  1. He's definitely been a bright spot on the Dline.

I'm curious as to why Miller & Weathers were "dismissed" from practice for disagreements with Mendoza?????

From what I've heard, Mendoza was having one of those days where you're just hot under the collar for everyone. Don't think it was really anything. Some days when your kids want to argue, you just aren't having any of it.

  2. Point made after some nice diggin' there. That team did score an obscene amount of points for several years and still does. They found the one thing they could do well and did it better than anyone in the state. On defense, it appears they were good, but never great. Just looked that way when they scored 45 every week, especially in regular season. Is this the kind of offense/defense dynamic we can expect in the future, if the spread does what it's supposed to with the right athletes? More wondering aloud than asking.

Not that I'd ever go back to where we were.

  3. Yeah, i'm thinking their forte was scoring defense, but more bend-don't-break in the yardage department. Still, I think Drake and Mendoza are the only ones who left. Isn't the DC someone who was there before?

Hate to see anyone in high school holding Dunbar to 30 yards (twice). Thought he was better than that. I'm guessing he is.

Damn, Carroll's offense looks as powerful as ever, at least against the competition in this area and probably most of Texas.

  4. I was being sarcastic. Meyer runs his version of the "Spread" at Florida and he has been giving SEC teams fits since he got there. To make a statment that "defenses have figured out the spread" is a little misleading after watching Florida destroy OSU last year. OU hasn't figured out how to stop it, or at least they hadn't before their bowl game against Boise State. Yes I agree you have to be able to run the ball, but to make a blanket statement that defenses have figured it out and that teams that run the "Spread" are not fooling anyone anymore, I think is a bad statement.

Yeah, your sarcasm was so clear and didn't come off as a wise-arse jerky remark, because context on message boards is always so obvious and never condescending. :P

Oh sorry, I was just being sarcastic.

  5. In case anyone cares, here's Lance Dunbar's season so far:

    164 vs. Mansfield

    190 vs. Newman Smith

    31 vs. Everman

    33 vs. Grapevine

Everman, a 4A school, allows less than 100 yards rushing a game. Grapevine's defensive stats aren't reported.

Rodge leads the Startlegram's area in passing yards (1,275) and TDs (16). Carroll is No. 1 in total offense at 517.8.

I don't know if this means anything but it still makes me uneasy:

Out of 25 schools listed, Carroll is 22nd in total defense at 354.5. Three schools were zeroed out, but I went over to DMN and did the math. They'd all still be higher.

I know Carroll gave up a lot of yards to Northwestern, but Rockwall and Keller Central went up and down the field, too. I know it's high school, but was Carroll always bad on defense and just able to cover it up?

  6. He should have been punished/suspended/something to send a message this isn't tolerated. He's never missed a road trip, nothing. Big brother has been in trouble going back to '03, and Tobe's just sorta falling in behind. Everyone keeps saying how nice he is, but I'm sure Wal-mart or local law enforcement can care less. He stole merchandise that wasn't his, and he did it while on probation for a previous offense. All he had to do was keep his hands to himself, and he wouldn't be going to court next Thursday. I don't know if the actual theft and his arrest were several weeks apart (I doubt it), but they threw him in the clink AFTER Todge had become coach. Darrell was long gone, and nothing's happened to this kid.

Love it how we all bitch and moan about other teams' jurisprudence problems, until it happens to our team.

  7. North Texas averages a little over 18 yards per return. Consider Oklahoma, with all of it's speed is the 5th best kickoff return team nationally, is averaging 28?

Our defense is giving up 580 yards of offense per game to our opponents and our return game tops our list of concerns?

    Rick

If I had to guess, I'm pretty sure the story wasn't meant to minimize the defensive concerns. That was addressed in the Startlegram's game story on Sunday.

The thing is, starting field position is going to get fixed sooner than a crappy defense that gives up assloads of yards by any opponent. Watch the damn kick return team and notice the hole we're in starting just about every drive. How does that help the offense? How does it help the defense if the offense can't get going, and we have to punt from near our own end zone, which we've done WAY TOO MUCH this season. Starting field position is crucial, so don't act like it's just some candy-ass thing to be ignored. Also, given the high number of kicks returns (third in the nation??!!!) is an accurate indicator of our terrible scoring defense, we need any good field position we can get on every drive. Bottom line is Bush, Roman and their blockers aren't doing their jobs.

  8. Appears there's a group of players with significant previous experience who have been moved off to the side (not that this applies to Banks). Fact of life with any new staff. Looks like they include Rose, Warren, Chatman, Durodoye and Ross (still on team?). Until Saturday, Green was one of them. If I'm wrong, some may be on special teams, which could account for occasional shortfalls there. Bummer it has to happen to anyone, but it does.

  9. UNT FOOTBALL NOTES

    Dodge finds old sages plentiful

    By TROY PHILLIPS

    Star-Telegram Staff Writer

DENTON -- If North Texas' Todd Dodge wants to improve as a new college head coach, he'll have several experienced subjects with which to match wits this season.

