensive. Whether they back Jackson publicly are not, the continued expressed dissatisfaction with Jackson has got to be registering loudly.

The good thing is that there should be real competition for playing time. NT returns all four starters: Lewis, Jackson, Outlaw and Carey. Add to that Lott who has started in the past, Stradford who may be the best of the bunch, Dodge with I think excellent potential at receiver, and Bynes who the coaching staff wanted despite having a loaded squad at the wr position. There are also two more lettermen in Taylor and Johnson. With a lot more tight end and H back sets, there will not be as many minutes available at wr.,
It is very difficult to name a starting three, my guess would be Stradford, Jackson and Carey. The battle for the fourth spot in 4 receiver sets should be close between Lewis, Outlaw, Dodge and Bynes. This group has scary potential with a lot better speed than the NT norm. There may be better receivers in the Belt, but I doubt anyone can match NT' s depth. Jackson was an all conference receiver last year and he could have plenty of NT company this year. Dunbar should certainly keep defenses honest. The biggest question is can Tune or Thompson turn into the kind of QB that can elevate this receiver group.

It is ironic that NT strongest position is running back. Dunbar could and should be one of the best in the nation. Many may have forgotten that Mosely actually started in his freshman year and Mathis actually looked very good based on only a few carries and both are reported in be in the 225 lb range. . Hamilton looked excellent in the spring and has the speed and moves to start at a lot of schools. I would redshirt Byrd, I don't see him getting enough carries to warrant losing a year. However, I doubt there will be many redshirts; Dodge is going full out to win this year as he cannot afford to build for a future that he may not be part of.

I would hope at least 5,000 NT fans travel to San Marcos with the quality of our basketball team.
We are far from any position to be talking trash about support for our basketball program.
Hope to see you in San Marcos on Nov. 27. If you're not in San Marcos, you need to be at Fouts.
Really, actually I was talking trash about them talking trash about our football program. As a season ticket holder for over 20 years and having attended most of the home games for 40 years, I am well aware of NT's basketball support.

Milton was a very nice and respectable guy. This didn't help him on the field! It was obvious that he was from a small town. He pledged the same social organization that I was a member of (my last year) Milton's main problem were the guys ahead of him. All-Time Greats Bernard Jackson & Malcolm Jones (The Carter connection) Additionally, Bobby Daniels of Dallas Roosevelt. Both of these guys fell under the recruiting radar. Had they came out of HS a year or two later, they would have been Blue Chip recruits in Texas. Anyway, any other era, Milton would have been more productive at running back.
Mike Jones was one if not the leading rusher in the nation in 1976 or 1977. Anyway your post, reminds me of the NT at UT game where NT had Mike and Malcolm Jones and UT: Ham, Jam and Lam Jones. The announcers had a rough day. Lam Jones looked faster than any player I have ever seen on the football field

Rice is a very big game but not a must game. It would be nice to win and have some evidence that NT is not the worst team in Texas.

You guys calling him sorry are freakin' nuts. It's obvious job security was a major factor. Dodge will be gone after this year, so where does that leave him?? Seriously, Dodge was all but fired at last years end. What do you think the coaching staff went through during that very short and bizarre period?? Why take a chance and go through that again??? Don't blame the guy one bit. Besides, he's on the inside and an experienced coach that knows what this team is capable of. His glasses obviously aren't tinted as deep green as some of you here.
I guess he was not aware of any of this before he signed his last contract with NT.

I do blame Leftwich for leaving. I doubt his contract had clauses that stated if better opportunities evolve, please feel free to renege on your word. Also please, don't give me the obligatory expression of your concern for your players. Admittedly, most coaches would do the same thing as Leftwich, but that does not make it right. Coaches leave schools and ignore contract all the times, but leaving days before the season is especially disappointing. Kudos to Dodge, for handling this desertion with class.

For RB, I nominate Milton Collins out of Blooming Grove. He was supposed to be "Big Time". Mostly he was just big (and slow). He never made any kind of impact.
At QB, how about Gene Pool(although he did make a pretty good DB)?
I don't like the subject of this thread, there are lots of players who did not live up to expectations; but the label a player a bust that NT wanted and signed seems very inappropriate to me.
Milton is often cited as a big bust,only problem he wasn't : he ended up starting in the defensive line. He also provided more publicity to NT than any signee. Approximately 50% of all players who sign a division 1 ship have little impact on a program whether it is NT or UT. Do you label all of them busts? Even if you do, you could not include Collins because he gave a big boost to Fry's program for just signing and played a lot. He was the most heralded recruit in Texas that year, therefore the fact he did not turn out to be a super star was disappointing to NT fans. However, he did contribute a lot to NT.

