According to an article in the Sun Belt tournament program; info as of Jan 1st.
Chris Davis - Playing in France
Bryan Lucas - Austria
Jeffrey Simpson - Uruguay
Michael Sturns - Japan
Calvin Watson - Hungary
The article lists 73 former Sun Belt players playing in other countries.
FYI.

Anyway, it all interests me because if we get our new stadium, what will our prices be? Will the majority of fans pay a much higher price to come there and watch SBC games?
Yes, of course. Why would anyone expect otherwise?

I don't think OM-V played worth a crap...
34 mins per game, 17 assists vs 6 turnovers (which is what a point is there to do), led team in scoring vs FIU, defensive whiz (for instance, the number he did on Josh in the 2nd half of our game and on his counterpart at FIU). Solid if unspectacular player. Team leader on the floor, a guy who makes plays and makes everyone on the floor better.
I have no problem with his selection to the all-tourney team though I was surprised to see him as player of the year.

Sorry guys, but those are homer eyes. My really quick prediction:
First - Yates (MTSU), Dykes (UNO), Graham (FAU), Slaughter (WKU), Rohnert (UD)
Second - Hazzard (Troy), Tilford (USA), B. Davis (USA), Mendez-Valdez (WKU), Vogler (Troy)
Third - Delk (Troy), Boone (ASU), Pettigrew (WKU), Worley (UNO), Tramiel (UNT)
And thats leaving off anyone from the second place team, ULL's Gradnigo and Bureau and FIU's Alex Galindo who I don't think played enough games.
Another star who won't make it because he played only 10 games is Carlos Monroe, who we will see Wednesday.
-
We did play them Jan 17th. When NT was clearly NOT playing their best basketball. I don't see this game being anywhere near as close.
GO MEAN GREEN!
Well, keep in mind that when we played them their two best players did not play.
Paul Graham is one of the conferences leading scorers.
Carlos Monroe is a hoss of a big inside man.
Neither played in Denton in January. This will not be the same FAU team we played then and could be a very difficult game.

The minutes Adam McCoy recieved during 6 of our 11 losses this season. In 3 others he got between 14 and 12 minutes, and recorded 20 in the latest loss against UALR. I'm not sure why he didn't play against UNO back in December...injury? But you have to wonder what could have been if our hottest player was getting more than 4 minutes in games we had no excuse losing in like UTA?
Another interesting question I have is how many of those losses were we leading in, late, only to lose afterwards?
My point to all of this is that I have seen a trend in us losing the winnable games and this year is no different and I can't help but wonder what a little bit more spark(McCoy) in these games over the years could have done for us? In the past, and possibly this year also, if we don't qualify for the Big Dance, another 4 or 5 wins would have us in contention every year to possibly qualify for an NIT bid?
Rick
McCoy has improved dramatically, and now may be our best offensive player, but before the last run he was not playing well. Always our best 3-pt shooter, for the first half of the season he was our worst shooter inside the arc (both statements based on the shooting %s at the time), was ineffective in penetrating and making plays, and shoot very few foul shots, fewest on the squad per minute played. The frustration and exasperation on JJs face when he took McCoy out after just a few minutes of playing time was dramatic, as McCoy was far from our hottest player in Dec and Jan and was not providing a spark off the bench. It is a tribute to McCoy that he stayed with it and brought his game around and a tribute to JJ that he stayed with him. I have not always understood how JJ manages his players, but in this case, give credit to both.
As to losing games we should have won, we have done that for years and to my eyes it has to do with defense and to a less than desirable intensity level. The level of intensity in the last six games has been amazing.

Lamar students taxed themselves (as did Texas State students), UNT students taxed a future generation.