His first lesson against Oklahoma's Bob Stoops three weeks ago was harsh. On Saturday, Florida Atlantic's Howard Schnellenberger -- who has had mixed success at Louisville, Oklahoma and Miami (Fla.) -- will be across the sideline from Dodge in UNT's conference opener.

Schnellenberger's long career -- which spans more than 40 years -- has seen better days, but his 2-1 team is coming off an upset of Minnesota. The old coach, who is 3-0 at FAU against UNT, should have a few tricks.

Other experienced coaches that UNT will face are Arkansas' Houston Nutt, Troy's Larry Blakeney, Louisiana-Monroe's Charlie Weatherbie and Navy's Paul Johnson.

"I'm always trying to get better," said Dodge, who said he'll try to find any edge he can against his coaching counterparts. "I told our players that I'm not near as good today as I'll be on Saturday. Any of those guys coming up are fabulous coaches, and I'm learning all the time."

Dodge said that as a coach he can't expect his team to improve if he doesn't show improvement or gain more knowledge as a head coach.

At the same time, "if someone has so much more experience than I do, it doesn't mean we can't go out and win a game," Dodge said.

    Bad news, good news

Seeing safety Kartey Agbottah lead UNT in tackles (eight) against SMU wasn't exactly ideal, but the sophomore from Irving MacArthur High School did show the "upside" that UNT coaches have raved about.

Agbottah stepped in this season after starter Roy Loren was dismissed from the team. He forced a fumble against SMU and, to Dodge's twisted delight, even committed a personal foul.

"He's a kid that [playing well] means a whole lot to," Dodge said. "Sometimes kids like that are a little tentative. They want to do the right thing all the time."

Dodge said coaches want the 6-foot-2, athletic Agbottah to "turn loose and play with more emotion."

Dodge said UNT doesn't condone such penalties, but it was nice to see the more assertive side of Agbottah.

    Briefly

--Running back Jamario Thomas and offensive tackle Robert Peachey have both practiced during the off week after extended layoffs with hamstring problems.

--Todd Dodge said missed tackles are the biggest adjustment UNT's defense has addressed in the off week. Coaches calculated that 12 missed tackles against SMU resulted in the Mustangs gaining 189 of their 353 total yards.

--Despite facing nearby SMU last year, UNT officials believe Saturday's home-opening crowd against FAU could approach or surpass last year's 25,231 against the Mustangs, though no estimate was given.

  10. Hey listen, Most of those rankings are a bunch of CRAP! Seriously, we've played one game and that was against No.5 Oklahoma.

Uh, I think I get that, Mr. Overreaction. It's just something that was out there and does indicate a pretty poor start on the defensive side of the ball. I know it's not a barometer for the whole season, but it ain't great either.

Your leg must be killing you from that knee jerk.

  11. Silence on some subjects is quite golden. (Anonymous)

What we all hope Todd Dodge will say in the near future: "I really can understand why we went to 4 bowl games in a row since (after all) we were ranked in the Top 25; you know, just like our former Big West Conference collegue Boise State has been the last several years?

PS: Wouldn't it have been nice back when both UNT and BSU left the Big West if we had followed the same roadmap as the Broncos?

Yeah, top 25 of worst offenses for the better part of a decade. Was it Dickey, or the "great minds" he surrounded himself with? I honestly don't know.

  12. Dickey will have to wear a Trojan raincoat to protect himself from the onslaught of the boys from Troy. After getting banged up by the Trojans, the Hogs will be Nutt-less.

Yes, but how potent would Dick be without Nutt? Defensively, I can see Trojan needing an extra layer of protection from a potent Nutt/Dick combination. McFadden just throws another hair in the pie.

  13. Troy has a shot if they can stop the RBs of Arkansas as their best WR is injured still and they have some injuries. Also will Nutt realses the Dicks to do as they please against the Trojans  .

    Good luck to you guys!!

I doubt the Trojans have any defense against Dick's offensive onrush. With Nutt's help, Dick will puncture every defense the Trojans (un)roll out there.

  14. Very Dickey-like moaning and groaning, but I'm not surprised. Before coming to MUTS, this guy coached in the high-rent district (FSU, others I think) and now he's having one of those Murphy's Law preseasons that pretty much kills your ability to stay upbeat. Must admit, 60 scholies is D-IAA and D-II type numbers. How did the school/program let it come to that? Injuries/quitters didn't suddenly dump the roster that low.

Makes me think we're pretty lucky with our fan base, albeit not the largest around, in a major population center. After going to Arky State last year, I was pretty appalled that Jonesboro could support (does it?) a D-I football program. That entire Northeast Arkansas area on the drive up from Little Rock was Godforsaken. Seriously, I think I drove through a town called Weiner. Is the MUTS problem symptomatic of trying to stage D-I football in a place like Murfreesboro? I mean, look at the hellish burgs where several Belt schools are located. Troy? Monroe? Lafayette (food's good)? Bowling Green? Jonesboro? These places freakin' redefine "small market."

It makes me wonder why we don't clean up in more sports than we do. Just a way better area from which to operate/draw.
