  1. I cant believe the amount of people who rag on JJ and our b-ball program. I had to get out the media guide and show what a horrible b-ball program this has been. Here is the b-ball program the 30 years before we hired JJ. And even our 20 wins seasons in the 70's were full of games against what are now D-2, D-3, and NAIA schools. For those people that rag on our 1 or 2 wins a year against non D-1 schools, well in our hey day our schedule was full of non D-1 schools. So here are the records the 30 years before JJ.

    71-72, 8-18

    72-73, 9-16

    73-74, 13-13

    74-75, 6-20

    75-76, 22-4

    76-77, 21-6

    77-78, 22-6

    78-79, 11-16

    79-80, 13-14

    80-81, 15-12

    81-82, 15-12

    82-83, 15-15

    83-84, 9-19

    84-85, 5-23

    85-86, 10-18

    86-87, 11-17

    87-88, 17-13

    88-89, 14-15

    89-90, 5-25

    90-91, 17-13

    91-92, 15-14

    92-93, 5-21

    93-94, 14-15

    94-95, 14-13

    95-96, 15-13

    96-97, 10-16

    97-98, 5-21

    98-99, 4-22

    99-00, 7-20

    00-01, 4-24

So in the 30 years before JJ we had 3 seasons of 18 wins or more. In the last 4 years we have won 23, 20, 20, and this year at least 18. I still cant believe that people can get on here and complain about JJ and the program.

There can be no question that JJ is the best coach we have ever had.

The question is what do we want, and what can we reasonably hope for? The subject of a post by Tasty a while ago.

We are about 137 in the RPI, depending on which one your read. Sagarin has us at 163, Pomeroy at 179. If we win the conf tournament we will be a 15 or 16 seed. Until this season, we have done better than 10-6 in the conf, and that only once at 11-7. Coming into this season, JJ was below .500 in conf games in his career though in fairness he inherited a train wreck; he was 43-37 in the most recent five years and of course is improving on that.

So the question that Mo is raising is, is that what we want from this program?

Believe me things will be getting tougher if the conference can keep such coaches as Jarvis, Brady, Arrow, Davis, McDonald, etc. These guys have scalps on their wall and are excellent at both recruiting and game coaching.

This season is probably JJs best coaching job, considering the injuries which robbed us of our point guard and inside depth, and the trend of conference results is positive. He is making progress.

So to me stating that JJ is the best coach we have ever had begs the issue; the issue is are we getting out of our program what we want and are we getting what we think we should?

  2. It would be nice if folks would kinda stop looking for something to bitch about and pull together occasionally. A lotta folks would like to have a team to back that is doing as good as this one. Look at how the other teams in the metroplex are doing. TCU,SMU and UTA are in UNTs rear view mirror. This team is definately in the hunt for a berth in the Dance and on the way to their best conference record since being in the Belt.

This UNT team is definitely in the hunt, not doubt about that, and and that is what we should be celebrating and be focused on.

However, comparisons to TCU, SMU and UTA are irrelevant. If we are thinking about coaches, we should compare to the Sun Belt. Specifically Jarvis, Brady, Arrow and MacDonald. In the long run our future depends on how we do against them, not how out stats compare to those of TCU and SMU.

  3. I'm wondering what the difference is between the tickets offered Ticket Master vs the tickets offered by the Athletic Department.

Tickets at the MeanGreenSports website are about $45 cheaper and are General Admission. TicketMaster tickets appear to be reserved seating. I'd rather sit with my fellow fans, so what ticket package will you be purchasing?

Unless there is something different this year, all seats are gen admission.

  4. Our finishing schedule is favorable. Competition for the 3rd seed from the West Div is ULL (4 losses) and Denver (5). We get both at home and ULL has a tough finishing schedule: four of six on the road.

MTSU lead the East with four losses and they would have the tie breaker against us. We have the tie breaker on everyone else in contention. MTSU has a challenging schedule remaining and the East is really up for grabs.

First order of business is to take care of business and finish no worse than at 5 losses. Second is for MTSU to either win their division or finish with more than 5 losses.

We have our chance but still need help from MTSU.

  5. I'd agree that Dr. Al Hurley did hold North Texas athletics back but not for the reasons that you understand.

A little about Al Hurley's background. He graduated from St. John's, which was a basketball power but didn't play football. Therefore, he had no college football background. He was a retired Air Force general and noted historian. That would count for the no nonsense graduation posture on the antic that you tried.

Al Hurley was highly motivated to build academics at North Texas and conditions were ripe for state money to improve the scholastic standing. He didn't have the money to do both academics and athletics so his choice was obvious.