In no order:
- Pat Hicks half court shot that sent our game vs UT into OT, capping a comeback from 11 down with just over a minute to play; we won in OT
- the miracle in the desert
- Kenny Lyons laying waste to Mark Aguirre
- Bowl game(s) in NO
- SunBelt tournament championship
- NCAA game vs Memphis in NO
Almost as good, still in no order:
- Winning the Southland conf tournament
- A fan (who shall go nameless until I am properly bribed) being kicked out of a bb game
- Jimmy Gales asking a student journalist if he had ever attended journalism class, after an especially dumb question
- Hayden Fry
- Fry beating SMU in TxStadium
- all trips to the Sun Belt conference tournaments
- Lyons scoring 44 on Karl Malone
- Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Vinnie Johnson, Mark Aguirre, UNC, all in the Super Pit
- The Missouri Valley games in the old Snake Pit
- Fry's last game, beating So Miss
I better stop before I set new records for wordage.
Addendum: Special people I would not have known were it not for our involvements w UNT athletics:
Ed Whittemore (more yrs than is any of your business)
The poster formerly known as Rick Spears (ditto)
The poster formerly known as Jim Plummer (ditto)
Bernie, Harry, Phil, Stan
Brad and Vicki, Chuck and Melbie
Cliff (a UNT prof who had seats near mine, died two or three years ago in an accident)
Alan and Hank
This list alone makes it all worthwhile.

In lieu of Brett Vito's malicious article...which has effectively ended the life of UNT athletics...and with a ripple effect of distruction that may too reach intramural sports as well as the afternoon pick-up games of basketball in the REC, only time will surely tell...I thought it would be best to reminisce on the good times that we have shared with UNT athletics...to celebrate her life, rather than mourn her passing:
My two favorites would have to be the 2002 New Orleans Bowl and the 2007 first round NCAA tournement game against Memphis...good times.

This year in the Sun Belt does it really matter if we are the 4th seed or the 6th seed. Our formula is simple, we shoot well we can beat everybody in the league, we dont shoot well we have games like last night and all our other losses in conference. This year the belt is way more even than I can remember. Last year I remember thinking we would have to play our very best game to beat WKU or USA and that is not the case this year. I just hope the team that played the previous 4 games shows up in the tournament and not the team we saw last night.
I wish it were that simple. Sat we played with as much intensity and determination as we have the past two weeks, we shot poorly because UALR did not give us good looks with their tough aggressive perimeter defense and at the same time denied the ball to our inside people. Their taller perimeter people had their hands in the faces of our smaller guards all night, and their help defense denied us good shots when we penetrated. This should not have been a surprise, since Shields has been at UALR he is 10-2 vs UNT. As the saying goes, defense travels well, and Shields teams play tough aggressive defense.
To win we have to learn to overcome defenses which play us aggressively on the perimeter, with people who are taller than our people but almost as quick.

It would take a monumental miracle to not get a home game. We would have to lose out, and other teams would need to win out.
1 more win and we clinch.
My point is, even if we lose out and someone wins out, we have a home game.
again, correct me if I am wrong.

Admins please leave this in the football forum if possible. We need to get everyone out to the game tonight.
The Mean Green takes on the first place Trojans of Arkansas-Little Rock tonight at 7:00pm. This should be a downright battle as we lost on the road by a single point in OT in the last meeting. The Mean Green are on a 4 game win streak featuring nothing short of dominant performances over SBC opponents. Adam McCoy is on fire and Josh White is returning to freshman form...and the players seem to have found a new chemistry. This may be your last opportunity this season to catch a home game depending on the final SBC standings. And if this isn't enough, tonight is senior night so get out to the Super Pit to honor our seniors and for what has the makings of a fantastic game!
Actually by my reckoning we are now assurred of a home game March 4.
Here is my logic, someone please correct me if I am wrong.
The top three teams in the conference have byes in the March 4 round. Five teams will have home games, five will have road games. To have a home game, we need to finished higher than the bottom five.
We have six losses, so even if we lose out the worse we can do is have nine losses. Four teams (UNO, ArkSt, ULM and FAU) already have ten or more losses, and thus will finished below us. Two teams now have nine losses and thus if they win out and we lose out will tie us at 9-9. Those two teams are FIU and ULL and we have the head-to-head tie-breaker against both. Thus we are assured of not finishing in the bottom five, and in fact have the 7th seed cinched.
So we can finished anywhere from 4th seed to 7th seed, but in any event, will be at home March 4.
Like I said, correct me if I am wrong.
But the real message is we should show up tonight for a tough game (Shields is 8-2 vs UNT) and to honor our seniors.

