  1. Baton Rouge Advocate reporting now that head of the Parker Search Firm is adamant that neither Ford nor anyone else has been hired, and that the firm remains "in touch with a number of candidates from around the country." This is going to get done (or to that end) at the Final Four. Wonder if RV has a contingency list already.

  2. She runs numerous free basketball clinics every year for young people (boys and girls) to come and learn skills. My neice went to several of them a few years back. She is very much in the community and the young people involved in basketball, over the past 10+ years, will definitely know who she is. There is no doubt, she has been very active in the area with her camps.

Good to know she's visible and well-known by today's players, but still...is she more of a camp coach than a college coach? I guess hoops is hoops.

  3. Sounds like RV has some quality candidates. :)

Probably a few other good ones not in this story, too. So, do today's generation of girls/women's players know Nancy Lieberman that well? She was a hell of a player, but outside that one year playing in the WNBA, I'm not sure any of them were even born in her heyday. She doesn't have any college coaching experience, either. That bothers me a little. Isn't she more of a "personality" than a coach? Does fame trump real experience?

BTW, looks like the FW Startelegram was all over it today.

  4. Saw this a while back in the paper here...looks like Johnny really wants this kid back, according to Weatherford's coach. Too bad.

    Small Colleges Notes

    By TROY PHILLIPS

    tphillips@star-telegram.com

The Fort Worth area isn’t Kansas or west Texas when it comes to junior-college basketball, so a program like Weatherford College crawls under the radar.

Otherwise, crawling isn’t Weatherford’s style. With the immediate area is thin on two-year college hoops offerings, WC has kept a high standard that still continues.

WC’s women (15-4, 7-1) sit second in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference behind McLennan (8-0). They won the program’s ninth conference title (15-1) last year and advanced to the regional semifinals, as well as giving coach Bob McKinley his 700th career victory at the school.

The Coyote men are 19-4 and just fell to 7-1 in conference after a 16-game winning streak. It’s a bounce-back year for the Coyotes, an atypical sub-.500 the past two seasons and a no-show at the regional tournament.

From 1998-2002, WC’s men won four conference titles and have five overall. The 1999 team went 34-3 and finished third in the nation.

“Injuries and discipline problems,” said Osina, describing what befell his top scorers the last two seasons. “We turned average. I thought we’d have another good team, then last summer, up pops Roderick Flemings. On Aug. 8, we became a better team, and me a better coach.”

Flemings, a forward from DeSoto, played at Oklahoma State before transferring to North Texas in 2006. He didn’t qualify academically to play for UNT this season.

Osina got another big scorer to go with Edvinas Ruzgas, a 6-6 Lithuanian who played high school ball in Virginia. Flemings (20.6 points per game) and Ruzgas (20.2) rank 1-2 in the league in scoring.

Flemings had 29 points and 16 rebounds in Wednesday’s loss at Temple. Ruzgas scored 44 on Saturday against Grayson County.

Weaning himself off a 3-point shot dependency, Ruzgas has rounded into a Division I prospect but is yet to commit to a college (Penn State inquired this week). Flemings could be headed back to UNT, Osina said, but he needs to “hit the books” and get his associate’s degree.

“[uNT] is very interested in trying to get him back,” Osina said, adding that UNT steered Flemings to Weatherford. “He’s got academic issues to take care of.”

Until both players know what’s next, Osina will enjoy being a better coach.

    Briefly

    ■ Weatherford College’s baseball team is 4-0 after freshman Paul Montalbano threw a no-hitter Tuesday to beat Northeast Texas Community College 11-0. Last week, Steven Sultzbaugh became the first WC player to hit for the cycle.

    ■ Area athletes are piling up women’s basketball player-of-the-week awards in the Lone Star Conference south division. Abilene Christian forward Kristee Davidson (Fort Worth Christian) won this week after averaging 21.5 points in two games. West Texas A&M guard Courtney Lee (Kennedale) won the previous two weeks.

