    NATIONAL CHAMPS FUTURE SCHEDULEShttp://nationalchamps.net/NCAA/future_schedules/northtexas_future.htm

Didn't I read that the game at Texas in 2014 has been cancelled as a result of the BigXII revamping its schedules resulting in BigxII teams having one fewer OOC game per season?

Hopefully we can do something about the 2012 schedule, since as scheduled we would not have 6 home games that season.

  2. so let me get this straight....we don't won't WAC because we can't travel well to West Coast Games (among other reasons of course).....but we want MWC? CUSA or bust! I'm banking on a Houston to the Big East scenario and replacing them in CUSA.

The MWC has Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV and SanDiegoSt; the WAC has Idaho La Tech and two Texas programs that have no history. Surely you can see a difference.

That having been said, CUSA would be more attractive to UNT.

The same guy who had the scoop on BYU going independent says the MWC is looking at Utah State and UTEP to get to 12.

So if that that happens what does UNT need to do to beat out LA Tech for the 12th spot in CUSA.

actually what the article says is that the MWC will meet sometime after the year to decide if they want to go to 12 or stay at 10. Going to 12 is not a done deal.

  4. Louisiana Tech

    @ UALR

    Troy

    @ Mississippi St.

    Jacksonville St.

    ULM (Nuetral site)

UALR has played better this year than last, but this still feels like a tough spot for them. Troy returns to Ole Miss for a rematch of their NIT matchup from last March. Expect a similar outcome. Hoping ULM can beat Jacksonville, in an apparent tossup.

Oops. troy is playing Mississippi State now, played University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in the NIT. Even so, one should still expect a similar outcome.

  5. I read the article & wondered why with JJ's team are they still ranked a #15.

    Can you explain that ranking?

    GMG

Because we haven't convinced anyone we are better than that.

As pointed out elsewhere, last year we had no quality wins and two embarrassing losses (FIU at home and Boise).

  6. Another offensive coach. Offense sells tickets (new stadium). Defensive coaches tend to bring three yards and a cloud of dust OC's to the party. Defensive coaches tend to be authoritarian, which is good, the general style wont fire up the fan base quickly. They usually weed more guys out, which backfires at some places, with so many new guys. Then again, RV did not ask me.

Nick Saban was a DC. Urban Meyer was a defensive asst. Bo Pellini was a DC. Someone has already mentioned Stoops. The idea that DCs bring "three yards and a cloud of dust" does not hold up.

  7. Odufuwa will start at one post, the other starter will likely be Edwards or Holmen. Holmen was playing as a post last year, and now that Tramiel is gone he'll be even more critical there. Holmen isn't consistent enough from outside the arc to be a wing player exclusively, and on a team like ours his inside skills and size are too critical to use him as an outside player. That's what JJ recruited him to do, that's what they were preparing him for last season, and that's what he'll probably be doing for the rest of his North Texas career.

Hogans is unlikely to start because his greatest strengths are defense- rebounding and shot blocking. It isn't that he can't score, it's that he has a rare fire and intensity for the dirty work. He's got to fill Odufuwa's role on a 2nd unit with either Holmen or Edwards- whoever doesn't start as our score-first post player. Kedrick isn't going to out-George George, so he'll get heavy minutes as a sub. I may wind up being completely wrong here, but that's my expectation. Spencer will probably be the 5th post, much like last year, and hopefully will continue to contribute in the same way he did last season if he finds himself back in that role. If everyone stays in the role they've played or been recruited for, then Knox is not likely to get any chance at minutes significant enough to properly develop or push for more time.

Josh and Tristan are clear starters. Shorter, Alzee, Dominique... I can see any or all of them starting based on matchups and productivity. When four of your five guards are all capable of running the offense, the flexibility is a nice asset.

Losing McGhee was a major blow, and now depth at guard is a concern. We can't really afford any injuries or slumps. When Mangrum transfered, it looked like we'd be able to replace him with a better long-term solution, but we weren't able to get anyone worthy of the scholarship in time for this season. When he left, it looked like the best scenario for everyone. Knowing what we know now, I really, REALLY wish he was still around.

One possibility is using Alonzo Edwards as a 3. One of the concerns on him coming aboard on Tramiel's scholarship was that he hasn't been much of a back to the basket guy, and he likes to shoot the 3 and play more of an outside role. If we get into trouble at guard, maybe he can play a more traditional small forward position and open up more frontcourt minutes for Cam/Jacob/Kedrick/Knox.

If I had to guess how the guard rotation will work, I think Dominique will be our usual starter and our primary ballhandler whenever the size won't be a major issue. Josh plays better and is more of an offensive threat when he doesn't have to create for the rest of the team, and Dominique did a great job of setting up him and everyone else two years ago. When matchups preclude having Dom and Josh on the floor for lengthy stretches, or when we need more of a lockdown defender to match up against an opposing starter, I'd expect Shorter to be the 3rd starting guard and Josh to run the offense. I think Alzee is going to be a great player for us, but unless we lose someone to injury I don't think he starts until next season.

Holmen's minutes diminished to nearly nothing the last six games of the season, including the NCAA and conf tournament games. No more than 6 mins in any of those games, zero in two. Did he have a health problem, or were the coaches lacking in confidence in him?

  8. Wow. One win and we're talking top 25.

Tentative future schedules (incomplete) as published (Green Gang) in July, with some additions:

2011 - Houston, Alabama, Tulsa and Indiana. (Indiana's future schedule on their website does not include UNT and shows Ind plays Illinois on the date we were to play Indiana. Ind's 2012 schedule doesn't show us but has room for us.)

    2012 - LSU and KState.

2013 - Georgia, Ohio and Ball State.

2014 - UTx, SMU and Tulsa.

2015 - Tulsa, SMU and Iowa.

2016 - SMU, Florida and Army.

2017 - SMU, Iowa and Army.

2018 - SMU (I thought this was a 4 yr deal not 5), Army and Arkansas.

Probably lots of changes we don't know about since the above was posted. For instance Indiana's future schedule changed substantially when it was redone to get Nebraska into the Big 10/11/12.

Who knows if this gets Plum where he wants us to go. But we are years away from top 25 consideration.

In rereading Bartolotta's info, I see it was dated july 2009 and the SMU deal is ten years.

  10. Bleacher Report

"(For what it is worth, UNT for their part also has somewhat misleading stats. The Mean Green is averaging a Sun Belt worst 15.5 point a game. If you likewise allow them a mulligan for the Army game - where their offensive coaches didn't show for the game - UNT has a more respectable 20 point a game average.)"

so you want to take out the low.

What if you take out the high?

Hmmm. Works out to 15.5 p[g.

  11. Yeah, but UTEP's TV market? Probably doesn't matter because look at CUSA's flirtation with La "no TV market whatsoever" Tech? Last I read, the ESPN's of this world are really interested in conferences that have wide spread TV markets with schools in those markets who can actually pull good ratings in said TV market.

    GMG!

The time that I edited this post is in the humongous blue bar below. :P

Good point, Plum, but the premise of this thread is who (if anyone) does the MWC take if Houston is not interested? And if UH is not interested, there aren't that many good choices.
