  1. Call me a hard-ass, but I would have preferred that UNT and TN just part ways. Maybe there are extenuating circumstances to his "offenses", I don't know...with all the good students/athletes out there who need a hand, why does this kid get to be UNT's latest charity case?

Before anyone sez this is off-limits subject matter, remember his actions are a matter of public record.

If he graduated, I'd consider altering my opinion.

  2. No...I'm gonna continue to have fun at Michael Sturns expense. JJ would be supportive of my efforts to get to the NBA as well. I've known Sturns since H.S....and based on that I think I'll stick with the players analysys who felt he should just go ahead and forget about the NBA and maybe take a practical look at his life. He'll be able to find a place in Europe (which given the opportunity, I would take over the NBA in a heartbeat) and maybe even be successful there...but he doesnt have the shot, handle, athleticism or most importantly the head to be an NBA player. If his former H.S. teammate Keith Langford, who was a star for 4 years at Kansas, has managed only a couple of 10 day contracts and has a work ethic that would make Sturns look like Oliver Miller...I'm sorry but Sturns wouldn't make it through an NBA training camp.

He's 6'4"-6'5" and he has difficulty dunking...find me another NBA player with a similar build with similar "athleticism"

Sounds like the sentiments of a failed athlete. Sour grapes?

I think you can objectively say Sturns lacks an NBA game at the moment, and he might agree. But what's the point of spitting all over the kid's dream? It's his, not yours. Quit being a tool, unless once upon a time the guy seriously wronged you.

  3. Yes, I tried to bring that to people's attention in my "A Cheery Bunch" thread, but maybe I wasn't direct enough. And, maybe I felt stunned at the amount of respect that forum members I have respected were giving Nautique.

Cool. Us Tarrant-ers need to stick together, Euless.

  4. Most (nearly all) college athletes sign waivers to the HIPPA protection, thereby allowing coaches, staff, medical folks, media-relations folks, etc. to release their health/injury status, especially if the cause was football related. Athletes can choose not to sign, but it's rare. Some coaches choose to keep it confidential to keep reporters in check or opposing coaches in the dark. Franchione only released season-ending injuries at A$M.

My guess is most schools (if not the coaches) want to be open about injuries, because state-funded health insurance is paying for a lot of those ACLs, ankles, shoulders, etc.

  5. They were closed last season. Now if you like looking through a chain link fence it can be done though. Brett Vito will be standing right next to you too. <_<

I think spring practice was open last year, except for a scrimmage or two, but I don't remember. It's fall camp that's definitely closed. This ran Feb. 5 on starteleegram blog:

    UNT spring practice dates

North Texas is scheduled to start spring football practice on March 6, the first of 15 workouts including scrimmages and the April 12 Spring Game at 2 p.m. at Fouts Field. The schedule is as follows, with most times pending:

    Week 1: March 6, 7

    Week 2: March 10, 11, 13

Week 3: Spring Break, no workouts

    Week 4: March 25, 27, 28 (scrimmage)

    Week 5: March 31; April 1, 2, 4 (scrimmage)

    Week 6: April 8, 10, 12 (Spring Game)

For now, it appears the March 28 and April 4 scrimmages will be closed to the public, but no official word yet.

  6. bottom line, I guess, is I want to know what the hell Vito meant by this:

"There is a pretty interesting story behind how Drake wound up having surgery this far after the season for an injury that occurred on Oct. 27. For the complete story, see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle."

What's the interesting story?? A "misdiagnosis" as poster(s) led us to believe? Seems to me the DRC set out to uncover Watergate with regard to a starting center's sprained ankle and ended up with jack squat.

  7. Again, ankle sprain and torn ankle ligaments/tendons are the same thing. When the MRI was given isn't a factor. They knew he had a sprained ankle, and the first treatment is rest (MRI or no MRI). I'm not sure where it says this was his first MRI (if I'm wrong there, sue me). If it was the first MRI, it was to determine if further rest would or wouldn't work, not to unearth some new, mystery diagnosis. In this case, rest wasn't sufficient, so the next course of action is surgery. An MRI in October would have revealed the same thing.

What I'm theorizing here is that doctors estimated he'd have as good a chance to make spring ball with rest/immobilization as he would have with surgery. It's guesswork, but you don't jump into surgery first. That's last resort for anyone, regardless of when/if MRI was given. Dodge/UNT isn't just going to cut on someone for the sake of making sure they get to spring practice -- counter to apparent expectations around here.

I don't mean to give his mom a hard time, but I just don't know what to make of her comments.

  8. Is his mother alleging some screw-up? A sprained ankle (at least grade 2 and above) IS torned ligaments/tendons. Everything you read about ankle sprains/strains sez rest is the first prescribed treatment, not surgery as this (Vito?) seems to be implying. It's my understanding that Wooden has the same thing right now, with the options being:

    1) Rest, don't play

    2) Play, since you can't do any more damage

    3) Surgery, don't play

If Drake tried to heal with rest (as Dodge said) and it didn't work, what's the "misdiagnosis" I've seen broached by some folks? Seriously, what am I missing?

  9. Why is Phillips getting all the so called "confidential" info? If Vito is the beat reporter, why is he getting beat (no pun intended) to the stories of all these guys leaving, Drake needing surgery, the hiring of the new assistants, etc.?

More information comes from this blog and another blog before it hits Vito's computer?

I guess, its possible, that Vito is spread too thin.

I think Vito had Drake/Thomas first. Looks like a cat-and-mouse thing with the two papers...you get some, I get some, punch, counterpunch. Still doesn't explain why Vito is having to troll around for "sources" on stuff, and Phillips can go straight to the big man himself. Nice to have them fighting over us. They both have their pluses and minuses.

  10. Good to know Drake is fixing the ankle problem now and not waiting it out, which is what it sounds like he tried. Wonder what the big "story" with his surgery is, as Vito promised earlier. I have seen a "misdiagnosis" alleged on here. Hope someone's not sorry for that later (actually, I kinda hope they are).

Looks like Johnson may be on a fast track at center in case Drake is slow to heal. No Chad Rose, OL might be thin in spring. I predict Joseph Miller will kick some ass.