Athletics, after good years at the major college level under Odus Mitchell, Rod Rust (early) and Hayden Fry had begun slipping. Jerry Moore (yes, the same Jerry Moore who is now the coach at Appalachian State and Charlie nt73's cousin) only stayed two years and bolted for Texas Tech. Enter Bob Tyler, the ex-Mississippi State coach who almost got us suspended by the NCAA, who won only two games in his year at the helm and the program was headed downhill at exactly the wrong time.

That became the year when it was time to remain Division 1-A or drop to Division 1-AA. Division 1-A would have required a stadium of 30,000 since we hadn't averaged 17,000 in 1981. We didn't have/couldn't raise the money on short notice; ergo we spent the next 12 years in what is now FCS. Hurley really didn't have that much of a choice.

Not only did Hurley not have much of a choice, the fan base did not care. There was little or no protest about moving down when the plan was made public.

  6. As GrandGreen stated....the game against MTSU is shaping up to be the biggest of the year so far for us. We're in the hunt right now of grabbing the 3rd seed - which I think will be terribly important this year. I don't believe the SBC tourney can be won any longer by a school without a bye because of the new format.

    Right on.

As of now, with Dominque and Kedrick out, we are getting nothing from our bench. Making it even tougher to win more than 3 games in a few days.

  7. Adam struggled the first half of his junior year...I'd chalk that up to always playing around inferior players and only being counted on to score. I felt he really improved towards the end of his junior year (highlighted by his perfect night vs. ASU) and was really hopeful going into last year that JJ would turn his best shooter and best athlete loose. It didn't happen until the end of the season...but I felt what you saw there was what we saw flashes of his entire senior season.

He also struggled the first 18 games of his senior year. He began the year playing 14-18 mins a game, that quickly went down and he played less than 10 a game for more than half the season. It wasn't until late Jan that he began to earn more playing time. The info can be found on the UNT web site.

JJ tried to turn him loose early, but he did not respond and his playing time went drastically down. I can't put a guy on the all-decade team when he played a few good games at the end of his junior year and a few more at the end of his senior year.

  8. Dallas, I think that Todd Ford made a good decision for him. The job as a HC at a new HS probably looks a lot more secure to him than being OC at North Texas. Especially with the "sword of Damocles" hanging over everyone's head this season.

I've said this in another thread, but it would take someone who has any college coaching experience to be desperate or delusional about their abilities to apply for the OC position this season.

A guy who is out of a job due to a coaching change might take it on a one-year basis.

  9. First Team -

PG. Isaac Hines - 6'1" guard who led the team in rebounding his junior season...scored when needed, including some very timely threes...distributed the ball well...led team in steals his 2 seasons...he did everything you want your point guard to do to help this team win.

SG. Kendrick Davis - no more clutch player in the past decade for UNT...plus I give his temper credit for turning Calvin into the player we remember him as, rather than just the role player he was in his first three seasons.

SF. Chris Davis - arguably the greatest player in UNT history.

PF. Quincey Williams - double-double machine

    C. Shawnson Johnson - when his head was in the game I've never seen a more dominant player at UNT

    Second Team -

PG. Ben Bell - statistically underwhelming, but he was the motor on the tourney team.

SG. Josh White - untgeorge, you're right, if he were 6'1" he'd be elsewhere, but he's 5'8"...and with that comes limitations. I love him and he has a season and a half to convince me otherwise, but I'd still take KD at this point.

SF. Calvin Watson - really came into his own as a senior...and that 6 of 9 night in the SBC final was magic.

PF. George Odufuwa - strong, athletic rebounder who's continued offensive game development has helped carry us through various injuries

    C. Keith Wooden - Injuries slowed his senior year, but he'd make the list based solely on the Memphis game.

    Honorable Mention -

SG. Leonard Hopkins - actually had the 2nd highest scoring season (18.1 in 04-05) on this list.

SF. Rich Young - the glue

PF. Michael DeGrate - versitille inside-outside game

SG. Adam McCoy - so under-utilized

McCoy was didn't play many minutes because he played poorly until the last half of his senior season. For 8 games or so, he was great.

  10. We had some good players this decade, this would be my all decade team.

    PG- Ben Bell

    SG- Kendrick Davis

    SF- Chris Davis

    PF- Deginald Erskine

    C- Shawnson Johnson

    2nd Team

    PG- Josh White

    SG- Leonard Hopkins

    SF- Calvin Watson

    PF- Quincy Williams

    C- Keith Wooden

One more thought: Josh ahead of Kendrick at the 2 guard position. Josh is the best offensive player we have ever had, if he were 6-1 he would be at Kansas or somewhere like that, and Josh is not a PG. Nothing against Kendrick, our go-to guy for a couple of years. But Josh is special.

