  1. And I want to again give props to Coach Mendoza and his staff for hanging in during the tough times. To me it defines more of who you are and shows to the quality of your character not for how you handle situations leading up to adversity but how you handle it afterwards, or how you respond for the future and these men deserve a huge thank you from all of us for continueing to improve this defense. Coach's Mendoza, Lacroix, Peterson, Rausch, Drake and Vestal have my complete confidence and support for next year. It's exciting and we have a lot to look forward to.

Very well said. I whole-heartedly second that.

  2. Osborne names himself interim Huskers coach for recruiting

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Tom Osborne is back as Nebraska's football coach -- but just temporarily.

Osborne, already the interim athletic director, on Wednesday declared himself interim head coach until he hires a successor to Bill Callahan.

The interim coach designation lets Osborne visit prospective recruits away from campus, athletic department communications chief Randy York said Thursday.

The 70-year-old Osborne passed the NCAA certification test on his first try Wednesday, York said. Osborne went on the road to recruit Thursday and Friday, and the school sent a letter notifying the Big 12 of Osborne's new title, York said.

Once a hire is made, Osborne could continue to recruit until the new coach assembles a full staff of nine assistants, York said.

As the Cornhuskers' head coach from 1973 to 1997, Osborne won 255 games and three national championships.

Osborne said in a radio interview with the Husker Sports Network on Wednesday that he hoped to have a new coach selected by next week. He already interviewed Buffalo coach Turner Gill and LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and spoke informally with Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, according to media reports.

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly told local radio station WCKY on Wednesday that he had not been contacted by Nebraska.

Two assistants from Callahan's staff, defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove and cornerbacks coach Phil Elmassian, are no longer recruiting for Nebraska, York said.

The Mean Green (2-9, 1-5 Sun Belt) have taken baby steps in coach Todd Dodge's first season.

North Texas has made steady improvements despite not posting many victories, and it has plenty to play for in the season finale at Florida International on Dec. 1.

First, FIU has the nation's longest losing streak at 23 games, and the Mean Green it certainly don't want to be the opponent to see the streak end.

Second, UNT has several seniors who were part of the team's last championship, and they want to go out with a victory.

Finally, UNT is trying to win its first Sun Belt Conference road game under Dodge.

The Mean Green would appear to be the favorite on paper, but they must do a better job taking care of the football. FIU has made a lot of improvements over the past month and will hardly be a pushover.

  4. Man...it is no wonder we struggle so mightily to compete. Briles is/was making $900,000 per year to coach at Houston??? :shocking:

    How much does TD make???

Seems like there are a LOT more "mid-major" teams that pay their coaches a LOT more than we do.

Heck, Charlie Weatherbie practically works for free compared to that salary...

I think our football budget is going to have to increase significantly to remain competitive. If Coach Dodge is able to turn this ship around here, I hope we are going to be able to offer him (and his staff) a substantial (i.e., triple -> quadruple) raise.

  5. On top of all the performances that led to the victory-Thomas, NT's defense and NT's special teams-it was the lack of action that truly earned NT the win as the Mean Green refused to give in to their natural emotions and mimic the Hilltoppers' deplorable behavior.

Ummm, that's not exactly a true statement.

  6. Ole Miss hires former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt

08:41 AM CST on Tuesday, November 27, 2007

    Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. – Houston Nutt wasn't out of a job for long: He was hired as Mississippi's football coach just hours after resigning at Arkansas.

Nutt agreed to a contract late Monday night, and replaces Ed Orgeron, who was fired Sunday after the Rebels lost to rival Mississippi State and finished 3-9.

The hiring of Nutt was confirmed by a person close to the program who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made.

Nutt resigned even though the Razorbacks upset then-No. 1 LSU 50-48 in triple overtime last week.

The school planned an announcement on its coaching situation later Tuesday.

  7. Nutt's team beats LSU, and goes to the SEC title game. Not saying he has done a great job at Arkansas, but not even "What have you done for me lately?" saves his job.

Note that in the article, his "What have you done for me lately?" actually got him offered a 2-year extension. I think he just plain wants out.