I don't think much of Vito's Hall versus later QB comparisons. Vizza and Dodge were in a completely different environment. Not only were their teams a lot weaker, but they had to do so much more than in DD's offense. Nothing against Hall because he did a great job and will be in the NT HOF, but Vizza and Dodge might have been just as productive in a good run first offense.
Unfortunately Vito is right, NT is once again going into the season with QB questions. Quarterback has the least experience retuning of all positions except perhaps the newly reinstalled tight end position. Tune has some good experience having a couple of starts but IMO he was primarily in there to hold down the point spread and not to win. Thompson had one great series but nothing else. Back of them, there is a walk on and a very small freshman. However, Riley will probable get sport duty which at least will provide a change. The good thing is both Tune and Thompson are big and hopefully a lot more durable.
Both Tune and Thompson should be much better down field passers than an injured Dodge. Hopefully, that will open up the runner game and offset the lost of an QB option attack.

It seems that almost every fb division football or basketball player in Texas that wants or has to transfer is assumed good enough for ole NT. Any such player was good in High School but that does not mean he will be a success at the next level, no matter how many stars he received. Jones has done a great job in finding basketball players who can not only play but fit in. Unfortunately, the football program has not had that kind of success.
As far as criminal or character issues, each case has to be analysed. I think almost everyone is for giving people a second opportunity but no one wants to turn NT into a haven of malcontents or criminals. Personally I no not like the Troy model for success which is based on finding very good athletes with risks that most programs don't want to take.
D. J. Jones, may or may not be a good fit for NT. I would hope that NT at least evaluates his situation to determine if there is any mutual interest.

Wow. So facts and anything at approaches accuracy should give way to "volume" and "content." Of course that "content" is utterly devoid of reality but there is a lot of volume. That "content" also must exclude any sort of logic or fact-based reasoning as well.
If a so called writer lacks even the most basic desire to appear literate and doesn't even bother read what he scrawled onto a page, why is there any reason to assign any value to his drivel?
Name a functioning magazine or newspaper or legitimate news website with the a spelling, grammar or factual error at the Bleacher Reports usual rate one every third sentence.
I can't think of a single reason to read, much less believe, anything appearing in The Bleacher Report.
Well, don't read it, pretty simple.

I'm sorry...why on earth are we playing Texas St. twice this season??? I love the beginning of the schedule but cannot see how playing them twice will benefit us.
I think it is because of all the TSSM talk of football dominance. NT just wants to be associated with such a rising program. Based on football boosts, I would imagine at least 1,000 fans traveling to Denton and a capacity crowd in San Marcos.

I like the bleacher report. It does cover the Mean Green well. No, I don't agree with a lot of the opinions like the article supporting NT joining the WAC. Complaining about grammar, spelling and incorrect names is silly. Did you understand the article? This is the Internet and a lot of the coverage comes without the benefit of significant proof reading. By the way a lot of printed magazine and newspaper articles have the same issues. Like it or not; the emphasis is more on content and volume than correctness in the digital world.
Loose instead of lose bothers me, but not has much as people who oppose views by attacking typos, spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. in lieu of logically expressing a counter position.

Don't like the white helmets or the current green. However, if NT would just start winning; I could learn to appreciate both.

Dickey could coach but was a public relations nightmare and was IMO a poor recruiter. Dodge wasn't anywhere close to being ready to coach fb division football but is a better recruiter and at least spins positive. Dickey's early Belt success was based primarily on better talent and a football philosophy that was great when facing inferior teams. I know the better talent and poor recruiting are counter intuitive, but somehow DD got that 2001 class that dominated the Belt. The class of Hall, Buckles, Gardner, Kennedy, Spencer, Brewster, Zuniga, etc. may have been the best class in NT history. Based on the success that class spawned, DD though not ever coming close to matching that talent was able to add enough to keep NT successful till that group finished.
Point is, if NT had a coach with Dickey's knowledge and Dodge's work ethic and public relations skill, they would have a good coach. Dodge has one more chance for success and hopefully through a brutal learning process, he is ready.