I was talking about their team that was something like 24-3 and in the freaking top 25 that got snubbed from the tournament a few years ago. Should have specified since they are back there this year.
and you make a very good point. Sorry I did not get it at first since that is my argument all along.

Just ask a ranked Utah State team!
Rankings in polls are meaningless in college basketball.
More relevant "rankings" are RPI (USU is in the '30s). USU may get in by winning the WAC, but don't look for a high seed. Whoever does not win the WAC tournament may be on the bubble.

Are you sure?
NT BB schedule
Home
Sam Houston...14-9
NM St.............13-12
UTA................16-10
Jackson St......11-13 (Will soon have a winning record)
Indiana State...7-19 (Have wins over Illinois St (home and away) and Northern Iowa)
Houston Baptist.3-22
Cameron D-2
Road
Oklahoma State...15-9
Arkansas.............13-10 (wins over Texas and Oklahoma)
Houston...............16-7
Sam Houston...... 14-9
I don't see anything wrong with this schedule. We just haven't won enough games
Keep in mind that in the matters that count, such as RPI and other NCAA seeding considerations, games vs non-D1 teams aren't considered. It is like the games weren't played.
BY that standard, vs D1 schools, UTA is 10-10 and SHSU is 10-9.

How far out are basketball schedules set? Can a coach actually "work" the schedule based on the "youth" or "experience" of their teams? Just wondering.
Schedules are not made that far ahead for the most part. Most (not all, but most) OOC arrangements are 2 years H and H, meaning teams reconstruct half their OOC schedukes each year.
Any Sunbelt team will have to win the tournament to get into the NCAA's and will probably be no better than a 14 or 15 seed no matter what their schedule was like. I think the entire conference is going to have to "get better" to get better seeds. The "big time" schools play weak out of conference schedules too, but then conference is a challenge and makes up for the weak out of conference it seems to me. But, just like the Sunbelt in football...not much respect nation-wide as a conference.
Probably true this season, but LY the SunBelt teams were a 10 and a 12 seed.

One of the weakest in the nation. It has been posted many times by many people. I know at least four different posters have said so in the last month. But, is it true? I disagree. I don't even think the NT schedule is one of the weakest in the conference.
Pomeroy is the only rating service I have found that rates out of conference schedules. It has NT at #119 out of 344 D-1 schedules, and #5 in the Sun Belt.
Several others rank strength of schedule for the season, but don't break it down into OOC.
Sagarin has NT at #228 nationally and #5 in the Belt.
Real Time Sports has NT at #227 Nationally and #6 in the Belt.
NCAA RPI has NT at #227 Nationally and #7 in the Belt.
Pomeroy used to give OOC RPI ratings but quit showing any RPI ratings and wiped out the archives this season. Here are the OOC RPI ratings for previous seasons based on one of my previous posts:
Out of conference strength of schedule rankings according to RPI during J Jones era:
Year...National Rank ....Sun Belt Rank
2001: 40....................1
2002: 234..................7
2003: 32....................1
2004: 310..................11
2005: 132..................6
2006: 167..................7
2007: 286..................12
2008: 86....................5
Whether our schedule us "weaker" or "weakest" us a moot point.
Reality us that if we win out and go to the NCAA tournament, we will be a 14 or 15 seed. Probably 15. Our OOC schedule us part of the reason we won't seed better, we have no wins vs the top 100 and some bad losses (UTA and UNO). We have beaten only a few teams which have a winning record. Whether "weaker" or "weakest", I dunno, but the schedule us not strong enough to help us at ye.
Some if the weakness is bad luck, who knew Indiana State program was going into the tank. That looked like a challenging matchup when we signed it. Also the Belt is a little down this season. Some if it may have been by design, for instance if JJ wanted an easier schedule knowing he would be breaking several new people into the lineup. That is a common strategy, look at Butler this year.
Nonetheless, if we intend for this program to be something better than a one-and-out NCAA team, we have to (among other things) beef up our OOC schedule and win some if those games. It depends on what your ambitions are for this program, if you are satisfied with the status quo, don't beef up the schedule.