  11. We had some good players this decade, this would be my all decade team.

    PG- Ben Bell

    SG- Kendrick Davis

    SF- Chris Davis

    PF- Deginald Erskine

    C- Shawnson Johnson

    2nd Team

    PG- Josh White

    SG- Leonard Hopkins

    SF- Calvin Watson

    PF- Quincy Williams

    C- Keith Wooden

    Very good.

Personally I would put Wooden over Johnson because Wooden had a more offensive game. Johnson had one move, plus following up on offensive rebounds.

  12. Morgan had a brief uptick of playing time while Bruins forward James Keefe was out with a shoulder injury. With Keefe injured, Morgan was given double digit minutes (for the first time since December 2008) in six straight games.

21 points in 6 games, never more than 5 in any contest.

Now, Keefe is back healthy, and Morgan (as ADLER noted) has played two minutes in each of the past two games against Arizona and Arizona State.

All this happens after fellow sophomore Drew Gordon, a post player who was averaging over 24 minutes and 11 points per outing, transferred after just 6 games. He just announced that he'll be going to New Mexico rather than Texas or any of the ACC teams that contacted him, because he wants to be a focal point in the offense immediately.

So... After one of the starters and top scorers on the team (who happens to be from the same recruiting class as Morgan) decided to transfer mid-year, AND one of the reserves missed three weeks with a shoulder injury... Morgan still doesn't get more than 16 minutes or 5 points in any game. And next year, as ADLER mentioned, Josh Smith is coming to eat up even more rotation minutes.

Based on the playing time decisions in the two games since Keefe returned... This year's window of opportunity seems to have closed. It only gets harder again next season. And even the guys who are getting the opportunities (like Gordon) are shipping out because they don't like the offensive limitations that UCLA's system puts on them.

It's an unfortunate situation for such a talented young man. But it appears that if J'mison Morgan wants to play basketball beyond college, he'll need to go somewhere else in order to get the game experience and opportunity to showcase his talent and ability.

North Texas spring classes start January 19th. UCLA plays three more games between now and then. I doubt we see a mid-year transfer to any school by Morgan, but if he did... And if he decided to consider coming to North Texas... The opportunity for a mid-year transfer is still on the table and Morgan could play next January. He could either redshirt next season and play two full years in 2011-12 and 2012-13, or forego the redshirt and play half of the 2010-11 season and a full year in 2011-12.

Why mid-year transfer? Why not wait until after the season and avoid losing half a year of eligibility? Because then he could join us in time for conference play next season, slotting in to Eric Tramiel's position and teaming with Josh, Dom, George, and Tristan (and Thomas, Shorter, Holmen, Mangrum, Hogans, and everyone else currently on the roster besides Tramiel) to lead us to what would probably be the greatest conference record this school has ever seen.

I'm not a big believer in transcendental meditation or long-distance psychic communication... But maybe if everyone concentrates really hard at the exact same time, we can communicate with Morgan sometime in the next week and a half, before the mid-year clock runs out. I don't think there's any NCAA recruiting violation in that.

UCLA is a great school in a fun place for a young man to live. But if he wants to play basketball for a living, its going to be tough to show his stuff there. There's still time to come here and take over a starting job 12 months from now, with a great team surrounding him and the opportunity to dominate the Sun Belt and potentially make some noise in the NCAA Tournament.

It's highly, highly unlikely. But for the next week and a half, it's at least possible. Consider it something pleasant to daydream about as a distraction from the injuries that keep piling up.

Tough to show his stuff there? Morgan has had two years to show his stuff at a program that routinely produces NBA players, Howland has sent 3 of his recruits (Love Westbrook and Collison) and a couiple of Lavin's recruits to the NBA in 5 seasons. The only rational conclousion is that Morgan isn't playing because he hasn't earned the time, and he has not earned his time in a down year (UCLA is 6-8 to date).

This thread appears to be generated purely on speculation and "want to". Is there some evidence that he is considering a transfer? Or is this totally a pipe dream? A speculation for fun?

You guys have fonder memories of his dad than I do. At UNT Morgan had a strong 1st year then got fat and lazy. Hopefully J'mision has not followed in his father's footsteps in that respect but it is fair to be suspicious..

Now, could he help UNT if he transferred? Sure, we need the size and depth.

  13. She has a family to support. How dare you post such a damaging rumor about an AD employee without a source. There are lives at stake -- HUMAN LIVES!!!!

    For shame! FOR SHAME!

Next you'll say she's going to San Diego State because it's a school based in California because it makes sense in your little theory. It must be nice to live in a world where things of that sort are okay to bring up.

Me, I'll wait for an official source the way God intended when he invented journalism.

It was the other guy who invented journalism.

  14. Does anyone have any idea who TD was talking about in regards to recruiting? He stated there would be a few surprise recruits under lock and key pver the next few weeks.

    Any thoughts?

I guess if we knew it would not be a surprise, would it.

    Have a little patience.