One difference between you and me is that I always look on the positive things that happen, not the bad things.
Last year NT had 5 transfers and 2 are still listed on our current roster...LB Julian Herron from SMU (5* rating by Max Emfinger 2* by Rivals coming out out HS) and WR Tyler Stradford from University of Oklahoma (3*by Rivals coming out of HS) Both will get playing time this year...
Another thing NT is good at is late recruiting well after signing day has passed. Last year:
1. OG Keenan Flax, 2. SDE La Christopher Anyiam, Allen HS, 3. JC LB Sean January Scottsdale AZ CC and 4. DE KC OBI from Mission Hills CA...who played last year. Flax, Anyiam and January as well as OBI are all still on the roster. All 4 are quality signees.
This year NT already sined a late Tight end..Tanner Smith from FW Nolan HS.
Not sure what this is about, but it sure is not my post.

I am not sure you can rebuild after an awful season, so lets hope NT is in rebuilding mode next year. The truth is in a lots of ways, this year is a do or die season for the Green. Not only because of the Dodge situation but because this is an older experienced team and NT will lose a lot of players this year. Likely starters that will have to be replaced Santiago, Gill, Drake, J. Jackson, Ross, Tune, Atkisson, K. Jackson, Penson, Robertson and Smith. Add to that seasoned reserves in Outlaw, Lott, Mosley, Weber, Gordon, Neal, Owusa-Heming, Desoto and Johnson are seniors, and it is obvious that NT is going to have to once again hit the juco ranks next year. This is the problem with too much reliance on jucos, there are just not the the numbers of underclassmen available to restock the team.

Two of the assistant track coaches have left the program. The distance and cross country coach, Dr. Robert Vaughan, and the multi event coach (can't remember her name) have both gone their separate ways. It will be interesting to see who is brought in. Dr. Robert Vaughan was a well accredited coach known around the country for coaching skills. I will always wonder why he could not make things work for the mean green distance runners (Perhaps a lack of funds and support coming from above?). Rick Watkins remains as the head coach. It seems as the sprinters have their act together so maybe we can get a distance coach and multi event coach that can produce more than they have in the past. This could bring the track team to compete on a more national level if we can bring in a decent distance coach. I have heard rumor that the former Abilene Christian distance coach (coached ACU to a few national championships in XC and track) has applied. Supposedly he has African connections. I'm not sure if anyone cares about this but I will update as I hear news.
Appreciate the news, although I am not sure whether it is good or bad. I hope it is a case of upgrading the program not of having coaches leave because of poor funding.

I would add Jackie Miller, an all state player from Georgia; who batted .517 her senior year in high school. She also started for 4 years in hs with a career batting average of .445. Know nothing about Georgia softball, but those numbers are impressive.

Football coaches place a lot of faith, or at least interest, in polls (We're No. 1, and so forth), and head Coach T. W. Alley of the University of Louisville was therefore a bit miffed earlier this season when his star senior defensive back, Lonnie Schuler, was beaten out for Defensive Player of the Week in the Missouri Valley Conference by an unknown from North Texas State named Walter Chapman.
"Who's Chapman?" Alley asked.
"A freshman. Defensive tackle. Five feet, 10 inches. Weighs 244."
"A freshman?" Alley said with some irritation. "What did he do?"
"Well, he had 22 tackles and knocked down a pass."
There was a moment of silence. Then Alley said, "Where can I go vote for him
I will continue a little more rant. To me it is totally ridiculous that Chapman is not in the HOF. Saw a recent post on the official site talking about people left out of HOF and it mentions Camper and Lott. Both very good football players but neither were close to Chapman who was a starter and leader of the defense for four years. As for as comparison between defensive linemen for the Green. Yes, Joe Greene was obviously the best. After that it would be between Kennedy and Chapman. There are others that may have one on two great years: Cedic Hardman for example, but for a career no one matches Greene, Kennedy and Chapman. By the way, per article above has any other defensive lineman for NT ever come close to 22 tackles in a game, and that was for a freshman. Chapman like Kennedy played nose guard and was the focus of every opponents offense for four years. He regularly had double digit tackle games despite being double teamed. Kennedy was great and was a lot more flamboyant, but Chapman had a never stop motor.
Chapman suffers some because there are fewer and fewer fans left to remember him. He played in a time before the Internet and only played one year in a conference so he does not a bunch of readily available accolades. By the way he was all conference and freshman of the year in that one year.
Most of the HOF recipients are deserving but few more so than Chapman. I would hope that the committee, who ever they maybe, would take time out to do a little research and reward, although it would be way too late, one of the all time NT greats. Talk to Hayden or Chapman's teammates which include Jordan Case about his qualifications.