I didn't know White even had a thumb injury.
Vito just had to throw our record out there somewhere in the story , 15 -10... always so negative
We've come a long way when someone thinks 15-10 is negative.

Big news for UTA. Next Wednesday, the new arena is on the agenda of the UT Board of Regents. Among many other things, this could finally mean a potential holiday tournament among the "Big 4" DFW schools. At least TCU and SMU will no longer have an excuse for avoiding coming to Arlington. The planned completion date is in three years for a 6500 seat facility, costing $73 million. Details from the agenda item:
Not as grand as the SuperPit, but dang! we have waited forever!
Where is the money coming from?
-
I could. Long term, we cannot continue to have uneven divisions. It is such a hassle. It would not make sense to have ONE non-football school.
What exactly is the problem with having a non-football school in the conference? Though many have said that is a problem, no one that I am aware of has explained why it is a problem.
Uneven schedules are a hassle for those who make schedules. Not for the players or coaches or fans.

One is probably Brittany Hudson (Rice transfer) and I'm not sure who the other one is
Yeah, I had forgotten Hudson. The 3rd one has just been there the last two games. Maybe a mid-term transfer?
-
Raquel Cuffie for Winston Salem Prep. is averaging 13.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg and 5.3 spg and 7.5 apg
Jasmine Godbolt for Naaman Forest is averaging 12.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg
Lakevia Taylor for Hempstread is averaging 20.8 ppg shooting 52% from field and 39.7% from 3
Brittany Thompson for Waco Connally is avering 17.3 ppg and 11.2 rpg
There are three people in street clothes sitting at the end of the bench. One is Nikky Hughes, I am sure; who are the others?

Darius and Darnell Taylor LB/S Mesquite - Darnell Taylor was offered at safety by Wisconsin but his brother was not so he didn't commit...if we can land Darnell and find an agreement with Darius (grayshirt, preferred walk on, ect) this could be a huge steal for us.
Taylor Hughes JUCO QB - I don't think we can be comfrotable with heading into next season with Riley, Tune, Baine and Thompson as our depth at QB.
Walter Hardin TE Cedar Hill - He's 6'6" 230 and athletic...whether he plays tight end or gets moved to defensive end he'd be worth the risk. A good replacement for the kid from Everman who went to Baylor.
Pauli Latu JUCO DT - Depending on Atkinson's decision, adding two experienced DTs to our rotation should help stabilize the position and enable potential guys like DeSoto, Cantly and Franklin to develop
Josh Emmons DT Stephenville - Under-rated prospect from a H.S. program with a reputation for producing sound football players
Robert Spann JUCO LB - LB depth is a major concern...I don't need a guy to slide into a starting role...but I feel we're in real trouble with an injury or two. Spann is also big (6'2" 240)...giving us a different look than our smaller LBs can provide.
We need both Latu and Emmons whatever Atkinson decides. We just don't have the numbers. As to Spann, you are right on.

I guess this kid isn't that coveted by Division I-A schools. I thought he would be. I guess we didn't offer him, but read this about him:
Hall was one of the more remarkable stories of the season. He dropped nearly 80 pounds in the offseason after attending two sessions of a health camp. The 6-3, 285-pound senior was also named to the first team of the District 5-4A team. In his 10 regular-season games, Hall didn’t allow a sack and had 38 pancake blocks while grading out an 88 percent on the season. He has received an offer from Stephen F. Austin, but Guyer coach John Walsh said he expects Hall to receive Division I offers soon.
Edit: According to the D-RC...he is part of Guyer's signing day ceremony....and he will sign with SFA.
Shoot, he's too slow to be a slot receiver, what would we want with him?