  5. A little too much obsession here with a few players who aren't practicing. It's spring ball. Every year, a handful have injuries, grades or personal stuff, etc. and don't practice. Best guess is all three will be there in August pending whatever's going on now. Jeesh, two aren't even starters...three if you count Dibrell going in for Washington late last season. Give it a rest.

  6. I would have to say that is a fairly good report by Phillips - wonder if he is the only media being allowed onto the practice field? I can't think that players working out on their own is good for their future playing time.

They're allowing media on the field for practice? Since when?

  7. Some people just don't get it. I mean, in the article he plainly states he doesn't give Rivals recruiting the end-all, be-all?

In '06 after beating Pittsburgh in the Fiest Bowl Utah's class ranked 55th, Texas ranked 5th. Pittsburgh's class ranked 21st.

In '07 after beating Oklahoma in the Fiest Bowl Boise's recruiting class ranked 68th, Texas ranked 5th. Zero U's class ranked 14th.

And in '08 after making it to the Sugar Bowl Hawaii's class ranked 71st, Texas ranked 14th.

And he expects TCU to be right up there in the top 10? Does he have a clue how much money the mega programs spend on recruiting and how hard Rivals sucks up to them?

    Rick

"Sucks up" isn't quite the term I'd used, but close. More like "sucks o@#".

  8. i really like all four of these. I've heard Tidwell can scour the kansas jucos like nobodys bidness...as well as every texas juco or high school. Harvey has a ton of experience, but i think she hasn't found the right job since her WNBA gig went away. she apparently won a lot at texas A&M before that program took a nosedive in the pre-Gary Blair years. i think she was with Blair years ago at another school.

Tell you what, Capps must have some nards to walk away from a D-I job like that and not take any crap from the AD. Maybe it sounds like trouble, but she really connected with players at UTA and made them better, apparently. Don't know much about Gerlich, but WTAM is pretty good, and anyone who played with Swoopes the year Tech won it all must know something. Hell, can't argue with Marsha Sharp as a mentor.

  9. QUOTE(moffat @ Mar 11 2008, 09:06 PM)

I agree... TN was kicked off the field today by Coach Todd Dodge only two plays after being warned by Dodge. I wish TD was a hard-ass and would stick to the "family...character... bulls#*t" he preaches. If so, he would have never let TN back on the team, and then he would have not allowed Coach DeLoach to put him back on the field, 5 plays later.

I agree with you, H-towngreen. Let Dodge and Deloach use their judgment, otherwise hope and pray for the best. Coach Steve Lineweaver here in Euless is the only coach I know personally, and I respect him more than any man I have met who is in the public eye. The fact that he consistently supports Dodge indicates to me that Dodge deserves such support. Dodge stated, when asked about discipline issues last year (before the TN probation revocation), that he would deal with such things on a case by case basis. I feel he is keeping his word, and respect that he's trying to bring this troubled young man "back into the family". Will it work? Nobody knows, but at this point, I think it's worth a try.

you are probably right, euless. I have misgivings about it with what's been reported, but if he holds up his end, then give him a third strike. after that, no more please.

  10. The Sunbelt really ought to reseed the teams that win the play-in games. Because of the Troy upset, #4 MUTS gets the #12 seed Troy, while #1 USA plays the #8. It doesn't make sense.

Reseed because a lower seed won? Why? If Troy loses, then muts gets the 5 seed and your idea to reseed is moot. Why should USA reap benefit just because a lower seed won? Those aren't really play in games. They're just straight up first-round games opposite each other, so no need to reseed.

  11. Nice job KBJ. You just picked a fight with people for no reason. From reading this, Dodge never said anything other than pointing out Robertson as a high-impact guy from last year, which is completely accurate. Nowhere does it say Colt Mahan is out of the mix as a starter or backup. It's not a depth-chart recitation, just an illustration of UNT's depth/inexperience at all the LB spots. You always read into stuff this badly?

As for the coaching being a "joke", look in the mirror, sir.
