  1. It turns out that the reason our game is at 2pm is because Rice is hosting a women's BB tournament Fri & Sat nights:

    RiceOwls.com

I called their ticket office the other day, just getting to post about it now... You can buy tickets online, call 713-522-OWLS, or obviously buy them at the door. Sections 111/211 are behind the visitor's bench (click the "buy" link above), so 211 will be the place to be. Parking in West lot 4 is free. Just enter "Rice University" in Google maps, you'll see where the lot is and where "Tudor Fieldhouse" (formerly Autry Court) is.

It would have been great to have a tailgate or other alumni get-together planned, but we could still meet before the game somewhere in Rice Village. Apparently the list of restaurants in that link is out of date, but I believe most of the places are still there. I'm going to suggest Texadelphia, since I know some of y'all are bringing your kids. Who's in?

I also saw on my DISH guide that the A&M game is on Fox Sports SW, so those of us in Houston who can't take off from work on Monday afternoon to drive to College Station can still see the game, not to mention everyone in D/FW.

  2. Well, if drinking beer before (and during) the movie is part of the criterion, then I nominate.......ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES!

    http://www.badmovies.org/movies/killtomato/

"Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" doesn't qualify because it was intentionally made to be bad/funny. I also don't nominate "Manos", because it is so bad, it's painful, not funny.

I nominate From Hell It Came. "A wrongfully accused South Seas prince is executed, and returns as a walking tree stump." For years, the NY Times TV schedule's review was simply: "...and back it should go".

  3. I had been looking forward to making the trip to Lafayette since the schedule was announced, but unfortunately it's just not in the cards. The clincher is the weather - the storm system isn't going to clear out of Louisiana until at least the evening. So I guess I'm in - better than PPV at home. I'm just wondering - why a sandwich shop? Do they have a good size screen? Have they promised to show our game? The UT - Colorado game is at the same time...

I'm also concerned that we're going to be screwed by the GamePlan blackout rules. I have DISH, and they seem to indicate that it will be available in Houston (ch 461). But the Gameplan blackout map says otherwise: blackout map

  4. A Bowl game created purely for TV. Otherwise, why Yankee Stadium? I could see a bowl game in the new Giants/Jets stadium when it's finished next year. But this is a stadium designed purely for baseball. And the seating/sight lines will be worse than Oakland Coliseum, worse than all of the 1970's circular all-sports stadiums (Philadelphia/Pittsburgh/Cincinnati/St. Louis), worse than - dare I say it? - Fouts Field.

They might as well play the game in Javits Center - it would be kind-of like the Kibbie Dome.

... I see Stebo beat me to it...

  5. I'm just concerned about THIS Motel 6.

I'm thinking it's half-full of Katrina "refugees". <_< Yes, 4 years later. My wife & I stayed at a LaQuinta in Jackson, MS on our way home from our vacation this summer which was half-full of them. We chose the motel because it was the first one we would reach from the north, and didn't even think why it was $20/night less than all of the other LaQuintas in Jackson. When we got there, we found a full-time security guard patrolling the property, an interactive Audio/Video surveillance system for the lobby, and regular drive-throughs by the Jackson police. How did we know the "residents" were "refugees"? It wasn't hard to figure out, New Orleans is less than 100 miles away. But the clincher was the box of expired food and unused diapers in a box marked "FDA" sitting next to a trash can.

It actually wasn't threatening, but the place was pretty run down, like LaQuinta would have otherwise closed it if it wasn't for the government money.

Anyone ever have the guts to stay at "The Pines" motel in Lewisville??? I can't believe it's still standing. It looked bad when I first arrived in Texas 30 years ago. Even Wikipedia's Lewisville entry says You can even buy yourself a hooker at the Pines Motel on the corner of Business 121 and I-35E. :o

  6. 4 reasons I didn't try to set up a game-watching party in Houston for the Alabama game:

    - until a week ago, I didn't think it would be shown on TV, even on PPV.

    - Kickoff is at 11:20am, I didn't think anyone would show. This thread pretty well confirms that.

    - The Fox & Hound on Westheimer is the official Alabama alumni watch party location; I don't think I'd want to be there. Yes, we could go to SRO or somewhere else, but...

    - Saturday is the Jewish New Year, and myself and several others will be waiting until sundown and then watching the game from my DVR.

Don't forget that the game will be on Ch. 55, "The Tube".

Is there another away game that will be televised? If so, we'll definitely have watch party. If not, there will be 2 BB games in Houston plus one at A&M we can get together for soon enough!

  7. This is what amazes me:

Tune will lead UNT against an Alabama team that is ranked fourth in the country and drew 92,012 for its home opener...

    Celina, Texas

Celina (pronounced suh-LYE-nuh) is a city[3] in Collin and Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,861 at the 2000 census.

He'll be playing in front of a crowd almost 50 times larger than his hometown! :o Glad to hear that:

"He’s cold blooded. Nothing really affects him.”

  8. And Emmitt and company thought the same thing as they attempted to get it started from the alumni side. Just another REASON why I have advocated for years for a pre-signalled, unified chant that is quick, easy and over with within seconds. I've seen it at Houston, Memphis, A&M, tU, OU, LSU, K State and on and on and on. Why we can't do one I have no idea?

    Rick

I'll let you answer your own question, Rick:

    foutsseatdistance.jpg

... 33 1/2 yards away from the nearest point of the playing surface...

double that... 67 yards in addition to the width of the field!

The new stadium will make a huge difference - for cheering, and for the Green Brigade. For those who were on the alumni side - wasn't it great to have the Green Brigade playing in front of you, not 33 1/2 yards away? OK, so they didn't march in the rain...
